With a two-paragraph order Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito effectively butted into Pennsylvania’s messy GOP primary, potentially affecting the ongoing Senate race there.

The question in Pennsylvania is whether mail-in ballots without dates on their outside envelopes — ones that nonetheless were cast on time — must still be discarded as invalid.

In the Republican race to become Pennsylvania’s next senator, TV doctor Mehmet Oz has sought to exclude those ballots, while former hedge fund manager David McCormick has sought to have those ballots counted. That dispute is ongoing in state court as the race is being recounted.

The federal Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on May 22, in the case of a November 2021 county judicial race, that the missing date was “immaterial” and that “there is no basis on this record to refuse to count undated ballots” that had been set aside in that election.

Responding to an emergency application from a judicial candidate in that race, David Ritter, Alito paused the order Tuesday.

It was a real education trying to report those death threats to the local police, even though the guy making the threats was not kidding in the least, and tried to incite his crazy followers to do something. The cops basically said, “You’re on your own, pal.”

One of the cops I talked to said they’d try to send some extra patrols down my street from time to time. Yeah, right.

Lubbock is notorious for pedestrian deaths, not sure why but a lot of the accidents seem to involve people wandering into a main thoroughfare during off hours, ie, they are not expecting fast traffic on what appears to be an empty street. There is one intersection (27th street and Avenue Q) where there have been six pedestrian fatalities in the last 25 years. In one incident, a homeless woman and her dog were hit and killed in broad daylight. The driver ran but was arrested later. There was another such incident, a man and his dog both killed, just a week later on Loop 289.

Who’s this “they” you’re taking about? I don’t want you to pray for schools. I want you to do something realistic about people getting high powered military weapons and using them to kill people at schools, churches, grocery stores, and parties. Prayer is when you ask God to forgive you for not doing anything to protect children and hoping He won’t see your hypocrisy. Oh, and prayer is allowed in school. A teacher or principal can’t use it to force Jews to pray to a Christian God, Baptists to pray to the Catholic god, or all of you to pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Yeah, been there done that. I grew up in a household full of rifles and shotguns. Complicated story. Once had a loaded, ready to fire .22 long rifle pointed at my head at age 12 ready to kill me.

Anyway, when I was 17 my family hosted a young wife in distress escaping her abusive husband. This is back in the 80’s. We had a couple of shotguns loaded and ready. The abusive husband showed up on our street and my family called the police. He went away and a couple hours later the cops finally showed up. They noticed the shotguns by the door we explained the situation and they and plainly said “if you shoot him make sure you drag his body into your house.”

Lesson learned, they really couldn’t care less. Texas cops attitude really is “you’re on your own.” I guess a lot of them are only in it for the power trip.
