My company has just made things interesting. Last week, after questions from a town hall at work about when masks would no longer be required, the president got onto our site in Texas for so many people not wearing the right masks - supplied kn95 - when working close together and accounting for 40% of the company’s ongoing infections.

Today, the company came out with a letter stating that, if you have filled out or will fill out the form stating you have been vaccinated, when you have reached the two week point, they are going to mail you an ID that states so, and you will no longer be required to wear a mask.

This is going to be interesting as I know one of the people I work with refuses to get the vaccine.

As for me, I will probably use it so that I can take my mask off while sitting in my cube, but I will wear it everywhere else.

I am trying to do some preliminary packing for my trip. (Mainly sorting out what I need to take, want to take, and what will fit in the limited luggage space.)

And the cat is “helping”. By sitting in my duffel bag and swatting at any object that comes within paw range.

Did you just malign my benevolent rulership of this place?

This is how you do it. Shame the fuckers into getting vaccinated, or let them go work someplace else where assholes are welcome. Their choice.

My university just said today that if you are two weeks past last vaccine, no mask is required indoors or out for regular faculty and staff. Medical workers still have to mask. The administration is very data driven, thanks to the world famous infectious disease doctors which we have access to.

From downstairs:

re: #155 Cheechako

Yes, but I’m betting the Covid Bug will somehow squeeze through.

People are just not perfect.

True, but the cruise ship people make short, mostly outdoor stops. The only real issue, I think, would be restaurant visits, and do the “locals” really frequent those restaurants when there are boats in the harbor? I think I’d worry more about all the other transient traffic going through the panhandle. And I worry less since the vaccine protection is virtually 100% against serious illness. I would take the risk of mild flu-like illness to travel rather than stay home forever.

Actually, the moral of this, for all people everywhere, is that we can’t let our guard down. We’re going to have to keep tracking this until the world is vaccinated. And we’re never going to eliminate all risk — of many things besides covid.

hi … my throat is slowly getting better. My voice is still pretty raspy.

re: #178 EPR-radar

I’m sympathetic to the idea that feminists who want to do so can set up some women-only spaces in society. However, it seems extraordinarily difficult to do that in a way that is not intrinsically offensive to trans people, and the TERFs don’t appear to even be trying to avoid giving offense.

TERF groups are primarily Astroturf groups from right-wingers. In that way they are much like the Tea Party. The majority of the members are simply manipulated into a culture war by those with money seeking power.

Conservatives find unlikely ally in fighting transgender rights: Radical feminists (Washington Post, February 7, 2020)

The Heritage Foundation has been promoting discredited and harmful conversion therapy for years (Salon, July 28, 2019, where they show the intersection of both TERFs and gay “conversion therapy” promoted by the Heritage Foundation)

Where J.K. Rowling’s Transphobia Comes From (Vanity Fair, June 12, 2020)

The Harry Potter author’s focus on denying trans rights may seem to have come out of nowhere, but there’s a clear lineage of transphobic thought in her native country.

Women’s Liberation Front (entry at Little Sis, a group which highlights the powerful in government).

WoLF was founded in 2013 with the goal of opposing President Obama’s Title IX rules. It’s principal donor is the Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom, and it has a 501(c)4 political advocacy arm.

The TERF “movement” is entirely a conservative political movement. They care nothing about feminism, or women. The idea is to get the mass of conservative voters who are told what to think to have an “opinion” on this issue, so they will vote for the politicians who will “fix” it (conservatives). The solution is always more tax cuts and deregulation for business, and more strictures on your personal life. That suits TERFs just fine.

Hbomberguy did a research video on this four years ago (June 18, 2016). The creation of a TERF “movement” is entirely a conservative culture-war creation by powerful conservatives. This “movement” has been around for a long time and has been building for years, with the goal of taking rights. (17:10)

5 Ways Officials Have Cracked Down on Protests Since the Floyd Uprisings (May 24, 2021)

Throughout the summer of 2020, uprisings erupted across the nation in response to the police murder of George Floyd. Demonstrators took over highways and sidewalks, marching late into the night; some cities experienced property destruction, burning cop cars, and brutal police violence. In an attempt to quell the protests, local and state governments issued curfews, brought in the National Guard, and used political and police repression. Since then, these tactics have continued to the point where some cities now preemptively issue curfews if there is any fear of political unrest.

