Powerful New Music From Trevor Rabin: “Oklahoma”

Music • Views: 13,573

“Oklahoma” is the third track taken from the album ‘Rio’. As Trevor describes: “In 1995 I wrote the germ of a lyric inspired by the devastating bombing in Oklahoma. It traumatised the entire nation and will always be a dark day for the country. Thirty plus years later I believed the time was right and ok to tackle the song I had written. It’s dedicated to family and friends who lost loved ones.”

I went with 400mbps. Fast enough for what I need. Should be plenty for streaming Amazon/Netflix/Hulu/Disney+/Whatthefuck later when I get a TV….that’s still a ways away as there’s wood paneling to be addressed and the only cable input I found is in a weird location so I’ll have to splice and re-route it.

Okay, so as you already know I’m not getting the Rivian - can’t justify the extra 85k this month…or for the next 20-30 months really. But I need a truck. So I found a Ram 1500 Bighorn in Stockton (about 70 miles away) for under 30K (my upper limit) with reasonable miles (2021 with 62k…all central valley miles)…and asked Carmax to move it to their dealer about 12 miles from me…Thursday night. It arrived this morning and has been checked out and I’m scheduling a test drive tomorrow.

Oh, and getting it moved an hour closer to me? 99 bucks.

Yep. I’m pretty sure the hardware manufacturers learned their lessons from that, but my guess is that they tried some clever trick to optimize the software overseeing their charging cycle and introduced a bug in the process.

No, it’s because grounding connectors look a bit different here, here are two springs, top and bottom if you’re in Schuko country, and a pin in the connector if you’re in French country. That’s a combi connector for both. We use the Schuko in Sweden.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is not winning any friends lately amongst the very-left.

Associated Press, two hours ago

California governor rejects bill to give unemployment checks to striking workers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California won’t be giving unemployment checks to workers on strike, with Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoing a bill Saturday that had been inspired by high-profile work stoppages in Hollywood and the hotel industry.

Newsom, a Democrat, says he supports workers and often benefits from campaign contributions from labor unions. But he said he vetoed this bill because the fund the state uses to pay unemployment benefits will be nearly $20 billion in debt by the end of the year.

“Now is not the time to increase costs or incur this sizable debt,” Newsom wrote in a veto message.

The fund the state uses to pay unemployment benefits is already more than $18 billion in debt. That’s because the fund ran out of money and had to borrow from the federal government during the pandemic, when Newsom ordered most businesses to close and caused a massive spike in unemployment. The fund was also beset by massive amounts of fraud that cost the state billions of dollars.

He’s caught on quick and we had a full house tonight (bonus $!) plus everyone was in house by midnight so we could run audit early. Once that’s done, it’s all just the busy work. So being my birthday night, punched out early and am sitting here with a Guinness and a tot of rum in front of me and music in my headphones. Chill for awhile and then actually get some sleep while it’s dark - fancy that! Happy birthday indeed 😉

Yeah, I got asked this morning to talk with our own rookie part-time auditor, as apparently he’s not clear on what the job actually entails and is only doing the bare minimum (i.e. laundry, paperwork, check-ins). I didn’t have the heart to tell management that most of the shit that I do on a nightly basis wasn’t part of the job when I got hired and that as management that’s really a chat they should be having with him themselves. They certainly demonstrated how little they think of my management skills by passing me over for the second time in two years for promotion.

We have a checklist. I do what’s on it & taught him that. If they want more, we’ll need to have a discussion about that so thankfully not your problem here.

Does anyone recall the particular political ideology which calls for jailing socialists?

Elon Musk calls for jailing San Francisco supervisor Dean Preston

Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, called today for the jailing of District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston.

“Dean Preston should go to prison,” Musk posted, in response to a Mission Local article reporting the passage in committee of legislation on Thursday, introduced by Preston, that would ban security guards from unholstering their weapons over property crimes.

The democratic socialist Preston’s legislation was unanimously supported by the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee’s three moderate members, Catherine Stefani, Matt Dorsey and Joel Engardio.

Musk has made no secret of his disdain of the supervisor: Last week, he called for Preston to be fired and named him “arguably the person most responsible for the destruction of San Francisco.” Half an hour later, he pledged $100,000 to a political action committee fundraising to unseat the supervisor, who is the only democratic socialist on the Board of Supervisors.

