Debt ceiling bill passes House, moves to Senate as deadline nears

The House voted Wednesday night to pass a painstakingly negotiated bill to suspend the debt ceiling, limit federal spending and avert a catastrophic U.S. government default, securing a major win for the GOP and the White House that seemed elusive just days ago.

The deal — brokered over the weekend by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and President Biden — was an enormous test for the narrow Republican House majority, their leader’s shaky hold over his party, and a White House that had long refused to compromise on the debt ceiling at all. At times, talks unraveled; at others, McCarthy and Biden projected confidence that they could strike a deal and stave off an unprecedented default on the nation’s debt.

In the end, they got a 314-117 bipartisan vote for passage of a 99-page bill that now heads to the Senate, where lawmakers will rush to enact the legislation before Monday — when the United States will no longer be able to pay its bills.

An all expense paid trip to Rural South Texas in July. Without the Federal benefits. Oh Joy…

This sounds like a complete waste of money and time.

My guess is that they will essentially send a bunch of ‘volunteers’ rather than an actual unit as the units are already prepping for annual 2 weeks training. And many of the units have required training that they need to undergo.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) said Wednesday that he’s deploying 100 National Guard troops to the U.S. border in Texas, heeding the call of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) and following in the footsteps of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

*snip*

Youngkin’s executive directive specifies that the 100 troops will be joined by 21 support personnel in a 30-day deployment, though the order is in effect for July through September. Democratic state lawmakers said they have been told by the administration that a one-month deployment will cost $3.1 million in state funds. Youngkin’s office confirmed that figure.

*snip*

“The Virginia National Guard is staffing the support request and has not assigned a unit to the mission at this time,” Guard spokesman A.A. “Cotton” Puryear said in an email to The Washington Post. “We expect the troops to deploy to Texas in July, but the exact time has not been finalized.”

If you’re looking for something to watch on Netflix, Blood and Gold is a thoroughly watchable movie in which a German deserter, hanged for it but cut down before dead, kills what feels like roughly a company’s worth of former comrades who are in a town looking for gold.

Alex Wagner had Senator Tim Kaine(D-Va) on her MSNBC show this evening.

He is miffed that somebody snuck a provision into the debt limit bill to permit the Mountain Valley Pipeline. He said that he plans to propose an amendment to strip the bill of that provision.

Beyond the issues with Senate debate and voting of the amendment, it would require the reconciliation of the Senate and House versions of the bill. Which would include having the House vote again on it.

Environmental advocates who have fought the Mountain Valley Pipeline in court for years say a deal between the White House and Congress to force its completion is corrupt and corrosive to democracy. But despite fears in some quarters that the language of the deal built into debt ceiling negotiations will upend the system of checks and balances built in the government, experts say it is likely to withstand any legal challenge.

Building the 303-mile pipeline across national forest and hundreds of streams in Virginia and West Virginia requires permits from federal and state agencies overseeing compliance with environmental laws. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, which has jurisdiction in those states, has repeatedly blocked those permits as failing to account for environmental damage, particularly construction pollution of local waterways that has led to fines against the company behind the project. Initially planned for completion in 2020, the pipeline project has dragged on for years, and its cost estimate has doubled to $6.6 billion.

The language in the debt ceiling deal — on which lawmakers are expected to vote Wednesday night to avert a June 5 U.S. default — directs the federal government to approve any outstanding permits for the pipeline and blocks courts from reviewing them or any other agency action in approval of the project. Any challenge to the deal itself can be heard only by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Colombia.

“Can they do this? Almost certainly, yes,” said Jay Austin of the nonprofit Environmental Law Institute. Lawmakers have made similar moves in the past, Austin said, that have been controversial but generally have been held to be constitutional.

Pipeline deal in debt limit deal angers climate advocates. Is it legal?

Alaska governor’s ‘pro-family’ adviser resigns after pro-Hitler and pro-rape comments resurface

A key policy adviser for Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R-AK) has resigned after the release of a series of inflammatory statements he made on a podcast praising Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and defending the right of husbands to rape their wives, among a number of other things, reported Alaska Public Media this week.

So “pro-family” he defends a man’s right to rape his wife…

re: #52 Dangerman (sigh…only in America)

It’s all very complex, which is why I posted that video.

Not raising the debt limit will have widespread negative consequences.

But the Treasury, as directed by Biden, will have to prioritize the spending of money that comes in as revenues to the Treasury.

