As a Canadian I’m sad that Obama took steps that will reduce the amount of money flowing into my province from China, but as a human and a grandfather worried about how my grandkids will do on land affected by CC, I’m quite happy the US president is obviously more in tune with science than my own numbnut PM Harper is.

hurr hurr public opinion should dictate every vote except for gunz control.

Also, I don’t think most Americans give a sht about the pipeline.

17 lawhawk  Feb 24, 2015 1:19:23pm

re: #7 Charles Johnson

Most Americans are ambivalent about the pipeline. They either oppose or don’t know. And yeah, I know that proponents could turn around and claim the same numbers show overwhelming support or indifference, but the indifference is key.

Once people know what this is about, their support drops.

The project doesn’t create more than a handful of permanent jobs. It doesn’t stimulate the US economy (the oil flows already via other pipelines and via rail, and the refineries are already taking in this tar sands oil). But the pipeline isn’t likely to be built while oil prices are at $60, when a breakeven is far higher. Energy companies are slowing down investments in infrastructure, including new wells and pipelines because oil prices simply don’t support them.

So, it’s not like this pipeline is being built starting tomorrow had Obama signed it into law. And it’s not going to affect oil prices either.

But it would stimulate the pockets of energy companies that have interests in Canadian tar sands. To be sure, there’d be a handful of temp jobs created while the pipeline is built, but those are transitory and move as the pipeline gets built segment by segment.

The people living along the path will have to deal with whatever pipeline failures come next - as they invariably do.

It’s funny. Whenever a Judge rules a popular GOP bill or ballot initiative unconstitutional, they cry “Defying the Will-O’-The-People!!”

When a judge rules a popular Dem bill or ballot initiative unconstitutional, they cry, “We’re a Republic, not a Democracy!!”

Yep, over a foot of snow, then rain and sleet a few days ago turned it all into an insanely dense icepack. Plus we’ve had sub-zero temps and windchills. Most of our roads are narrow, gravel or doubtful dirt, and many roads hug steep ravines without guardrails.
We just had our Level 2 road emergency lifted today.

ETA: My own road is still a complete piece of ice-covered crap. Even though I have a 4WD vehicle, I’m not going to attempt going anywhere for the foreseeable future..

I hold the entire GOP in contempt for wishing this poison pipeline to run down the middle of our nation and possibly endanger dwindling water assets for millions of folks (citizens). For a few lousy bucks. No jobs. No cheaper prices. Nothing but a few lousy bucks. Thank YOU Mr. Obama. Fuck these dolts, and the Trans Canada can Trans Canada that pipeline on their own Trans Canadian soil. Shove off.

And not to forget language in that bill allows a foreign company to take private property via eminent domain, and also specifically indemnifies the company from any future environmental damages while saddling the landowners with any cleanup costs.

The GOP really does think Americans are that stupid.

I still want someone to explain to me how building a pipeline across the United States to ship oil from Canada to the rest of the world benefits Americans.

The construction jobs would be temporary. The environmental damage permanent. And we get no direct benefit from any of that oil. WTF.

I just emailed Johnny Boehner letting him know I was glad the President vetoed Keystone. I also reminded him he is the worst Speaker of the House ever. I always remind him of that…based on poll numbers.

I figure my email address gets booted as spam…but the little effort it takes makes me feel better.

Even though I have a 4WD vehicle, I’m not going to attempt going anywhere for the foreseeable future..

re: #107 The Ghost of Tonalite Gneiss

In my experience, eminent domain that favors land owners is a joke on projects like this. Although the bill does mention local, state and federal laws regarding eminent domain, land owners not amenable to selling off their land would mean they would have to sue, and the mere fact that access to lands through which the pipeline would go should be accessible to it would more than likely constitute a “public good” argument. Winner: TransCanada; L.oser: land owners

Grandson said he’s driving a rental 2015 Mercury SUV for work and going to North Augusta. They’re not going to use those high profile Transit vans in this weather. It’ll be below freezing in this area and allegedly rain tomorrow.

Nevada Republican says cancer is a fungus you can flush out with salt water

Nevada state Assemblywoman (and future Fox News hire) Michele Fiore (R) plans to introduce a bill she said would provide more options for cancer patients — but actually relies on what medical experts call a myth, Think Progress reported.

“If you have cancer, which I believe is a fungus, and we can put a pic line into your body and we’re flushing with, say, salt water, sodium cardonate through that line and flushing out the fungus,” Fiore said on her radio show over the weekend. “These are some procedures that are not FDA-approved in America that are very inexpensive, cost-effective.”
