New Washington Post Publisher Infuriated His Old News Corp Staff During Phone Hacking Crisis
Will Lewis was tasked with cleaning up News Corp’s hacking scandal in Britain—and ex-colleagues say he threw them to the wolves to protect the powerful.
As Will Lewis settles into his new gig as publisher of The Washington Post, a civil trial playing out in London’s high court could dredge up a controversial chapter from his past.
From mid-2011 to mid-2012, Lewis was an executive member of News Corp’s Management and Standards Committee, set up following the phone-hacking scandal that engulfed Rupert Murdoch’s universe and led to the shutdown of the News of the World after 169 years.
While Lewis has described himself as a “junior” member of the operation, some refugees from News International say he played a lead role in what they call a “witch hunt” and claim he betrayed rank-and-file journalists to protect the brass.
Amid intense pressure, News Corp launched the Management and Standards Committee in response to concern that executives including Rupert Murdoch and his son James—who was running the UK-based News International—could be in legal jeopardy under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Lewis, who had been group general manager at News International, was appointed to the Committee, along with now-deceased former sports journalist Simon Greenberg (Lewis’ childhood friend and a former News of The World journalist). Alongside a team of some 100 lawyers from white-shoe firm Linklaters, and forensic accountants from PricewaterhouseCoopers, they worked from a secret bunker within News International’s east London location, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.
More than a decade later, some of the targeted reporters remain traumatized and angry, particularly at Lewis, who has now risen to the upper echelons of American media.
“Turning over journalists who overwhelmingly turned out to be completely innocent [and who] had all their contacts and confidential sources handed over to the police—if that is his idea of good journalism, then I’m a monkey’s uncle.” Larcombe said.
And this Pre$$titute is now in charge of The Washington Post.
Let. That. Sink. In.

The only thing moderate about Tricky Nikki is her intelligence.
She’s lying by omission.
“…In 2010, Haley co-sponsored a bill proposing that life begins at fertilization, with due process and equal protection both applying to embryos, essentially imposing a complete ban on abortion. The bill, which died in committee, did not include any exceptions — not for rape, incest or the life and health of the mother.
……….
While campaigning for president, Haley has so far largely dodged specifics on questions about the number of weeks at which abortion should be federally banned.

Nikki Haley’s history on abortion policy includes backing strict bans in S.C.

In an article about cities giving money to low income citizens that get mostly spent on food and housing and how it helps them:
While Austin was the first city in Texas to test a basic income program, it’s not the only city. But not everyone in the state supports them.
Last week, State Sen. Paul Bettencourt sent a letter to the state’s attorney general asking him to declare a new program in Houston unconstitutional.
Harris County, which includes Houston, earlier this month launched a guaranteed basic income program that gives low-income residents up to $500 a month.
The program’s attorney told the Houston Chronicle that Bettencourt was “more focused on political games and weaponizing government institutions than making life better for the people of Harris County.”

One of the stupidest things around is the idea of an expiration date on something like a cup of dehydrated ramen soup. We sell this semi-high end brand “Mike’s Mighty Good Craft Ramen” (rolls eyes) it’s good enough and not as salty but yeah, the marketing is a bit OTT. So like 13 cups of the vegetable flavor ramen (not the miso, alas) at $3.50 a pop are “out of date” as of yesterday so they were pulled to throw away. Say what? But apparently if the guests see the dates, they whine. So I’ll snarf them. A little mushroom or chicken in it and it’s a nice fast meal & when the boy’s visiting he’ll even cook it too.
I made meatloaf the other day, and did you know that a sleeve of crackers is two cups crushed?

Back in the days of yore, when we were owned by a company that budgeted enough for us to get regular shipments of stuff for our market, it was pretty common in the winter for us to see a box in the back labeled “Free to a good home” of various bags of chips and other items that had gone “out of date” at the same time. The only thing more ridiculous was when there’d be a guest who’d grab a bag that had “out of date” perhaps a day or two prior and ask me if they could have it for free or reduced price.

