Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), who is running for Senate against Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), told Valley News Live suggested that the sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh are not disqualifying “even if it’s all true.”
Said Cramer: “Even if it’s all true, does it disqualify him? It certainly means that he did something really bad 36 years ago, but does it disqualify him from the Supreme Court?”

It’s amazing how this same party also opposes allowing felons who have served their time to vote but that also thinks that even if this is true that Augh should join SCOTUS. I’m really tired of Kavanaugh and the non stop excuses being made for him. Just withdraw all ready you functioning drunk asshole.
re: #3 Charles Johnson

A con game, you say? Nah that sounds more like the people over eager to describe Kavanaugh as this boy scout who never had sex in high school and in college and who didn’t drink. Fucking asshole. Gah it was just last week when the Post was praising his “restraint” on Ford. Goddamn I hate these guys.
It ignores of course, the truism-‘if he did it once, what would have stopped him from doing it again?’ I mean he never had any repercussions, maybe not even criticism for his actions. And with people willing to cover for him even if his victim happened to complain, what would make him stop? Indeed we should be asking if he ever stopped or when did he stop. Yes, as an adult, things are a bit more complicated, but still….
I’m at the point where I’m wondering if there’s a dead body somewhere mixed up in this. Seriously, given the methodology of what happened to Ford, it’s preplanned and deliberate, and when it is, things escalate. I’d wonder about those “teenage accidents” in their circle and take a second look.
One more thing, why must it be this guy anyway? There are certainly more people who don’t have shady backgrounds who would qualify for the Court. And why so fast? Trump is still going to be President after the midterms, and still be a Republican. The religious right will still get their judge-a little more principled, but still mostly on their side of the fence.

You know, Kavanaugh’s team and statements would be more credible if they weren’t overzealous to act like he was this great guy in HS. A lot of the defenses I’ve seen of him “Well he’s not the same person he was then”, may well be but he’s acting like he WAS this perfect angel in high school and college. I’m sorry but the evidence that we’ve seen shows a young man who did not respect women or know how to hold his booze. Is it enough in a court of law to convict? At this moment, no but is it enough to deny him a LIFELONG appointment where he’d be ruling on law for easily the next quarter century, fuck yes. And he’s got other issues too.
If the Avenatti allegations are actually true, it is understandable that no women who were subject to these attacks will come forward; it would embarrass them today and make their lives today a living nightmare. How will they face their offspring, colleagues, and spouses? Because of the atrocious double standard that remains in force today, only a man who subsequently developed a conscience might be willing to testify, a woman would be branded a slut.

I think their is much more going on here than just Trump stuff. RBG (IIRC) has been banging this double-jeopardy drum for a while. Basically state prosecutors offer plea deals to get people to plead guilty, then hand the case to the feds so they don’t have to abide by the plea deal.

Here’s the thing, I don’t necessarily disagree with Hatch on this. There is an issue of preemption and whether allowing a state government to go after someone after a federal pardon (or even arguably, the other way around), fits with the goals of the constitution.
Yes, Trump would be likely to abuse the power, because he’s Trump. But that’s why we (at least in theory) have the check of impeachment and removal for when a president so blatantly abuses his power.
Ultimately, this goes to the legal issue where we recognize not only the federal government as sovereign but also the states. Though our history, we have curtailed the sovereignty of the states more and more, and this is likely just another step in that direction.

One problem is that State and Federal offenses aren’t necessarily similarly worded but as we saw with Ford’s pardon of Nixon pardons can be worded is such an incredibly broad fashion as to literally cover all conceivable offenses. So it’s insane to remove the one effectively check on that power that States have. It’s also not hard to imagine someone like Trump using this power to sanction and immunize violations of State and local election laws, and even if he didn’t the fact that he could is simply destroys any pretense of States’ Rights over their own internal dealings.
I see nothing about Trump that suggests he understands our documents and governing principles as a representative Republic. Of course, he knows things like the Declaration, Constitution, or Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and what they are but I doubt he knows what they really mean. If you asked Trump to explain an important SCOTUS case, he couldn’t do it. He wouldn’t be able to explain to you why the concept of separation of powers is so vital to our system of government. And I guess that’s actually to his advantage with his supporters because they don’t either.
re: #64 Hecuba’s daughter

It’s a dumb argument imho. There would have been no justice at all in the Rodney King beating case if the Feds hadn’t come in and charged the officers separately with violating his civil rights. Also, as we saw with Ford / Nixon pardons can be issued preemptively, before any actual jeopardy has been experienced.