The question is this: will repaying bonds/notes/bills be prioritized or will they be put at the bottom.

Required by law payments will come first, so entitlements and SS and retirement is likely near the top if not at the top.

Then will come defense spending.

Other departments may be put on holidays.

But again the question is how high to prioritize the debt instruments.

All this is moot now that McCarthy bowed to Biden (and I think we should use that word “bowed” as much as possible to trigger the right-wing nuts.)

I don’t trust any deal made for the future in exchange for votes today. All conservatives lie.

For example, this liar today.

McCarthy suggests new commission could look at Social Security and Medicare cuts (Raw Story)

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced Wednesday he was launching a commission tasked with looking at budget cuts - and he suggested Social Security and Medicare could come under his scalpel.

His pledge came just months after vowing such cuts to mandatory spending programs were off the table.

In February, President Joe Biden spoke before a joint session of Congress, telling Americans the GOP wanted to cut the programs they had paid into their whole lives. “Instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset every five years,” he said.

“That means those programs will go away if Congress doesn’t vote to keep them. Other Republicans say if we don’t cut Social Security and Medicare, they’ll let America default on its debt for the first time in our history.”

His comments got a chorus of boos from the audience of Republicans. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) shook his head.

Night folks. In the morning I’m off to Toronto. A family wedding on Thursday night. I’m also doing a gig at the Comedy Lab on Friday night (8 PM). The rest of the weekend will be with family. Wish me luck and try not to burn it all to the ground will I’m away.

I don’t trust any deal made for the future in exchange for votes today. All conservatives lie.

For example, this liar today.

McCarthy suggests new commission could look at Social Security and Medicare cuts (Raw Story)

Meanwhile, for those of us who’ve attention spans longer than that of a horny gnat, this sounds like total BS after his own caucus grabbed his nuts and twisted until he promised not to seek such cuts in the debt ceiling negotiations so they could lie to their constituents that they wouldn’t dare touch such spending.

I think you’re right on the money that it’s highly unlikely that McCarthy will hold up his end of any future deal, but that may be due to the possibility that he’ll be overthrown as Speaker. What is truly important is that the Bill did clear the House and now has to go to the Senate, for possible modification and additional amendments before being sent back to the House and eventually the WH.

While most of us agree that offering ANY concessions to the GOP grates, I fully expect the majority of the Dem caucus to be pragmatic about it and get this thru to help most people. If the House flips again in 2024, they can go back and do more.

For the most part, this would essentially disarm the GOP in this branch of government and we then have to take note of what SCOTUS does, so their star chamber rulings can be undone

If you’re looking for something to watch on Netflix, Blood and Gold is a thoroughly watchable movie in which a German deserter, hanged for it but cut down before dead, kills what feels like roughly a company’s worth of former comrades who are in a town looking for gold.

You may wish to keep in mind that UPS workers ‘might’ go on strike at the end of July. (That’s 60 days away.)

At this point, negotiations are not at a critical point. But there are those who suggest that things ‘could’ take a turn for an impasse.

Tbh, I have absolutely no idea what is ‘fud’ and what is likely. But I guess that we will all find out.

Freedom from Religion Foundation, today:

It seems like every time I write something on the current state of transgender rights in this country, I immediately have to turn around and write something new as the snowball of legalized bigotry continues to grow. This month alone has seen some of the worst anti-trans legislation in recent memory get signed into law, especially in Florida, where conditions are now so dire that the NAACP has issued a travel advisory heading into the summer vacation season.

It is now essentially impossible to safely exist as a trans person in Florida. You can be charged with trespassing if a cisgender person asks you to leave the bathroom. Your children can be taken away by the state if either you, someone in your family, or your child themselves are trans. Gender-affirming care has been totally banned for minors and essentially banned for adults due to the levels of restriction that have now been placed on it. I haven’t mentioned yet the expansion of the “Don’t Say Gay/Trans” law and the reclassification of drag performances (regardless of their actual content) to “adult entertainment,” leading to the cancellation of long-standing pride events and concern among trans and gender-nonconforming performers of all types that their ability to perform will be impacted.

