For the third year, Tiny Desk concerts team up with globalFEST for a thrilling online music festival — Tiny Desk meets globalFEST.

Bob Boilen | January 30, 2023
Hosted by Angélique Kidjo, the series echoes globalFEST’s live flagship event in spirit but is centered in the framework of the Tiny Desk concert series. This collaboration presents exclusive video performances from nine artists filmed in their respective homelands, on the road and in exile all over the world. There will be three nights of concerts, each featuring three bands, on consecutive nights beginning Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. ET. The globalFEST team wrote the following biographical information about each performer.

Justin Adams & Mauro Durante, UK / Italy
Justin Adams & Mauro Durante released an award-winning debut album, Still Moving, in 2021, moving from serene minimalism to wild catharsis. Adams (producer of Tinariwen’s breakout albums and guitarist with Robert Plant) plays with a post-punk guitar approach enriched by his passion for Arabic music and African trance blues, while Durante is a sought-after violinist and percussionist and leader of southern Italy’s acclaimed Canzionere Grecanico Salentino, who performed its iconic taranta and pizzica dance songs at globalFEST in 2012.

re: #303 Joe Bacon

Remember when Queen Elizabeth was on a State Visit with Ford and during the state Dinner the Captain and Tenille sang “Muskrat Love” and the Queen winced.

I couldn’t blame her!

I have always despised Ford for his pardon of Nixon but, up until now, I never knew he’d invited the Captain and Tenille to a state dinner for the Queen. It says a lot for the Bit’s sense of forbearing to not immediately declare war but it drops Ford a couple of notches in my eye.

‘Mr. President, It Was Muskrats:’ Toni Tennille on the Time She Sang ‘Muskrat Love’ for Queen Elizabeth - in the White House!

It may be the most infamous performance in White House history.

To celebrate the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, one of the most popular acts of the era - the Grammy-winning husband-and-wife duo Captain and Tennille - were invited to perform for President Ford, First Lady Betty Ford, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

But the performance didn’t go quite as planned.

The couple opted to perform their camp classic, “Muskrat Love,” after the First Lady personally requested another suggestive song.

“We had two great hits, ‘Love Will Keep us Together’ and ‘The Way I Want to Touch You,’ ” she recalls. “I thought, ‘I probably can’t do ‘The Way I Want to Touch You.’ It might be a little too intimate for the White House.’ But then when Mrs. Ford came in and said, ‘Are you going to do ‘The Way I Want to Touch You?’

“I said, ‘We weren’t planning to.’ She said, ‘Oh you must! It’s Gerry and my favorite song.’ I went, ‘Okay, we’ll do that.’ Then I said to Daryl, ‘We really should do ‘Muskrat Love,’ too.’ It was a huge hit and I thought everyone would get a kick out of it. I thought they seemed like a fun group!”

But with their synthesizer - which Daryl uses in the song to recreate the sound of love-making muskrats - speakers and keyboard set up in the East Room, the volume was high - and not everyone was pleased.

Kissinger in particular seemed miserable throughout the performance, says Tennille (she good-naturedly dedicated the song to him for years after), while the Queen simply nodded off.

Press them hard enough, and most Republican officials—even the ones with MAGA hats in their closets and Mar-a-Lago selfies in their Twitter avatar—will privately admit that Donald Trump has become a problem. He’s presided over three abysmal election cycles since he took office, he is more unstable than ever, and yet he returned to the campaign trail this past weekend, declaring that he is “angry” and determined to win the GOP presidential nomination again in 2024. Aside from his most blinkered loyalists, virtually everyone in the party agrees: It’s time to move on from Trump.

But ask them how they plan to do that, and the discussion quickly veers into the realm of hopeful hypotheticals…

We’re just waiting for him to die.

Speaking of AI, thought you might be interested in this Stable Diffusion comparison using each of the 1833 artists as part of the prompt: urania.ai (assuming you haven’t already seen this).

Also, speaking of AI, after ten minutes with ChatGPT, I couldn’t see much value-add to that over current robot chats. Lots of repetition of answers while trying to get clarification. Only real difference I saw between ChatGPT and experiences I’ve had with other chat robots is that ChatGPT apologizes a lot (and gets offended if you suggest it would find faster success in the porn industry).

