Well, if people believed banks were secretive before, wait to see how secretive they (and the Fed for that matter) will be now.

I never had a problem with banks… I put money in they pay interest. I borrow money they charge interest. Seems about right.

“We have one related to a bank coming up, that’s a megaleak. It’s not as big a scale as the Iraq material, but it’s either tens or hundreds of thousands of documents depending on how you define it,” Assange said in the interview posted on the Forbes website.

I don’t see how Wikileaks has the time and staff to go through that many documents and be sure there isn’t information in them that would be damaging to an innocent person if if was made public.

I am very dubious about how this is going to achieve ‘reform’, but at least this one doesn’t seem like it’ll put anyone’s lives at risk.

However, I feel like there’s quite enough information out there already about the way that banks operate at the executive level to prompt reform.

What I’m worried about is the potential economic fallout. We cannot afford a crisis of confidence. Wikileaks must be shut down.

I just filled out the paperwork to claim damages on an account where the fund owners had admitted to market timing their trades. The settlement was $75 million. Average was $0.003 per share.

Good. But seriously, a crisis of confidence? We’re already there. The banks already trashed the economy. The metamarkets have proven themselves irresponsible to the point that Alan Greenspan has despaired of them. That ship has sailed a long time ago.

What are the emails going to reveal? That banks don’t give a crap about the nation in their pursuit of wealth? Wow, enormous surprise. That individual executives don’t give a crap about the long-term health of the company? Amazing, never would have guessed. That regulations are met with attempts to subvert, avoid, and negate them? Holy crap!

I’m new here, I’ve been following the discussion here at LGF for a long time now. I enjoy the civil discussion and also the fact that conservatives are capable of having independent thought (you guys have no idea how refreshing this is).

As far as the topic is concerned, I’m of two minds; on one hand Assange needs to calm down for a while and on the other I’m thinking this is what happens when the press fails, radicals fill the void and this is what we are witnessing. OOooh! You should design a series of increasingly difficult puzzles, and incorporate them into a treasure map to your MIL’s stash. Sell them for $9. You’ll want to market them to 9-to-12 year-olds who might or might not have seen “The Goonies” (much older than that, and their curiosity and imaginations have probably already been mostly discouraged into oblivion). Imply spooky mysteries and vaguely hazardous adventures. I bet it wouldn’t take too long to make more $ from treasure map sales than you MIL actually stashed away.

nah, you can stop it, at least at a well-run corporation. it just costs money. for example, at my last company, we contemplated imbedding sensitive documents with a unique little sumpin’-sumpin’ so that we would know where a potential leak came from. we didn’t, because we believed that our exposure was too minimal to be worth the cost, but it’s quite possible.

that is very true. the most that a company can do is to create the perception that significant leaks can and will be traced, which won’t stop someone who has decided to breach the walls. in the case of a whistleblower, i support very strong protections against retaliation. in the case of a felchard, well, part of being a good management team is knowing who to trust in the first place.

So let me say this…..

I Hope that only good things come from the revelation of the documents, though that is probably an empty hope, and if bad things come I hope that they are small and not life ending/life wrecking…

I also feel I would need to do a lot of reading on both what Wikileaks actually leaked, and what it relates to, before I could take a stance with any confidence on this issue… so yeah I’ll probably go back to lurking now.

Why did these rules fade away? To end recessions past. To get the economy growing. And to get untrained uneducated rubes in the market under the progressive banner, without hindrances like saved uncommitted funds to pay the bills for 90 days. Remember that rule? You used to have to prove that to be allowed to buy stock.

So, only people who already have significant cash savings should be allowed to invest for retirement? Are you nuts?

You slice them them up real thin, put them on a platter with a little mozzarella and balsamic vinaigrette. Then you sell shares of the rights to the profits of people buying and eating your delicious tomatoes. You then set up a tiered system where some people earn more but take the losses from the bad tomatoes, while other people earn less and take losses on the bad tomatoes only after the first class of people gets wiped out. As long as you set your tiers up accurately you still have 8 good tomatoes and 2 bad ones, but if you’re a little bit off… you are suddenly selling 10 good tomatoes.

