(Borrowed an SUV that I can buy for $5,000 since I don’t own one.)
It’s obvious to people here I’ve never owned any stocks, but it seems to me you shouldn’t be able to sell anything you do not own. As far as I can tell, the only purpose of short selling is to extract wealth from sales of things you don’t own. In extreme cases, it’s for manipulating the market to extract wealth from it.
Currently there is short-selling of silver going on. I see no difference between selling bullion you don’t own, stocks you don’t own, and SUVs you don’t own. The key seems to be the “don’t own” part.
Max Keiser: Silver Price Gap of $500 Required to Short Squeeze Wall Street’s Fake Sell Orders (Coinbase, today)
The Reddit group Wallstreetbets is now eyeing to short squeeze silver market, one of the heavily shorted markets with the majority of the short position bought by JP Morgan. The price of silver has already risen by 6% for the day and it seems the Redditors have started buying the Silver similar to GME stocks.
With the current price of the silver spot price at $26, the price would need to go up to $500 to pull a Melvin on JP Morgan.

It keeps companies honest. At least in theory. Speculators are positive that a company is poorly run. (too many are).
Short selling is not the problem. Too much speculation is. We need to tax speculation. Warren has a plan for this.
re: #47 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
Looking at my Kitco app, it would appear the naked shorting of silver began on January 7, when the price plunged several dollars over the month.
It would appear that in the space of the last few hours, the folks at r/WallStreetBets have driven the price right back to where it was when the short started.
Expect JP Morgan to start howling that their rules are being used against them. Almost all the short position in silver is by that bank. The sudden buy-fest began immediately on the opening of the NYMEX on January 26, driving up the price a few dollars in a matter of minutes. The price then fell back a few cents over the day, but now the Hong Kong market is open and driving the price back up to its peak again.
As noted in the Coinbase article above, executing a successful short squeeze against JP Morgan’s silver position would take a lot more work than that of Melvin’s position against Game Stop.
That said, they already effectively bankrupted a hedge fund. If one of the world’s largest banks is not safe from little silver traders, perhaps that might cause some re-thinking over shorting positions (particularly if the Democrats hold firm and say “fuque yoo” to both Melvin and JP Morgan).

When I say corporate governance I refer to the rules that they should be following. Financial reporting, etc. When a company falsifies its data everyone gets hurt.
They are supposed to make money for shareholders, but that doesn’t mean they can break the rules. Just because I’m late for work, doesn’t mean I have the right to speed. My point is we need a stronger SEC.It’s late and I need to sleep.
Thank you for the clarification. I agree on a stronger SEC.

San Diego is now under the so-called “atmospheric river”, but with the low pressure system behind it speeding up and heading east we’ll only get rain until sometime later this morning.
Up in central California they had near two days of rain. Too much in one time, but at least the Sierra Nevada got some snowpack.
Where I’m at we’ve only had about a half an inch of rain since this started, but we need more. Unfornately the burn areas are on mountain slopes which are are going to get more rain, and that will cause some danger.
There is only one solution to put this nightmare pandemic behind us
Get outbreaks under control everywhere
How?
Put in place virus control policies, get people to wear high quality masks, have more testing
AND
Vaccinate the world

Moro Bay got over 5”. Farther south, Montecito, which is up the slopes from Santa Barbara, has gotten only around 2”. This illustrates how the “river” which was almost stationary and oriented SW-NE is now moving faster when oriented mostly S-N.
Still, for those of us getting rain this is a good system.
However, much of the west is still going to be in drought condition.
re: #107 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
Here in the wild north country, once again, our expectations for the upcoming weekend snow have been tempered, with the forecast falling from 3” to 1.5”, and likely going to continue to fall. However, there appears to be a major snowstorm in the mid-range forecast for next week, so we’ll see how that plays out.

It allows people to bet against them as opposed to bet that the stock is going to go up and up and up. Companies with lots of shorts sales have changed their behavior . It is good. don’t know. But I now that we would both agree that if we had better corporate governance in this country there would be less need for short sellers.
And there is also a difference between a short position and a “naked” short position since the latter fits the “selling something you don’t own” objection much more than a short position where you are borrowing *existing* shares from a lender or broker to sell with an agreement or contract to replace them within the stipulations of the contract. The “naked” position is borrowing something that is less tangible and leads to things like positions where more shares are being traded than have actually been issued.

And, why yes, there are very technical requirements for how much you need to have on hand to cover calls and suchlike, but these are put in place by the regulatory agencies.

But after watching so many of the Trump rallies and the insurrection, I’ll admit that the “sunglasses perched on hat’s bill” look is a red flag for me now (usually with some facial hair). Purely irrational, I know, but I can’t help it. That look was ubiquitous.