The problem is that the drinking age in MD increased to 21 when Kavanaugh was 17. He was too young when the new law passed to be grandfathered in for legal drinking during his senior year. Seniors from previous years who were already 18 could have drunk legally, but not Kavanaugh!
This is a ridiculous unnecessary lie. After all, teenagers have been evading this law for decades. He could have just said that he was a normal teenager and apologized for ignoring the rules. The fact that he felt compelled to lie about something so unimportant shows his total disregard for the truth. No wonder Trump loves him
re: #92 BlueGrl21
Man, I know i may be getting a bit bloodthirsty when I’m pissed an 81 year-old man is only getting 3-10 years in prison for rape…for this case, there are 60 other women that have come forward and accused him of sexual assault, up to and including rape.
I know all of the practicalities of the legal system, statute of imitations, etc. I don’t much care. I want blood.
This thing with Kavanaugh is not making me feel hopeless. It’s turning me into a Valkyrie.
Yeah it does seem way too light. I don’t believe in taking in to account a defendant’s age when it’s a crime like rape or murder. Violent crime is violent crime. And as you get at, Cosby had many many accusers. I hope the Kavanaugh thing ends with him having to resign his seat in shame but then I’m afraid we’d get stuck with him going the victim route on FNC but at least he wouldn’t be in power to rule on law.
re: #92 BlueGrl21
At Cosbys age, 3-10 years may effectively be a life sentence.

He has such a difficult relationship with the truth. I honestly figured it was 18 when he was 17 and that in part explained why he was going away from Bethesda for parties because you know, the people at the stores in your home area may recognize you but 10 iles away probably not.
re: #97 Eclectic Cyborg

It might well be but in this case I really think the punishment should fit the crime. Something like bad checks? Yeah go easy on the old bastard but this?
I made a giant mistake today.
I often check in on the right-wing websites, just to see what they’re screeching about, and I figured it’d be interesting to go there to see What Fresh Hell would be coming out of the mouths of the goons on Fox. Predictable DARVO shit; the mean old Dems are the abusers, poor little Kavanaugh is the REAL victim in all this, yada yada…
And then I went to 8chan, and it turns out that the sickos there are writing porno slashfic about Kavanaugh and pals gang-raping girls.
I just refuse to see why Kavanaugh is credible. His accusers haven’t denied that they drank. But Kav’s gone all out to paint himself as this altar boy type who was only into God, Sports, and School and I’m sorry but that’s such bs by the evidence we have.

once again - running faster than the law— getting away with it is neither exoneration nor a gift or an opportunity to turn your life around or whatever
it is evading capture and prosecution
I always think about a similiar metric when I see the old Nazi criminals. The attempts “Hey he’s an old man, leave him alone.” And I just think about the men, women, and children who never lived to grow old, have kids/grandkids, or to quote W.B. Yeats “comb gray hair.” He had his life. There are some things that I think can be forgiven but some things justice needs to be eternal. And hell I still want to know who murdered my second great grandfather and why. Don’t want them on trial mind you lol.

Their view is that white men must be exempt from any repercussions for bad behavior as teenagers or during college. And any girl who was intoxicated deserved it anyway. Boasting of conquests is fine when you are a man.
Remember — a vast majority of white voters in Alabama were totally on board with Roy Moore; and it was white voters (especially men) who voted for and still support Trump. If we don’t get a huge turnout among the young and minority population in November, it’s the end of the run for America.

You could never believe a photo because they’ve been manipulated in darkrooms from the start. Now video is just as easily manipulated.

Is there any possibility of Lisa switching parties? After all, she won in 2010 as a write-in.
I don’t think she will switch parties. But, she could be beaten if there’s not a 3 way race in the election. She ran as a write-in because Tea Party candidate Joe miller beat her in the primary. She lost the primary because she was very complacent and thought the Republican nomination was hers because of her birthright. (Remember her Daddy was both Governor and Senator.) The result was a 3 way race with her being a write-in candidate, Joe Miller the Republican nominee, and the little known Democrat Mayor of Sitka. It was the Native groups who got out the vote for her to win. Right now, the Native groups have strongly told her that Kavanough is a no go. She will need the Natives to run again in 2022. And the Natives have long memories.