There is absolutely no doubt that these laws are rooted in religious extremism. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a public signing ceremony for the anti-trans legislation at Cambridge Christian School, a conservative evangelical pre-K-12 school in Tampa, in an environment that the Associated Press described as having a “campaign-like feel” — especially compared to his private signings of anti-abortion and pro-gun laws. He tossed out Sharpies to a cheering crowd of supporters, publicly celebrating a systemic attack on bodily autonomy and personal expression. These laws have no basis in science or reality and instead were specifically created by organizations such as the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Heritage Foundation and the Family Policy Alliance to impose a Christian nationalist worldview on all Americans.

It’s not actually about trans people

Yes, the USPS does a bang up job. And, by law, is required to deliver everywhere.

Rural Nebraska may not be the ones facing the pain point. (This may be your opportunity to laugh at everyone else.)

As I understand UPS moves about 1/4 of all packages in the US. I would suspect that it is concentrated in more densely populated areas. As those are more likely to be profitable. So those would be the more affected areas.

Also, as I understand it, DeJoy has been reducing USPS infrastructure for the past few years. So USPS would have less capacity to handle UPS traffic were UPS to go on strike.

As always this is just my swag (Scientific Wild-A**ed Guess).

Pink News, May 23, 2023

A man in Ireland has been jailed for two-and-a-half years after a vicious attack on an 86-year-old woman with dementia, believing she was trans and a “predatory pedophile”.

Alex Bailey, 30, of Claragh, Ramelton, Donegal, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting the woman causing her harm.

He was sentenced on Friday (19 May) after also admitting charges of false imprisonment and robbery.

During the early-morning attack, in Dublin’s Ranelagh area, Bailey knocked Marie MacGowan to the ground, put her head in a wheelie bin while applying pressure to the lid, kicked and punched her in the face, the court heard.

According to the Irish Times, the pair met at about 2am after MacGowan got lost on her way home, with CCTV footage showing Bailey was with her for more than an hour - sporadically assaulting her for 42 minutes.

Three students eventually arrived and helped her.

The newspaper reported that MacGowan later told gardaí (Irish police): “I really thought I was going to be dead.”

She had to be treated for a fractured nose and blood loss.

In a victim impact statement, MacGowan’s son, Jack, stated that the assault “nearly killed her” and she required 24/7 specialist care for months afterwards.

“It has impacted her life in a major way and significantly reduced her quality of life,” he said.

He added that his mother had become obsessed with her “near-death experience”, regularly repeating the words, “please stop killing me” and “are you trying to kill me?”

One of the reasons that I did not dig heavily into the Aquino Satanic ‘thing’ was that I had just spent over an hour trying to resolve something.

Last week Congressman Nadler was quoted as saying that, basically, he had no problem with Ukraine attacking targets in Russia.

As a side note, a German Government spokesman said a similar thing Wednesday.

Anyway, I was searching for a decent tweet containing this information to post here.

However, every tweet that I could find which contained this information, and there were a bunch, was either far left, far right, MAGA, Russian cutout, or otherwise loony-toon.

And all spent more time editorializing how this was ‘bad’ and Rep Nadler was insane, ebil or both. A couple started talking about nuclear war, etc. Eventually, I had to move on to other things and give up on posting anything.

Afaict, what Nadler seemed to be doing was essentially proposing a policy change regarding legitimate self defense actions by the Ukrainians.

Never heard of that from MacArthur. Now Eisenhower did allegedly try to placate the Fundies and gave an order to discharge all the lesbians in the army. His staff being mostly female and queer were all of the opinion that their names would be first on the list. He’s supposed to have backed down quickly. It’s not even in kind, there’s a report that the actual targets were elsewhere and that’s why the drones, which were full with explosives, didn’t explode. For all we know, those might have been military targets or otherwise legal targets (like Putin; one of his residences wasn’t far away).

“Grooming” has become much like “pro-life” or “terrorism,” a meaningless word that is used for no other reason than because it’s more marketable than the verbal diarrhea that issues forth when you actually ask them to define it.

The people who scream that a student reading a book about a child have two daddies also think that there should be a Bible in every classroom and Bible study returned to school curriculums.

The men who lose their minds over the idea of students being able to approach a teacher about questions of gender or sexual preference are also the ones who will make crude jokes or express their envy of male students caught in sexual relations with female teachers.

The communities that are outraged when they learn that a school is showing Disney movies to students are also the ones who have nothing to say when they find out that Father McFeely has been using their own parish to host “Pat and Chats” with the altar boys after services.

