From yesterday when you posted about meeting Christopher Lloyd:

I worked as a set painter on Things to Do In Denver When You’re Dead. I sat next to him at lunch and I think at some point he realized he was sitting with the construction folks and sauntered over to be with the other actors. But he was super nice. As a term, “speaking in tongues” has existed since Middle English, first appearing in the Wycliffe’s Bible (first English translation, 1382-1395).

Although that Bible was not authorised by the Catholic Church, it was the most popular English manuscript of its time; over 250 full copies of that Bible remain. Most are in rich people’s private hands and sell for millions of dollars when they come up for auction (another reason to punitively tax the rich to cure their money-hoarding).

“Glossolalia” (hey that’s in the Firefox dictionary) is a borrowing from Greek by a Canadian linguist to describe speaking-in-tongues with a academic veneer. That linguist first used the word in 1879.

Wikipedia says the greek word is γλωσσολαλία, which looks like a letter for letter translation to engilish. I was skeptical, but if you google the greek version, it shows up a lot.

Vicious Babushka  Jun 25, 2023 • 12:45:32pm

Here is Zedushka’s theory for why he thinks “Speaking in Tongues” became a thing:

Some synagogues (mostly Hasidic) are totally chaotic. Services supposedly start as soon as 10 men show up, but since people come in later, not everyone is praying the service together. One part of the service is in Hebrew, another part is Aramaic, some people prefer to pray in their everyday language which could be English or Yiddish or Spanish or Russian or French. So there are going to be a bunch of people down on the “prayer floor” and they are not coordinated. If you don’t understand the language to begin with, it will sound like a bunch of gibberish.

So they made up “Speaking in Tongues”

I find it impossible to care about whether or not trans girls (especially ones on puberty blockers) have some sort of edge over other kids. They’re kids! Kids want to be on a team and play sports with their friends! Very few kids view sports as anything more than this, and the tiny number of trans girls who also do sports and also get good at sports and also end up on school teams is so tiny that the only reasonable explanation for this is pure bigotry and hate, and I refuse to give bigotry and hate my time.

Let kids play. Let trans kids be who they are. Stay out of people’s lives, especially if it’s just for cynical political points.

Many years ago in high school English class, the teacher assigned students a nonsense word and asked them to stand up, define it, and use it in a sentence. Everybody was aware that the words were nonsense words.

A friend in the class was assigned, iirc, “managasek”. The friend thought for second, got a really evil expression on his face and started to stand. At which point the teacher saw the grin, said “nevermind”, motioned for him to sit down, and went on to the next student.

We never did ask the friend what he was thinking.

Apropos of nothing -

The Greeks used the term barbarian for all non-Greek-speaking people, including the Egyptians, Persians, Medes and Phoenicians, emphasizing their otherness. According to Greek writers, this was because the language they spoke sounded to Greeks like gibberish represented by the sounds “bar..bar..;” the alleged root of the word βάρβαρος, which is an echomimetic or onomatopoeic word.

And early take that there will be few repercussions on the individual Wagner mercenaries because Russia desperately needs them for the war .

*snip*
Mr Prigozhin’s retreat appears to have been part of a deal. The Kremlin claims that the Wagner leader will be given safe passage to Belarus; troops involved in the mutiny given immunity from prosecution; and others permitted to sign formal contracts with the Russian defence ministry. But if Wagner forces do return to the field, mistrust between mercenaries and regulars will be worse than ever. If they are sidelined, despite the promise of an amnesty, Russia will lose up to 30,000 soldiers, including a battle-hardened elite of 5,000. They will find it hard to replace them.

In a message posted to Twitter on Sunday, Greene cited strange behavior from her home electronics.

“Last night in my DC residence, the television turned on by itself, and the screen showed someone’s laptop trying to connect to the TV,” she wrote.

The lawmaker offered assurances that she was not in mental distress.

“Just for the record: I’m very happy,” she said. “I’m also very healthy and eat well and exercise a lot. I don’t smoke and never have. I don’t take any medications. I am not vaccinated. So I’m not concerned about blood clots, heart conditions, strokes, or anything else.”