As a fan, I would rather see images of her cheering than shots of old white dudes that own the franchises in crypt-keeper mode. Its easily more tolerable than watching a former official explain away why what everyone sees as a penalty not get a flag thrown, that kind of league ass-covering for thee officials is kind of lame, although I will grant you the notion of seeing these plays unfold in real time and getting it right all the time is a damn difficult ask.

Yeah, seen plenty of Steve1989MREInfo’s videos to know that the US Army’s food preservation techniques left a lot to be desired. Granted that he’s dealing with a lot of C-Rats that are eons old by now, but still you question what genius thought that putting acidic foods in plain steel cans was a good idea. On the other hand, it wasn’t until I started watching his videos that I learned canned bread and canned bacon were a thing.
Donations to abortion funds have fallen significantly after a surge in donations in the immediate aftermath of Dobbs. This means they can’t help all the women who need assistance to travel out-of-state for an abortion. I make a monthly donation to the Chicago Abortion Fund; please consider making a donation to the abortion fund of your choice.

The complacency has started setting in again. “They’re not coming for me, so I’m safe.” Women who live in blue and purple states are figuring that the Dems in the state capital won’t ban abortion so they’re not at risk. This is how Repubs eventually institute a national ban, by coming up with some language on the national plank about “states rights” or “local control,” then when they get the numbers ramming through a bill while telling folks “If the voters didn’t want it, they wouldn’t have elected us.”

Looking at some of the numbers, the amounts being donated now are not much different from what was being donated before Dodds. The real problem appears to be that abortions now cost 2-3 times as much because of having to transport women out of state. Those are numbers tha require a lot more money to be donated.

Democrats have to get the message out that Republicans don’t even have to pass a bill to ban abortion nationally, but only elect Trump. His FDA will pull the abortion pill from the market, and his AG will interpret the Comstock Act as banning abortion nationwide.

Maybe. But I also expect it to be a major campaign issue. And the SCOTUS will hand some more rage with its review of FDA approval for the medication aportions that will come out this summer. I think a lot of women will be pissed as hell and will not be compacent. Not when the SCOTUS takes away ther right to the plls.

Yep, women and their loved ones in red states who need abortions need to learn how to cover their tracks, because they are going to be prosecuted. You don’t use social media, and you use a burner phone paid for with cash if necessary and destroy it after you’re done.

Germans eat kale in the wintertime. It is anything but trendy, in fact it is seen as downright stodgy and old-school. But it is good with Pinkelwurst from Bremen. (btw Pinkelwurst translates literally as “pee sausage”)

Signal is compromised. The code has been cracked by several law enforcement agencies. It’s ok for most people’s private needs (ie “adult” entertainment of each other shall we say) but don’t do anything they might get a warrant over.
The other current contender is called Session but it uses the Signal codebase and worse yet they are out of Australia which has a very nasty law that allows the government to force developers to put a backdoor into an app. If said developers tell about it, a 10 year vacation in Club Fed minimum will happen.
At this point, the only totally secure option remains TOR and things like TAILS built around it.

re: #187 No Malarkey!

I think what the SCOTUS is most likely to do is turn back some of the liberalization of prescribing the drugs. No more telemedicine, etc. They won’t turn over the original FDA ruling but make it harder to get the drug.
But the other drug used, Misoprostol, can also induce abortions by itself. It has been around too long and is important in too many other indications to be outlawed. But expect them to try.
I think what might be more likely to impact the FDA is the SCOTUS overturning Chevron. If no Executive office can regulate anything unless it is specifically supported by direct COngressional action. how can any drug be approved?