The PAC, dubbed Dump Dean and run by the political pressure group Grow SF, said they had not received a donation from Musk and would, after today’s comments, not take one in the future.

“We won’t accept the donation,” said Steven Buss, one of the co-founders of the group. Buss said he had never believed the donation would materialize and had not been contacted by Musk.

We have checklists, but not only are their outdated, it’s become habit for people on every shift to either not fill them out or to just mark everything off as completed even if you never even so much as lifted a mop or wiped down a counter. We’re running a skeleton crew and struggling to keep up with the workload, so that much of the extra shit that ended up as our responsibility due to the new ownership just gets dumped on audit because we “have so much free time.” Which has led to a situation where management keeps hiring for the audit position on the idea that you just sit on your ass all night and do a bit of paperwork, but then you start the training only to realize you just signed up to be a housekeeper, dishwasher, and personal servant all in one.

That sucks. Thankfully none of my managers have sugar coated what’s expected. First night shift walked through all of the responsibilities - janitorial, paperwork, getting the coffee station ready, etc. No laundry at my current location. I made that clear before even talking to them as my back no longer allows me to deal with hotel laundry other than perhaps towels. Of course, I have done enough places and different jobs by now that I’m paranoid about what is expected and what’s on the job description. If they want it done, they better have it written up or they’ll learn the definition of “Malicious compliance” and then later find out that, yes, they’re going to get stuck for UC checks while I look for a different job because they screwed the pooch.

Yeah, I think I’m gonna have to come in one of my days off soon and have a sitdown with the GM about things going forward. Instead of doing anything to help me out and deal with the stress, I’ve had the impression that they’re doing the exact opposite by slacking on the day shifts and just passing on their savings to me because of the false impression that I have nothing to do at night. And I’m running into that service industry reality that they can’t afford to fire me but they won’t promote me so I’m basically stuck in this job until I either quit or transfer out.

Meanwhile, in Ankara:

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Sunday that a terrorist blew himself up and another was “neutralized” in a terror attack targeting the headquarters of the Turkish National Police in the capital Ankara.

Yerlikaya said in a social media post that two terrorists approached the entrance of the building with a light commercial vehicle and one of them blew himself up. He added that the other terrorist was “neutralized” in the ensuing shootout with police that also left two police officers slightly injured. “Neutralized” is a term used by Turkish authorities to describe terrorists captured dead or alive.

Yeah, I ran into that 3 hotels ago. I finally said FU & quit to work at what turned into a dead end and got a temp job at a Kwik Trip instead. That lead to a good hotel (the KT held their monthly staff meetings there. One month I asked the manager “are you hiring” and she said yes :) LOL! )

Microwave follies:
So my last microwave (Sanyo) I bought because I broke the glass Lazy Susan plate in my previous one. When I tried to order the plate, it cost more than an entire new microwave.

When I set up my new Faberware last night, I noticed it has the exact same plate as the Sanyo. (It even has the same wheeled track the plate sits on.)

So I’m saving the plate and track in case I break the one in the new microwave.

“Right to repair” doesn’t mean much if the parts cost more than the whole item.

Race Scientists Ask You Believe in Impossible Things (Fardel’s Bear, a log of the alt-right, September 27, 2023)

When racial hereditarian researchers tell you they are objective scientists only concerned with the rigorous scientific pursuit of truth, what else do you need to believe to accept that claim? What are the markers of an open-minded researcher who is completely nonpartisan politically? We would expect that person to be careful not to entangle themselves and their research with those who are pursuing political ends; those who seek to use the mask of science to advance specific policy options and social orders. We would not expect them to draw upon political writers as authorities for their scientific claims. We would not expect them to collaborate with people pushing a political agenda.

In a recent article (goes to Springer, September 14, 2023), Michael Woodley, Matthew A. Sarraf & Mateo Peñaherrera-Aguirre write that they believe the Holocaust happened. They also want to make clear that They are “hereditarians” not racists. Nor are they eugenicists. Oh, and Woodley especially wants us to know that he had nothing to do with his work being cited by the Buffalo shooter who killed African Americans in the name of racial purity. (I know what you are thinking, “Where does Woodley stand on the existence of Bigfoot?” Well, he appears to think the jury’s still out on that question).