Amy smacks down Chuck U. Todd and it’s glorious to see!

alternet.org

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) pushed back against NBC host Chuck Todd after he argued President Joe Biden is facing a “perception issue” over his son’s plea agreement on tax and gun charges.

On his Sunday Meet the Press program, Todd noted that Hunter Biden had recently attended a state dinner with his father.

“Do you think it was appropriate for Hunter Biden to be at the same event as the attorney general, Merrick Garland, was in the same week he accepted a plea deal?” Todd asked.

“You know, I think, as the president explains, that’s his son,” Klobuchar replied. “That decision was made by an independent prosecutor who is a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney who had ten years of experience, well respected. Philadelphia Inquirer reported that he was a registered Republican. He looked at the facts and evidence and made that decision.”

The senator said Republicans were welcome to run on Hunter Biden’s legal troubles.

Good luck because the president is going to be able to run on the strength of his work and bring 13 million jobs back to America in researching, manufacturing in our country, and in moving forward,” she explained.

“You understand the perception issue of something like that,” Todd pressed. “And do you wish that perception were different?”

“You always wish there were different perceptions, but that’s not reality,” Klobuchar asserted. “Reality is whether or not someone is going to be able to get their insulin, and the president has made changes. Reality is whether someone has a job. Reality is when they can go visit their grandma again in an assisted living.”

“Those are people’s realities,” she added. “Not who is sitting where at a state dinner.”

Ex-Fox host Dan Bongino caught being thrown out of Palm Beach restaurant

politico.com

Former Fox host Dan Bongino was spotted in the midst of a sticky situation in Palm Beach, Fla., where many conservatives have gathered over the past year since Donald Trump moved permanently to Mar-a-Lago, Politico reported Sunday.

Instead of dining at the country club, Bongino was spotted at Cucina, a high-priced Italian restaurant with modern Scandinavian decore and a highlighter-yellow awning.

According to the report, it was nearing midnight on Friday, and several employees were photographed forcibly removing Bongino.

Possibly, though it’s meant to be related to Acts 2:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues [1] as the Spirit enabled them.
5
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
7
Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
8
Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
9
Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

But they always forget the part about everyone else understanding them.

‘I don’t take medications’: Marjorie Taylor Greene says TV turns on ‘by itself’ to spy on her

Sure. Tell us another lie Bimborella!

rawstory.com

I’ve been making hot sauces, fermented, from dried chile and fresh, just playing around. Growing some peppers now. My preferred heat level is Srirracha level to higher, but short of painful. Most habanero based sauces are fine, and some ghost pepper sauces. The Ass Blaster or Maximum Butt Prolapse sauces aren’t my cup of tea. I did have a scorpion pepper sauce that was too hot for putting on top of a burrito but a teaspoon in a bowl or ramen or oats was super tasty.

Kevin McCarthy could use a little of Uncle Joe Cannon. The country would be better off, god knows. At the very least, he should draw a bit of wisdom from what Uncle Joe once said about political dealing:

Sometimes in politics one must duel with skunks, but no one should be fool enough to allow skunks to choose the weapons.

The skunks command the field now.

Alex Jones’ bonkers conspiracy theory: Trump knows about assassination plot and he’s ‘ready to die’

rawstory.com

Far-right firebrand Alex Jones prophesied on his Saturday night show that “they” were going to kill former President Donald Trump.

As a former president, Trump enjoys a tight circle of Secret Service protection that includes his cars and home.

Still, Jones thinks it will happen.

“And then I think they’ll blow his airplane up,” Jones said. “I really, at a gut level, believe they’re going to kill Trump. I mean, I believe the deep state establishment will murder him… he dies of a heart attack, or they poison him, or they blow his airplane up.”

re: #48 Vicious Babushka

Ingenious, but it’s from an incident in the Other Testament in which the disciples suddenly became able to speak in languages they did not know. Thus it was considered a sign of grace (leaving out the bit about the disciples speaking intelligibly in languages not known to them).

