Instead, Turley intends to use his time on the stand to attack the past impeachment of former President Donald Trump. (of course)

“The purpose of my testimony today is to discuss how past inquiries pursued evidence of potentially impeachable conduct,” the statement continues.

Instead of answering your question I’m just gonna talk about what I wanna

They all do this

Got Covid shot on Tuesday and had no reactions whatsoever; had the flu shot last Friday, again with no reactions. Haven’t decided yet about RSV.

I still can’t get the shots.

The only immunizations available to me are supposed to be at one Walgreens in Scottsbluff and another in Sterling, Colorado.

The Colorado place already said they won’t vaccinate people from out-of-state due to shortages, and the Scottsbluff place says they don’t know if they’ll ever get it.

I’m a fan of “Call me Raja” and have contributed to his campaign — but really think that sometimes witnesses should be able to complete their sentences or explain the technicalities of their position. Issues are often more complex than a simple yes or no.

They were yes or no questions, and the witnesses were grandstanding to get clips on FOX.

Nope. That was the correct way to deal with the questions.

“Did you write an op-ed supporting polygamy and paedophilia” is a yes-or-no question. Let a Republican ask if they want nuance for that.

was listening to PSA on my way in and Veitor (I think), made the point that polls in Iowa and New Hampshire are saying that 80% of Republican primary voters are at least open to someone other than Trump. If that really is the case, it makes the performances last night even worse.

They didn’t even feel like a JV team, it was like a Freshman team. You’d think they’d have at least one governor on the bench that didn’t look like they were created by ChatGPT

My guess is the real reason FOX and Newsmax cut away is because the Republicans and their so-called witnesses are being torn apart so badly that the network execs don’t want their audiences to see it.

They might realise that the conservatives (and Libertarian Turley) are lying to them. And if they’re lying about this, what else are they lying about? Is it all lies?

Anything for a paycheck? Anything to perform with Clapton despite all of his baggage - racism going back decades plus a unhealthy dose of antivax conspiracy theory bulkshit?

After all, we’ve seen musicians play private events around the world for despots and oligarchs and the worst of the worst, so what’s a “benefit” show, involving someone who is considered one of the great guitarists in history.

It seems that there’s more than a few musicians that purposefully lean into politicizing their concerts, but that seems limiting the audience, rather than seeking wider audience. I don’t get that. Does Clapton think he’s doing himself any favors cozying up with crackpots like RFK Jr. and spewing antivax bs?

Beats me what she was getting at since those seditious treasonweasels were convicted in courts of law and sentenced far less harshly than the sentencing guidelines recommend, let alone what prosecutors wanted. They got slaps on the wrist as compared to the magnitude of the crime (or the rhetoric of the judges when sentencing about the severity of the crime and the historic nature of what they were involved in).

They were investigated, indicted, tried, and sentenced in courts of law. A bunch took plea deals rather than face trial. Almost to a person, they got less than what they should have gotten.

If she’s bitching about quality of prison life, seek to reform the entire criminal justice system and make it more humane, but thinking that 1/6 defendants are political prisoners is just more gibberish from the seditious treasonweasel who also helped try to overthrow the government.

Trump already lost his motion to get Chutkan to recuse. He’s now trying a few other things to delay the trial, but with the gag order ruling set to come down tomorrow, it’s likely Chutkan is going to deny the Trump motions, and could in fact accelerate the trial. She should also sanction Trump and his lawyers for violating the bail conditions.

The rule with this type of person is just to ignore what they claim they’re saying and attend to how their words unintentionally reveal their ideology. In this case…MTG’s anger is precisely because she believes people are not equal and that the law should behave entirely differently to account for that hierarchy of superior and inferior types.

Jan 6th protestors should not be jailed at all, should not be subject to discomfort in prison, precisely because they are the superior kind. Her outrage is that their convictions represent some kind of equality before the law, that any kind of accountability is a slippery slope to actual equality. To improve conditions for other imprisoned people, or to question the nature of harsh sentences for other crimes, is to stand against the right and natural hierarchy.

