And if the Russians start carrying out a genocide, like the Serbs did in Bosnia? We just let them get away with it?

We did in Syria and Chechnya. Getting into a shooting war with another nuclear power is a very dangerous game. Let us hope something stops Putin before he does that.

People have been slaughtering their kin forever; for ideology, for nationality, for territory. I doubt that most Russians would hesitate. The million Cambodians Pol Pot murdered were not of a different ethnic group. The bloodshed in Russia before WW2 did not involve battles because of different ethnicity. Nor was our own Civil War. The soldiers will do what they’re told, if they can. It’s only if they are wounded or disarmed that they may rethink their actions.

“Since the invasion, Biden has been a full partner with our European allies. He has not pushed them into decisions. He recognized that having a united front was more important than any particular aspect of the response. And after only four days Europe came to the conclusion—on its own—that it would do everything the American foreign policy establishment had wanted. Biden understood that these countries needed to come to the decision to fight back on their own, and not be publicly cajoled into it.”

“Biden also understood that the EU and NATO are actually very powerful allies and that when they work in concert with the United States, we represent a significant geopolitical force.”

It’s easier to slaughter the other. The one who looks different. Acts different. Prays differently. Has different values.

Ukraine is a sovereign nation and Russia has spent centuries trying to occupy and control it in one form or another. Putin has let his imperialist streak show, ignoring the long history of Ukrainian independence. He doesn’t care.

I have to wonder if Ukraine/Zelenskyy was playing some rope-a-dope in coordination with NATO, EU, etc. Ukraine was insistent Russia wouldn’t be attacking, while the US/EU/NATO kept banging the drum the attack was imminent. Russia perhaps was lulled into some false level of security.

That doesn’t really make sense to me, because why would Zelenskyy want Russia to think invading Ukraine would be a cakewalk? That just invites Putin to try, with devastating consequences for Ukraine.

My initial reaction was to protest this move, but if the equipment is as banged up as the armchair generals on Twitter have been saying, I’m not sure the Ukrainians would actually want to try to use it. It’s as likely to blow up in their own faces as it is to work correctly. Plus, denying the enemy the chance to come and take it back.

Latvia is ready to give refuge in the West to Russian soldiers who refuse to use weapons against Ukraine.

This was announced by adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko in the Telegram channel.

“Latvians are ready to give refuge in the West to Russian soldiers who refused to use weapons against Ukraine. They will be hosted by countries that are not involved in the supply of weapons for the Ukrainian army,” Gerashchenko wrote.

In his opinion, this could be a turning point.

“Russian troops are demoralized. They don’t want to fight. The opportunity to go to live in Europe for them is a matter of survival,” the minister’s adviser emphasized.

That doesn’t really make sense to me, because why would Zelenskyy want Russia to think invading Ukraine would be a cakewalk? That just invites Putin to try, with devastating consequences for Ukraine.

If Ukraine, privately, understood the decision to invade was already made, then giving off signals Ukraine might not have been as prepared as they actually were wouldn’t be a bad plan.

Good article here on Russian Logistics. It is from last November, but it talks about what we’ve seen and why. Basically? The Russian Army isn’t designed for long offensive campaigns but would be hell on defense.

FEEDING THE BEAR: A CLOSER LOOK AT RUSSIAN ARMY LOGISTICS AND THE FAIT ACCOMPLI

Railroads and Russian Logistics Capabilities

Russian army logistics forces are not designed for a large-scale ground offensive far from their railroads. Inside maneuver units, Russian sustainment units are a size lower than their Western counterparts. Only brigades have an equivalent logistics capability, but it’s not an exact comparison. Russian formations have only three-quarters the number of combat vehicles as their U.S. counterparts but almost three times as much artillery. On paper (not all brigades have a full number of battalions), Russian brigades have two artillery battalions, a rocket battalion, and two air defense battalions per brigade as opposed to one artillery battalion and an attached air defense company per U.S. brigade. As a result of extra artillery and air defense battalions, the Russian logistics requirements are much larger than their U.S. counterparts.

If any potential US Troops are injured or killed in the Ukraine theater MAGA types will applaud their deaths. Don’t be surprised if that happens.

MAGA Nazis are 100% in the tank for Putin as they have considered themselves at war with the rest of the USA for years and against most of the world as well. Putin is viewed as their best chance in their own desire for white supremacy in the US. The Republican Party nominee is secondary and easily replaceable with the next pandering fascist in line. Putin and his Oligarch cronies mean continued money, cyber warfare, and propaganda to directly fuel their cause.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Feb 28, 2022 • 4:30:44pm

All of this right-wing GOP support for Putin goes back a few decades, when Putin spoke about the US being open to another civil war.

The oligarchs and Putin are very much aware of the existential angst that Confederate-lovers, the religious-right, and similar groups have in the US.

It’s an easy thing to get the grievance -addicted, deeply bigoted people in the US to engage in fantasies.

At best I think we will survive this and keep marching on, but I also think our society is struggling to come to terms with implications of modern life. Too many Americans are caught up into religious cults and similar conspiracy-type thinking.

Maybe in 20 or 30 years we will be better off, but given how slowly people’s beliefs change I won’t bet on it. Maybe I’ll be alive then, maybe not. If I am, I will try to think of these times and see if I missed the mark on our collective angst.

Red is Bakelite, a form of plastic that makes much lighter magazines than the traditional steel ones. For the Former Soviet Union, the red color was a plus.

I use Serbian polymer mags for my AK. Black, lighter and much less prone to breakage than the Bakelite ones. They also have a bolt hold open follower for the last round which is much better than the Click on an empty chamber telling you you’re empty.

They’re made of plastic. (Or more exactly fibreglass)

Almost no magazines are blued (a process for rustproofing steel), they are usually designed as as more or less disposable, originally made in stamped steel, rarely painted, later in aluminium, more recently in different kinds of “plastics”.

(And no, they are not made of Bakelite, a 19th century “plastic” based on urea, that is a much darker brown and far too brittle for such a job).

When I was in the AF, any flight over 4 hours required meals be supplied to the crew. On a good day (we had real military cooks back then), it would be fried chicken (AKA In-flight Chicken). On a bad day it would be a pre-Vietnam MCI (Meal, Combat, Individual) and this was in the early 80’s. If I got Ham & Black Eyed Peas in the Meat Ration (Ham and Motherfuckers), it went up for trade (Anyone like Ham and Mothers?).

Awful. Awful food. Not edible.

Don’t forget the Ham and Eggs, chopped or the Tuna Fish. Some mayo and celery and I suppose the tuna wouldn’t have been bad, but no fridge meant no mayo.

I was in a deployable staff element when they first put the tiny bottles of hot sauce in the MREs. Brought tears to MSG Rios’ eyes. He wired one to his dogtag chain.
