Back in the 1970’s there was a TV series titled “Connections”. (With follow-ons in the 1990’s.)

In each show the narrator would start with a simple observation and by the end of the show, he was talking about some major idea of global historical importance.

This thread kind of reminded me of that. It starts off with a small observation. And then traces it to questions of International economic and financial importance:

re: #111 Eclectic Cyborg

I’m not a biologist or a doctor, but I’m curious.

Generally speaking, would a trans female who was born male have a biological advantage in an athletic competition over a cis female or not?

I know the wingnuts repeat this like it’s Gospel but I’d love to see what the science actually says.

re: #133 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

Nope. We loose muscle mass and bone density due to the HRT. We have to work like hell to keep what we have (I take a calcium supplement to support bone density). Hell, I have problems with opening a jar anymore. And don’t even ask me to pick up that 50 lb bag of whatever by myself, It’s not going to happen. But, in all honesty, I am 60 yrs old.

While it’s still something that’s being actively studied, I’m pretty sure the NCAA themselves have based rules on studies showing that HRT after two years pretty much puts things in line with their cis peers. Which isn’t terribly surprising actually, because our bodies are a whole mess of tenuously stable homeostasis at best, it’s not as if our bodies, muscles, bone structure, etc. become frozen in time once we hit puberty. Otherwise, bone degeneration and the like would never happen when one or two things go out of whack on their own. And a medically regulated HRT process would certainly be able to track such things on their own too, it’s not the hack-and-slash job that transphobes would tend to suggest it would.

Unfortunately, optics are king, and transphobes have latched onto the very sophisticated arguments of ‘well, just look at them?! How can you say they’re a woman?!’ and win the day. They can point to highly selectively pushed results and say there’s no other reason for these results except ‘Just look at them?!’, even when previous records and results show nowhere near the sort of dominance as they claim, nowhere near the pushing out of cis peers out of the spotlight. This kind of thing came up in suit against two trans runners, I believe, where the plaintiffs claimed the two athletes in question represented an impossible barrier to success for them, when it was later pointed out that a couple of the plaintiffs had several direct races against one of the defendents, and outperformed them on the regular.

The problem isn’t the science. It’s the selective science, and the god of optics and first impressions. And those last two are hard to defeat with a media landscape that allows abusive bigots to DARVO their way to success.

It is really obnoxious to have to participate in someone else’s stupidity.

Around here it seems to be roofing nails and drywall screws on the roads. Certainly my tires have done a great job of finding them.

The last two tweets. Wow.

I wanted to follow up on this from the previous topic since the new topic came up before I could get a chance to

I think (but could be wrong) that most trans children are not undergoing HRT at that age and therein, I suspect, lies the biggest bigotty problem (boys in dresses!!11!! etc etc O_o)

re: #159 darthstar

Ugh…going to the office today to help onboard a bunch of people to a new testing solution I bought last year. Now lots of teams are interested in it because ‘codeless testing’…
But I have to get up, walk the dogs, SHOWER…jesus…and then drive.

Can I just say that this going to work thing is fucking bullshit? First I had to bathe…then there’s traffic(not too much as I only catch the tail end of it after getting off the coast road), then there’s the last mile and a half in the city (+25 minutes)…overall a good day, but jesus, getting home at 5pm? WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DOES THAT? (I would have left at 3:00 but an executive had a 3-4pm call I needed to be on). Tuesdays/Thursdays going forward, and 10-2pm (off rush) at the office to record my badge then I’m home to finish the day.

For late high-school and college-level athletes, HRT is absolutely on the table. Lia Thomas literally wouldn’t have been allowed to compete in women’s athletics without it and even had to compete with the men for some time while still undergoing HRT (which is why she had a noticable relative performance dip before this year). For younger children, that’s what puberty blockers are for. And since it’s a favorite hobby horse/distraction for transphobes, it’s worth noting that puberty blockers aren’t permanent, should the child reconsider.

YIKES!
‘It was not a crime’: Denver man faces felony after city accuses him of making pickleball court without permission

DENVER — A 71-year-old Denver man is facing a felony charge after city officials say he made a pickleball court without permission. With prosecution on the table, some believe the punishment doesn’t fit the crime.

“The whole pickleball community is really saddened and shocked,” said Jan Devor, a friend of 71-year-old Arslan Guney and fellow pickleball player.

Guney and others use a basketball court at Denver’s Central Park Recreation Center for pickleball. Last Monday, the markings on the court had faded, so Guney re-marked them with a Sharpie.

Three days later, an arrest warrant for felony criminal mischief was issued for Guney. The court document also claims ten thousand dollars in damages.

snip

Denver Parks and Recreation declined to sit down for an interview with Denver7. Instead, they provided an statement:

“It is our duty and responsibility to the citizens of Denver to protect city assets and public property. Defacing or damaging public property is unacceptable, a criminal offense and will not be tolerated in any of our public buildings or spaces. Law enforcement is aware of the damage and the incident is being investigated. Pickleball play was temporarily suspended to assess the damage and related repairs.”

A spokesperson added pickleball play has since resumed.

jeebus, who knew that a Sharpie was criminal (except in the hands of tfg)?

well, I was thinking more along the lines of the current hysteria in Kentucky, which involves grades 6 and up, not so much late high school and definitely not college.

I believe that around or just a little after the age that you can start puberty blockers at the earliest, so yeah.

Oh, and I couldn’t take a pic because I didn’t have time to unlock my phone, but as I came through the Tom Lantos tunnel south of Pacifica, there was one man standing by the edge of the cliff (on the road side of the railing) on Devil’s Slide waving a Ukrainian flag. I honked like a motherfucker and waved at him…he waved back.

I don’t poke around family details, I’m just used to kids being allowed to express themselves from very early ages (like preschool, even) and let things go that way until they are a lot older. And, trust me, I’ve seen this a lot over the decades. Only thing that harms the kids IMHO are telling them they are “wrong”. Just let the kids be kids (oh, that’s what the right wingnuts keep saying…they should follow their own advice).
