Don’t call it welfare though.

USDA announces more eligible commodities for Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link)

I’ll bet a large portion of these farmers and ranchers around the nation will vote for the same conservatives destroying their farms and ranches though. Plus, if a Democrat did this right before an election, Republicans and the press would be howling to the rafters about “pandering.”

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced today that additional commodities are covered by the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) in response to public comments and data. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is extending the deadline to apply for the program to September 11, and producers with approved applications will receive their final payment. After reviewing over 1,700 responses, even more farmers and ranchers will have the opportunity for assistance to help keep operations afloat during these tough times.

and

Specialty Crops - aloe leaves, bananas, batatas, bok choy, carambola (star fruit), cherimoya, chervil (french parsley), citron, curry leaves, daikon, dates, dill, donqua (winter melon), dragon fruit (red pitaya), endive, escarole, filberts, frisee, horseradish, kohlrabi, kumquats, leeks, mamey sapote, maple sap (for maple syrup), mesculin mix, microgreens, nectarines, parsley, persimmons, plantains, pomegranates, pummelos, pumpkins, rutabagas, shallots, tangelos, turnips/celeriac, turmeric, upland/winter cress, water cress, yautia/malanga, and yuca/cassava.

Non-Specialty Crops and Livestock - liquid eggs, frozen eggs and all sheep. Only lambs and yearlings (sheep less than two years old) were previously eligible.

Aquaculture - catfish, crawfish, largemouth bass and carp sold live as foodfish, hybrid striped bass, red drum, salmon, sturgeon, tilapia, trout, ornamental/tropical fish, and recreational sportfish.

Nursery Crops and Flowers - nursery crops and cut flowers.

Other changes to CFAP include:

Seven commodities - onions (green), pistachios, peppermint, spearmint, walnuts and watermelons - are now eligible for Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Stability (CARES) Act funding for sales losses. Originally, these commodities were only eligible for payments on marketing adjustments.

Correcting payment rates for onions (green), pistachios, peppermint, spearmint, walnuts, and watermelons.

Omaha Police Department revises policy on mass arrests of protesters, mayor says (Omaha World-Herald)

They must now detail the specific crime before arresting a person.

The Omaha Police Department has revised its policy on arresting protesters after a controversial mass arrest and detention of more than 100 people during a peaceful protest in July.

“After there was a mass arrest of about 120 on the bridge (on) Farnam Street several weeks ago, I asked (Police) Chief (Todd) Schmaderer and he did really revise their policy for the police on mass arrests,” Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said Tuesday.

Wyoming is predicting a $1.5 billion shortfall in revenue for the state, due to depressed travel and falling coal and oil sales due to the pandemic.

Mayors across the state urged lawmakers to consider an array of tax rises to straighten out the state budget.

The supermajority Republican legislature rejected every tax proposal,

I would note my village of 124 has more money in the bank than the Wyoming state capital (60,000).

Who could have predicted? Oh, anyone who isn’t part of the conservative faith.

A Sidney High School student was identified recently as positive with the COVID-19 virus.

The announcement was made in a press release issued by the Sidney School District 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The press release states the Sidney Public Schools received confirmation of high school student positive with COVID-19. The press release says the student was last in the building on Monday, Aug. 17. Jessica Davies, Assistant Health Director and Wellness Coordinator of Panhandle Public Health District, said the student has been instructed to self-isolate for 10 days.

Sidney School Superintendent Jay Ehler this morning (Aug. 19) encouraged everyone to stay positive.

“As we work through this Pandemic and learn to manage the situations that come our way, it is important that we all maintain a caring and understanding attitude,” Ehler said in a written statement.

Hurricane Laura is becoming a dangerous hurricane.

Satellite data indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased
to near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts. Laura is forecast to
become a category 4 hurricane today, and is expected to be a major
hurricane at landfall. Rapid weakening is expected after Laura
makes landfall.

Laura is becoming a large hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend
outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-
force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km).

A real bloodbath — that’s what will happen. The police will be delighted to shoot armed protesters and the public will support them. Police murdered Tamir Rice without consequences and murdered Philando Castile without consequences; they will certainly be able to kill armed protesters, especially those who are black, without any consequences. It won’t be treated as self-defense. The situations are not symmetric. The police are allied with Trump and this is what Trump wants to see. He’s been fomenting riots and is delighted with this distraction from his killing of 180,000 Americans.

The original civil rights movement succeeded in getting the CRA and the VRA because the violence was all on the side of the authorities. To get progress — it’s the police that have to be shown to be the ones clearly violating the law.

The most powerful tool in the toolbox is the vote. The second-most powerful is to sue Kenosha, Wisc. into the ground. Hundreds of millions of dollars. Make the taxpayers bleed money for their police riot tonight.

Police departments which are out-of-control are most effectively controlled when the taxpayers get tired of funding multi-million dollar lawsuits.

