The reverse osmosis unit filters do need to be replaced. The home units the village bought need them changed annually. Culligan provided the new r/o units and they change and dispose of them under contract annually. Because the filters take out hazardous materials (arsenic and uranium), Culligan disposes of them through a hazmat service.

As for the small amount of wastewater produced by the r/o units, that is shunted into the sewage system.

Why is not buying a blue check “a political stand?” Maybe most people just think it’s dumb, and aren’t attached to that little blue check mark the way you thought they were? They’re calling it a “political stand” because the only people who seem willing to go along with this bullshit are hardcore MAGAts and their army of bot followers who have spent years screaming that it was “unfair” that they couldn’t get them but [insert “librul” celebrity] got one without an issue.

It’s the same reason they’re confronting any celebrity or journalist who is speaking publicly about their refusal to pay for a mark and screaming that they’re “elitist” because they won’t pony up $8 a month for a now worthless mark.

Please allow me to introduce you to Jonathan Allen Frost, a 24 year old who lives just a few miles from where I live. Jonathan is in a mess of trouble.A Katy man was sentenced to spend five years in federal prison Friday over his role in a white supremacist plot to attack U.S. power grids.

In 2019, Jonathan Allen Frost, 24, planned an attack and recruited, trained and equipped other men with a gun and a “suicide necklace” containing fentanyl as part of the plot, the Justice Department said.

Jonathan is not your typical trailer trash insurrectionist. Jonathan lives in a house on a golf course currently valued at between $1.5 - $1.8 million. I highly suspect it’s his parent’s house because two other people in their 60s are registered to vote at that address.

Under sentencing guidelines he could have gotten 15 years but he reached an agreement of five years, which means he’s white and lives in a ritzy house.

I think we should have let him know that he doesn’t have to mess with the power grid in Texas or fret over taking it down. The Governor does that for us in Texas. I do think that’s why his parents vote Republican.

Best analogy I could think of was that of blue checkmarks before Musk taking over being like an exclusive restaurant in town where entrance was by invitation only. Every MAGAt “celebrity” that’s tried to get in over the years but been denied has added to this rumor that the management are all hardcore “libruls” and you have to be in with them in order to get inside no matter how “famous” you are. The rumor only gained greater fervor for every MAGAt that did manage an invite being kicked out and their status revoked.

Then Musk took over and he promised them that he was gonna end all that, that under his management nobody would be kicked out ever and some of those who had been were invited back. Didn’t matter that he was doing all the shit that they’d accused the past management of, like kicking others out for their views rather than their behavior or criticizing his management, the place was now hailed as a mecca of “freedom” for all. But you still could only get in with an invite and Musk promised to change that, not only ending the old system but making entry as simple as paying a $20 door charge.

Well the day came, the old system was declared “over” and all the sweaty gloryhounds who’d believed for years that they were being denied entry to a place that was rightfully theirs crowded the door with money in hand…only the place was empty of everybody but them. All the celebrities that they’d thought they’d be rubbing shoulders with had left, some of them in a very noisy manner on their way out the door, and management was so desperate to act like it wasn’t all a joke that they’d even put a few name placards out of people who couldn’t attend on account of being dead. Hell, management has even gone back on their word, giving out invitations to celebrities who made noise about not wanting to be there anymore just to give illusion that the place is still desirable to more than just the sort of assholes that used to frequent the local dive bars and fast food chains.

So now the once exclusive club is a lot emptier, the clientele shifted from famous celebrities to belching asshats, and management has allowed things to go to shit because the people willing to pay entry are also willing to put up with his bullshit. But what hasn’t changed is the belief of all that the legacy members of the club were “elitists” and “libruls,” it’s just now a belief that you’re both if you refuse to pay to enter a club that was invite-only because you’d actually done more to get in the door than pay $20.

After the national publicity of some idiot shooting up a delivery driver’s car, the state attorney’s office finally released a statement.

According to the report - “Police closed the case without consulting the state attorney’s office.”