It’s like I’ve said before, the entire “grooming” belief is just recycling of 90s myths about homosexuality, aging bigots trying to figure out how Little Johnny turned into Little Jenny the moment she got outside of her parents’ influence and refusing to acknowledge that the reason was that their child was always that way and social progress has made them feel safe acknowledging it openly instead of staying closeted to keep mom and dad happy that they raised a “normal” little Christian crusader.

So little is understood about what I’ll call “soul science”; what is it that makes us… us? (As a Christian, I believe there may not be a fully scientific explanation for it, but God has set the universe in motion with some pretty clearly defined rules of operation, so I’m not ruling anything out just yet.) I can somewhat understand and empathize with the old fossils who feel swept away by the tides of cultural change, but there’s nothing truly new here. Ask the indigenous Americans about the “people of two spirits” (I believe I got this correct, their term for transgender people), as an example. As I’ve always said, it’s fear of change that drives these people to desperation, a sense that the world they knew is slipping away from them and that they have to do something - anything - to save it, not realizing that scientific progress is less “Eureka!” and more “Huh, that’s funny.”

So Mike Pence is reported to be joining the Presidential race.

Why? To maintain his name recognition?

He has zero chance of winning.

According to the BBC article:

Mr Pence, 63, is a born-again evangelical Christian and his addition to the 2016 presidential ticket is credited with helping mobilise the crucial voting bloc on behalf of Mr Trump.

Which is nonsense. The Evangelicals were already drooling over DJT because he speaks their language: the language of absolutism.

Pence was put in more to balance out DJT for the sake of the GOP establishment, which is desperately searching for ways to remain in power without DJT.

Renton, WA does look like a center of Satanic depravity. A little former “downtown” of 1950s buildings surrounded by office buildings and automobile dealerships.

There is a nice pizza shop there.

Oops.

Three teenage friends reportedly hopped the fence of the pond between midnight and 3 a.m. Sunday night into Monday and held female swan Faye down while she was nesting.

Faye was killed at the swan pond according to police. The teenagers said they thought Faye was a wild large duck and decided to go “hunting.”

“They did not know that it was a swan, and they did not know that it was not a wild animal, that it was actually owned by the Village of Manlius,” Manlius Police Sgt. Ken Hatter said.

They took the swan back to one of their residences on Syracuse’s Northside and reportedly cooked and ate the swan.

They also took the four cygnets from the pond but intended to keep them and raise them as pets.

Nahh. I think people are lining up to challenge him, in the vain hope of one of two things:

1) For people like DeathSentence, they want to out-crazy Trump and try to win over his revolting base;
2) For people like Pence and Christie, they want to try to steer the Republican Party back off the cliff and try to win nomination as a non-crazy.

What nobody on the right seems to comprehend is that neither of those scenarios is at all realistic, because the MAGA Party is a cult of personality at this point. Louder, for the people in the back: If Trump runs, he is the nominee. Period. Out-crazying Trump isn’t going to win over any MAGA voters, because they don’t care as much about the issues as about the man who made it acceptable to let their freak flag fly in public. Running as a non-crazy is a non-starter because the MAGA base is by far the majority of the Republican Party’s voters these days, and no Democratic voter is going to vote for anyone to the right of Barack Obama at this point.

Pence’s presence absolutely helps Trump retain the nomination. He helps split up all the opposition to Trump. If you’ve got a bunch of candidates chasing after the same slim percentage of voters, Trump’s share remains constant getting about 50 points in national GOP polling, while none of his competitors seems to have more than a few points in any poll. DeSantis comes closest at 20ish.

Chesa Boudin has a new job.

Chesa Boudin has spent his whole life grappling with incarceration and its far-reaching implications. As the founding executive director of Berkeley Law’s new Criminal Law & Justice Center, he sees an exciting opportunity to build on his work of transforming the criminal legal system in profound ways.

“A lifetime of visiting my biological parents in prison and my work as a public defender and district attorney have made clear that our system fails to keep communities safe and fails to treat them equitably,” Boudin says. “I’m thrilled to join the nation’s premier public law school and engage with brilliant scholars and students to drive meaningful change by elevating the lived experience of those directly impacted.”

Chesa Boudin speaking
Boudin speaks last year at Delancey Street Restaurant in San Francisco, addressing a group that provides job training and sobriety support to formerly incarcerated people navigating recovery and reentry.
The center will be a research and advocacy hub to boost Berkeley Law’s public mission in the criminal justice arena. It will help foster research collaboration among faculty members and others, enhance law students’ training and practice opportunities, and strengthen connections between the university and the outside world.