Voters also need to be educated on never voting to approve general municipal bonds (which can be used to pay out police misconduct suits). All bonds must detail a specific purpose or be rejected.

When you make the taxpayers bleed enough money, they will reform the police by getting rid of spineless city councils which refuse to reform them.

Well, wingnuts have about a million excuses why the first clause of the II Amendment doesn’t really mean anything, such as:

Well-regulated means keeping a firearm in working order.
The first clause is an introductory clause which has no force (special pleading over all the other amendments)
Militias were traditionally groups of citizens who could muster with firearms (never mind in the early days of the nation militias were actually trained by states or the military)
Arms means firearms (never mind the XVIII Century definition of “arms” was an organised government military force, which is real inconvenient for so-called originalists)

That said, the National Hurricane Center advises against focusing on the future track, because error increases the further out you predict.

A wobble of ten or twenty miles now will throw the hurricane well outside the strike cone. A wobble to the west will put it right over Houston.

Interestingly, there was a Black Lives Matter protest in Scottsbluff. There was no police riot, no violence from right-wingers, not even a counter-protest.

The protest organisers worked with both the Scott’s Bluff Sheriff’s Department and the Scottsbluff Police Department to give them the time and route, the aim of the protest, sought a parade permit from the City of Scottsbluff, had parade marshals on hand to ensure people stayed both on-message and on the prescribed protest route, invited the media (the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, local radio and television outlets, &c).

The protest march lasted about three hours with no property damage, violence, or arrests.

Meanwhile over in Omaha, protests over the killing of George Floyd had the police kettle 120 protestors on a bridge and arrest everyone.

I don’t get why some protests go well, with the protestors getting their message out, and others wind up with a police/right-wing/fascist riot.

That could be. I don’t ever remember a protest march in Scottsbluff before.

The most unusual thing that ever occurred there since I moved here was the start of the annual Pride Day Picnic in Gering (which also gets police protection).

Despite every local politician in the area denouncing it (except me, I attend every year, though I don’t make a deal of it since Pride events aren’t about me), Gering and Scottsbluff seem pretty calm about it. (The organisers decided that for this area, a welcome-all picnic is a better display than a parade down Broadway in Scottsbluff.)

No wingnuts with guns, no protests from churches, none of that.

Another thing I’ve been pondering in my easily triggered mind is how in some ways the Louise Mensch crowd was a kind of version of Qanon (without the anon) for the left in 2016 and early 2017. I got suckered for a couple of weeks. But it wasn’t long before the bizarre stories they told were proven to be mostly fantasy with just enough plausibility to draw people not thinking rationally into the narrative of boxes of sealed indictments and Sergeant-at-Arms about to break down doors and haul people away. While most of us sobered up some and realized the scam it was, it left this fissure in which doubts about Russian involvement could be called a hoax and a lot of people then went to that extreme. We live in a bizarre world of constantly competing claims, some backed by evidence, many fueled by hope or confidence that what we want to be true is indeed true. I hate this world this morning. Getting to work today and focusing on that will be my true respite.

I’ll check back later today. TTFN.

Her accent really isn’t that bad, all things considered. Hell, at times she seems to have a better grip on the English language than Donny does. The problem is that she couldn’t be more a walking stereotype of a trophy wife if she tried.

She should concentrate on her inspiring immigration story about how she came and worked here illegally as a nude model on a tourist visa and then had her family come and join her…

I don’t have any problem with the nude model part. It’s the immigration/unlawful work part I have a problem with (and the so-called chain migration of her family whilst the GOP condemns chain migration). Her father being a former Communist Party member in his native country should have invited close scrutiny before admittance.

My sister-in-law as a former member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union took over a decade of scrutiny before she was permitted to become a citizen of the USA. (As an immunologist working for the Soviet government, membership in the CPSU was required.)

According to her spokeswoman yesterday, it’s not about bullying, it’s about “protecting kids on the Internet.” The difference (of course) is the former implies that giving her husband a pass as a cyber-bully looks bad, but the latter lets her continue to make excuses for why she doesn’t hold his saggy ass to a higher standard.

Ezra Klein(vox): “The problem for Republicans is that the main thing Trump has told them to support is himself. There are no detailed policy proposals, much less a coherent ideology or set of governing principles. And so speech after speech followed the same template: How was America going to stop the coronavirus? By reelecting Donald Trump. How was it going to revive its economy? By reelecting Donald Trump. How was it going to ensure domestic harmony? By reelecting Donald Trump.”

“The contradiction at the heart of the convention, of course, is that Donald Trump is currently president. I’m dead serious. How would reelecting Trump resolve these crises that Trump has proven unable to resolve — and has, in many cases, worsened — in office? No one even took a shot at that Rubik’s cube. Instead, the speakers awkwardly talked around the fact of Trump’s incumbency. He was presented, strangely, as both incumbent and challenger; the man who had fixed America’s problems, but also the man needed to fix an America beset by more problems than ever

How can you be cancelled when you never were? This snaggletoothed racist clown only got the spotlight when he was horribly racist and abusive to an elder Native American.