“Broward County State Attorney Harold Pryor issued a statement Sunday saying police investigators never contacted his office about the April 15 shooting in Southwest Ranches that put at least two bullets into the car driven by 19-year-old Waldes Thomas Jr., who was with his 18-year-old girlfriend, Diamond Darville.”

I’m not surprised. A lot of very big businesses, like Amazon, and the USPS depend upon delivery drivers. Shooting them would cost these companies money. That’s bad. Apparently the drivers themselves… Bummer, but, apparently they’re considered expendable.

The next question will be to see what happens to the shooter. Whether it is quietly dropped , or some sort of action is actually taken. It being Florida, and the victim being Afro-American, that’s an open question.

Fun fact: the counties Biden won account for 70% of the GDP of the US. The counties that went for Trump are the biggest drain on the economy and tout themselves as being rugged individualists while practicing what amounts to socialism.

If we were to truly “run America like a business” we would sell off those 30% of counties as “underperforming assets”.

These are the sort of idiots who think being a cop is one of the most dangerous jobs in America when it rarely makes it into top 10 list of dangerous professions and never in top 5s. Or think that cops are constantly in danger of being shot which is why they have to treat every person they stop as an armed suspect, meanwhile the leading cause of death for cops is disease.

Police nonetheless have to live with that fear, especially in certain areas. The main issue I have is the fallacious notion that more cops = better police protection.

They neglect the factor of training and integrity. Police get around 600 hours of training in the USA, double that in Canada, double that again in the UK and double that again in Germany.

Odd when you see that the number of police hootings per capita is nearly an inverse of that

That’s really another major element to all this, the fantasy so many MAGAts engaged in that the value of checkmarks lay not in the ability for even non-users to know that those with marks had been verified and the real McCoy, but instead had reduced it in their minds to the level of a status symbol that they were being denied for purely arbitrary reasons. Hence why they so readily believed in their BS about how all those with legacy marks would scramble to fork over $8 when Musk switched off their marks on 4/20. And why they’re so pissed that their confident predictions failed to come true and now they look like utter morons for paying money just to get something they previously swore up and down had no value.

Driven by the fear of hyperinflation of the currency. They can use the few historic examples (Continental dollars, Confederate dollars, Zimbabwe dollars - this seems like a dollar problem - Hungarian Pengó, &c) to say “see, fiat currencies are bad! Buy gold, silver, cryptocurrency!”

Gold, silver, and cryptocurrency are also fiat currencies. They only have value because we confer value on them. At least gold and silver have uses in industry and art; cryptocurrency is literally digital 1s and 0s.

Gold and Silver also have the advantage of relative rarity, density, malleability and durability.

With gold and silver, you can use a touchstone to (sort of) make sure you’re not getting ripped off as well, which is a big thing.

But all of them are inherently deflationary in a growing economy. Bitcoin was designed with a firm upper limit of bitcoins, which would shrink over time through losses that couldn’t be recovered. Mining is limited as well, and the supply of gold-backed money would be limited not by need but by whatever a few companies managed to dig out of the ground this year in Canada, Russia, South Africa, and Australia.

Deflation sounds great to goldbugs and such, but it just locks up the entire monetary system. There’s less than zero incentive to spend or invest if your currency just gets more valuable if you sit on it doing nothing. So of course bitcoin failed as a currency: that’s what everyone is doing with it, and it therefore has no purpose except to be traded to a bigger idiot who will end up holding the bag when nobody cares about it anymore.

TL;DR, an enterprising software engineer has come up with a way to grift from conservatives with an app which warns you when a company has “gone woke.” You can sign up for free, by handing over your personal information like telephone and E-mail. Think one of my favorite bits of trivia about Fallout: New Vegas is how there’s three different standards for barter by the time the Courier arrives on the scene.

The NCR had gold dollars as their currency until just before the game when the Brotherhood bombed their gold depository and rendered it all radioactive, forcing them to adopt a fiat currency of paper dollars that are (in theory) backed by the nation’s brahmin herds. It’s not truly worthless, but it is the least valuable of the three in circulation.