Scientists shouldn’t debate gaslighters

TL:DR Never have a debate with a lawyer if you are not a lawyer. But if forced to by extortion, I would ask him one thing - what data would cause him to change his views? If his “science” is not falsifiable (as I suspect), the debate ends because it is not about science but about religion.
__________________________

Never debate a lawyer unless you have lawyerly training. They care only about winning the debate using any rhetorical tool possible, while the scientist cares about facts. I know this from personal experience as I won a debate on the statement “Joseph McCarthy was a demogogue”. And I was the negative. Yep, much to my personal disgust I won the argument proving to the judges that McCarthy could not be a demogogue because he genuinely believed what he said. I won but realized truth did not really matter in a debate, even with rules, as much as finding the right tool to win. I am not suprised that Ted Cruz trumpets his debate training as though that is obviously a good thing..

Lawyers have a toolbox of rhetorical tricks not available to any scientist. Even with a truly impartial moderator (like a judge) the lawyer with the greatest set of rheorical tools wins. With a podcaster, a scientist simply does not have an adequate supply of tools here.

Back in my day, the rhetorical tool used most by denialists was the Gish Gallop. Telling a multitude of lies that are impossible for the scientist to refute in the time given worked well. After many years of debates with creationists and seemingly losing the debate to the Gish Gallop, a proper approach arose to deal with thie Gallop. And that was to never allow the Gallop to happen.Wrestle it to the ground. Force the denialist to stick with this one point since they brought it up. Do not allow them to move on until this point is dealt with. Call out their refusal to deal with the refutation of their point.

But today, with a whole new set of tools to add to the Gish Gallop - orchard picking (cherry picking on a massive scale), gaslighting, sealioning, whataboutism, sock puppetry, Tribalism (the “No True Scotsman” argument on steroids) and flat out lying - someone interested in creating models to understand a complex world starts at a disadvantage to a grifter just interested in power.

Now, if I was forced into a debate with RFK Jr because my family was being held hostage, I woud throttle any Gish Gallop and I would want him to respond to one thing - “has he ever been wrong wrt his science? What data would change his view?” I would be willing to bet he has never really changed his views, that no amount of data will change them

If he essentially states that no amount of data work would change his views, I’d end the debate because he is not taking about science, which has to able to be falsified in order to be science. He is talking about an area I have no expertise in - faith and religion.

Reset the clock. Another one caught in the act.

waow.com

A former Plover youth minister has been convicted of child sex assault.

Jordan Huffman was found guilty of two felonies of repeated sexual assault of the same child as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

Several other charges were dropped in the hearing, including first degree child sex assault.

Huffman will be sentenced on October 3.

The assault began in 2017. The child, who was 12 at the time, says it continued until 2019.

Authorities say Huffman was working as a youth pastor at Woodlands Church in Plover when the victim’s parents asked Huffman to mentor the child who was acting out at school and drinking alcohol.

Court documents say the victim was assaulted more than 10 times over a three-year span.

According to the court documents, the victim stated before his 13th birthday, Huffman provided the kid with alcohol or marijuana and the assaults occurred when the child was under the influence.

In the documents the victim stated that when he was around 15 he told Huffman that he no longer wanted to do anything sexual and Jordan respected that. He stated that they continued to hang out with nothing happening for about six months before Huffman told him that he no longer wanted to hang out with the child.

J Rubin article - Update on how Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is working to hold SCOTUS accountable for ethics. (Gift Link)

WaPo - Gift Link - Opinion
Sheldon Whitehouse was right all along: The Supreme Court is corrupt

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has been arguing for years that a flood of “dark money” flowing through right-wing front groups has corrupted the Supreme Court. Never has there been more evidence to bolster his claim.

Whitehouse (D-R.I.) told me in an extensive phone interview last week that Justice Samuel A. Alito’s Jr.’s op-ed in the Wall Street Journal intending to pre-but a ProPublica story revealing he failed to disclose gifts from billionaire and right-wing donor Paul Singer and recuse from a case involving Singer was “very, very weird.” And it was not merely because he took to the op-ed pages of a sympathetic right-wing Rupert Murdoch newspaper as though he were a panicky politician trying to control the damage. (If that were his intent, it horribly backfired because the stunt only called attention to his angry response and the underlying charges. He managed to make it front-page news. “”If you were filing a pleading, this would have pretty much failed,” Whitehouse observed.)