Yeah, he was hot with The Cosby Show having just started the previous year and with Himself (parts of which was retooled for The Cosby Show) having been released the year before that.

Thing is, despite his carefully constructed “wholesome” image that he really started cultivating in earnest with Himself, I could totally see Cosby delivering Doc Brown’s “when this baby hits 88 MPH, you’re gonna see some serious shit” line; past that, ehhhhhhh. I’m just glad Lloyd got the part, because I hate to think about hating the BttF trilogy if Cosby was there, given what we know now.

If people are flying into windmills, they are bad pilots and they should very probably not be flying at all. A note: The reason why windmills have the flashing red lights on them is to indicate, “Here is a tall object. You are required by the FAA to maintain a 500 foot separation in space from this object.”

cmon the whole thing is asinine

no one is flying into windmills and they arent creating wind shear vortices that are causing ‘turbulence’

One company controls a wide swath of the concert industry, and lawmakers say music fans are paying the price. (NYT - Paywall)

By Ashley Wu

Good morning. One company controls a wide swath of the concert industry, and lawmakers say music fans are paying the price.

Ticketmaster has come under intense scrutiny since it botched the rollout of tickets to Taylor Swift’s tour late last year. Though the company has long been accused of anti-consumer practices, the backlash to the Swift debacle brought a new level of public attention. This week, the Senate held a hearing that explored whether Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, have an unfair monopoly over the live music industry.

I spoke with Ben Sisario, who covers the music industry for The Times, about how Ticketmaster become so dominant.

Ashley: How did we get from Taylor Swift tickets to a Senate hearing?

Ben: It was a phenomenal pop-culture moment. Taylor Swift, the biggest artist in the world, announced that she was going on tour for the first time in years. When there are millions of people trying to get a limited supply of tickets, there are going to be a lot of people left unhappy.

But Ticketmaster’s website also had a lot of problems. Ticketmaster said its system was overwhelmed by bots, which are used by scalpers to grab tickets ahead of real fans, and then sell those tickets back to them at inflated prices. When people logged on to purchase tickets, they were dumped into a digital queue with every other fan — and all the bots. Some fans said that even if they got through the line and added tickets to their shopping cart, by the time they went to check out, the tickets were gone.

It broke the internet. Huge numbers of people complained that they didn’t get a ticket and said that Ticketmaster failed to do its job. That caught the attention of politicians. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for Live Nation and Ticketmaster to be broken up, and Senator Amy Klobuchar announced a hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The complaints from fans pointed to a longstanding criticism that Ticketmaster lacks any real competition. How did the industry come to be dominated by one company?

Live Nation Entertainment as we know it is the combination of two companies: Live Nation, the events promoter — which hires artists and puts on shows — and Ticketmaster, the ticket seller. These are usually separate jobs in the live music business.

The whole world of concert promotion had been small-scale and regional until the late 1990s, when it was all rolled up and Live Nation became the biggest concert company ever. Ticketmaster had been around for a long time, but it had never been in the business of hiring artists to play shows. The two companies were already dominant in their respective industries, and in 2010, they merged.

Usually with mergers that big, the government has to ensure that the new company will protect consumer interests. Were officials worried about a monopoly at the time?

To approve the merger, the Justice Department required that the combined company agree to certain rules. One was that Ticketmaster wasn’t allowed to force venues to sign ticketing deals by threatening to deny them access to Live Nation tours. They couldn’t say, “If you don’t use Ticketmaster, you’re not getting X-Y-Z tours next year.”

But a few years ago, the Justice Department investigated and found that Ticketmaster had in fact done this a number of times.

And at the hearing this week, the C.E.O. of rival ticketing service SeatGeek testified that when they pitch their services, venues will be impressed with their proposal, but say that they’re worried about losing concerts if they drop Ticketmaster. Senator Klobuchar said that this is the definition of monopoly — that Live Nation doesn’t even need to exert pressure, and people just fall in line.

How do artists feel about this? Could they just sell their own tickets?