Republicans believe, I mean truly believe, they’re the true victims. It’s not racism, sexism, or xenophobia that are the cancers at the heart of the American dream.
Nope. It’s the struggles of white men who are being held down by the government and cancel culture.
The merging of general conservative selfishness and self-pity with religious fundamentalism over the past 40 years added a dangerous wrinkle into it. If you think you’re a victim, and the other side represents things “ungodly” and “evil,” then you can rationalize ANYTHING in pursuit of defeating anything you call evil.
That’s how you end up in civil wars and genocides

Would it be better at 80%? Absolutely.
But 66% means that getting people shots becomes even easier. General population could get this one; vulnerable populations get the Moderna/Pfizer Biontech, and then see if there’s any issues with stacking the J&J with those other shots to provide longer term immunity.

He should be losing his law license. He should be forced to pay costs for all the insane suits he filed as part of Trump’s effort to steal the election. And get mental health care he desperately needs (which thanks to Obamacare is something that he can do).

Some of us will remember a Korean influence peddling scandal (Koreagate) in Washington around 1977. What I didn’t know or remember was that the person who broke the scandal was Maxine Cheshire, the Washington Post’s “society” reporter.
Maxine Cheshire was the reporter who Sinatra called “scum” after she asked about his mob ties, who made JFK call the Post to complain she made the First Lady Cry, who worked the phones and chased scandals and enraged the powerful. Just a legend. https://t.co/WaoRCP4NRK
— Mark Berman (@markberman) January 29, 2021
According to the obit, before Woodward and Bernstein, Cheshire was the biggest headache for Ben Bradlee. Not because she was wrong—she wasn’t—but because she managed to irritate quite a few people. The obit repeats a story about JFK calling up the Post’s publisher to complain about Cheshire’s reporting on some remodeling at the White House. His complaint was that Jackie Kennedy was crying in the background.
She spent $25K a year on phone bills back in the day!
Anyway, a legend…go read.

Of course the GOP will claim that this will ring up the debt even further.
Mind you, it was GOP malfeasance from Trump on down that now requires a massive spending program to provide relief to a nation desperate to contain covid19 and stop the damage to the economy.
Had Trump done anything to stop the spread and keep people safe, we wouldn’t need another relief package. The GOP keep claiming we don’t need the stimulus.
It’s not stimulus. It’s relief. It’s money people need to pay for housing, food, and utilities. It’s to keep things from getting worse. It’s to spur investment in infrastructure. It’s to do things that will have lasting benefit, not merely shift wealth to the 1% on the backs of everyone else.

At least he wasn’t a treasonweasel who voted to decertify Joe Biden’s election results.
re: #212 lawhawk
If Biden offered another half a trillion $ to the stock market without oversight to keep it afloat, the GOP would have no problem with that, it is just the thought of all that “stupid money” he is going to be handing out so people can use their checks to thwart hedge fund managers…

re: #191 sagehen
like… the guy who Dick Cheney shot in the face. He apologized to Cheney for his face being in the way of where Dick wanted to shoot.
Actually… the shooting party was walking up quail from ground cover (the quail try to run through the cover and only fly up away from the guns if pressed). That means all the shooters stay in line as they walk forward, they don’t get in front of each other in case they catch a load of bird shot. The gentleman in question didn’t follow the safety rules, he got in front of the shooting line and got shot. Saying that the guns used for quail are typically 28-gauge and the shot size is very small — a typical 12-gauge shell-load of no. 6 shot at short range would turn a quail into shredded red mist and, in theory, the quail are supposed to be eaten afterwards.

The current one though, says “Check yourself before you wreck yourself.” It seems that we have an Ice Cube listener writing messages.

Let’s encourage Fox to stick with this type of storyline and abandon their toxic political coverage. Maybe then they could help this nation heal from the wounds they inflicted through their blind allegiance to all things Trump.

A Supreme Court *Win* On *Abortion*? What’s The Catch? (Wonkette)
The case is Planned Parenthood v Abbot.
TL;DR: Gov. Abbot of Texas used the pandemic to order abortion clinics closed as unnecessary. Amongst other things, this created a sharp rise of women fleeing the state to get abortions, which also is a problem in our current Republican-created dystopian pandemic hellscape.
Planned Parenthood appealed to the Fifth Circuit, which upheld the order. PP then appealed to the Supreme Court.
In the meantime, Abbot lifted his order, then Texas argued before the Supreme Court that the Fifth Circuit case should stay on the legal books as future precedent. The Supreme Court remanded the case back to the Fifth Circuit to declare the case moot and strike down the decision.
This is a win, because if the case had stayed, future anti-abortion cases could use the Fifth Circuit decision as precedent.
There were no written dissents in the Supreme Court order.
Petition GRANTED. Judgment VACATED and case REMANDED with instructions to dismiss the case as moot. See United States v. Munsingwear, Inc., 340 U. S. 36 (1950).