Then there’s Caesar’s Legions with their silver and gold coins, which are more valuable than NCR dollars largely because the only ways to get them (at least in-game) are either to work for the Legion, kill Legion soldiers, or find small amounts when scavenging. Plus they have a secondary use as material for making coin shot rounds.

And then there’s the currency in the middle, the trusty bottlecaps that have returned to their place in the economy because they’re backed by water which isn’t all controlled by either side but finding clean sources of it still requires equipment set-ups that are hard to build and maintain. Caps are basically the base currency, with the value of dollars and coins translating as how many caps they’re worth at one time or another.

Monetary systems for online games are a pain for the system administrators to deal with — inflation is one major hassle. They print money, just like governments do (You’ve killed the dragon! Here’s 50,000 gold!) but that devalues existing holdings by other players. There’s also the problem of game currency being bought and sold in the real world for real (fiat) money as part of the pay-to-play strategy.

A friend of mine wrote a book that kicked off with a “heist” at an online game company. The Russian Ruble was actually two (or even three) currencies all with the same name and nominal value.

First, the cash Rubles that people had in their pay packets and bank accounts. These could only be spent on goods and services available in state stores, agencies or state-approved markets. They were not convertible.

Then there were the non-currency rubles: these were used by state-owned companies for bookkeeping purposes to keep track of transactions with other state-owned firms. These could not be converted into cash rubles except to a limited extent (an amount necessary to cover daily expenses)

Neither of these Rubles could be converted into foreign currency without a license from the government to convert a specific amount when travelling abroad (on official business) or when purchasing foreign goods (with approval of the Ministry in charge)

So when the USSR collapsed, all those goofy non-currency Rubles got dumped in together with the existing cash Rubles with no restrictions on exchange, and the value went from one Ruble costing $1.35 (official exchange rate) to one dollar costing over 700 Rubles over the course of a few years (at which point they knocked off two zeroes and reset it to 7 Rubles per dollar. It is currently at 81 Rubles per dollar, but only because it is no longer freely convertible)

Cryptocurrency is based on a decision to trust an anonymous group of server operators to maintain the value and stability of a currency over entrusting that task to elected governments.

Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme, designed to benefit the early adopters at the expense of people who are late to the game. While you’re correct in that its design makes it resistant to manipulation, it’s just as much a scam as the other cryptocurrencies. It wasn’t until after Bitcoin was out in the world that the techbros realized they could simplify their scams by making unstable coins that they could mint at will and rubes would buy just to be “hip.”

Not a Ponzi in the classical Ponzi sense. It’s something else. I think that it will likely crash and burn. It can be useful as a medium of exchange in places that don’t have a robust banking system, or for sending money to places not serviced by PayPal and such. In a Ponzi scheme, the people on top get paid from deposits/investments made by people who come in later, not from returns of the business. That’s not what’s happening with Bitcoin. It’s more analogous to a stock that doesn’t pay dividends or to land ownership. Unless you consider those Ponzi schemes. Unlike an IPO/ICO, Bitcoin didn’t have a pre-mint.

Not in the strict sense, but in the generic sense of a system that is designed to benefit the guy(s) at the top at the expense of the people who come behind. I think I read somewhere that like >50% of Bitcoin are held by a very small number of people, all original investors/miners. The way Bitcoin is structured makes it more difficult to generate new coins as time goes on (the anti-inflationary/anti-manipulation measure you mentioned), which means that the early adopters have mined most of the Bitcoin that will ever exist.