Because she’s the product of American enculturation, her language borrows from a pre-existing set of rhetorical heuristics that speak in terms of rights and dignity and equality—the things invoked in the rhetoric of American politics—but, much like slave holders and segregationists and supporters of owning the Philippines before her, all invocations of these notions come with the implicit understanding that these things should not be universal.

lawhawk  Sep 28, 2023 • 11:50:37am

Congrats Senate, you’ve solved the great societal issue of all time - what you can wear on the Senate floor.

Meanwhile, the House GOP rushes headlong into a government shutdown because the seditionist/obstructionist/sabotaging GOP can’t help themselves and think a shutdown helps them (even though GOP states would likely disproportionately suffer because of things like national parks shutting down and all the tourism dollars related to that going away, transfer payments held up, and servicemembers and law enforcement not getting paid). Heck, the GOP are also out to defund law enforcement and border security, and DHS and CBP wouldn’t get paid either.

If you’re going to sling mud, you’ve got to have mud. The GOP doesn’t have any. There’s nothing about actual Joe Biden impeachable conduct.

Democrats are openly daring Comer to hold the vote on impeaching Biden, because they know the GOP can’t do it - there’s nothing to it, and if they cross that bridge, the GOP admits they’re burning down democracy to cover for Trump.

Oh, I should note that, besides being such a non-relevant statement to most American travelers, the “trains all ran on time” must only apply to coal and oil trains (if even that’s the case). Amtrak’s Empire Builder across ND is notorious for being late as the freight trains have priority on the tracks (and snow, so much blowing snow).

You’re giving the average Fox News viewer WAY too much credit. They might see this is a lie but making the leap to anything else requires much more brain power than they have.

Hecuba's daughter  Sep 28, 2023 • 1:12:02pm

One amusing take via the New Yorker from last night’s debacle:

Midway through the debate, the moderator Dana Perino asked a good question (not her only one) of former Vice-President Pence. “You said last month that if elected you would repeal all Obamacare mandates,” Perino said. “However, you made that same promise in 2016.” Why, Perino asked, was this time any different?

Pence, whose defiance of Trump on January 6th had earned him a reputation as a man of honor in the field, said, “Well, first let me speak to the mass-shootings issue.” And so rather than explain why Obamacare was still the law of the land if he’d had the power to repeal it, Pence explained that the solution to mass shootings was to expedite the death penalty, so that anyone found guilty of a mass shooting would face execution in “months, not years.”

Perino waited this barbarity out. Then she said shrewdly, “Does this mean Obamacare is here to stay?” The crowd laughed and clapped, because she was right. It probably is. ♦

MSNBC did say that there were several good questions from the moderators. Let’s face it, nothing matters if the candidates ignore them with impunity to pivot to their favored sound bite.

It’s a followup to his nuclear stress test on 9/21.
It’s been 5 years since his bypass surgery and he’s never had a stress test. Cardiologist wanted it done before handing him off to our primary care provider.

MrBWS claims he failed his stress test because he only lasted a little over 4 minutes on the treadmill part of the test (they wanted him to go a full 5 minutes but his legs gave out) and his heart rate never got anywhere near what they wanted, despite all of his huffing and puffing and moaning and groaning.

A retirement party was going on in the office opposite the treasurer’s office, and the county sheriff was there.

I stepped in to ask about my transit tag which is expiring today and can’t be renewed. What happens when I get the title in the mail, since I have to drive the car over to the sheriff’s office to have the VIN inspected before I can get license plates.

He said don’t worry about it, just drive it in. If I am worried about it, the sheriff will send the deputy out to my house to inspect the VIN for a $10 fee.

I sure as hell couldn’t when I did one seven years ago. But nobody seemed to be concerned enough about it to follow up.

My dad didn’t talk much about his own dad unless asked, though I know he respected and loved him. When I asked how granddad died (it was before I was born) he said, “he was carrying a wet carpet up from the basement and had a heart attack,” and then added “failed that stress test.”

Hollywood landmark, Art Deco masterpiece.

The Sunset Tower, Apartment Building, located at 8358 Sunset Boulevard.
Designed in 1929 by architect Leland A. Bryant, the Sunset Tower (as it was originally called) was a trendsetter from the moment it opened in 1931
It is considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Los Angeles area.

my people (both Irish and the German/Slovak/Austrian Empire sides) generally die of #1: heart attacks; #2: alcoholism; #3: strokes/cerebral hemorrhages.