Of course, anyone who must take to print to deny they are Holocaust deniers, a scientific racist, a eugenicist an inspiration for a racist terrorist might want to stop and think about why they are so characterized by so many people. An obvious question is, “Maybe it is me?” It appears that the authors never ask themselves that question. They portray themselves as objective scientists and their many, many critics must simply misunderstand the nature of science and objective inquiry because they are so blinded by “leftist” ideology. To believe their claims, you must believe a host of other impossible claims they use to support it.

Let’s be honest, the people screaming the loudest about “right to repair” are those who own or operate off-brand repair shops who are scared that manufacturers are slowly driving them out of business by turning everything electronic in your life into a black box that only their “licensed technicians” can service. It’s not going to save you or me any money, it just means that the guy who’s gouging us doesn’t have “Licensed Ford Mechanic” in his job title.

What the hell kind of plug is that, anyway? What planet is that from?

British plugs look big and bulky but they have a built-in fuse and child protection.

They consist of one long plastic rod and two metal ones. The socket openings remain closed until the long plug pushes them open for the metal rods to slide in.

Able to get the par and match my longest streak (85).

Watched alma mater (Lenoir-Rhyne University) play an almost flawless game yesterday in a 56-3 victory. The team is now 5-0 - and the defense has given up just 27 points thus far. The Bears are ranked 14th in Division II. A notable alum is current New England Patriots starting safety Kyle Dugger (number 23).

Rodney Alcala. Right up there with Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy or Gary Ridgeway - though not as well known, or mostly forgotten about, which is surprising, as it’s suspected by authorities that he may have killed well over 100.

Musk is like Trump, there’s a better than even chance that money is somehow involved. Either he has business interests that in Russia that Putin can make or break, debts in Russian banks, or he’s got some future plans in Russia that could be fubar if he angers Vlad.

No. It’s just Musk is a craven coward who respects the real possibility of violence towards him by Putin or any other dictator.

Musk despises democracy because in his view it is weak, egalitarian and cannot last. Only the single- minded focus, direct or stochastic threats and violent acts of dictatorships can make a society last over time. Musk is a fascist. A few years ago he was just a fellow traveler. Ever since the initial racial discrimination case in Fremont a few years ago, he changed to full-blown fascism and moved to Texas to be with a bunch of his fellow fascists.

It is time to nationalize Starlink, Space X and force the BOD to fire Musk as CEO of Tesla.

I oughta downvote you just on general principle.

It ain’t Christmas season any earlier than the day after Thanksgiving and anybody who says otherwise is wrong!

The HOA prevents us from starting to decorate for a holiday more than a month out, so today is the first day we can start officially for Halloween. The stores don’t know this, because they put up their Halloween decorations at the beginning of September, and have removed almost all of them now and are starting to put out Christmas decorations. If patterns hold like last year, they will begin removing Christmas stuff the second week of December.

168
Dr Lizardo  Oct 1, 2023 • 6:09:47am

In honor of Halloween, here’s a little J-Horror for you. Teketeke, from 2009, based on the well-known Japanese urban legend of Teke Teke (which concerns the vengeful ghost of a schoolgirl whose body was cut in half by a train). Written by Takeki Akimoto and directed by Kōji Shiraishi. In a spoiler tag because it’s NSFW (violence). Not the best picture quality unfortunately, but it’s got hardcoded English subtitles.

169
Dr Lizardo  Oct 1, 2023 • 6:23:52am

On the subject of J-Horror and Halloween, this urban legend - Kisaragi Station - would make an absolutely fantastic short horror film. I wouldn’t change a single thing, even the unresolved ending. I can easily visualize how the film would look.

No one won last night’s PowerBall jackpot, so it moves up to real money: $1.04B.

Of course that is the annuity value, the present cash value is much less.

All the more so now as annuity rates jumped up again. I do not like how annuity rates are going up all the time. It tells me money managers think inflation and/or high interest rates are going to be around for a while.

As for me: had many plays with two white balls, but only one with three white balls. Also two lines with a wb+pb combo. $17, which is far short of the $975M jackpot value.

Once again I lament that getting a three white ball hit only paid $7 even though the odds are 1 in 580. I’d make a whole lot more money gambling in Las Vegas.

