I’m sure there are some of those, but I think there are a lot more who long for the days of King Coal, and want “American-made power” to be crap that we dig out of the ground and set on fire, because that is what would personally make them the most money. As opposed to investing in the future, which requires money and incurs risk.

Hell, I’m happy my replacement primer bulb for my lawnmower came in today. Went out for the first cut of the year this past weekend. Pulled the mower out of the shed. Filled the gas tank, went to primer it up and notice the cover was off the air filter. Primer bulb pokes out of the air filter cover and I see it is half chewed up by some critter, never did find the air filter. Cover was laying a couple feet in the shed from where I put the mower. It had claw marks (maybe teeth) on it. Took many pulls to get that mower started without priming it.
Ran around looking for replacement bulb, no place had the size I needed. Ended up on Amazon to get it. It looks to be right size. Will put it in when the snow stops :-)

Republican gerrymandering continues in Florida and voter suppression through GOP run states; our best option to combat that was this approach, which was really not particularly ethical, but as they say, you lose when you bring a knife to a gun fight. Well, this utterly corrupt DeSantis gift to FPL oligarchs makes the decision for me. I already have a grid-tied 7.6kw system (9.1kw worth of actual panels) on my roof presently. I already get shafted by my local provider Chelco where they only credit me wholesale price for my excess solar energy that I have to buy back at night for full price. So in reality, this legislation does not affect me that much.
But what this legislation does make crystal clear is that DeSantis is not looking out for anyone but his largest campaign donors and corruption buddies. What I am now going to do is start to double my solar system and take it to the next level with a separate off-grid battery system where my only grid electric charge will likely be the $30/month service fee. Battery backup systems are rapidly coming down in price with the latest LFP tech and even better tech is on the way. When will voters look up out of their little holes of hate and realize their own prejudices are being used against them in an effort to stab the little guy in favor of Republican big business?

Put it in the “seemed like a good idea at the time” column.
The few college kids I know are not happy about it, because they kept their loans low through work and taking jobs after college that forgave their debt (nursing). Not a good idea IMHO. The students should have to pay income tax on their debt forgiveness as well.

they want to instill in the blastocyst/zygote/embryo/fetus etc the superior power to compel the actually existing and born pregnant human into subjugation to it.
and have that power enforced by the state.

“When candidates for public office indulge in conspiracy theories like QAnon, it’s often with a wink and a nod,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
“But just weeks before Pennsylvania’s May 17 primary election, such ideas are being promoted in plain sight. And high-profile Republican candidates for statewide office are treating talk of a ‘global satanic blood cult’ like regular campaigning.”
and
“Teddy Daniels (R), a far-right Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, was removed from his home this week after his wife asked a court for emergency protections against abuse,” Rolling Stone reports.
“This is at least the third relationship in which Daniels has been accused in court documents of mistreating a female partner.”

For years, most here have been highly critical of Jack’s management of the site and his allowing people with power and white supremacists too much leeway in violating his TOS. But whatever his flaws, my memory is that his tweets were often more of the weird variety and never bullying or insulting. Elon certainly favors an alternative approach. It does look like Elon’s plans are to convert Twitter into a fully functioning Truth Social. The question is where will decent people flee and what about news organizations that use this platform to convey information to the public. There are no alternatives. This seems akin to the Nazi takeover of the German courts.
It might be amusing though, assuming that the Twitter staff is not bound by employment agreements, if they migrated to an alternative site and transformed it to the new global public marketplace of ideas.

Charles, did you ever watch Dredd with Karl Urban?
Great sci-fil film and does not go over the top with massive special effects everywhere.
Looks like the 90 howitzers the US is shipping to Ukraine are the top of the line M777. (As are about 10 more from Canada and Australia.) Which makes sense as I believe that the production lines are still open.
Supposedly about half the howitzers are already in Ukraine. I suspect that while a few may already be in the combat zone, it will likely be weeks before larger numbers are deployed to combat.
Iirc emplacement speed is about the same as its predecessor, the M198, at about 7 minutes. But displacement speed is about 4 minutes faster. (7 minutes versus 11 minutes). It is more automated. It also can use some of the newer ammunition types. And has the record for furthest operational shot, 36km. And it is a heck of a lot more accurate. Even at very long range.
What this means is that the Russians will have much harder time gathering up forces (‘massing’ them) for an attack.

Exactly. I know a good portion of my education was subsidized by the state and federal government, but the portion I had to pay, I did pay myself. Every dime of it. I still am totally fine with some or all student debt being cancelled.
I just wish that included in this argument was something to keep this from happening again. Just cancelling the debt will help people now and I’m for it, but we will be back in this same boat in a few years if there aren’t other changes made.

The cost of college has far outstripped inflation in other aspects of our lives. Public universities should be free or very minimally priced for in-state residents.
There is something to be said to attending community colleges for the first year or so to complete required core curriculum before specializing at a university. Unfortunately, that’s not always the best option for those with plans in math or the sciences, where the basic classes start in the first year, and community colleges do not provide the equivalent level of material.

Certainly beats investing directly in oligarchs and organized crime.
I’m kind of wonking out over how deep within the 50% kill distance the mean miss distance is. (Ie the average miss error is well within the 50% probability of kill distance.)
As a forward observer calling in artillery, I noticed that occasionally the Fire Direction Center would get my location confused with the target location. If I had been calling in M777’s rather than artillery developed for World War 2 (M114’s aka ‘The Pig’), I suspect that I would not be here now.
And yes, it is true that you never hear the one that gets you. The artillery shell is usually traveling faster than the speed of sound. If you are ‘lucky’ you hear the boom afterwards, though.
I had one friend who while a Forward Observer, lost his tent and most of his personal gear to a direct hit. Fortunately, he was smart and experienced enough to be in a bunker at the time.

I have been talking about this with a coworker at my defense contractor job. Defense costs more because of a few things: we have to pay more to get people to produce for defense, and we have to pay people real salaries in it to have people do their best, and we have to pay for oversight or we’ll pay for corruption.
Now, the second one should apply to every job, but in my experience defense workers are the last people to see that.

I don’t know about other states, but the vast majority of community college classes in California are 100% equivalent to first and second year classes at a California State University or University of California school.
In the San Diego area in the 90s and early 00s the only science-y major that was rough starting at a CC would have been Electrical Engineering because none of the schools here had the equivalent of the 200-level (1st & 2nd year) classes in an EE or ECE curriculum.

I attended community college for 2 years and then transferred to a tech school to get my bachelor’s in Math and Computer Science. But this was back in the ‘80’s.
That’s the way my kid went — two years and Associate’s degree from a good community college. Colorado system is supposed to guarantee that the credits are fully transferable to the four-year universities, and this particular CC worked closely with the University of Colorado and Colorado School of Mines to ensure the classes were comparable. Even had the choice of taking a couple of classes on the Mines campus nearby.
In regards to the post that started the discussion, my kid’s original hope/plan was to transfer to School of Mines. At least two of his community college profs recommended UC at Denver instead, said the Mines culture likely wouldn’t suit him. Single-minded engineering emphasis and struggling with diversity were mentioned; didn’t pass the ‘Kleenex box’ test. For him, the two years on a smaller campus worked well, and he had some great teachers. (Not to mention it was a whole lot cheaper, of course.)
Don’t know how he would have done at Mines — he got one falls semester at UCD before the COVID lockdowns sent everything off-kilter anyway.
