Once I was sitting in the balcony of a theatre, waiting for a concert to start. Up there you’re near the spotlights, and I was watching the dust particles glowing and flurrying in the hot white beam, and it looked to me like a galaxy but almost infinitely sped up. Each second was a million years.

And I thought of the seconds I yearn to make last a million years, the moments of closest, breath-swapping intimacy, the dropping of your ultimate defences, with the one you love.

To take that small, fleeting moment and make it vast and enduring. That’s what that song is for.

Cleo absolutely loses her shizzle if my husband or son leave and come back. Does not matter if it’s a couple minutes or a week. When I leave and return it’s more like “oh, it’s you. What did you bring me? I also need water and perhaps to go outside. Treats? Did you bring them?” I do get tail wags and kisses, but she never loses it when I come back.

I did not watch the Tim Scott rebuttal to Biden but my sister did and she classified Scott as an idiot. She said that after claiming America was not a racist country, he mentioned that he was pulled over by the police for no particular reason and that store personnel would follow him while he was shopping. So what did he think those examples represented?

I worked for a good-ol’-boy architectural firm and decided it was hopeless after 13 months. I gave them proper notice, but my last day was on a friday where the firm had a picnic lunch outside. I went back into the building while everyone was eating hot dogs, collected all my stuff, and was gone when they came back in. That felt so satisfying.

Your sister should be commended for her perspicacity: Tim Scott has always struck me as one of the dimmer bulbs on the GOP marquee, I wonder why they picked him for the “rebuttal”? Short straw?

Just assuming he is conservative because he is a bigot? I don’t see anything in the article about his political leanings. I know plenty of card carrying union members who would never consider voting for a republican who are racist/biggoted as hell.

I have to give the company I work for credit - they had a good first quarter and announced two days ago that every employee would get a bit extra next paycheck. Same amount for everyone regardless of salary, which is a change from how they’ve done bonuses in the past.
