Who paid for the oppo research?

During the Republican primaries, a research firm called Fusion GPS was hired by The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative website, to unearth potentially damaging information about Mr. Trump. The Free Beacon — which was funded by a major donor supporting Mr. Trump’s rival for the party’s nomination, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — told Fusion GPS to stop doing research on Mr. Trump in May 2016

Left hanging on the last thread:

re: #145 lawhawk

(clip)
Democratic Party 1,453 - 19.6%
Republican Party 662 - 8.9%
Third Party 5
Nonpartisan (Nebraska) 14

re: #243 Anymouse 🌹🎃

That fourteen women here is a record. There were two when the ERA was ratified here in the Seventies.

Moreover, non-partisan in Nebraska means party affiliation isn’t put on ballots. (The only place where it is, is federal candidates, which makes researching affiliations difficult for local offices).

Of those fourteen women, nearly all are affiliated with the Democratic Party, and one is affiliated with the Libertarian Party (she switched after Trump was elected from the Republicans).

We only have 49 state senators for a legislature, so that 14 women being elected in the blue wave is actually a big deal.

The GOP here is losing the women’s vote in the cities (most of them are from the districts representing the three largest cities), just as they are in other places.

My ex-wife’s uncle served in the Bulge. Drafted into the Army out of Alabama, he was one of many Infantry soldiers without proper winter gear because “the war would be over by then” and he didn’t have Northern experience or family to send him stuff from, say, LL Bean, as many northern born troops did. He never hunted after he got back and never forgave the Army over the uniforms.

One of the very few times he opened up about the war, I’m told, while very drunk with his brother (my ex-FiL, a Navy vet who did U-boat patrols in PT boats off the Virginia coast, RIP Ed.) he told of laying in a ditch pretending to be dead while SS troops marched by close enough he could have reached out an touched their hobnail boots.

The first issue came up after Manhattan federal prosecutors tried to block Parnas from transferring his iCloud account, which they had gained access to through discovery, to the House Intelligence Committee. Prosecutors argued that Apple, and not Parnas, had generated the material that they had access to. The second issue exposed a rift between Parnas and his longtime associate Igor Fruman, whose attorney Todd Blanche was visibly annoyed that potentially privileged information in the case may have been transferred to Congress.

This whole impeachment thing I have approached with the attitude of, “Expect the worst, hope for the best.” I fully expect the Republicans to cockblock literally everything and vote to acquit within 5 minutes of the close of the trial. But I sincerely hope to be surprised, and I will eat my hat if even one miracle happens.

Well, there’s a camera pointing at the act of generosity for a reason that suggests a motive for the generosity: performative kindness, but also performative clout, legitimate power. And legitimation of power opens the window to raking in more power and more wealth.

So it’s the opposite of authentic generosity.

Same shit chieftains and kings used to do.

He did say he would be the first person to profit off the presidency, and his supporters just lapped it up.

Two from The Rude Pundit, firing on all cylinders!

Advice to Elizabeth Warren: Campaign on Burning the Republicans Down

There is a significant contingent of Democrats who are dying from being thirsty for some kind of vengeance against the party that has taken Hope and Change and buried it alive. Warren could tap into that thirst and use the rage to boost her votes so she can get around to all the things she’s got a plan for.

No, Republicans, You’re Fucking Lying About Biden and the Ukrainian Prosecutor

This one has good references to back this up!

The EU Observer
The Kyiv Post
Radio Free Europe
Irish Times
US Congressional Record

and this, that I did not know:

(By the way, you know that George W. Bush appointed Hunter Biden to the board of Amtrak? He wasn’t a fucking locomotive engineer either. That’s how this shit goes. Oh, and he was approved unanimously by a Republican Senate in 2006. Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham and the rest of the current cocks who were there in ‘06 didn’t fucking care that Biden didn’t know how a train works.)

“But when you give, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

I also find it valuable to remember the traditional Jewish understanding of different levels of charity as well.

Rambam organized them into a list. The levels of charity, from the least meritorious to the most meritorious, are:

Giving begrudgingly
Giving less that you should, but giving it cheerfully.
Giving after being asked
Giving before being asked
Giving when you do not know the recipient’s identity, but the recipient knows your identity
Giving when you know the recipient’s identity, but the recipient doesn’t know your identity
Giving when neither party knows the other’s identity
Enabling the recipient to become self-reliant

It’s gonna be like ‘09-‘13, the first term of the next president is gonna be spent addressing the shitstorm that will come down on the nation’s head the moment Trump is gone.

This is why a part of me will not cry if Trump pulls out another EC victory. If he does, Republicans are finally going to have to deal with their wretched economics instead of a Democratic President emptying the mop closet for cleanup duty. Republican voters will finally get the reality of what Republican politicians are really all about as the richest suck up the wreckage and add that much more former middle class wealth to their own.

I’m getting so sick of videos about some rich person swooping down and giving some poor or needy person a life-changing amount of money and then we’re supposed to feel all warm and fuzzy about how there is hope for people who don’t have shit.