Make sense?

Lots of ways to invest before you buy stocks. But 90 days of bills in the bank means you have the liquidity proportionate to your means to invest without unwise risks. Financial conservative planning and execution. You start by saving. These days interest rates suck, but historically that is rare.

First you save for retirement, then invest part or much of the savings. Otherwise you are just gambling.

No, I’m sorry, that is not true. The recession didn’t happen because of progressive-minded efforts to get poor people mortgages. Absolutely not true. The crash did not come about because of anything to do with the average guy, but because of arcane financial instruments that did not factor risk.

I agree. The “crash” happened, because people ASSUMED that what they were buying would increase in value. And they bought into those increased expectations, and when the market tanked, they could not afford what they had purchased.

WikiLeaked: John Kerry calls for Israel to cede Golan Heights and East Jerusalem

On a February trip to the Middle East, Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman John Kerry (D-MA) told Qatari leaders that the Golan Heights should be returned to Syria, that a Palestinian capital should be established in East Jerusalem as part of the Arab-Israeli peace process, and that he was “shocked” by what he saw on a visit to Gaza.

Kerry discussed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in a visit to Qatar during separate meetings with Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani and the Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa, as revealed by the disclosure of diplomatic cables by the website WikiLeaks.

The emir told Kerry to focus on Syria as the path toward resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Kerry agreed with the emir that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is a man who wants change but pointed out that his arming of Hezbollah and interference in Lebanese politics were unhelpful. Kerry said that Assad “needs to make a bolder move and take risks” for peace, and that he should be “more statesman-like.” Kerry also agreed with the emir that the Golan Heights should be given back to Syria at some point.

“The Chairman added that Netanyahu also needs to compromise and work the return of the Golan Heights into a formula for peace,” the diplomatic cable reported.

As for the peace process, Kerry defended the Obama administration’s drive to use indirect proximity talks (which were only being discussed at that time) as a stepping stone to direct talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians. He said the two sides should first agree on the amount of land to be swapped and then work on borders, followed by settlements.

Kerry also said that final agreement would have to include a Palestinian state with a capital in East Jerusalem.

re: #214 Rightwingconspirator

Lots of ways to invest before you buy stocks. But 90 days of bills in the bank means you have the liquidity proportionate to your means to invest without unwise risks. Financial conservative planning and execution. You start by saving. These days interest rates suck, but historically that is rare.

First you save for retirement, then invest part or much of the savings. Otherwise you are just gambling.

Shouldn’t that apply to banks even more than individuals? They are the ones who engaged in the risky behavior… Investments without the collateral.

So getting a sprinkling above 1/3rd of non Cuban Latinos is considered a “win” for a GOP candidate these days?

Good luck with that Dark…

Yes, that’s a win in Florida. If a GOP candidate in Florida gets around 40% of Latinos to vote for him or her, it is effectively impossible for the Democrat to win, given the voting behavior of the white population of the state (which favors Republicans consistently, with blacks consistently siding with the Democrats) Given Rubio’s Latino support, Meeks had no chance.

Actually I made a mistake which I already copped to, I forgot it was a 3 way election so 33% is 5% better than he should have done if all parties voted randomly so it’d be like getting 53% or so in a regular election, so yeah I’ll admit Rubio does seem to be able to reach out to Latino voters in that election.

No, his share of Non-Cuban Latinos was 38%. Part of that may be than non-Cuban Latinos in Florida have a higher ratio of Caribbean Latinos to Mexican and Central American Latinos than elsewhere, but it is still a healthy number.

But it’s not unusual for Florida Hispanics to vote Republican. In fact, it’s unusual for them to vote Dem.

Cuba immigration has topped off, somewhat. In the last 10-15 years, we’ve had more coming from Central and South Americas and the Caribbean. That’s places like Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Dominican Republic, etc. I think those are the conservative votes you’re seeing.