Which is why I am glad that, even though it supports Nazis, the Biden-Harris HQ still is on Twitter (281K followers). And Threads (134K followers) They also have a site on Trump’s Truth Social (81K followers). 815K subscribe to him on Youtube. Not surprisingly he is not on TikTok. But he is using short form videos elsewhere. Here is this one to make sure we all know who was responsible for overturning Roe.
Here is an instagram video (17 million followers!!) that has 66k loves and 7000 comments. It is from his speech in South Carolina on the 27th. If you have not seen it, please find the time. And realize that Dark Brandon has this. This is from 1:32:33
Angry Biden is amazing and gets people’s attention (man, I never want him angry at me, although he would probably just be ‘disappointed’), even though he apologized shortly afterwards for getting angry. But he brought up abortion, education, the border, Trump’s mental decline, the lack of any spines in Republicans, etc.
Over the weekend they have been putting up clips of Nikki hitting Trump and even Republicans overspending!!
They have the videos for each of these.
“Haley says she doubts Trump’s mental cognition: @realDonaldTrump is clearly confused”
“Haley: In the 2024 appropriations budget, Republicans put in $7.4 billion worth of pet projects and earmarks. Democrats put in $2.8 billion. Now you tell me who the big spenders are”
“Rep. Pappas: Voters are rejecting a national abortion ban, but you still have Republicans saying they would support one. Democrats stand for a woman’s right to choose. Republicans cheered on the Dobbs decision that ripped away abortion rights and want to go further”
He is doing a great job getting his message out to the youngsters who do not read or follow the MSM. Better than Trump is.

A lot of grocers around here have special bins for meat that is close to expiration with reduced prices on them. It’s the first place I hit when I do my main grocery shopping. I sometimes end up with pieces that are way too big and I have to play butcher to get the portions to reasonable sizes and then into my freezer but it’s worth it.

Another trick I learned - from making friends with the butcher: the top sirloin cap steak. Around holidays, everyone wanted a top sirloin roast. To make this, the butchers remove the Top Sirlon Cap, a cut that has not been popular in the US. So the butchers end up with a whole bunch of these cuts and really few who would buy them. People were ignorant of what they were and did not like the way they looked.
But it is a great cut that, if treated properly, is my favorite steak. There are so many things you can do with them. So I could often negotiate a reasonable price for the 2-3 pound cut that I could divide and freeze. I came to love Christmas. More people know about them now but the butchers still do the same thing they did then - they will hide the steaks and then take them home for themselves if no one buys them

The military admitted that there is nothing that can be done to withhold Mello’s benefits from her as it’s protected under a federal law that was held up in government bureaucracy.
“The command has no authority to impact Ms. Mello’s retirement,” an Army spokesperson told the San Antonio Express-News.

A long time ago I visited the Wallace Monument, a tower near Stirling. At the top of the tower was a museum which housed Wallace’s actual sword. Well, when I say, his “actual sword” it’s entirely possible it wasn’t his sword. Or maybe it was one of his swords. Or the sort of sword he would have wielded during one of his battles, or maybe it was a more modern replica of the sort of sword he might have wielded. I recall part of the exhibition was a receipt for the sword on display getting repaired back in the 1700s since the grip had degraded. Assuming the receipt was actually for the sword on display and not another sword entirely. Maybe.
Oh, and IIRC it wasn’t actually a claymore (claidheam-hmor or “great sword”), it was the sort of sword carried by equestrian nobility of Norman descent like Wallace and his contemporary, Robert the Bruce (de Bruys).