Well, the original million or so Bitcoin that Satoshi mined, haven’t been touched in over a decade. The guy is either dead or superhumanly disciplined. Bitcoin was open from the beginning. A buddy sent me a copy of the white paper back in the 2008 timeframe. I remember the slashdot.com article when it hit 1 dollar. There was nothing preventing anyone with a computer from mining Bitcoin. In the early days, you didn’t even need a GPU, nevermind custom ASICs. I’ve never gotten into it, and I don’t have any FOMO or regrets about it. I always thought that the use cases in the first world were convoluted aside from edge cases. I certainly don’t think that it’s a good use of electricity or computing power.
The concentration of ownership is no different than the concentration of ownership of many corporations, etc. The reality is that many of those who invested early sold at 5x or 10x. I certainly would have done so had I bothered to throw any money at it. It required a religious conviction to hold/hodl from the early days to now. And just like any other religion, it doesn’t make sense to me. But unlike other crypto, Bitcoin doesn’t have any high priests as such.

They won’t be reusing that launch pad any time soon.

Shocking videos posted online show Elon Musk’s Starship rocket spraying debris all over the southern Texas coast as it powered off the launchpad.

The massive 395-foot rocket powered into the air from sunny Boca Chica, Texas Thursday morning, but burst into flames just four minutes after takeoff.

The explosion sent debris flying at thousands of miles an hour, damaging a car parked miles away and sending a dust cloud over the Gulf of Mexico on an otherwise sunny day.
Footage from thousands of feet away shows the dust cloud slowly engulfing the area, sending debris flying and sending palm trees swaying in the heavy winds before it ultimately starts to dissipate.

Pictures also showed the colossal crater and wrecked launch pad left in the rocket’s wake.

The Federal Aviation Administration has now grounded all of SpaceX’s Starship rockets as it investigates the failed launch.

Footings are seriously undermined, I would think they would have to start new again.

By contrast, you’re not allowed to view boobs, try any recreational drugs, make medical decisions, or even vote until you’re 25 or older because “you’re not mature enough.”

Crime rates surging?

OMG. What are we ever to do? What caused it?

Where are crime rates surging? Why are they surging?

Well, let’s dig deeper, shall we?

We can start at the top, with the right wing extremists on the SCOTUS eviscerating a 100+ year old gun law in NYS that makes it easier to sell and obtain guns, and undermined gun regulation and requirements to register firearms or possess them in certain places.

NYS has had one of the lowest per capita gun death rates in the nation. States with lax gun laws have the highest gun death rates. That has been the case for years.

Lax gun law states have relaxed their already lax gun laws to make it even easier to get guns, and gun death rates and mass shootings have soared - everywhere.

Iron pipelines mean that someone in NYC or Chicago can go to nearby lax gun law states to get the guns used in violent crimes or suicides. We are only as safe as the least restrictive gun law states.

Bail laws didn’t cause that.

This is the work of the NRA and GOP to make it even easier to commit crimes. These same GOPers want to underfund and undermine gun background checks. They want to make it even easier to get assault rifles and other weapons designed with express intent to murder mass numbers of people in shortest amount of time.

That’s the Zardoz death wish vision they seek.

Crime rates have risen in many states and places over the past two years, but risen higher in GOP states. They focus on NYC or Chicago because they have kept good stats going back years, and it’s easy to point to numbers, but per capita figures show it’s still safer to live in NYC than Columbus OH. It’s safer to live in NYC than many GOP controlled cities.

But when media outlets fixate on crime, it’s because it is lazy and easy to do for journalists because the police departments hand out their copy and use it verbatim, even though investigations usually tell a different story, especially when police involved shootings occur.

Honestly, I don’t feel sorry for him. Karma for every MAGA Nazi.

Speaking to “60 Minutes” on Sunday, Epps, a former Marine and Oath Keeper, explained he is in hiding, because his fellow MAGA supporters are now sending death threats. He and his wife were forced to sell their home and go on the run.

[…]

“It was a sloppy election. And then to top that off you have talking heads reporting that there’s problems with the voting machines and different things like that. The election’s stolen. So yeah, we had concerns. I wanted to be there. I wanted to witness this with my own eyes,” said Epps.

He and his 36-year-old son went to Washington, D.C., and ran into problems starting on Jan. 5. There were disagreements among those at a pro-Trump rally. He tried to take charge.

