Samantha Bee: Counting the Dark Sides of the Duggars

Politics • Views: 18,655

After that repulsive display of Republican racism in the Ketanji Brown Jackson hearings, in which they tried to paint her as “soft on child porn,” here’s a look back at someone who moved in the highest levels of Republican politics for decades, as he committed countless crimes of child abuse.

The Duggars used to represent wholesome family TV. Now, almost 20 years and a jail sentence later, it’s time we take a closer look at the Christian Patriarchy and Quiverfull movements that spawned the Duggars.

CL’d last thread:

re: #347 jaunte

Interesting pair of diaries I found over at Daily Kos:

1. Why the Russian Army Sucks
2. Why The Russian Army Still Sucks

If these pieces are in any way accurate, it would go a long way towards explaining the Russian military’s extraordinarily unimpressive performance in Ukraine.

TL;DR version: most forces in Putin’s Russia suck because they are designed that way: the real “force” is in the “state security” organizations: the “regular” Army/Navy are secondary, and are most-often used as scapegoats for systemic flaws (or setbacks, as presently).

HEY! I happen to like tater-tot casseroles.

My mother was a grade school cook for a while. She perfected tater-tot casseroles there and then divided the recipe by 200 and made it for us at home. Actually, quite a fond memory.

Which means that assuming Sinema doesn’t suddenly decide she Really Needs Attention (and I don’t think she’d break ranks on this one), Collins is now free to not be the deciding vote. And since we know she can only cosplay “courage” and “independence” when nothing’s actually at stake, she’ll probably end up being a meaningless yes vote, especially if Murkowski signals a yes vote first.

Here’s the thing: I don’t want Democrats to start screaming about every goddamn thing. I don’t want them to become Republicans. I do want them to make more noise about the things that are important, but what I really want is for people to just STOP FUCKING LISTENING to the screaming from the right, as if their unhinged gibbering is the same as the calm and rational messaging the left is putting out. It isn’t, but the media is so scared of appearing biased that they are forever treating the right wing far more seriously than they deserve.

As I said earlier, part of that is 1) we don’t have a partisan media machine the way they do, and our attempts to create one never took, for various reasons (partly that Dem base doesn’t move the needle based on particular media bubbles the same way GOP base does), and 2) even when Dems do shout about things (this came from the 1/6 committee, remember), and try to get camera time or article space, it’s immediately drowned out by GOP voices, not because they’re just that much louder or more prolific, but because the media on several levels just privileges their speech more by default. Even when a Dems are unified on a message, the media will rely on Republican voices to frame that message. And then all incentive goes to bashing Dems for not stopping Republicans rather than Republicans doing the shit in the first place.

Clearly, nothing went according to the way Putin envisioned it and looking at their increasing losses in men and materiel (not to mention sanctions starting to bite), the Russian elite are now trying to backpedal away from Putin - most likely reckoning that he’s going down for this sooner or later and they sure as hell don’t want to go down with him.

US Army veteran went to Ukraine, helped blow up Russian tanks

Footage of a US Army veteran from Connecticut, who joined the Ukrainian army to fight the Russian invasion, standing in front of the lines of still blazing Russian tanks went viral on the internet.

James Vasquez, 47, announced his plan to the public. To leave his family and business in Norwalk on February 24, when Russia invaded.

He finally arrived in Ukraine on March 15 - sharing his adventures on the road via a newly created Twitter account and detailing how he helped to “deactivate” large numbers of Russian tanks and kill and capture Russian troops.

re: #90 Belafon

thanks. As a former sailor, I hope they do more than just remove that CO from command.

In 1969 I (E4) got my commanding officer (O5) in the Navy shitcanned. I’m still amazed that I made it through that whole thing unscathed. The new commanding officer offered to let me go anywhere in the Navy I wanted. I did.

re: #34 Backwoods_Sleuth

If you read the story in the Canadian news, I started reading it and I though, Pffft, You Deserved It. But as I read it, it made me really sad. A very lonely man with no friends, no family, resentful that his only friend died of cancer during the pandemic and he couldn’t say goodbye because of hospital protocols/lockdowns. He was basically buying friends and wanted to feel like he belonged.

By the end, I honestly felt really bad for him.

So can I, but some people are born to be object lessons. It’s their contribution to the advancement of the species.

More concisely: Fuck his feelings.

There is a movie quality story hiding in that paragraph.