Go further back to my great-grands and further back, and then you see things like liver cancer for my great-great-grandma in 1909 (probably due to a love of wine since she came from the wine region of Germany); tuberculosis and other lung diseases (several Irish great-grand uncles died of that in Buffalo at the turn of the century, they were all motormen), other stuff I’m still uncovering.

can you get them at your county health department?
we can here in TheBackwoods, but we go with our Appalachian-funded clinic if we can because we have insurance and it helps cover for those here who don’t have any.

I just checked availability here again. We have a one more places available now. (Scottsbluff 60 miles, Sidney 60 miles, Chadron 90 miles, Ogallala 100 miles).

I’ll give them a call tomorrow and see we can get vaccinated. The choice is Moderna (lack of infrastructure to keep Pfizer cold enough here). I’ll also ask them about RSV.

Concern that Italy’s supervolcano might go off.

Earthquakes hit Italy super volcano, raising spectre of evacuations (Reuters, September 27, 2023)

ROME, Sept 27 (Reuters) - A leading volcanologist has warned that mass evacuations might be needed in a town close to Naples, which sits on a so-called Super Volcano that has been hit by hundreds of small earthquakes in recent weeks.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck the area early on Wednesday, the strongest jolt in 40 years to rattle the volcanic field, known as the Campi Flegrei or Phlegraean Fields from the Greek word for burning.

Campi Flegrei sits across the bay of Naples from Pompeii, where thousands were incinerated by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. However, it is a much bigger volcano than Vesuvius and if it ever exploded at full force could kill millions.

Experts say there is no imminent threat of an eruption, but Giuseppe De Natale, the former head of the Vesuvius observatory at the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), called for urgent checks on buildings after repeated seismic activity that is pushing up the ground by 1.5 cm (0.59 inches) a month.

Speaking in a personal capacity, De Natale said the last time Campi Flegrei suffered a similar burst of earthquakes in the 1980s, some 40,000 people were temporarily evacuated from nearby Pozzuoli. The town now has a population of more than 80,000.

“Currently, I believe the more immediate risk is seismic. But it is clear that one must also consider the possibility of an eruption,” he told Reuters.

So in order to ignore some of the garbage news yesterday afternoon I looke for a movie - saw one called ‘Wrath of Becky’ on Amazon. Realized it was a sequel so I watched ‘Becky’ instead - kind of a cute revenge fantasy with a teen girl who has some talents. Fun but campy and not fantastically acted.

Watched ‘Wrath of Becky’ just now and it was much better produced - still campy as fuck and she kills a bunch of Nazis. I recommend sitting through the first to better enjoy the second.

this is some sort of crusade or hobby

it has nothing to do with the specific books

Conservatives (and to a lesser extent Libertarians) have always been opposed to public libraries.

As the article notes, hundreds of hours are spent processing her complaints about books, resulting in expenses far in excess of what a library or school district can sustain.

Whether she’s working with the Moms for Fascism or not hardly matters, since the effect is the same.

Yeah, they get around. But Chadron is permanently associated with tornadoes in my brain because in 1986 Mr. w and I drove through the area and heard three separate tornado warnings for Chadron. Then it dumped rain across Ohio.

Wow. I only know about both sets of grandparents, but no cancer. My Georgia grandparents both died of heart attacks—probably a combo of genes and diet (and that my granddad was a hardass to his wife, so she died at 74, then he also died of a heart attack and regret). My dad’s mom I found sitting peacefully in a chair dressed to go out to brunch with a friend at 98yo.

The heart disease is lots of time due to diet, but sometimes it’s just genetic.
My sister, a year younger than me, had a massive heart attack eight years ago and the surgeon couldn’t do the full multi-bypass, so she has heart damage, but she’s still with us!
She also is now part of a Duke University because she apparently has a genetic mutation that has something to with statins not working as expected:

corporate.dukehealth.org

I know our mom (92 yo) has bad reactions to statins. The rest of us are just doing the best we can.