Speaking of protests:

Omaha ‘fed up’ with hateful acts, Stothert says of pig roast protest outside police union hall (Omaha World-Herald)

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert on Monday skewered a weekend protest that featured severed pig heads wearing costume police caps, suggesting that Omahans “are fed up with hateful and divisive acts.”

Stothert was responding to a Saturday evening gathering at Montclair Park. Attendees there condemned the Omaha Police Officers Association and its president, Sgt. Anthony Conner, for distributing a flyer targeting former independent City Council candidate Cammy Watkins as being anti-police.

Cammy Watkins is Black, and the flyer was also incredibly racist.

Following a “pig roast” and speeches in the park, a group of 40 to 50 people walked to the nearby police union hall near 134th Street and West Center Road to leave copies of the Watkins flyer and the heads of three pigs that they had gotten from a packinghouse worker, an organizer told The World-Herald.

Police said four announcements were made over a 10-minute period, telling the protesters that they were trespassing on private property and must leave. A command officer eventually declared an unlawful assembly and ordered the protesters to leave.

As noted in the Teen Vogue article above, inconvenient protests can be declared “unlawful,” then every protestor (and people not involved who happen to be in the area) can be arrested and charged, costing them money and time.

Seven people were arrested on suspicion of various potential crimes, including trespassing, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct, obstructing, littering and unlawful assembly, a police spokesman said.

Five of those are restrictions on the I Amendment right to protest. The littering charge is for returning their racist flyers to them.

In vexillology, some Nebraskans are trying to change the state flag again.

Jack Sokolik has, to put it lightly, never been a fan of Nebraska’s state flag.

The “seal on a bed sheet” design — what flag enthusiasts call an SOB — makes Nebraska’s banner nearly indistinguishable from 28 other states that have similar flags.

That’s strike one for many.

The state seal that’s centered on the flag, is “fine for a seal, if a little busy for my liking,” Sokolik said, even if it seems to forget it’s representing the Cornhusker State.

A train barrels down the tracks below a mountain range while a steamboat chugs up the Missouri River, meaning the land depicted on the other side is that of Iowa.

“I personally don’t want Iowa on my state’s flag,” Sokolik said.

Strike two.

The third strike is the seal’s self-proclamation as “The Great Seal of the State of Nebraska” which is featured more prominently than the state’s motto: “Equality before the law.”

“It’s a big middle finger when it comes to good design,” Sokolik said.

The state flag was flown upside-down on the state capitol building for ten days before someone noticed it.

After flub at Capitol, Nebraskans say state flag should be changed (OWH)

The right one seems good: it’s essentially the Ukrainian flag with a flower on it (blue and yellow for the same reason as Ukraine, presumably).

This is why I advise people to expand their selection of targets.

For example, the Southern Baptist Convention is coming stark staring unglued over “Critical Race Theory.” Careful research will likely find some large SBC church where the pastor has babbled on about CRT and gee, maybe he needs a picket at the most segregated hour of the day.

As for me, I still have Mark Driscoll to deal with, and Apologia Church has popped up again. It’s not enough for the latter to want to execute women who have abortions, they’re going on about the “woke church” and basically anyone who isn’t their brand of Christian is going to hell. OH YEAH and they’re starting an offshoot in Salt Lake City where the neighbors will have smiles of welcome that will disappear off their faces when the Apologia people start being assholes. Which should be very soon now.

Anymouse, one of the elders of Apologia here in Mesa is one “Dr.” James White, an apologist (runs his own ministry). He used to be somewhat respected in a certain sector of Evangelicals but he’s been slowly but surely drawing the circle of acceptable Christians tighter over the years as his views have hardened. The last times I picketed, I pointed out that James was a stone racist and I guess I’m going to have to go back to that.