I know. That was part of my point: Rubio won votes from those people as well, and his tactics of outreach to increase voter share worked much better than the tactic of riling up the base with xenophobia in hopes of turning them out in greater numbers. That’s a lesson the GOP should learn from.

I think that i’m partly unsympathetic to that argument because i’m partisan (just trying to be honest) and partly because, IIRC, the polls showed something different, which was that Crist v. re: #315 Aceofwhat?

I think that i’m partly unsympathetic to that argument because i’m partisan (just trying to be honest) and partly because, IIRC, the polls showed something different, which was that Crist v. Rubio would have been much more competitive than Meeks v. Rubio. It passes the smell test, too…Crist siphoned away more R votes than D votes, i think.

Meek was outspent. This is a very sad commentary on how our electoral process is going to work in the future. I can hardly think about it.

I don’t think so. He would have had to be a much better candidate than he was to win. He would have gotten more votes but he still would not have won. Like him or dislike him, Marco Rubio ran a better campaign than Kendrick Meek.

Btw, Kerry’s trip to Gaza is highlighted here. If you Google, you’ll find a lot of articles about it.

[Link: www.nytimes.com…]

Kerry said that his visit indicated no change in American policy toward Hamas, which is labeled a terrorist group by the United States, and that he would not be meeting with Hamas leaders.

“Hamas has to change its policies,” Kerry said while visiting the ruins of the American International School in Gaza, which was destroyed by an Israeli air attack in early January. “There is no change in our policy.”

and this

Kerry said Israel had a right to respond to the rockets launches it by Hamas.

“Your political leadership needs to understand that any nation that has rockets coming into it over many years, threatening its citizens, is going to respond,” he said.

So I don’t want to hear it about Kerry.

I went over this in the last thread…This is a misleading article

here is the actual documents from the guardian

[Link: www.guardian.co.uk…]

John Kerry never said what that article claims. Some people need to read the source and check it out before they slander.

Thanks for the link.

10. (C) If we can get Abu Mazen back to the negotiating table, we can engage on border issues — including Israel’s borders with Syria, advised Senator Kerry. Abu Mazen right now is not strong enough, though, to make necessary compromises with Israel because the Palestinian people have wanted him to stick to his guns on a settlement freeze and the Goldstone Report. The Chairman added that Netanyahu also needs to compromise and work the return of the Golan Heights into a formula for peace.

11. (C) The Amir encouraged the U.S. to work the Golan Heights issue first. He stressed that Syrians are very different from Iranians in “mentality,” and said the Syrians turned to Iran for support only because they had nowhere else to go. Now is the time, the Amir told Senator Kerry, to reach out to Damascus.

17. (C) Senator Kerry told the Amir he knew Qatar could help the U.S. but asked how we deal with those who advocate violence. The Amir said the short answer is to work the Syrian track, which means pushing for Israel’s return of the Golan Heights to Syria. The Amir said return of the Golan is important not just to Syria but also to Hizballah and Iran. The U.S. must bear in mind that Misha’al, a leader of Hamas based in Damascus, has drawn the conclusion that the Oslo accords were bad for Arafat. He lost the support of his own people and died living under Israeli siege. The Syrians can help Misha’al and others make tough choices, but only if the U.S. demonstrates to Syria early on a willingness to address the Golan. Senator Kerry responded that the U.S. would accept a legitimate discussion of the Golan Heights.

Yeah but if they come up with new regulations they find new and improved ways to work around those regulations. The same thing with limiting fees. They’ve already come up with new fee and charges most of which are higher than they were before. Including charging for checking accounts that were once free. IOW, it’s a Catch-22 situation.

Last night, someone finally won our skyrocketing 6/55 jackpot of 732 million pesos.

The odds of winning a 6/55 lotto are C(6,55) = 28,989,675 combinations.

At P20/ticket, you would have to spend P579,793,500 on all possible combos.