“I’m gonna put it out there I’m probably gonna go to jail for this. Tomorrow, we need to go into the Capitol! Into the Capitol!” he said to the crowd.

The poor police officer who turned up to the Secret Underground Bunker (used for proofing against cyber-attacks) where the company kept their servers didn’t understand that this “Monopoly money” was worth anything at all but then when it was explained to her that the real-world exchange value of the stolen intangible assets was in the millions that changed things.

It’s one reason the on-line games generally have whole lines of stuff to buy that is decorative without having any real in-game effect. It’s designed as a way to get currency out of the game economy without affecting the power balance of the game. Plus bonus IRL $$$ if people are paying real-world currency for the game currency in order to buy them. (Which could well be tapping into the desire of some people to be “completists” and have at least one copy of everything. Which can also applies to games that have achievements or some other grouping of things to do or have. I edge into this behavior at times.)

A proposed plan for the fiscal 2024 budget from the Department of Transportation, which includes spending $20 million on female crash dummies, received praise from the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.

During an appearance by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) praised Buttigieg’s proposal for the new crash test dummies. She said the secretary plans to make “important investments to address the road safety crisis.”
DeLauro described the money for the new crash dummies as “critical funding,” according to footage obtained from Yeshiva World News.

“This will start to fight the gender inequity among vehicle safety and crash victims,” said DeLauro.

re: #81 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I heard a story about ho Van Cliburn won a Soviet-era classical piano competition and received his prize of 10,000 which he was not allowed to take out of the country (all Soviets citizens were forbidden to do so as well without a license)

So he donated the sum to the Russian Orthodox church

Not being able to get money out of a country is more than a Russian thing.

A number of record albums were made by people in places like Jamaica (IIRC) since they had funds stranded there. My brother had money stranded in Malaysia after his father-in-law died and they no longer needed the one house there. Those funds to a large degree stayed there for use whenever my sister-in-law went back to Malaysia since getting the money out was going to be problematic. (Malaysia, of course, was quite happy to let you bring money in, like the initial purchase of said house.)

I suspect that American gun activists will also be gluing their AR-15s to their hands if Congress ever passes any bans or restrictions on them.

(talk about sticking to your guns)

I’d be happy with that. Then they can starve themselves or otherwise find out how many things in life are difficult to do one-handed, or no-handed if they are true idiots.

Every MMO starts out by swearing up and down that everything in the in-game shop is “cosmetic” and you can enjoy the game without buying anything from there. They’ll also sucker you in by telling you that it’s entirely possible to farm for shop currency in the game and will even given you a small amount at the beginning because “first hit’s always free.” But eventually they’ll reach that point where either paid subscriptions are not bringing in enough revenue or not enough people are paying real money to buy cosmetic items in the shop, and that’s when they’ll start offering things like XP bonuses or limited-time boosts, before they just break down and start stocking the best items in the shop.

And every time they do, it will be the same excuse: “You don’t have to buy stuff from the store to enjoy the game.” Which is true…if you enjoy endless grinding for gear that is never as good as the guy with disposable income bought less than an hour into his first day of playtime.

Uh-oh, there’s trouble at Chez Fish. The bird feeder has developed a bit of a following. In addition to the typical sparrows and chickadees, there is a pair of cardinals, the occasional blue jay, and the previously mentioned grackle. Except what was just one grackle has now turned into no less than four; and they are, uhh, “aggressive” about it. A fight broke out a few minutes ago as two males postured at each other over their unwanted presence at the bird feeder. I didn’t get to see how that ended, as they took off in separate directions.

Your feeder is a valuable piece of territory to claim for nesting season.

If you have multiple cardinals you’ll see pretty soon that the males (at least) have a hierarchy in terms of the order of who gets to eat. The females get to cut the line. And the males will chase off other birds - though the chickadees and nut hatches will fly in to grab a seed anyways.

Right now, it’s just the one male/female pair that I’ve seen. I’m sure any other cardinals in the area will get the idea to stop by in due time. The real question is: How long before the hawk who patrols the neighborhood gets the memo that there is a place where his favorite snacks gather to eat and rest?

