Super Duty rolling off the line
Kentucky has been hit especially hard by the Omicron variant, which is proving less deadly but still filling hospitals.

“Our plants are a reflection of the communities in which they are located,” Felker said.

Kentucky Truck builds the Super Duty, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator while Louisville Assembly makes the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair. And workers have been working overtime between the two plants there.

The statewide rate of Kentucky residents testing positive hit 33% on Monday, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. Last week’s number of new coronavirus cases set another record at 83,159. Over the weekend, the state reported 25,445 new cases, and on Monday, another 3,912, the newspaper said.

A 31-year-old man in need of a heart transplant has been bumped from the transplant list at Brigham and Women’s Hospital because he won’t get vaccinated against Covid-19, CBS Boston reports.

Said Dr. Arthur Caplan: “The flu could kill you, a cold could kill you, Covid could kill you. The organs are scarce, we are not going to distribute them to someone who has a poor chance of living when others who are vaccinated have a better chance post-surgery of surviving.”

I don’t have mixed thoughts at all. You don’t give organs to suicidal people when people who want to live need them. If you can cure them of their suicidal impulses, that’s great, but they don’t deserve another person’s organs while they’re in a state where they’ll destroy them.

There are insufficient organs available for all who need them; it is a scarce resource. Hospitals have to make these decisions all the time. If it is clear that a patient will not follow the protocols to ensure that the transplant is successful, there is another patient who is desperate for the organ.

Not a single mixed thought here. There are very limited spare body parts. There is a long waiting list. Why should someone who could die from the transplant be allowed to get that limited body part and then, if they manage to live through the transplant process, die from a mostly preventable virus. That is so unfair to the hundreds of people waiting in the wings.

That’s a big deal for doctors when making decisions like this. Patients who are doing the things the doctors are asking of them and trying their best to make sure that transplant is successful are going to be a lot less likely to be taken off or moved down the list. It would be different if there was a surplus of organs for transplants but there aren’t and won’t likely ever be, until we figure out how to make functional organs from something other than human tissue. You’ll also get more attention, time and concern from any doctor if you listen, ask questions and follow their medical advice.

Since when the hell is “Finesse” slang? That usage has been around for decades as far as I know.

Might be going for the more-slangy usage as a verb rather than a noun.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, a frequent critic of President Joe Biden, said on Tuesday that he is seeing “encouraging” signs from the administration about its approach to deterring further Russian aggression towards Ukraine.

McConnell said Biden now appears to be adopting the right approach to Ukraine following a weekend meeting with his security team at Camp David. McConnell last week said Biden had “telegraphed passivity and weakness” on the issue.

“What I’ve been hearing since then is encouraging, that they’re prepared to take steps before an incursion, not afterwards,” McConnell said at a news conference in Frankfort, Kentucky.

“It appears to me the administration is moving in the right direction,” he added.

Russia has massed an estimated 100,000 troops near Ukraine’s border, raising alarm in the West that Moscow is preparing for a new military assault after its invasion of Crimea in 2014.

NATO said Monday it was putting troops on standby and reinforcing eastern Europe with more ships and fighter planes. The United States has also said that about 8,500 U.S. troops have been put on heightened alert and could deploy to the region.

McConnell urged the immediate deployment of NATO troops to Poland, Romania and the Baltic states, as well as the shipment of anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons to Ukraine.

The Kentucky Republican is among party members who advocate a tough line against Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a time when conservative commentators like Fox News host Tucker Carlson have questioned the need for the United States to take sides.

“My office is now getting calls from folks who say they watch Tucker Carlson and are upset that we’re not siding with Russia in its threats to invade Ukraine, and who want me to support Russia’s ‘reasonable’ positions,” Democratic U.S. Representative Tom Malinowski tweeted on Monday.

Bravo announced the firing on Jan. 25 in a statement that read, “Bravo has ceased filming with Jennie Nguyen and she will no longer be a cast member on ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.’”

“We recognize we failed to take appropriate action once her offensive social media posts were brought to our attention,” the statement continued. “Moving forward, we will work to improve our processes to ensure we make better informed and more thoughtful casting decisions.”

The writing seemed to be on the wall. Just hours before the firing, “Housewives” executive producer Andy Cohen called the reality TV star’s comments “upsetting … and disgusting.” On his SiriusXM show, “Radio Andy,” he also hinted that a shakeup was coming.

