The Mueller She Wrote twitter account is arguing with people who are basically giving up on Biden for only forgiving $10K. So people have dug up the fact that her podcast received a PPP loan that was forgiven, and Biden forgave her student loans because she’s a disabled vet. I can definitely see the frustration at “only” $10K, but you get people posting stuff like what I replied to, and ugh:

Just to give some background on this tweet. Lee Strobel is a minister who teaches at Houston Baptist University. But he’s most famous for parlaying his backstory of “I was an atheist journalist who investigated The Facts and found Jesus” into a whole series of craptastic, poorly written and sourced apologetic books called “The Case for Christ | Faith | Creator | Easter | Christmas” and a half-dozen more.

Now that you know that, here’s the tweet and my response:

And, as it turns out, one of my Aussie buddies ALSO retweeted the deleted tweet.

My point? FUCKING CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM IS EVERYWHERE. And it SUCKS.

It was an accounting package - a very good one too - not a word processor that could run on almost everything. Even had an Apple II version IIRC.

Well, uhm, some of us (OK, it was me) got hung up on the Peach Tree Dish and, knowing that there are a LOT of streets in Atlanta named Peachtree and MTG is from Georgia, spent WAY more time than a normal person would trying to figure out how a Peachtree street fitted into whatever MTG’s rant was. And then I figured it out.

Don’t tell me jokes, people, they inevitably sail over my head and into the next county.

When I was a kid I saw Blue Cheer at the Diamond Head Crater Festival. Someone who worked at the show told me they rented every amplifier on the island of Oahu and somehow hooked them all up, probably by running cables between the input jacks. Even on the far side of the crater from the stage it was absolutely deafening, and really crappy sounding. I loved it.

I remember when this power plant was built.

MOSCOW, Ohio (WKRC) - The Zimmer Power Plant along the banks of the Ohio River in a small village in Washington Township will stop producing electricity Tuesday after more than 30 years in operation.

Zimmer was originally built as a nuclear plant in the late 1970s, but investigations by Local 12 News and others showed major concerns with the construction.

So, operators converted it to coal - the first project of its kind worldwide when it opened in the early 1990s.

The closure of the plant means that 83 jobs are going to be terminated and eliminated. Only one of those people lived here in Moscow, according to Mayor Tim Suter.

snip

The plant is owned by Texas-based Vistra, which obtained it as part of its merger with Dynegy in 2018.

Managers tell Local 12 they will “evaluate the Zimmer site for potential investments in renewables or grid-scale battery storage.”

Background:

The Russians instigated separatist movements in two non-Georgian groups to weaken Georgia. The Russians also deployed troops into both regions. In 2008 they attacked Georgia with the Ossetians. After the war the Ossetians ethnically cleansed Ossetia of Georgians. A significant number of the Russian troops in Ossetia as well as Ossetian paramilitaries have been sent to Ukraine over the past few months.

re: #75 Romantic Heretic

There are probably a few mg-34/42’s owned by Class III holders. (These permit owning of a registered fully automatic firearm.)

There are a few rifle ranges that rent them to people for use on the range. (At 10 rounds a second and $1 per round, firing time can get very expensive quickly. And profitable.)

Also some years ago, somebody bought up a lot of spare parts from Eastern Europe and was building and selling semi-automatic versions.

Plus, there may be demilitarized ‘replicas’ around as well.

Yes. There are two ways: a registered “transferable” machine gun subject to massive ATF regulations and very high cost(~$50,000). Or, much more likely, it’s a belt fed semi-automatic and considered an ugly rifle by ATF. Still probably about $2000. The FAL next to it is far more interesting to me.

But both Presidents Roosevelt had been governor of NY, and Teddy was NYC police commissioner. Does that count?

I’ve been reading translated commentary that is predicting these problems for the Russian empire.

I suspect that you are very correct.

All along the fringes of Russia are these small weak regions. Putin, and before him, the Soviets, have been aggravating any divisions in order to weaken them even further. Many of the societies are based upon ethnicity since the Soviets destroyed or corrupted alternative organizations.

By design the leadership in these areas has to rely upon the Russians to keep them in power. If Russia weakens, their power is threatened. And if a lot of their supporters are sent to a war where they get killed or discouraged, these guys could be toast.