Gold and Silver also have the advantage of relative rarity, density, malleability and durability.

And don’t forget the collapse of the Soviet/Russian Ruble in 1992-93. But again, there were political and economic reasons for these collapses that could just as well apply to to any cryptocurrency.

And gold and silver have been used as currency for millennia. So they have the support of history. They also have physical existence — unlike crypto (and most real currencies in the modern world).

Trial to begin in 2018 killing of 11 at Pittsburgh synagogue

PITTSBURGH —
Jury selection will begin Monday in the federal death penalty trial of a truck driver accused of shooting to death 11 Jewish worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue in the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history.

Robert G. Bowers, who is from the Pittsburgh suburb of Baldwin, faces 63 counts in the Oct. 27, 2018, attack at the Tree of Life synagogue while members of three Jewish congregations were holding Sabbath activities in the building. The charges include 11 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religion resulting in death and 11 counts of hate crimes resulting in death.

I’d love to keep a competent Democrat as governor in PA for an extended period. Or at least until the Democrats build a more solid working majority in at least half the legislature - in this case simply to limit the amount of screwball bills the majority GOP legislatures are tossing out right now.

Pity the flip did not occur two year earlier since then there could have been a solid drive to un-gerrymander the representative districts. (The various lawsuits and court cases have helped with that in the past decade in any case. Though I expect that the Calvinball Court *would* get involved if another case regarding PA’s districts got before them.)

He’s a good governor, and I don’t know that I want to ruin him by sending him to Washington to fight dirty against the national GOP, who are quite a bit nastier than our local home-grown idiots.

You *pay* your cover

And worse, all those cool people don’t even come here anymore

Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.

Early 20s are peak brain performance years by many measures. All downhill from there. Maybe we shouldn’t let those over 30 make any important decisions as well, since they’re clearly over the hill mentally.

Yeah, it’s the older generations who have fixated on Faux, OANN, Newsmax, etc., as representing their “traditional American values.” The younger generations have learned that this phrase is code for “religious repression,” and want nothing to do with it. The “brainwashing” has largely been along the lines of insulating these older people from the reality of the world, presenting only comforting thoughts that agree with their preconceived notions, and reinforcing their delusions.

While there hasn’t really been anything redeeming coming out from the rabid right in a while, it’s a good reminder not to fall into the same trap of only listening to things that reinforce my preconceived notions. I think my plants are staying indoors for a few more days. I see overnight lows projected here around 30 for the next few days. And I just saw a snow flurry outside.

The catnip could probably go outside and it’d handle this, though it might lose some greenery since it wintered indoors by growing more. (It had a die-off over Christmas since I think my cat-sitter forgot to water it.) The other plants are much less cold tolerant and the cayenne pepper plants already look awful in part because the cat keeps chewing the leaves off.

Yes, it does quite well during a winter if it doesn’t outright freeze. I had one by my house nestled right up against the wall. During the winter it was small, but very densely grown and remained green. Spring arrived, and with its head start it was about 3’ tall and flowering by June. Massively outperformed my catnip in the nearby planters.

The current plant I suspect is close to root-bound in it’s 10” pot. I don’t have plans on repotting it into anything larger.

There are a number of state and federal officials who have made their mark nationally.

Off-hand I can think of:

Gov. Gavin Newsom (Calif.)
Gov. JB Pritzker (Ill.)
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (Mich.)
Gov. Katie Hobbs (Ariz.)
Gov. Jay Inslee (Wash.)

Sen. Raphael Warnock (Ga.)
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.)
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (Ill.)
Rep. Katie Porter (Calif.)
Rep. Eric Swalwell (Calif.)

Moving up the ladder from lower offices, if you know out-of-state legislators in state or local office they’re already making a mark in wider politics.