Nearly 30 years ago, Pearl Jam sued Ticketmaster, which the band said had a monopoly on concert tickets. They tried to book a tour without Ticketmaster, but it was a challenge for them to find venues to play outside the Ticketmaster ecosystem. They eventually abandoned the fight and came back to Ticketmaster.

For very large artists, it could be possible. Taylor Swift sells her own merch; maybe she could sell tickets too? But there is a status quo built into the marketplace for live music: An artist goes out and makes a deal with a promoter to put on a show, the promoter finds a venue for the show to happen, and the venue has a deal with a ticketing system for everyone who performs there. It’s not easy to change, especially when one big player controls multiple parts of it.

Back in 2018, we reported that Ticketmaster handles 80 of the top 100 U.S. venues. The company’s market share is a matter of debate, but it is still very high.

What might come after the Senate hearing?

It’s unclear. If the Justice Department does seek to break up the company, it would be a very big deal. Even though the senators were united in their displeasure about the power that Live Nation Entertainment has, I think it’s an uphill battle to change the system.

For now, those who argue that Live Nation and Ticketmaster are a monopoly say that the company’s position in the market is so strong that they can fail Taylor Swift and other huge artists like Bad Bunny, and still not be fired. And when the next superstar artist goes on tour, they will have virtually no choice but to work with Ticketmaster.

Ben Sisario has written for The Times since 1998. His first live concert was Henry Mancini sometime in the early 1980s, with his parents.

The more interesting bit to me is that he addresses the Court as “President Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America, in his individual capacity.” Does he have an official capacity? I suppose, if he was suing over something that occurred while he was in office, he could sue in his official capacity as President of the United States. That seems like a godawful mess legally, though.

SPOILERS for the show by way of the games’ plots:

People who are homophobes who haven’t played the DLC for the first game, or for the sequel are really going to flip their shit when it’s revealed Ellie is gay. In the trailers, there’s a quick shot of a young Black girl riding a carousel who most likely is Riley, which is taken directly from the first game’s DLC.

Trust me, the big freakout over the HBO series is coming, and it’s not going to be pleasant.

Principal orders librarian to take down Holocaust survivor’s famous quote

A Pennsylvania principal drew criticism last week after telling a Bucks County school librarian to take down posters with a famous quote by Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Peace Prize winning human rights activist, professor, and Holocaust survivor, just days before Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Central Bucks School District reportedly has ties to an organization that appears on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of anti-LGBTQ hate groups.

Despite being under investigation by the U.S. Dept. of Education’s Office of Civil Rights after an ACLU complaint, the Central Bucks School District earlier this month voted 6-3 to pass “a contentious policy that bans teachers from engaging in ‘advocacy activities’ and displaying inclusive symbols like Pride flags in their classrooms,” WHYY reported earlier this month.

Citing that new rule, known as Policy 321, the school principal told Central Bucks High School South librarian Matt Pecic to take down four posters that displayed Wiesel’s famous quote from his 1986 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, WHYY reports.

“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented,” Wiesel said.

Many countries have different rules between national and local elections. Often the rule is some variant of “legal residents get to vote in local elections”.

Here in the UK, citizens of Commonwealth countries such as Canada, Pakistan, India etc. who are resident here can vote in all elections, local, regional and national. Similarly citizens of the Republic of Ireland can also vote in all elections and they have an automatic right to reside in the UK without requiring a visa. Anyone who is legally resident (students, visa holders etc.) can vote in local elections and some regional elections regardless of their nationality.

il Duce De Sadist’s Stooges aren’t content with what they have imposed so far.

‘Is this 2023?’ Miami newspaper rips Florida GOP lawmakers for playing ‘fashion police’ with female employees

During the mid-2000s, some far-right culture warriors were raging against the ankle-length peasant skirts or gypsy skirts that were popular at the time. But in 2023, Republicans in the Florida House of Representatives are worried about skirts they think are too short rather than too long. And the Miami Herald’s editorial board, in a blistering editorial published on January 27, slams those Republicans for playing “fashion police” with female employees, wondering, “Is this 2023?”

“The Florida House, not content with creating an election police force, banning books in schools or regulating women’s bodies when it comes to pregnancy, has apparently taken on yet another enforcement role: fashion police,” the Miami Herald editorial board argues. “Women, say goodbye to your sleeveless tops ‘when members are in the building.’ The sight of your upper arms is too much for the hallowed halls of the (Florida State) Legislature to bear, it seems. And short skirts? We can’t believe you even asked.”

