Chester County, PA COVID-19 stats as of yesterday:

Confirmed cases: 1412 (+73) <— more than the previous two days together
Total tested: 6671 (+264) <— first day over 200 tested in a week.*
Deaths: 111 (+9)

I wonder with the test counts and confirmed cases doing a larger jump roughly once a week if there is a different testing cycle or tests from an additional lab that only come in once a week.

It doesn’t matter. And I’m a white male so it’s more than my dignity is worth to bring this up. This story is supposed to end with Biden making a statement and withdrawing for the good of the party. There will always be an excuse, a trauma, another trauma to explain her.

But this has always been the subtext of armed whites, ahem, protesting. The frisson of

I could kill you, right now, unless you give me deference.

And as I have consistently said, they are not using the word government to mean law makers or the military, but absolutely anyone who stands in the way of them getting the level of submission they feel entitled to.

They aren’t hypocrites because they’ve always used words unseriously; their slogans have never expressed a genuine statement of what ought to be, in terms that they would abide by or respect. Implicit in everything they say is the assumption that they are a superior kind* and cannot be contained by rules, even their own rules…and everyone else is granted franchise and license only at their discretion. Any statement that seems a rigid commitment is, in practice, conditional on whether or not their license—their ability to do what they want—is perceived as threatened.

*not justified by any particular hierarchical pyramid, but sampling from many, because a formal order would be a tyrannical constraint of their feeling of superiority.

They feel oppressed, therefore they are oppressed because their feelings are a form of veracity.

Everyone else’s feelings are evidence of their lack of objectivity and inferiority—and not just in the moment; emotionality is a permanent mark of invalidation.

Apply this heuristic to the understanding of who gets to wield a weapon, who gets to be threatening with a weapon, who gets to claim “self defense”…and, conversely, who deserves to die because they are “seen” as a threat…and you get the current moment in American reactionary culture.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Apr 30, 2020 • 5:36:15pm

Reminiscing about my past, I go looking at information on my old home town… including property data, maps, satellite images, etc.

And I am reminded how much of a missed opportunity and creeping decline have impacted these places in “fly over” country.

Many dwellings are now over a century old.

And looking at high resolution satellite and aerial images, especially looking at changes over 10 years, I see buildings falling down, abandonment, etc.

(As an aside, I think I have figured out a puzzle that’s been with me for 50 years, why in a certain location there were what I thought were caves when I viewed them long ago, but they had doors on them at that time and it didn’t make sense to me. Now looking at the area just to the west of that place I see sinkholes (in a region not prone to them) and suspect those were mine entrances I saw, from the 19th century, and now some of the mines have collapsed and therefore sinkholes.)

Anyway, looking at this decline in middle-America, I can’t really condemn them for being desperate. When your house is worth $50k (and in many cases in my home town, half that) and you’re watching TV and see that houses in California typically go for near $1M, of course that will have an impact.

But desperation shouldn’t be a cause to gravitate towards stupidity and malice, which is what happened in that place (yes, Trump held one of his rallies before his election there.)

I’m reminded that downward spirals happen in humans because once we’ve declined to a point it becomes so very hard to fight upwards. It happens when we get old individually and we lose strength and mobility. And it happens collectively when communities start to fall apart and not enough people work to keep things up to date.

And so here we are America, the so-called “two Americas”.

I wonder how things will be in another 50 years.

And, yeah, it’s not some kind of mistake that these tactics look and sound exactly like (1) the methods used to terrorize minority groups, (2) domestic abuse.

Substance-empty chauvinism ultimately has to fall back on the same limited array of strategies to justify-and-perpetrate their preferred power imbalance.

This protest is ostensibly about your business interests.

Many if not most of the rest of us look at this and do not say, “wow let’s do business in Michigan” or “let’s vacation in Michigan”

Instead we worry that our trip there erupts into secondary violence over a performance review gone wrong or a malfunctioning gas pump. And since it’s right to work and grim it’s super unappealing doing any business there

My two cents

Depends where. Statewide, NY has not only plateaued but has started tapering off in almost every category: deaths, hospitalizations, new intubations, new confirmed cases. But that’s statewide, and it’s driven by downstate numbers.

Here in my large upstate county, the numbers have been ruler-flat for more than a week: averaging out at about 40 new confirmed cases a day, ~3 deaths, 100 net hospitalized, 23 or so in ICU. 1400 or so total confirmed cases, of which about half have now recovered, in a county of 700,000 or so.

If the goal is to show two weeks of steady decline in those numbers, the clock hasn’t even started running here.

Thanks. I should look at my county. The town I’m in is one of the COVID capitals of South Jersey. We’re not doing anywhere near as bad as North Jersey.

That said: there’s a fancy retirement home across the road from my community. There’s a less-than-stellar rehab about 200 yards up the street from that. I can walk to the fancy place in less 10 minutes.

I just found there’s at least 14 dead between the two places since this mess started. Probably more at this point. It’s why I’m starting to get antsy with these “Cant’ we all just get along” memes popping up. “It’s okay to not want to stay home as well as not wanting to go out” horseshit.

It’s not okay that people want to start opening things up, because we’re nowhere near that point to do it safely. Swear to fucking God, are countries steeped in this false balance bullshit as deeply as America is?