*snip*

All in all, the poorly reasoned argument amounted to what Whitehouse called “a painful exhibit for an actual ethics code.” A bill he co-authored with Judiciary Chairman Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), set to be marked up after July 4, would confirm that the code of ethics applicable to all judges applies to the high court, set up a process for screening ethics complaints and allow chief judges of the circuit to advise on how their circuits handle similar matters. This is “not remotely unconstitutional,” he noted. (Whitehouse wryly remarked that the last thing the justices want is a comparison to circuit courts’ conduct. “The best way to show that a stick is crooked is to lay a straight stick alongside it,” he said.) Whitehouse is merely asking for the court to develop a process that the judicial branch would oversee for the sake of restoring confidence in the Supreme Court.

Recipe for today

Gambas al Ajillo (Spanish-Style Garlic Shrimp)

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS

Buying frozen, shell-on shrimp with the heads removed ensures the freshest shrimp with the best taste and texture.

Marinating the shrimp in salt, baking soda, and garlic adds juiciness, crunch, and a bit of flavor.

Infusing the oil with shrimp shells and garlic creates layers of flavor.

Ingredients:
12 cloves garlic
1 pound large shrimp, peeled, shells reserved
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch red pepper flakes, or a 1-inch piece dried guajillo chile
1 1/2 teaspoons sherry vinegar
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves

Finely mince 4 garlic cloves and place in large bowl. Smash 4 cloves under the flat side of a knife and place in a large skillet. Thinly slice remaining four garlic cloves and set aside.

Add shrimp to bowl with minced garlic. Add 3 tablespoons olive oil, 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, and baking soda. Toss to combine thoroughly and set aside at room temperature.

Add shrimp shells to skillet with smashed garlic and add remaining olive oil and pepper flakes. Set over medium-low to low heat and cook, stirring and tossing occasionally, until shells are deep ruby red, garlic is pale golden brown, and oil is intensely aromatic, about 10 minutes. Oil should be gently bubbling the whole time. When ready, strain through a fine-mesh strainer into a small bowl, tossing and pressing the shrimp shells to extract as much oil as possible. Discard shells and garlic.

Return flavored oil to skillet and heat over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add sliced garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until pale golden brown, about 1 minute. Add shrimp and cook, tossing and stirring constantly until shrimp are barely cooked through, about 2 minutes. Add sherry vinegar and parsley and toss to combine. Season to taste with salt. Serve immediately.

Stopped at Mercado de la Familia in HMB today - reupped on some Valentina sauce, Tapatio, El Yucatero habanero, and a new one to me - says it’s for seafood. Also picked up two pounds of shredded quesadilla cheese and a bunch of tortillas (have squash blossoms in the back yard that need to get eaten).

Herdez is one of the best sauces you can buy

Though for _salsa verde_ I prefer the La Victoria, as it has (rightly) uses tomatillos, which many cheaper brands do not.

The Dona Maria mole sauce in a small jar is the bizness. I find it here for less than $6. If you follow directions to fluff it up with stock or water it makes a full sauce pan of mole. Most cheaper Mexican restaurants use it.

Typical of the authoritarians and barbarians masquerading as conservatives. There’s only so much power available and we’re not going to share it with you!

It’s always about power.

Too bad Trump doesn”t follow his advice.

It’s pretty wild that the GOP is now openly advocating for omerta like the mob.

“Snitches get stitches” on the political stage.

Trump says he’s being indicted for us. I’m okay with this. He can be tried for me, convicted for me, and live the rest of his miserable fucking life in prison for me…if he truly loves me(and the rest of us) he will do this without complaint.

You make a solid point there. After all, Trump is the Messiah, which means he has to be sacrificed by himself, to himself, for the rest of us.

And when he doesn’t raise himself from the dead in 3 days…that won’t stop his followers from endlessly worshipping his sleazy ass…

Why We’ve Gotten ‘Custer’s Last Stand’ Wrong for Nearly 150 Year

Little Big Man pretty much nailed Custer. An idiot narcissus who did more damage than good. And the narcissism of Manifest Destiny meant we had to wipe out all the tribes. Something Machiavelli said about revenge.