‘Exceedingly dangerous’: Why the rise of Christian nationalism is ‘entirely out of our control’

Note who is whacking the alarm bell on this…

In a Sunday, October 1 op-ed, New York Times opinion columnist David French posits that Christian nationalism may not be “serious,” but it is “very dangerous.”

He argues, “It’s not a serious position to argue that this diverse, secularizing country will shed liberal democracy for Catholic or Protestant religious rule. But it’s exceedingly dangerous and destabilizing when millions of citizens believe that the fate of the church is bound up in the person they believe is the once and future president of the United States.”

French notes that upon seeing “a tremendous surge of interest in Christian nationalism” immediately following the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol, “I started to hear questions I’d never heard before: What is Christian nationalism and how is it different from patriotism?”

The columnist cites Baylor University church history professor Thomas Kidd, who argues, “Actual Christian nationalism is more a visceral reaction than a rationally chosen stance.”

French responds to Kidd’s argument saying, “He’s right. Essays and books about philosophy and theology are important for determining the ultimate health of the church, but on the ground or in the pews? They’re much less important than emotion, prophecy and spiritualism.”

That’s why the Trump fever won’t break. That’s why even the most biblically based arguments against Trump fall on deaf ears. That’s why the very act of Christian opposition to Trump is often seen as a grave betrayal of Christ himself. In 2024, this nation will wrestle with Christian nationalism once again, but it won’t be the nationalism of ideas. It will be a nationalism rooted more in emotion and mysticism than theology. The fever may not break until the ‘prophecies’ change, and that is a factor that is entirely out of our control.

I wouldn’t be too quick to pronounce the MAGA bloc (or at least the House Free Dumb Caucus) quite “neutralized” just yet - see Matt Gaetz’s gibberings above. They still have a lot of sway over the House GOP: their “bloc” is, if only a minority, too big to be ignored.

Gotta let his supporters kill, or try to kill and get arrested so they can say they were only following his orders, before the courts will remand him into custody. The Case for Amplifying Trump’s Insanity

“…On the political left, there has long been a steady drumbeat of admonishment on social media for those who highlight Trump’s awful rhetoric. Whenever I tweet about Trump’s dangerous language, there’s always the predictable refrain from someone who replies: “Don’t amplify him! You’re just spreading his message.”

The press, to an astonishing extent, has followed that admonishment. I looked at the New York Times for mention of Trump calling to execute shoplifters, or water the forests, or how he thinks an 82 year-old man getting his skull smashed in his own home by a lunatic with a hammer is hilarious. Nothing. I couldn’t find it.
…………..

“…persuadable voters are being given the chance to forget the horrible stuff Trump did that they once knew about, all while reading blaring headlines about how Biden is old. (Biden is three years older than Trump — but, and I can’t believe I need to say this, elevated age is not remotely the same as being an authoritarian fraudster, found liable for rape, who stole the government’s nuclear secrets and sought to overturn an election to stay in power by inciting a violent attack on the US Capitol).”

I remember the first year or two of Trump, when I’d casually mention that it’s a near-certainty that he’s a diagnosable sociopath, people would be skeptical. They aren’t anymore.

I later read a book on Samurai warfare, which is basically that.

Once a Samurai battle is joined, everybody just rushes in, so the point is to deploy them properly in advance. And there is an arrowhead formation for attack and an “oxbow” formation for defence, a “crane’s wings” formation to envelop the enemy, etc…

LMAO at the Daily Fail.

They actually think Newsom will appoint Megan Markle to replace Dianne in the Senate?!

dailymail.co.uk

She has made no secret about her left-leaning politics and belief that women can change the world.

So it may come as no surprise that Meghan Markle’s name was being bandied about in Hollywood last night as a long-shot replacement for Californian Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Indeed, within minutes of 90-year-old Feinstein’s death being announced on Friday, the Mail on Sunday was told ‘phones lit up’ with speculation the Duchess of Sussex could throw her hat in the ring to serve out the remaining 13 months of Feinstein’s term.

A major Democratic donor who is close to Californian Governor Gavin Newsom - who will choose Feinstein’s replacement - told the MoS: ‘Meghan is definitely a long-shot but in the craziness that is US politics these days it’s not an impossibility. Crazier things have happened.’

Earth to Daily Fail…Newsom is more likely to appoint Mel Brooks than Megan… 🤣