Now I must go to bed. That being up all night Saturday night really messed up my sleep cycles.

…the first Minister of Health, Adam Vojtěch, who left last year.

PM Babiš simply cannot find a credible doctor* willing to associate themselves with him by accepting a ministerial position, so it’s back to square one - in this case, quite literally.

The US has issued a travel warning for Japan over the country’s Covid-19 surge, amid heightened scrutiny just weeks before the Tokyo Olympics.

But US Olympic officials have said they are confident their athletes will be able to take part safely in the Games.

Japan already bans most travellers from entering the country.

It long had low numbers of Covid cases but is now seeing a fresh wave of infections pushing the healthcare system in some cities to its limit.

Japan has recorded more than 700,000 infections and 12,000 Covid-19 deaths from the virus.

As to a certain youtuber apparently not having read the study he using to attempt to debunk another study, it’s something I’ve seen time and time again from a certain part of the religio-political spectrum…
I don’t know if it is outright stupidity, outright dishonesty, that they get their talking points from someone else (and trust it enough not to do even a cursory fact check on them), or that they let their feelings cloud their judgment so badly it makes their perception highly questionable.
But it’s a recurring pattern, so much so that when someone from that certain part of the religio-political spectrum cites what appears to be a mainstream science paper, I read said paper. More often than not, I’ve seen that the paper does not say what the individual from a certain part of the religio-political spectrum says, and it has happened more than a few times that the paper has said exactly the opposite of what they claim it does.
And don’t get me started on the studies from “their” scientists…

AUSTIN, Texas — A Fort Bliss judge sentenced a soldier to more than 40 years in prison for murdering a child with his hands, along with a string of other charges including drug use and domestic violence, according to officials at the Texas Army base.

Pfc. Luis Morales-Sanchez, 24, pleaded guilty to willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer, making a false official statement, using cocaine, simple assault, assault consummated by a battery, aggravated assault and conducting an extramarital affair, according to Fort Bliss.

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration Justice Department secretly obtained the 2017 phone records of a CNN correspondent, the network said Thursday in revealing the existence of another apparent leak investigation aimed at identifying a journalist’s sources.

The revelation comes two weeks after The Washington Post disclosed that the Justice Department had last year seized phone records belonging to three of its journalists who covered the Russia investigation.

CNN said the Justice Department informed Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr in a May 13 letter that it had obtained phone and email records covering a two-month period between June 1 and July 31, 2017.

“CNN strongly condemns the secret collection of any aspect of a journalist’s correspondence, which is clearly protected by the First Amendment,” CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement published by the network. “We are asking for an immediate meeting with the Justice Department for an explanation.”

I think the papers might be getting themselves into some sort of death spiral. Younger people are not reading them (in part due to their slanted coverage and other errors) in favor of other sources. So they look at their subscribers and slant stuff to match those demographics. And I think the demographics are old and white. So they slant things to appeal to those groups. Which loses them other groups and they face an ever shrinking base.

These same guys were the kind of bikers who would complain about police stopping them for blowing stop signs and otherwise not following the rules of the road when they were on the road. I mean, if you’re fit enough to do that on a regular basis, good on you, but up here in the north where it is literally not viable to bike anywhere for 6 months of the year, let alone a long-distance commute, it’s an incredibly bad read to say that bikes are the green future.

I looked into bicycling into work a few times. The main sticking point was the lack of a secure place to put my bicycle while I was at work.

One place on the outskirts of Pittsburgh I worked at let me keep my bike in a storage area since the one bike rack they had was full. I would go in early and ride before work, or go out on my lunch hour and do a loop of 7-8 miles. This worked out fairly well since the location had shower/locker room facilities so I could wash up afterwards. (Also really nice since a bunch of us would also go play basketball at lunch as well.)