“Since coming to Berkeley Law, I have wanted to create a criminal law and justice center to further advance the important work of our tremendous faculty and clinics in this area,” Dean Erwin Chemerinsky says. “I am delighted to launch the center and that Chesa Boudin will be its first executive director. Chesa was chosen after a national search and has substantial experience across the criminal justice system. He has thought deeply about the system, and I cannot think of anyone better to create and direct this important center.”

The evidence was sufficient before to indict on multiple felonies. The evidence is now overwhelming in support of indicting Trump on multiple felonies. The audio removes all doubt as to motive, intent, and possession of documents Trump knew he should not be in possession of as they were classified and nothing that he said or did changed their status as classified documents.

Dollar General is the fastest-growing retailer in America, opening about 1,000 stores a year. But following repeated violent incidents and federal workplace safety violations at stores, some Dollar General workers and labor advocates are calling for stronger safety and health protections.

Workers and their allies are rallying Wednesday outside Dollar General’s headquarters in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, ahead of the company’s annual shareholder meeting to protest conditions. They say the company is failing to take basic precautions to prevent violence in its stores.

Since 2014, there have been 49 people killed and 172 people injured at Dollar General stores, according to data from non-profit group Gun Violence Archive. A CNN investigation in 2020 found that at least six store employees died during armed robberies from 2016 to 2020.

Methodist church splits over LGBTQ issues

United Methodist Church proposes historic split over gay marriage and LGBT clergy

United Methodist Church leaders are proposing a split into more than one denomination in a bid to resolve years of debate over LGBT clergy and same-sex weddings, according to the church’s official news agency.

The proposal, from a 16-member group of bishops and church leaders, says a separation was “the best means to resolve our differences, allowing each part of the Church to remain true to its theological understanding, while recognizing the dignity, equality, integrity, and respect of every person.”

The restructuring comes after a contentious General Conference of the second-largest Protestant denomination in the US voted last year to reinforce the church’s stance against ordaining gay clergy and performing same-sex weddings.

New York Conference Bishop Thomas Bickerton, part of the group behind the proposal, told the official United Methodist News Service that heated debate at the conference demonstrated “the line in the sand had turned into a canyon.”

“The impasse is such that we have come to the realization that we just can’t stay that way any longer,” he said.

At the St. Louis conference in February, the denomination decided that United Methodist churches and clergy could face removal if they did not affirm its stance against gay marriage and non-celibate LGBT clergy by 2021.

The proposal calls for a new traditionalist Methodist denomination opposed to gay marriage and ordination of LGBT clergy. The current United Methodist Church will allow same-sex weddings and gay clergy.

Russian Politician Breaks Ranks And Calls For Putin To Be Replaced Live On State TV (Huffington Post UK, June 1, 2023)

‘UK intelligence said it was “highly likely” this was the first public call for the president to leave office since the Ukraine invasion began.’

An opposition politician called for Vladimir Putin to be replaced as president live on Russian state TV, in a bold move British intelligence thinks is a first.

While Russia is, in theory, a democratic state, President Putin has an exceptionally tight grip on the country, leading it to be widely regarded as a dictatorship after more than 20 years of his rule.

Having championed the invasion of Ukraine himself, though, there appear to be flickers of dissent forming - especially as Russia is far from winning the war.

And, as recounted by the UK’s ministry of defence, an opposition politician just went even further and called for a new president to be elected during the country’s presidential election next year - while appearing as a guest on Russian state TV, the NTV channel on May 27.

The MoD claimed: “Nadezhdin has been a vocal critic of the war since the invasion, but this is highly likely the first call for Putin to be replaced on Russian state-approved TV since it began.”

Nadezhdin is a Moscow municipal deputy, and was an ally of the murdered opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. He has been a regular on Russian state TV, and said only in January that the war was a “senseless situation”.

While criticism of the war itself has been ramping up in recent months, most have steered clear of attacking the president, instead blaming the army or the Russian defence ministry.

DOJ slams Jim Justice’s coal empire with 128-page civil lawsuit

alternet.org

On April 27, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced that he is seeking the GOP nomination for his state’s 2024 U.S. Senate race. Justice, if he becomes the nominee, is hoping to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.

Although Manchin’s centrist voting record has been a frequent source of frustration to the liberal/progressive wing of his party, his defenders have been stressing that he is a rare example of a Democrat who can win statewide in deep red West Virginia. Before Manchin was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, he was the state’s governor. Justice’s allies, however, believe he has a good chance of unseating Manchin if he becomes the GOP nominee.