Democrats Need to Do What They Will Never Do: Burn the GOP Down
rudepundit.blogspot.com

If nothing else, we should thank disgraced former House Speaker and a fatberg clogging up the sewers of the body politic Newt Gingrich for saying what the Republican Party really stands for now. On some fucking Fox “news” show with Maria Bartiromo, who is really just a slightly more sober Jeanine Pirro, Gingrich explained how a Republican-controlled Congress would subpoena everything from the members of the January 6 special committee and concluded, “I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down and the wolves will find out that they are now sheep and they are the ones who are…in fact, I think, face a risk of jail for the kind of laws they are breaking.”

I think that description of Gingrich is worth preserving.

The genie was out of the bottle once you saw cases worldwide from people who did not go to Wuhan. Genetic analysis of SARS-Cov-2 in early cases shows a lot in common with Europe. Most likely was Wuhan - Northern Italy - US, in addition to Wuhan - US. Paris was hit hard early, too. Stopping just flights from China to US would have slowed it a bit, but NOTHING was going stop this.

Back from irl…

Glad you found the links interesting!

Like you, I am glad that I am no longer in. I concluded that when Bush the shrub invaded Iraq for little reason beyond hubris.

I also remember that class in counter-battery location. Don’t forget putting the two sticks in the ground to help determine direction. :)

I remember one set of Nasty-Guard maneuvers at Ft Chaffee JLRTC. The powers-that-be located the brigade counter-battery radar unit forward. Without giving it any infantry security. It was ‘destroyed’ the very first night by Opfor.

Of course, even just getting to (and, now that I think about it, getting from) the maneuver area on post was quite a fascinating goat rope.

Meanwhile in Kentucky:

A judge ruled Tuesday that state officials cannot withhold emails about public business under the Kentucky Open Records Act simply by sending them through their personal accounts on private devices.

“The court admonishes state employees, officials and volunteers from using privately owned devices and accounts to conduct state business. However, the ultimate responsibility with enforcement rests with state agencies,” Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate wrote.

Wingate ruled in an open records appeal involving the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

An advocacy group, the Kentucky Open Government Coalition, last year requested copies of emails and texts between a handful of Fish & Wildlife commissioners and state lawmakers after a controversy over the hiring of a new leader at the agency.

Fish & Wildlife told the advocacy group that some emails and texts were unavailable because the commissioners used their own personal email accounts and phones to communicate with each other, not state devices, and so the agency didn’t have possession of those records.

Having a competent administration and a CDC/NIH engaged with the WHO and Chinese counterparts with boots on the ground in China might have got this under control in November 2019. We had a clown show.

The difference between COVID and SARS, MERS, and Ebola? Even GWB was a competent administration compared to the clown show.

There’s a realistic if small chance that if E-Mail Lady was president none of this would have happened. But alas… we had the clown show.

Or Chinese people making a routine trip. I don’t know the statistics for that travel.

re: #170 Belafon

I’m about 90% certain the virus got into America via white people traveling to China and coming back.

Italian fashion houses brought in a bunch of Chinese seamstresses (as they do each year) to sew clothing for Milan Fashion Week in January. A lot of those professional sewers were from Wuhan.

That’s why it went from China to northern Italy to Spain (a big soccer match in the Europa League between a Spanish team and an Italian team just outside of Milan) in early February.

A bunch of buyers from the State’s brought it back into NYC, and off we went.

GOOD.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Hundreds of Western Michigan University students have been fined by the school since its new COVID-19 testing policy took effect on Jan. 10.

Last month, the university announced it will start fining students who miss their weekly tests. Students in the weekly testing protocols are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19. WMU said in order to be considered fully vaccinated, a booster shot is required.

A school official told News Channel 3 that students had been fined $60,050 as of Tuesday afternoon and that money would be used to offset COVID-19 testing costs.

For those who miss a test, they’ll be fined $50 for the first five misses. Then, the fine will increase to $100 for each miss after that. Once a student owes more than $300, the individual cannot register for classes, according to the school.

“I knew the school would have ups and downs trying to handle it,” said sophomore Dayton Porter.

“There might be some instances where testing might be a little inconvenient for students, but I think its the best way to do things,” said senior Giselly Silva.

During week one of the spring semester, 678 students were fined for missing weekly tests. In week two, the number dropped to 523. Some of them were people who were fined twice, according to WMU.

“We’ve been in the pandemic nearly two years now. We have to start holding the school more accountable,” Porter said.

I am actually surprised, because it’s Arizona and all, but apparently if 3 percent of the school tests positive for COVID, then the entire school population has to wear masks for 10 days.

Which indicates to me that COVID must be running rampant through at least the special ed portion of the Mesa Public Schools. (Next door neighbor kid is in the autism program.)