Around here, it’s trail crossings. They are clearly marked with STOP signs (or, more recently, YIELD signs - which I feel is better, and should generate less complaints from the bikers, who shouldn’t have to stop if there’s no traffic) and “Cross traffic does not stop” signs. AND YET, bicyclists will just blow right on through, expecting cars to stop, and idiots on the road WILL STILL STOP for bikes who do stop and wait. You don’t have to hold up the flow of traffic for bikes, people!

No. It didn’t do a fucking thing except magic balance fairy what Greene said with Speaker Pelosi.

His statement:

“Marjorie is wrong, and her intentional decision to compare the horrors of the Holocaust with wearing masks is appalling. The Holocaust is the greatest atrocity committed in history. The fact that this needs to be stated today is deeply troubling.

“At a time when the Jewish people face increased violence and threats, anti-Semitism is on the rise in the Democrat Party and is completely ignored by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“Americans must stand together to defeat anti-Semitism and any attempt to diminish the history of the Holocaust.

“Let me be clear: the House Republican Conference condemns this language.”

Greene and the GOP are going full Nazi, and covering for the most extreme members of his caucus. He’s covered for white nationalists from Gosar to Scalise, but somehow he found a way to equate all of that with Speaker Pelosi?

Fuck him, and fuck this statement.

The idea that the Holocaust is a unique horror, and the Nazis were unique and not a continuation of the prevailing rationales of colonialism is precisely why fuckers like this use it as a rhetorical football.

Rather than addressing as a real thing that happened because of processes intermeshed with power wielded by people who were the product of cultures and ideas, it’s become this moral fetish to be rolled out when shitheads need a prop.

Republicans have so many versions of “X is the Holocaust” because there’s a deeper cultural flaw they’re exploiting: that post-WW2 all the victors piled their own atrocious histories—of anti-Semitism, of state violence, of genocide—onto a single, damnably guilty scapegoat…laundering black deeds by covering them with something darker than black.

This dance keeps happening because society accepts the fetishization of history: one either invokes the Holocaust or wards against it, one does not grind its details and human-level tragedy and context to ask “how?” at finer and finer levels while seeking comparisons.

And America…this is all we do. Constantly fucking run from history by creating stories that have a rising action. These people are fucking conjuring with the Shoah while shitting on the 1619 Project because they’ve decided that they can extract value from the former…but the latter is pure inconvenience.

Ummmm…

After a Black 19-year-old was found dead in what police determined was a suicide, the young man’s grieving family is pushing for more information and questioning the way police have handled the tragedy. According to the family, Derontae Martin was a happy, outgoing, and fun former football player who worked at a restaurant and Walmart. He was found dead after attending a prom party on April 25, as reported by the Associated Press.

The prom party was hosted in the rural home of a middle-aged white man who shared racist posts on Facebook, including one of a Confederate flag. The man also shared a meme that says “Here’s my apology for being white” along with a middle finger. Martin was found dead in the attic of this man’s home, whose name has not been released because he has not been charged with a crime. Martin’s family—and local activists—want answers.

Martin’s mother, Ericka Lotts, said, “All I do know is that somebody shot him.” She mentioned that at the time of his death, Martin, who was right-handed, had a cast on his right arm, which had been broken. Lotts said she’d heard multiple different accounts of what happened and doesn’t know what to believe.

certainly looks suspicious to me.

Mark Elias at Democracy Docket

How Fannie Lou Hamer Created a Tool to Fight Voter Suppression Today

In 1964, civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer had a bold idea. A Black woman, she would run for Congress in the Democratic primary in Mississippi. Her opponent would be the pro-segregationist, white incumbent Jamie Whitten. At the time, Black citizens comprised 52.4% of the Congressional District’s population, but less than 3% of its registered voters.

While she lost the primary 35,218 to 621, she set in motion one of the most consequential House election contests in history. And she may well have set the stage for the use of that process to fight voter suppression today.

Our across the street neighbor has this big-ass succulent in her yard, and she yanked a volunteer from near the base of it out of the ground about 6 weeks ago and handed it to me. I tossed it under one of my hydrangeas and promised to find a home for it in the back yard…it’s still lying there -root ball exposed, with new blooms…I suspect it re-rooted itself.