Rep. Justin Pearson (Tenn.)
Rep. Justin Jones (Tenn.)
Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh (Nebr.)
Sen. Megan Hunt (Nebr.)
Del. Stacey Plaskett (USVI)
Me (lol)

Just saw that myself.

FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor.

Mr. Carlson’s last program was Friday April 21st. Fox News Tonight will air live at 8 PM/ET starting this evening as an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.

Tucker Carlson out at Fox News - effective immediately

Fox News has agreed to part ways with top-rated prime time host Tucker Carlson.

The decision is effective immediately, according to multiple sources.

“We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” the network said in a statement.

He was able to screw up all their viewers and misinform them for years. He weaponized an audience with nonstop misinformation and agitprop. He was furthering the Fox goal and model, right up to the moment Fox realized he became a liability.

Fox realized that they can make Tucker go away with just more money, and the solution is hike carriage rates even further for cable providers to carry them, regardless of whether anyone wants to watch them or not. They don’t need ad revenue. They have a dedicated revenue stream.

My guess is the eye-watering amount that the network had to agree to pay Dominion last week led to a general furor in the boardroom and the demands for immediate “changes” in the network line-up. Particularly because Smartmatic had indicated they have no intention of doing the same and they fully intend to capitalize on the very same shitstorm that scared the network into its settlement with Dominion.

I’m quite impressed with Kamala Harris. Vice-President is normally a near-invisible position, yet the Vice-President has been all over the country and the world promoting the United States abroad and Democratic positions here.

There are a number of state and federal officials who have made their mark nationally.

Off-hand I can think of:

Gov. Gavin Newsom (Calif.)
Gov. JB Pritzker (Ill.)
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (Mich.)
Gov. Katie Hobbs (Ariz.)
Gov. Jay Inslee (Wash.)

Sen. Raphael Warnock (Ga.)
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.)
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (Ill.)
Rep. Katie Porter (Calif.)
Rep. Eric Swalwell (Calif.)

Moving up the ladder from lower offices, if you know out-of-state legislators in state or local office they’re already making a mark in wider politics.

Rep. Justin Pearson (Tenn.)
Rep. Justin Jones (Tenn.)
Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh (Nebr.)
Sen. Megan Hunt (Nebr.)
Del. Stacey Plaskett (USVI)
Me (lol)

Sen. Ron Wyden (Ore.)

Not for nothing, but if you are going to run for president charisma is actually important, and Ron ain’t got it. IMO

And he’s not running. I am for him anyway. Brains and heart should count more than charisma. However, this is the USA.

Isn’t Vivek Ramaswamy one of the hardcore election denialists right now? What do you want to bet the execs told him to tread lightly around the election stuff in that interview “or else,” and Tucker did Tucker things and got his dander up, four-letter words were exchanged, followed by a “letter of resignation?”

My bet is that Fox had a “letter of resignation” on file for a few years now. And just finally decided to accept and activate it.

TUCKER GOT SACKED!!!

I don’t normally celebrate people losing their jobs but these sh!tbaskets that fox has let go, especially the Swanson guy, deserved to be fired and never work again. They are all menaces to society.

That being said, I’m sure all of them will end up gainfully employed at some other sh!t site or network sooner rather than later. Will CNN hire them for balance? Will it be CBS? 🤮

Edit: is this part of the settlement? Unofficial of course. Will fox become a real news source?

Was thinking the same thing. Maybe there was a handshake agreement along those lines.

Highly unlikely. It is up to the parties to disclose, or not, the terms of the settlement, as appropriate; but there are no “handshake agreements” in these kinds of disputes. “Put it on paper or it never happened” is the name of the game. Also, I don’t believe that a legally binding settlement between two parties can materially impact a third party, such as termination of employment of an employee based on a legal settlement between the employer and another party. I could be wrong about that, however.

It’s like I said, the general script is they get sent to a farm to play and be happy before Farmer John takes them behind the shed. If he didn’t even get that, then it’s pretty clear they punched his ticket and made clear on his way out the door that if he violated his NDA then there would be hell to pay.