And now the latest from the Soviet Jesus Republic Of Oklahoma
Are we about to see Twitter (or “X”) pulled from Oklahoma? A new Senate Bill introduced by a Republican politician is so strict on distributing “unlawful” material that it might just force Twitter to close up shop in the state—or significantly restrict the kind of content available on the site.
This bill follows a recent North Carolina law that significantly impacted access to adult websites across the state. But Oklahoma’s new bill could be even further reaching than North Carolina’s controversial legislation. Here’s what you need to know about Oklahoma’s bill, and whether it could change the way citizens access Twitter.
What is Oklahoma’s S.B. 1976?
Set to be introduced on February 5, 2024, Oklahoma’s Senate Bill 1976 significantly emboldens the state’s restrictions on accessing and distributing material with sexual content. The law creates a new category, “unlawful pornography,” defined as “any visual depiction or individual image,” “play,” or “performance” portraying a wide range of sexually explicit acts.
These include “sexual intercourse which is normal or perverted,” “anal sodomy,” “sadomasochistic abuse,” “physical restraint such as binding or fettering in the context of sexual conduct,” oral sex, and the “lewd exhibition of the uncovered genitals, buttocks, or, if such person is female, the breast, for the purpose of sexual stimulation of the viewer.”
Under the bill, Oklahoma would ban the distribution of virtually any material that displays explicit sexual content if it lacks “serious literary, artistic, educational, political, or scientific purposes or value.” Additionally, Oklahoma would empower any citizen to open a lawsuit against an individual who “produces or distributes unlawful pornography” and/or “knowingly engages in conduct that aids or abets the production or distribution of unlawful pornography.”
“It appears to make viewing any sexually explicit or pornographic material illegal,” Sex Workers Outreach Project, a sex workers’ aid and advocacy organization, tweeted.
S.B. 1976 would certainly make it illegal for any Oklahoma resident to distribute “unlawful pornography,” unless the participants in question are married and sending each other sexts. But the addition of the word “view” to the bill has left much room for interpretation.
Violating this section would result in a county jail imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of no less than $2,000, or some mixture of both a fine and jail time. In other words, S.B. 1976 would threaten porn viewers, adult illustrators, sex workers creating adult content for OnlyFans, voice actors starring in lewd content, and even brick-and-mortar bookstores that offer material deemed to be “unlawfully” pornographic in nature.
If Oklahoma’s bill passes, its impact would be tremendous. Distributing porn would become illegal in the state. Material depicting sexual content between queer and trans individuals could be outlawed from bookstores because of the legal risk attached. It seems likely that Oklahoma Republicans would hunt down queer books and pull them from store shelves under such a law, given even brief depictions of queer sex in Gender Queer resulted in claims of the work being “pornographic” in nature. After all, in Virginia, conservatives already actively tried to ban Gender Queer from sale for this exact reason, while also targeting Sarah J. Maas’ YA fantasy work for its age-appropriate depictions of sex

That isn’t exactly what ending Chevron deference will do. Currently courts defer to regulatory agencies interpretation of ambiguous legislation; ending Chevron means the courts will impose the interpretation they prefer, based on the individual judge’s or Justices’ ideological preference. So regulatory agencies will still be able to regulate, but they will be subjected to a lot more second guessing by judges.

NYT: Trump could run a back door nationwide abortion ban. It’s an oped, but everyone following Trumpworld and the fascist misogynistic GOP knows the GOP intends to criminalize abortion and reduce women to second class status by any means necessary.
Also NYT: Current generation of teens anxious about future and disillusioned by politicians. A both sides claim, while all of the evidence points to just GOPers trying to deny women and girls bodily autonomy and GOP stripping civil rights from people, while Democrats keep trying to expand and protect civil rights. GOP blocks any reasonable gun regulations, while Democrats want to try and protect kids from gun violence.
On and on, but the both sides argument wont die, because it’s what the Times and others need to keep going to pursue the horse race for November, when there should be no argument at all between Trump (the frontrunning fascist seditious treasonweasel under the GOP banner) and Biden (the incumbent who gets slammed by pundits for every bit of good news about the economy and especially because of his age).