More likely it is just shitty routes. Snopes is hosted on AWS and a traceroute for me takes 23 hops to get there. Fox news is hosted at akamai and a traceroute only took 8 hops. You are on a different network, different backbone you’ll get different results, but I doubt snopes has enough traffic for anyone to bother throttling them.

GOP Senate Candidate Who Said ‘Women Are Here To Cook My Dinner’ Loses In Missouri
GOP Senate candidate Courtland Sykes, the man who claims women should be “traditional homemakers,” loses in Missouri.
Sykes lost his bid for the party nomination to Missouri’s Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley. Republican Hawley will now face Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in a race that may decide which party will control the U.S. Senate.
Sykes made headlines earlier this year after remarks he made concerning women went viral. Sykes, a fervent Trump supporter who billed himself as “MAGA’s Boldest All-Republican Warrior,” articulated his ultra-conservative position on women’s rights in a statement posted to Facebook, a statement which Sykes has since deleted.
In the statement, Sykes said:
I want to come home to a home cooked dinner every night at six. One that she (his fiance) fixes and one that I expect one day to have daughters learn to fix after they become traditional homemakers and family wives.
The GOP senate candidate said he didn’t want daughters to grow up as:

I would argue that the most racist ones were the trials that didn’t happen at all. You know, they just showed up after dark at your house, drug you out by your feet and hung you from the nearest tree or just beat you until dead.

If I was Dr. Ford, I’d preface every answer with ‘As I’d say to the male members of the committee, had they shown enough courage to question me themselves…’
I’d say “Which Senator gave you this question?” and then address my reply to the Senator.
re: #147 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis
You could never believe a photo because they’ve been manipulated in darkrooms from the start. Now video is just as easily manipulated.
You could never manipulate a film-based photo the way you can now with digital image editing like Photoshop.
There was always something in the image that gave away the manipulation. You either had hard edge “cut” lines, or some kind of brushed or drawn-in modifications that looked fake to a good discerning eye.
And to find someone real good to pull of a decent film/print fake photo would take a lot of money because they had to be that good.
I was never at that high a level, but I used to do photo retouching and was pretty good at it, but you could always tell if you knew what to look for.
Take the Kennedy autopsy images that have long been in contention. They are considered to be good fakes, maybe done by the CIA or some other government agency. You can tell the fake areas if you look closely. But they were good enough to create a heck of a conspiracy. And in some ways, they also created controversy because of their bad elements.
Today, it would be real hard to tell. And the Zapruder Film…that could be done anyway you want now.

Thursday is gonna be an absolute shitshow.
Crud. We have a staff meeting during the hearing. Guess I’ll have the hearing in one ear and the staff meeting in the other.
re: #95 Hecuba’s daughter
This is a ridiculous unnecessary lie. After all, teenagers have been evading this law for decades. He could have just said that he was a normal teenager and apologized for ignoring the rules. The fact that he felt compelled to lie about something so unimportant shows his total disregard for the truth. No wonder Trump loves him
the problem is that kavanaugh is at heart a fundamentalist, with a fundamentalist’s view of the world. And the problem for fundamentalists is that they’re really just unbelievably bad Scholastics. They not only believe that the world’s brickwork is unmoveable and unflexible: they build their walls such that no single piece can be removed without the whole thing coming down, and it doesn’t matter if the removed piece is from the top or the bottom. So, for example, if Kavanaugh admits that he was involved cavalierly in illegal activity, it means he suddenly is open to charges involving all sorts of additional cavalier illegality, like trying to gang rape a 15 year old and only failing at it because he was literally too fucking drunk to perform.

I hadn’t thought of that. I was more along the lines of she should ask after each question, “Which committee member asked that question?”.

GMTA, and I like the addressing the member directly.

The two I’ve met say it like “Soshi”
I know I’m way late, but in Nahuatl, this should be pronounced “Sho-chee-tl”. The “tl” is an unvoiced alveolar lateral, meaning you put the tip of your tongue against your back teeth as for “t”, but you keep it there and the air escapes to the sides when released.