Yeah, this was very abrupt. Like jaunte’s #267 pointed out, Tucker had an interview ready to go and it was being promoted by FNC.

This is the equivalent of a drumhead trial and summary execution.

To give an idea of how out of the ordinary this is, the network had to settle five suits against O’Reilly and lose pretty much all his advertisers before they sent him off on “vacation” and announced days later that he wouldn’t be back.

Fucker signed off on Friday, was scheduled to be back on Monday, and by lunchtime the same day he was out on his ass.

He did something or said something in the last 48 hours that finally pissed off the wrong person at the wrong time.

Meanwhile, CNN said they had “parted ways,” according to a statement.

“Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years,” the network told the New York Times. “We wish him well and will be cheering him on in his future endeavors.”

The Rumor mill was that Pirro and Bartiromo were on the chopping block; this is a much bigger scalp! And I bet tonight you won’t here a peep about Carlson on any Fox News program, as though he had never existed at all.

All markets are currently down including many top movers: ATT is down 3.5%, Tesla 2.6%, United and Delta both down, etc.

BUT, Ford and GM are up! Amen to Detroit!

No shit that Tucker is a much bigger scalp. Personally, I would’ve considered him un-fireable, at least until a couple hours ago.

Yeah, I think it’s a pretty good guess that he was told to cool it for a bit, he talked back thinking that they wouldn’t fire them, and they quickly made clear to him how wrong he was.

Today at SCOTUS:

Justices add two cases on liability of officials who block critics on social media

The Supreme Court on Monday morning agreed to weigh in on a question arising out of the widespread use of social media - specifically, whether public officials are acting as government officials, and therefore can violate the First Amendment, when they block people on their personal social media accounts that they use to communicate with the public. The announcement came as part of a list of orders released from the justices’ private conference last week, which also included the denial of several high-profile petitions for review filed by energy companies in lawsuits seeking to hold them responsible for their role in climate change.

The social-media question came to the court in two different lawsuits. One was filed against Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff and T.J. Zane, two members of a school board in southern California who used Facebook and Twitter to communicate with the public. After O’Connor-Ratcliff and Zane blocked Christopher and Kimberly Garnier, two parents who criticized them, the Garniers went to federal court, arguing that the school board members violated their First Amendment rights by blocking them.

The lower courts agreed. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled that the board members’ blocking of the Garniers constitutes government action, so that the board members violated First Amendment when they blocked the parents.

O’Connor-Ratcliff and Zane came to the Supreme Court last fall, asking the justices to weigh in. They pointed to a similar case, a lawsuit filed against James Freed, the city manager of Port Huron, Michigan, in which they said the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit had reached a different result - a situation in which the Supreme Court is likely to intervene. In that case, Kevin Lindke, a resident of the city, didn’t approve of Freed’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and left critical comments on Freed’s Facebook page. When Freed eventually blocked him, Lindke went to court, where - like the Garniers - he argued that Freed’s actions violated the First Amendment. But the 6th Circuit disagreed. It ruled that because Freed did not operate his Facebook page as part of his duties as the city manager, blocking Lindke did not violate the First Amendment.

Lindke also appealed to the Supreme Court, which on Monday agreed to take up both cases. The justices are likely to hear oral arguments in the fall, with a decision to follow sometime next year.

Over the last 20 years, the right has de-legitimized the Bushes, the military, the FBI, corporate America, mainstream Protestantism (what’s left of it), and various other traditional pillars of American conservatism. Now, the right’s prophet and head witch doctor, Steve Bannon and Glenn Greenwald respectively, have thrown Fox News onto the growing heap what even the right recognizes as RW garbage. All that’s left is confederate feudalism.

After O’Reilly, Beck, and Bolling were fired from Fox, they all went on to lesser careers with even more extreme views. If Tuckkker follows suit, the only thing left for him to be any more extreme is to don a white robe.

I expect Tucker Carlson to be named Campaign Manager for Trump.

Yes, it’s that time here, people are going to town in marking their spaces in the local community garden.