Ossetia and Chechniya come to mind.

Also Transnistria, which is a tiny sliver in between western Ukraine and eastern Moldova. Apparently Transnistria ordered a mobilization of all adults, but apparently this failed, at least according to the Ukrainians.

“Transnistrians see that Russia, as always, will use them as cannon fodder — no one wants to become minced meat…” Bratchuk said.

“I think that the resignation of the government in Transnistria is due to the fact that this plan failed completely, i.e. the Russian overseers did not get the expected results.”

This apparently also led to the resignation of the Transistrian “government.”

Transnistria has 469,000 people as of 2018. Moldova has 2,618,000 as of 2020. I think the CIA Factbook is lumping them together (3,287,326 as of 2022).

yahoo.com

A recent report full of pictures by a Business Insider reporter from Transnistria and it’s worth taking a look at. Even though it’s an unrecognized breakaway republic, it is rather integrated with its neighbors. It provides electricity to Moldova, a lot of residents hold Moldovan and Romanian citizenship, thousands of Ukrainians fled there after the war started, and the European Union is funding the restoration of an Ottoman era fortress.

Excellent point!

The Soviets and then the Russians tried to play the “Russian speaker” card in a lot of Eastern Europe. For example, Trans-Nistra, Ukraine, the Baltic States. It generally worked out to reinforce the nationalists in power against the Russians. In the Baltic States, speaking the national language competence (Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian) is now required to maintain citizenship. I understand that the Russian speakers who still remain in Ukraine are supporting Ukraine. (Data is hard to come by.)

I wonder how much of an ethnic transfer of Russian speakers has occurred since 1990. And remember the driving out of ethnic Germans after WW2. And of course the destruction of the Jewish and Roma communities during the Holocaust, and even in the interwar years. (Between WW1 and WW2.)

Baseball was declared the “national past time” in the 1850s and officially began organizing in leagues in the 1890s. “Star-Spangled Banner” did not become the official national anthem until an act of Congress in 1931. The “tradition” of playing the anthem before ball games did not become a thing until WWII when a ballpark owner thought it was a good way to boost war-time morale and national pride.

I fired the FAL a few times back when I was in Sea Cadets, like 50 years ago. Nice firearm.

A few years ago I was talking to a Nam vet, served on the river patrol boats. He said he would rather have a squad of well trained men armed with M-14s than a company of men with modern assault rifles. I tend to agree with him.

Better in my opinion to get one to two shots into the target than spray down range and hope you hit something. Just my opinion though.

Oh I agree. I had a FAL in the past. Excellent rifle though I wish that it had been adopted in the proposed 7mm intermediate/NATO from Britian. One of the reasons I prefer my AK to the AR is that as an American Semi-auto only it falls into that same kind of thing. Aimed fire with a 7.62 bullet rather than spray and pray. People like to say that the AK isn’t as accurate but I’ve found that if you take the time to properly zero it, there is no practical difference.

M-14s a fine marksman’s rifle and had it been developed and adopted 10 years earlier, would have been fondly remembered by Korean War veterans who needed accurate firepower over the long distances of the peninsula. But instead it was introduced to be a jack-of-all-trades rifle at a time when Congress was pushing the DoD to cut costs (read: lower quality) and finally made it to the troops in time to fight in the jungles of Vietnam which are not known for having large spaces with unobstructed views.

Army Announces 2 New Rifles for Close-Combat Soldiers

The Army recently awarded a contract to manufacturer SIG Sauer for two new soldier weapons: the XM5 rifle and the XM250 automatic rifle. For soldiers involved in close-quarters combat, the XM5 will eventually replace the M4/M4A1 carbine rifle, while the XM250 will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon.

Additionally, both new rifles will use the new 6.8 mm common cartridge family of ammunition as well as a new fire control system.

“We should note that this is the first time … in 65 years [that] the Army will field a new weapon system of this nature: a rifle, an automatic rifle, a fire control system, and a new caliber family of ammunition,” Army Brig. Gen. Larry Q. Burris, the Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team director, said.