Negotiators - a bipartisan Senate deal on immigration has been reached.
“We are sort of finalizing the last pieces of text right now. This bill could be ready to be on the floor of the United States Senate next week. But it won’t be if Republicans decide that they want to keep this issue unsettled for political purposes,” the Connecticut Democrat added.
Murphy said he was pleased to see President Joe Biden support the emerging deal. Biden cited the compromise at a campaign rally Saturday, saying he would shut down the US southern border if given the authority - an embrace of policies far more draconian than those he’s previously considered.
“I was glad to hear the president come out and speak forcefully in favor of this bill. I’m hopeful that we will still have enough Republicans in the Senate who want to fix the problem at the border rather than just to do Donald Trump’s bidding, but we will see over the next 24 to 48 hours whether that’s true,” Murphy said.
Trump wants this blocked.
House GOP will sabotage the effort, undermining US national security and immigration in the process. They’ll do so not because they have a plan or a solution, but because they need to maintain the illusion of a crisis ad infinitum. Trump and the GOP have repeatedly had chances to enact immigration reform and ignored or refused to do so. Trump built a few miles of new wall, revamped a few more miles, and otherwise shirked his responsibilities. We paid for all that - not Mexico. So, it is with the rest of the obstructionist GOP. They don’t have any solutions - other than a final one of deporting all the undesirables.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again: The American capitalist system is predicated on the ability of business owners to exploit people at some point (perhaps multiple points) down the line.
The use of prison labor, paying undocumented immigrants low wages, employing teenagers who can be paid less (and likely don’t know their rights) or use of foreign sweatshops to manufacture goods are only a few examples.
The only way the folks at the top can be rich are if the folks on the bottom are taken advantage of.

Early-onset dementia symptoms in five adults may be connected to a now-discontinued human growth hormone medical treatment that they received decades ago as children, a new study suggests. The study, published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine, provides the first reported evidence of medically acquired Alzheimer’s disease in living people. In these cases, the patients’ early-onset dementia symptoms may be the result of the possible transmission of amyloid beta protein, which is a key component of Alzheimer’s disease when it forms plaques in the brain.
Abnormal buildup of the protein amyloid beta in the brain is associated with Alzheimer’s and the new study suggests that amyloid beta contamination may have a connection with the early dementia symptoms experienced by the patients in the study. The study findings do not suggest that Alzheimer’s disease can be contagious, or spread like viral or bacterial infections, for instance, but they raise new questions about Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases.
There is little doubt who will win the El Salvador presidential election when voters go to the polls on Feb. 4, 2024.Incumbent Nayib Bukele has the initiative heading into the vote, having made a series of eye-catching decisions since coming to power in 2019, such as making bitcoin legal tender, issuing policy through social media, and most significantly, declaring a nationwide “state of emergency” in response to gang violence.
The Bitcoin experiment has all but failed. But that hasn’t dented his prospects of victory.
The reason: A majority of Salvadorans feel safer than they have in years. Under Bukele’s authoritarian rule, the homicide rate has officially decreased, many street vendors no longer pay a gang tax, and taxi drivers aren’t as worried about hijackings or assault. And that has led to Bukele’s widespread popularity across the country. In an early January 2024 poll, the incumbent was ahead by 71%. He is, in other words, a shoo-in.
But this sense of safety has come at a cost. Bukele’s program to curb crime has led to an erosion of civil rights - tens of thousands of people have been detained in a crackdown on organized crime, with those imprisoned subjected to overcrowding and alleged human rights abuses, including torture.
Critics also point to the breakdown of democratic checks and balances across government since Bukele first took office. He replaced members of the judiciary with allies, and he is running for president again despite constitutional law banning a second consecutive presidential term.
So when Salvadorans cast their votes, they’ll be faced with the question: Is the short-term security Bukele is offering worth the serious backslide on democracy taking place in El Salvador?
El Salvador voters set to trade democracy for promise of security in presidential election (The Conversation)

That’s a long way down, but not impossible for modern ROVs. I agree; send one down and check it out. Closing the book on one of the most famous aviation accidents of all time would be a major find.

He actually believes stocks are up because he’s polling well. 🤦♂️
They can’t have anything to do with the sitting President (unless he himself is the Prez)
re: #356 darthstar
Oh, It’s not just the 48 million dollars in unclaimed income…Trump could be out close to a billion…

That he doesn’t have.

He loves to take credit for good things he didn’t do. And bad things? Somebody else’s fault.