Just finished 2034: A Novel of the Next World War

Has a lot of good reviews. I was sort of *eh* about the book even though it was written by a famous admiral and a marine infantry officer. Nothing wrong with the prose…I just couldn’t buy some of the scenario assumption. The starting incident is standard Tonkin Gulf stuff, so fair enough. Some sort of Chinese cyberweapon directed at the US military in a war is an absolute given. A cyberweapon that results in 2 dozen US warships lost for zero Chinese losses? Hmm.

Things eventually go nuclear. Again, that isn’t really far fetched if China has invaded Taiwan and taken out power etc to most of the US. We use tactical nukes, but on strategic targets. I’m not sure that is even remotely containable. We use dumbed down F/A18 fighters (with almost all the avionics removed because CYBERWARFARE LOL) to deliver the nukes. JFC Tom Clancy had LA class subs with Tomahawk missiles doing this stuff back in 1986. We don’t have Tomahawks or their hypersonic replacement in 2034??? Along the way San Diego and Galveston get nuked by Chinese drones in retaliation for our nuke on one of their naval ports. (I think the scenario would end exactly right here because I don’t see any way we don’t go to strategic weapons at that point)

Somehow India now has a massive blue water naval capability and sinks the SOOPER CHINA CARRIER we can’t seem to find or sink, and then starts shooting down our planes to keep us from blowing up lots of China. Shanghai and 30 million people still get fireballed into radioactive ashes. And then…it all stops because India sez so?

Huh???

50 million people dead on both sides on India just says STOP OR ELSE!

Or else what?

The authors gloss over US public stuff to a shocking degree. The only hint of antipathy to Chinese Americans or Chinese immigrants is a near deserted Chinese sit down restaurant in DC. With two mid range US cities turned to ashes, I can well imagine there would be organized 1920 Tulsa style pogroms and mass shootings. I can also imagine LE not doing much to stop it.

As a final coda, a major Chinese naval character is executed and his wife and daughter flee here. I almost literally LOL’ed that one. Seriously? We would allow the wife and daughter of a major architect of a nuclear war that killed millions of Americans to just come on over sure why not?

So, yeah.

File under “Swedish Total Defence Institute (FOI) reports in Swedish that give me the heebee jeebees “:

“Kärnvapenscenario för räddningstjänst” (EN: “Nuclear Weapons Scenario for Rescue Services”)

Here is a summary of what we consider to be important circumstances for the rescue service in the event of a nuclear attack: After a nuclear explosion, the information will be very deficient. It will not be possible to estimate the harmful effects, and the presence of radioactive fallout will not be known. Initial radiation dose forecasts can be flawed. In the event of an explosion in or near an urban area, thousands of dead and injured can be expected from the immediate effects. Extensive building landslides make it difficult to get around. Likewise, other infrastructure such as mobile masts, overhead lines and bridges may be damaged or knocked out. Own indication and dose measurement ability is crucial to be able to act in the area. Rescue services in the area may be directly affected and need to prioritize their own radiation protection, while resources that have arrived need to work their way into the disaster area. Precipitation in the wind direction spreads roughly estimated with the wind speed. Radiation dose rates can vary greatly depending on where and how they are measured. You need to be observant of the current radiation dose rate, length of stay and how long the stay can continue before the dose limit is reached. The residual radiation may be negligible in an air explosion, but the direct effects will be more extensive than in a ground explosion. The overall conclusion is that the situation will be chaotic with major casualties, but in part it is similar to the everyday life that the rescue service is used to facing. The big difference is the extent, as well as the difficulties of working in potentially life-threatening radiation dose environments where personal radiation protection is crucial.

Unlike elsewhere, the Swedish Total Defence Research Agency doesn’t spend money on spurious projects, there’s usually a reason for their research topics. So when they do a report on Rescue Services capabilities in the event of a nuclear attack, it is worriesome…