One issue is the more common issuing of body armor. It is also supposed to be more controllable in automatic fire than the M-14. And I understand that it will be issued in combat arms branch only at this point.

All this talk of hog shooting reminded me of a family story.

My father, a Brooklyn born Jewish boy served in the American Army during World War. After the war he stayed with the American Military Government of Occupied Germany. As an officer on the winning side, German protocol officially labeled him as the equivalent of their nobility.

He got invited to a boar shoot at a castle by one of the German govt officials he supervised.

The shooters were stationed by trees and cautioned that with all the brush they would have maybe one shot and then it was time to climb the tree. Mostly armed with sporterized K-98s. (My father said that the gunsmith charged him 2 cartons of cigarettes. And went with to select a K-98 from the piles of surrendered rifles.)

The local villagers were deployed as beaters for the shoot. They drove the boars to the shooters’ stations.

My father said that a boar came out of the brush running straight at him. He went to shoot and the boar apparently saw my father’s movement and swerved, just as my father shot. Neither my father nor the boar, nor any of the villagers were harmed in the process.

My father then went back to his job of taking visiting congressman and dignitaries to the local winemaking Schlösser to get them sloshed.

The “tradition” of playing the anthem before ball games did not become a thing until WWII when a ballpark owner thought it was a good way to boost war-time morale and national pride.

These assholes have an understanding of history as shallow as their gene pool.

Would be curious if any of them know the actual date that “In God We Trust” was put on US currency or “One Nation, Under God” was *added* to the Pledge of Allegience.

Suppression fire is a thing. But usually done as part of carrying out more complex maneuvers. It also requires that you have the ammo to do it. And your squad’s SAW/LMG is generally better at it than a bunch of assault rifles on automatic.

The place the automatic capability comes into play is close quarters and clearing buildings. Where you might want more rounds going downrange a little faster. (Wall/door penetration might also be a thing, but having a 7.62mm which penetrates better can be a mixed blessing.)

I’ve always thought the lesson of Vietnam was “A war fought ‘cheaply’ will end up costing more than you expected.”

A lesson that we had relearn not once but twice in the past two decades.

What was I think also pretty clear was that Vietnam was not going to remain partitioned, did not want to be partitioned, and the government of the North had the will and desire to make it happen. And had done a lot of the heavy lifting in that regard during WW2.

The USA/Allies stepped on themselves deciding that propping up the French going back into Vietnam to control it. Then again, the independence movements in SE Asia all got a big boost from WW2 since they saw the French and British get humiliated by the Japanese, spent time learning military and guerilla tactics fighting against (or with to a degree) the Japanese. And also got all that lofty rhetoric during the war about freedom from tyranny. So all the colonial masters stepped back in and immediately faced stout resistance.

And pretty much all of it went badly for the European powers over the next decade. Possible exception being Malaya.

That new 6.8 is going to have a lot of those issues.

I told someone in Arma 3 that my favored tactic for clearing small buildings was staying outside and having a M2 BMG. (The alternate approach for some one-room modular structures is to open the door, bounce a grenade off the back wall, and then close the door. Then duck.)

A few too many times of having an AI positioned inside a room with a very clear firing angle on the door and a poor angle to see them when you come in said door. And I don’t carry enough grenades to use one every room.

If 40 trained LEOs are afraid to go into a school because “they might get shot” then we’ve learned two things:

1) The “good guy with a gun” argument can be put to rest.

2) If that style of weapon is too powerful, then maybe civilians shouldn’t be owning them.

Not as uncommon as you might think in the northeast. When I was growing up, there were plenty of buildings in our area that didn’t have air conditioning (or had only moderate AC).

Used to be we were only guaranteed maybe a few weeks (often not consecutive) of hot hot weather in the summer. The remaining days were still warm, but could be managed without AC.

With the long winters up there most folks are more concerned with having a functioning furnace than a high level AC.

Of course, the affects of climate change are starting to shift things somewhat.

Looking forward to Marcy Wheeler’s and a couple of other legal commentators opinions.

Marcy Wheeler was absolutely scathing about the prosecution in this case.

She pointed out that the prosecution ignored many of the Judge’s rulings regarding admissibility of evidence.