FWIW:
Hull was just talking cattle

MOSCOW - While a Moscow newspaper stood by its report that Bobby Hull voiced pro-Nazi sentiments, a translator who heard the interview said Thursday he may have been misunderstood or quoted out of context.

Svetlana Murashkina told the Canadian Press she was helping another reporter interview Hull when a Moscow Times reporter joined the informal session. She said the former NHL star, who has strongly denied the newspaper’s report, was asked about Hitler and other world leaders for a feature story on the 21st century.

“As far as I remember, the question was, “What do you think, is it possible that in the next century there will appear some rebel like Hitler and Stalin?’ something like this,” Murashkina said. “In fact Bobby Hull answered not directly. He made some speculations … just talking on the item. The word Nazis wasn’t mentioned at all.

“He said that, for example: “I raise cattle, I know something about genetics.’ He told that maybe … Hitler tried to make some perfect race but went too far, and that was not good,” Murashkina added.

When asked about Hitler, “He immediately transferred to the analogy about cows,” she said.

The English-language Moscow Times said in a statement,

“The story was a fair and accurate record of the interview” conducted by its correspondent last week.

Most suits, filed relatively recently, haven’t yet produced notable rulings. But a federal judge in California dismissed a proposed class-action lawsuit against Ms. Kardashian and other celebrities, saying the plaintiffs hadn’t sufficiently made allegations that celebrity promoters had conspired with others to pump up the value of digital tokens.

“The court acknowledges that this action raises legitimate concerns over celebrities’ ability to readily persuade millions of undiscerning followers to buy snake oil with unprecedented ease and reach,” U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald wrote. “But, while the law certainly places limits on those advertisers, it also expects investors to act reasonably before basing their bets on the zeitgeist of the moment.”

They see that it’s a con, but say investors should know better than to fall for a blatant con.

It gets blurry when the celebrity may have been conned themselves, and some people will call selling bored apes NFTs and celebrity tokens honest business transactions, even though it’s clear that they have no value beyond being hyped to idiots.

It’ll be interesting to see if anyone is held responsible for what seems to me to be 100% a grift.

According to 9To5Google(Opens in a new window), trying to confirm a virtual Google Voice number using 2FA results in an error message that says: “We cannot currently register this phone number.” And when users attempt re-add a Voice number to an account after removing it, Twitter says, “This phone number can’t be registered. Try signing in with email instead.”

Absolutely ridiculous. None of the websites that supply free SMS numbers work either.

re: #225 electrotek

Since when did it become impossible to sign up for a new Twitter account?! I keep getting asked to enter a phone number and none of my Google Voice numbers will work. And I am NOT going to use my personal phone number lest I get suspended right away and can’t remove it afterwards.

I don’t know if Google Voice numbers ever worked. I had to use a real phone number because mine didn’t long ago.

A real phone number is only $20 in the United States. Online services other than Google may also work. I never looked for them.

This colorful picture are the winds at 500mb, up were the jets fly highest and where jet-streams are evident. You can see the low sitting off of TJ - it was at the bight of California yesterday:

So far we’ve received less than a half inch of rain, thought.

It will be cold tomorrow night.

It seems like if you try to convert a regular bike to e-bike you end up with a crappy bike and a crappy e-bike.

No thanks, I’ll ride my Pedego instead.

Polyphia. I can appreciate the technical abilities on display in every song, but tbh their music does nothing for me.

Probably, but I’d be more comfortable leaving a cheap bike with one of these wheels chained up when out somewhere. You take the battery with you, and it doesn’t look at all interesting anymore. I wouldn’t let a $2,000+ eBike out of my sight.

I’m wondering if Fox is just trying to stay quiet in the hope that it will blow over for their viewers. Then Fox can bring them back.

Of course if the story poisons Schlapp, and his venues no longer are well attended, Fox would not care about the access Schlapp provides anyway. And then Schlapp would be unimportant to Fox.

Apparently Fox has not even covered the groping story at all.