You walk away of your own accord, you lose all claim.
The fact that is not immediately obvious tells us a lot about how much this is all grandstanding and posturing.
Not to mention loss of the money earned from military bases, national parks, and other federal offices, money for roads and bridges, and funds for schools (probably not an issue since they want to get rid of public schools, anyway). Then there are costs associated with being part of air traffic control, funds for airports.
In short, billions and billions of reasons.

Nikki Haley just got some more ammo to use against him…let’s see if she does.

Exactly. If they could check out the wreck of the Sammy B., they can check this one out as well.

Every win means trump is involved and responsible. Any failures is on anyone else.
Honestly, this fucking guy. 🙄
re: #354 Shropshire Slasher
Well, they did pay for it.
Texas seceding means us citizens here will no longer be Americans. So, a lot of things go away.
You know who else pays into Social Security and doesn’t get to draw from it? Immigrants.

But it’ll be much easier to build a wall along the Oklahoma border.

Texit. Just like Brexit. How’s that working out for the UK.
Later Texas. You need the US way more than we need your seditious bullshit.
(Sorry TX lizards. Honestly I am sorry.)
re: #357 Joe Bacon ✅
Answer—it depends.
If you are in a “barred payment country” per US Treasury directive, no.
Yeah, that will be a prestigious list to get onto:
- North Korea
- Cuba
- Iran
- Myanmar
- Republic of Texas

He lies about everything; not a word from his mouth can be trusted.
I posted a link to this recently; article from 2017:
Most every journalist who covers Trump knows of these things:
1. He isn’t good at anything a president has to do. From the simplest, like pretending to help out in flood relief, to the hardest: making the call when all alternatives are bad. (We’re told he can be charming one-on-one. So maybe that’s his one skill.)
2. He doesn’t know anything about the issues with which he must cope. Nor does this seem to bother him.
3. He doesn’t care to learn. It’s not like he’s getting better at the job, or scrambling to fill gaps in his knowledge.
4. He has no views about public policy. Just a few brute prejudices, like if Obama did it, it was dumb. I do not say he lacks beliefs — and white supremacy may be one — but he has no positions. His political sky is blank. No stars to steer by.
5. Nothing he says can be trusted.
6. His “model” of leadership is the humiliation of others— and threat of same. No analyst unfamiliar with narcissistic personality types can hope to make sense of his actions in office.
re: #382 Hecuba’s daughter
His one big skill is lying convincingly to his marks and they believe the baffling bulkshit he spews.
re: #382 Hecuba’s daughter
Look at his reaction to Covid:
At first, frozen like a deer in the headlights because he saw the economy that was supposed to buoy him to re-election in peril.
So he denied it and played it down and when it became too big to ignore, he lacked the ability to assemble a team of competent people and to let them do their job.
People will rally around a leader even during an economic crisis, if the leader is showing leadership and resolve and showing the people that he cares about their plight and is working hard to mitigate it.
DJT is incapable of any of that, instead he spent his time whining about unfreindly governors, shunting blame for failures onto others, contradicting his experts, ignoring their advice and going on about butt bleach and worm cures.
In the end of ends, had it not been for Covid, the bastard would probably still be President.

But there are a lot of marks, even before he became president, and even people that should know better (i.e., counter parties in various Trump deals). It would appear Trump is a natural-born swindler, with a corresponding talent for fraud.
re: #384 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
If that miserable piece of shit had died from covid, it would have saved us all a lot of trouble.
re: #386 EPR-radar
And Pence would likely have won reelection (because all of the Trumpists would have been gone and Pence installed his own toadies/cronies).
Maybe.

You know what else will go away if Texas secedes? 40 Republican electoral votes.

Not only could Trump not assemble a competent team of his own, he expended a lot of energy (and greenlit his toadies) to kneecap and sideline competent Fed career employees and subject matter experts, like Dr. Fauci.

The CDC actually had a team at Wuhan, but Trump disbanded it in 2018. Because it was Obama who put it there, so TFG decided it was an obvious waste of money and they could be called back into service if circumstances required. Oops.