She noted that witness (for the prosecution) opinions seemed to change to more favorable to the prosecution just before the trial. That lots of evidence was missing, mis-understood, mis-stated, or simply ignored.

I agree with you that the information may not creep into the awareness of the vast masses of humanity. And may not directly affect their actions. Case in point look at how many vote gqp.

What I like about twitter is that it _can_ provide access to some experienced and knowledgeable observers. The goal is for me to identify facts that may be important to me. But which I do not have the resources, or expertise, or even time and focus, to develop on my own.

In the case of Sussman, I was curious as to why the case was being tried and how much of it was political versus how much was reasonably criminal. The expert opinions that I have posted seem to indicate that the Durham investigation, originating for political reasons, indicted Sussman on, at best, marginal and questionable criminal charges. And that the jury, by their verdict, seems to agree.

This helps me make sense of a judicial process that is often quite opaque to me. I feel it important because a lot of the future of our way of governance seems tied up in legal process right now.

That’s really been Durham’s job from the start: Not to secure convictions, but to destroy the reputation of anybody he can in order to try to salvage the credibility of his former bosses. Dragging them through the mud while the media gleefully takes pictures is all that he was really appointed to do.

CBS and other major media have no shame to give since their job description now entails giving equal accordance and civility to “both sides” instead of seeking any sort of truth or regard for the basic logical fallacy undermining their entire ethic.

Our major media exists to simply exist and they don’t care about truth or logic. They are entirely happy to operate under the most leftist of Castros or the most right wing of Hitlers. And currently they are positing themselves to operate under a MAGA controlled United States in the near future.

This will just end up being yet another page in the “Big Book Of Crimes Hillary Got Away With,” the book that has grown larger than “War & Peace” because every investigation is “The one that will finally put her behind bars!!!!” until it fails to turn up anything or lead to a conviction at which time we get told that “everybody knew” that it was all rigged and she’d walk away scot-free because her power and influence is just so awesome that the only thing it can’t do is put her in the White House.

About the new quarters:

First, IGWT has appeared on coinage in the US since 1864. It didn’t show up on paper money until the 50s.

Second, the “new” obverse design isn’t new. It’s the original design that won the competition for the Washington quarter in 1931. But because the artist, Laura Gardin Fraser, was a woman, Treasury secretary Andrew Mellon vetoed the use of her design and replaced it with the runner up, the John Flanagan design that was in use from 1932 until 2021.

These assholes have an understanding of history as shallow as their gene pool.

Also note that until around 2009, the teams used to come out onto the field only after the National Anthem had played.

But the Armed forces wanted more patriotic spectacle and were also probably impressed by seeing the teams come out and stand for each other’s national anthems during international soccer matches, so they funded the NFL to have the teams come out for the SSB…

As the country braces for the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade, there is a push in Austin, Texas, to decriminalize abortions.

As things stand, the procedure can be performed in Texas legally up to six weeks into a pregnancy. But if Roe v. Wade is overturned, Texas is expected to have some of the strictest abortion laws in the nation, which include a felony charge.

Austin city leaders are proposing a new resolution that directs police to make criminal enforcement of abortions its lowest priority, and prevent city funds from being used to investigate abortions.

This shit’s been going on since ‘92 and the beginning of their obsession with proving the Clintons were crooks began at Mena Airport. Every time an investigation has turned up squat they’ve accused the agency(s) of being chock full of Clinton cronies/supporters, every criminal investigation that’s gone nowhere has led to assertions that the investigators are on the “Clinton payroll,” and every court case that’s ended in an acquittal has been met with screams that the jury are biased/paid by the Clintons. Yet every time the digging starts, they confidently predict that “this time” they have Bill and/or Hillary dead to rights and that the whole criminal empire’s about to come crumbling down.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — More than one million Michiganders were expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend and for those who did it by car, they paid dramatically more this year than last to fill up the tank.

According to AAA, the current average price for a gallon of gas in Michigan is $4.58.

That shatters the Memorial Day record high gas price of $4.11 set back in 2008.

While today’s average price is high, it appears prices may have plateaued, it’s only about a cent higher than last week.

While many drivers are struggling at the pump, some say it could be worse based on prices they have seen elsewhere.