Justice and Manchin are both strong supporters of fossil fuels and the coal industry, and Justice’s coal operation is now facing a 128-page civil lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for — according to Politico’s Kyle Cheney — “failing to pay more than $5 million in civil penalties assessed by the Department of the Interior.”

4-year-old girl accidentally shot, killed by another child in River Grove

cbsnews.com

RIVER GROVE, Ill. (CBS) — A 4-year-old girl is dead after being shot accidentally by another child in west suburban River Grove, police said.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, police and paramedics were called to the 2400 block of West Street in River Grove - and found the girl had accidentally been shot by another child in the same home.

Police said the child who was shot later died. She was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as Camila Ariana Duarte.

The father of the child said he was outside when he was alerted to the accidental shooting by another child, police said. He called 911 right away and is cooperating with investigators, police said.

The father - who holds valid Firearm Owners Identification and concealed carry cards, also admitted that he owned the gun that was involved - but said he kept it on a high shelf in a closet, police said.

Pride flag banned from flying outside a California city hall

ktla.com

There won’t be any rainbow flags outside the city hall of Redlands, California, this Pride month.

Councilmembers voted in May to outlaw the flying of the flag outside the building, arguing by 3-2 votes that the flying of the flag has been a violation of the town’s longstanding flag policy, KTLA reported.

“To roll this back, especially after flying it for the past two years, sends a horrifying message to the community,” one woman argued during a council meeting.

The Redlands City Council was being asked to amend the policy, which outlaws any non-official flag, before Pride Month began.

It is my opinion that if your gun was not locked in a safe and a child uses it to kill another child, you should have a mandatory 20 year prison sentence and no parole. No exceptions. If we can’t have rational gun laws to stop people from buying them, we can certainly use fear of incarceration to get people to keep their murder sticks away from toddlers.

Jordan’s royal wedding to get underway in ceremony packed with stars and deep symbolism (Associated Press, today)

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The wedding of Jordan’s crown prince to the scion of a prominent Saudi family was set to begin on Thursday in a palace celebration that drew massive crowds and a mood of excitement around the kingdom, while presenting the young Hashemite royal as a new player on the global stage.

The marriage of Crown Prince Hussein, 28, and Saudi architect Rajwa Alseif, 29, drew a star-studded VIP list headlined by Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate, who arrived at the palace and were welcomed by Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Queen Rania.

The celebrations hold deep significance for the region, emphasizing continuity in an Arab state prized for its longstanding stability and refreshing the monarchy’s image after a palace feud. It even could help resource-poor Jordan forge a strategic bond with its oil-rich neighbor, Saudi Arabia.

Good. Keep fucking up GOP!

Republicans are spending millions on turnout operations that are deeply flawed, insiders say

nbcnews.com

“That’s why we’re losing elections,” one Republican field veteran said of the conservative canvassing apparatus. “Nobody wants to admit it.”

A few weeks before last fall’s midterm elections, a paid canvasser in Nevada did what thousands of door-knockers across the country were doing: They went on an app and marked off the homes they had visited that day.

There was just one problem. This canvasser never went anywhere near those homes in a neighborhood in south Las Vegas. They were 8 miles away, sitting inside Caesars Palace casino, according to geotracking data obtained by NBC News.

The canvasser was working for an outside group backing GOP Senate candidate Adam Laxalt, who was seeking to topple one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents of the 2022 cycle. The canvasser was fired soon after the incident, according to two Republicans who worked on the canvassing effort.

If this were an isolated episode, it’d be a minor nuisance. But it wasn’t.

The large-scale voter contact effort that conservatives have put at the center of their political operations in recent years is plagued with issues, according to more than a dozen people who’ve worked in GOP-aligned field operations and internal data obtained by NBC News. Those issues include fraudulent and untrustworthy data entries, akin to what occurred in Nevada, as well as allegations of lax hiring practices and a lack of accountability.

Issues with canvassing arose in two of the closest losses of the 2022 election, four people familiar with those operations said. They were Nevada, where Laxalt’s narrow loss allowed Democrats to keep control of the Senate, and Georgia, where the GOP nominee for Senate, Herschel Walker, was ultimately defeated in a runoff election.