And there’s always a video of it. YouTube is constantly recommending videos about how someone tipped the pizza delivery guy with the keys to a house or a car or something that is as disposable as tissue to the person making the video. And there’s always the video.

Secret Santa videos may be the worst. “We’ve decided to surprise this janitor in front of everyone in the whole school with this extremely public act of charity. Lookit how grateful he is! It’s US that are bringing this one story of love and happiness to all of our viewers. Don’t you wish that this could happen to everybody? To YOU?

I mean, it’s nice that someone is getting help, but the giant pat-myself-on-the-back in public aspect of it pisses me off (can you tell?)

In this case, it’s more like a big fuckyou to the school district that wouldn’t let him graduate with his class unless he cut his dreads

Bill Deagle declares that the coronavirus outbreak is a sign that the End Times have arrived: “Today, January 27, 2020, is the first day of the Apocalypse. We’re in it now.”

Bill Deagle is a Christian wingnut and quack.

The Fraud of “Dr.” Bill Deagle (goes to the blog Christian Issues, the lede):

My parents were friends with Bill Deagle when he and his family lived in Colorado Springs in the mid-1990s. My parents met Bill and Michelle Deagle at Ted Haggard’s New Life Church in a small home group setting. Bill Deagle dominated my parents’ small group with talks of his strange visions. My research on the man led me to discover that one of Deagle’s many outrageous claims is that he is one of the Two Witnesses mentioned in the Book of Revelation. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a bigger ego. Deagle is also a quack medical doctor who misdiagnosed my appendix pain symptoms (in August 1995). He told me then that the pain from my stomach was not from my appendix and bragged that he had never misdiagnosed an appendicitis attack. In his pride and arrogance he tried to confuse me with medical terminology where, if I’m not mistaken, I think he was making up words (this charge is also made by other critics of him). I did not seek out an additional medical opinion. Well, my appendix eventually ruptured and almost ended my life.

Bill Deagle: Liberal Protesters Who Harass Conservatives Are ‘Going To Get Death’ (Right Wing Watch, June 29, 2018)

Earlier this week, right-wing commentator Josh Bernstein appeared on “The NutriMedical Report Show,” a radio program hosted by nutritional supplement proprietor Dr. Bill Deagle, during which Deagle repeatedly threatened to kill anyone who dares to harass him, President Trump, or any other conservative politician in America.

Outraged about recent incidents such as White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders being asked to leave a restaurant, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi being confronted by protesters, and Rep. Maxine Waters’ call for more such confrontations, Deagle declared that “these people need to understand, they’re not going to have a bad day, they’re going to die.”

Since 2015, the Trump campaign has made it a practice to give out more tickets than rally venues have seats—overselling is a classic optics trick.

I went to one of Trump’s first rallies in Derry, NH August 2015 because it was at my son’s future high school and he was interested to see the show. The auditorium holds about 750. Trump came out an hour late explaining that he had been around to all the spillover rooms for people who couldn’t get in. Almost certainly bullshit. Yep, right from the beginning.

But the RW philosophy — misogynist, racist, anti-environment, anti LGBT — they will continue to impose on our judiciary will persist for generations — and they will get additional SC seats. The damage they inflict on all aspects of our nation will be irreversible. There will be no hope for recovery; our nation will be finished.

Tom has a lot of things wrong going, but he isn’t wrong here. Said it before, but our systems were built with the assumption of good faith all around, and wasn’t meant to deal with an entire party weaponizing bad faith.

That’s a great point. They really did assume that elected officials would take their jobs seriously. It was part of Enlightenment era philosophy.

And it failed less than 100 years later.

The fun part will be when a Democrat wins and the Senate is taken over by Democrats. Because the Senate will have a month before things change. That’s going to be some serious fireworks.

“There is no hope of recovery” is the argument of conservatism itself: Don’t bother voting, let us handle it.

The 2018 and 2019 elections would seem to belie that argument; Trump continues to lose court cases even with judges appointed by Republicans, and radical centrists are starting to pay attention now.

Rep. Doug Collins (R-Wingnut Georgia) announced he is running for the US Senate against Gov. Brian Kemp’s endorsed ultra-wealthy candidate.

The endorsed candidate is a woman; Brian Kemp apparently feels she can staunch the haemorrhaging of women voters from the Republican Party.

The NRSC attacked Doug Collins as “selfish.” Trump has endorsed no candidate in this race (it is to fill out Sen. Isaskon’s term) and Georgia has David Perdue’s seat to defend as well.

I can’t imagine Trump endorsing a woman, particularly since he demanded Gov. Kemp appoint Collins to the seat.

No reports yet from the media on “Republicans in disarray.”

If Trump is re-elected and the Senate remains in GOP hands, it is hard to grasp at any optimism. Judges appointed by prior Republican presidents may retain some intellectual independence but the Trump Federalist Society hacks? It is highly doubtful that any are capable of looking outside of their RW bubble. And this SC has not been friendly to voting rights — think of a court infested with even more fanatics.

But if Trump is defeated especially if the Senate turns over, we do have a future and can begin repairing harm done to us.