Seriously, I do not envy folks with septic tanks.

It’s insane. Most of Miami is still on septic.

re: #403 palomino

Aight. If so, at least not as bad.

But is there no overlap between internal communication and private financial records? Might some private info be contained in those internal communications? And does Wikileaks have the manpower to find and redact all such info?

Well, I would think that if they publicized any personal financial information that might get them into faster trouble than anything they’ve done so far. It’s a bit ironic. But they’ll probably redact since I don’t see how that would serve a purpose. What we’ll probably see is general figure regarding CEO bonuses, salaries, pay, etc. Just a guess on my part.

Just in case, as much as I despise Wall Street I don’t agree with this release either. Any such investigation should be done with security in mind and that would include trade secrets that would be open for scrutiny but not open to international competitors.

Ugh, that is the definition of not fun. I’m sorry.

My beloved is not enjoying deciding, with me, whether we prefer living here in Jax with me gone most of the week or moving (again).

Neither are our preferred options, but this town just isn’t overflowing with the sort of thing that i do…

What do you do? Come south maybe?

Re personal financial info, the question is, if they got it, who else has it? And what is it?

Probably the sandy soil is too wet to support a pipe system.

They’ve replaced it in some areas in Broward. And in Miami-Dade in the wealthier neighborhoods. Each home has to pay their share. I don’t think it’s a tax though, but it’s about $3-5000 I believe.

If they’re able to get that then that’s another serious breach of security. I guess we’ll find out once it’s released. That is if Wikileaks is still around by then.

Eh. Purchasing, inventory, logistics, supply-chain, and operations management. There’s some of that in every city, but I just don’t know as many people in Florida as i do in some other states.

re: #315 Aceofwhat?

I think that i’m partly unsympathetic to that argument because i’m partisan (just trying to be honest) and partly because, IIRC, the polls showed something different, which was that Crist v. Rubio would have been much more competitive than Meeks v. Rubio. It passes the smell test, too…Crist siphoned away more R votes than D votes, i think.

Makes sense. Crist was already a known, and fairly popular, commodity. Remove Meeks and then Dems would have voted for Crist as the lesser of two evils. Also as the martyr who was sacrificed by the gop partly because he supported the stimulus and hugged Obama. Not sure it would have been enough, but at least the race becomes competitive.

He’s trolling the media. Plop and run.

Yeah, it’s a vanity project for Assange. There aren’t any coherent principles guiding his group’s actions. Shock and attention seeking are primary goals.

Ideologically most of WL’s acts clearly lean left. But they also dumped all the English climate change stuff that led to climategate. Left wasn’t too happy there.

Yeah but if they come up with new regulations they find new and improved ways to work around those regulations. The same thing with limiting fees. They’ve already come up with new fee and charges most of which are higher than they were before. Including charging for checking accounts that were once free. IOW, it’s a Catch-22 situation.

Forgive me, but if you ever seriously thought that a bank was d”giving” you a checking account for “free”. Who did you think was providing the work, and at what price?

OK, old bad joke.

A man goes to Israel on vacation, and decides to ‘go native’ by renting a camel and riding it through the streets of Tel Aviv. Growing thirsty, he stops and goes into a store to buy a soda, without tying up the camel. When he comes out, the camel is gone.

He goes to the police station and tries to file a missing camel report. “What color is the camel?” the policeman asks. “I don’t remember.”

“Well, one hump or two?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Was it wearing a saddle? Were there decorations on it?”

“No idea.”

“OK, do you know anything about this animal?”

“It was a male! I know that!”

“Sir, you can’t remember the color of the camel, or if it was wearing a saddle, but you know it was a male? How?”

“Well, when I was riding it down Dizengoff Street, people kept pointing, and saying, “Look at the schmuck on that camel!”

I don’t think that’s the point. The point here is that Kerry is not stepping out of the ordinary bounds of the way the U.S. talks about this stuff.

If you absolutely hate U.S. policy in the Middle East, and many do, OK.