I can’t do that unless I have HP sauce. Dad’s legacy. When he worked as a welder at the Charleston Navy Yard during World War 2 several British captains were so grateful for his quick repairs that they gave Dad bottles of HP steak sauce and Lightfoot’s Pine Soap. Dad guarded the HP like it was a bar of gold because of the rationing.

If they were Californians, that would be illegal.

The Jackie Cooper Laws, passed after it turned out that this 1930’s huge star had been royally ripped off by his parents… says child performers receive at the very least scale, the parents can take at most 15% as a management fee and the rest goes into trust and the kids get it when they reach the age of majority.

Alcohol: a Death Star (shot of raspberry vodka dropped into a Blue Moon - “that’s no moon”)
Milk: Milk is an ingredient, not a beverage
Warm beverage: Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, medium roast, with a bit of cream

Yeah I’m a snob. But as someone who grew up in South Dakota and Iowa, I bear Megan Hunt no ill will about the ketchup. Solidarity with the farm-working class yo, and besides, it’s not like filet is real steak anyway. ////////////

GOP GOTV effort marred by fraud and vendors who lied about outreach efforts.

Instead of relying on volunteers, they paid canvassers and the results were that people lied about doing outreach, and failing to get out the vote.

More of this please. GOP is predicated on money flowing in to politics and vendors and grifters are all over the GOP efforts. Their failures are only helping Democrats.

Indeed. The GOP, via Trump, has accelerated its rush to become just a shallow grift of the desperate mouth-breathing racist dimwits. The game plan is now easy enough even for dipshits like Boebert & Gaetz:

1. Say some crazy shit that attacks a minority group that white angry evangelicals hate
2. Get blowback from decent people
3. Go on Fox/OANN/Twitter and rend your clothes and weep about how mean the lib’ruls are being to you
4. Collect checks from emails, texts & direct mail sent out to people aggregated by Facebooks “Look-a-like Audience” functions

If I were a bit more evil, I’d do this myself and retire in 6 months.

Private sector employment increased by 278,000 jobs in May and annual pay was up 6.5 percent year-over-year, according to the May ADP National Employment Report produced by the ADP Research Institute in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab ( “Stanford Lab” ).

The jobs report and pay insights use ADP’s fine-grained anonymized and aggregated payroll data of over 25 million U.S. employees to provide a representative picture of the labor market. The report details the current month’s total private employment change, and weekly job data from the previous month. ADP’s pay measure uniquely captures the earnings of a cohort of almost 10 million employees over a 12-month period.

“This is the second month we’ve seen a full percentage point decline in pay growth for job changers,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP. “Pay growth is slowing substantially, and wage-driven inflation may be less of a concern for the economy despite robust hiring.”

It apparently self-propels itself with a claimed near zero range loss on your EV.

“Feel true freedom with the L1’s self-propulsion capability. An electric drive motor and aerodynamic vehicle body combine for weightless, low-drag towing. Our design enables near-zero range loss to your EV, or better mileage for your gas vehicle. Go further than you thought possible.”

Macaulay Culkin’s dad was notorious in Hollywood for all the sleazy tricks he played to evade this law.

He extorted “producer’s fees” from the studios at every turn, and set himself up as Macaulay’s manager. He was flat-out evil and grasping, and Paramount eventually had to bar him from the lot, because he would just come there every day, wandering around, looking for some way to shoehorn his way into anything where there was any hint of $$ to be extracted.

re: #339 Khal Wimpo (free internal organs upon request!)

Macaulay Culkin’s dad was notorious in Hollywood for all the sleazy tricks he played to evade this law.

More on Kit Culkin, a frustrated actor who resented his kids’ fame:

Kit Culkin worked his child star son really hard, but Macaulay’s problems with his father went much deeper than that. He told Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast his dad “was a bad man … He was abusive, physically and mentally … You know, I can show you all my scars if you want to.” Kit, who had a reputation as a manipulative manager in Hollywood (via The Telegraph), was the same way with his son. Macaulay told CNN, Kit was “very controlling … he played games with you, just to make sure you were still in your place.”

Macaulay wasn’t the only target of Kit’s wrath. Patricia claimed he was often drunk and punched her repeatedly while she was pregnant. One time, she told The Telegraph, “He punched me in the head and about the body … dragged me out to the balcony, threatening to push me over the railing … I suffered two black eyes and substantial bruising.”

There were just over 50 votes to close debate so not enough to end a filibuster, why didn’t other dems filibuster it?