They have no trouble with cancelling the abuses that took place under slavery: serial rape, beatings, family separation.

Nor do they have any trouble cancelling treason; seceding from and taking up arms against their own country, or in cancelling any memories of Jim Crow, segregation and lynchings.

And what drives the RWNJ’s really nuts is when it’s pointed out that terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda, Islamic State, Boko Haram, etc., are pretty damn right wing (within the context of their cultures). So terrorist atrocities perpetrated by such groups could well be counted as right wing terrorism.

But the video cameras ensured the marchers (some died, more were injured) got the Voting Rights Act.

CRA happened before MLK’s assassination. (in fact, the two black leaders had their only meeting ever at the hearings for the bill.)Why? Fear of a real, credible, uprising. MLK’s path was more moderate.

The only reason FDR got what he did through congress in the 30s was fear of the whites going Commie. FDR’s path was more moderate.

The reason the British surrendered India was that after WWII there were more trained Indian men who would fight for India than for Britian. Again, they worked with the Face of Moderation.

Except it takes both. We need BOTH a modern Malcom X to give a serious threat of violence that will take down the enemy if necessary and a modern MLK to provide the nonviolent escape for society. It’s like having a sword and a shield; one must be able to fight and defend. Without that, you’ll be steamrolled.

She should concentrate on her inspiring immigration story about how she came and worked here illegally as a nude model on a tourist visa and then had her family come and join her…

See, that is the irrelevant slut-shaming bit.

And, by the way, since loads of members my family have also worked illegally on tourist visas, had members of their family come over and join them, and are now “productive” members of society I can’t get worked up about what she did. Now, the hypocrisy and racism, that is annoying.

Now we find out that it was 558 text messages in 27 days, plus physical contact (eg hugs and a kiss) towards a woman who is so junior to him that she made half his salary.

Coronavirus cases linked to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally found in 8 states
nbcnews.com

So far.

Trump’s CDC is now calling for less testing of asymptomatic persons. They’re going to make the pandemic worse because people aren’t testing. Sturgis was a superspreader event. Trump will fixate on fewer cases (20% down from peak), all while the death toll keeps churning out 1,000+ a day. Trump’s stooge Kudlow, who isn’t a health expert (or an expert), is acting like this crisis is something in the past, but the reality is that this isn’t going away and we’re going to continue seeing massive ongoing death toll from Trump’s refusal to treat this as a crisis.

The economy is bouncing back as states reopen, but we are down significantly from before February. The economy bouncing back is despite Trump, not because of him. The economy collapsed because of Trump, not despite him. It fell further, the crisis was worse, and the damage done was more severe because of Trump. His failures are manifest.

The police didn’t protect people on the Edmund Pettus Bridge either.

But the video cameras ensured the marchers (some died, more were injured) got the Voting Rights Act.

ETA: just imagine the backlash those protesters would have faced, how many more would have died, the increased repression their communities would have faced going forward, how much longer it would have taken for any of their goals to be reached, if they’d been armed and tried to fight back.

I’d say zero, actually. Repression was already at max.

“When you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over?” Trump said, miming the physical motion of an officer shielding a suspect’s head to keep it from bumping against the squad car.

“Like, don’t hit their head, and they just killed somebody — don’t hit their head,” Trump continued. “I said, you can take the hand away, okay?”

Omelas is especially resonant right now if you are white in this culture of ours where POC are demanding that before all lives matter, black lives must actually matter. The sound of gunfire on a daily basis tells the price of Omelas in the here and now … “whoever has ears, let them hear.”

When athletes knelt, the whole RW exploded in outrage and applauded Kaepernick being canceled. Trump wants to silence(cancel) all protest, unless he can use it to terrify the middle class into supporting his fascism. Unfortunately those rioting don’t see or understand that they are furthering Trump’s goals.

A few months before Floyd, I got into a dispute in the Women’s March Chicago FB group with someone who was attacking Biden; he eventually admitted to being a Communist. I dropped the discussion but now he is one of the leading proponents in the group for looting and encouraging BLM members into this behavior; I am certain he thinks that this will lead to a revolution that will overthrow capitalism and bring about utopia, instead of realizing that this will only bring about the hard fist of fascism and white supremacy. Of course, it’s also possible his group is getting its orders from Putin and wants the US to descend into chaos to further Putin’s plans..

What should be done is that the governor should call up the NG and have them replace every police officer in the state until new officers can be hired - including psych evals and TS level background checks - and trained. And yes, then pay the new cops appropriately.

We need to get back to the ideas that Robert Peel had in 1829 coming out of as bad a period of law enforcement as has ever happened:

What should be done is that the governor should call up the NG and have them replace every police officer in the state until new officers can be hired - including psych evals and TS level background checks - and trained. And yes, then pay the new cops appropriately.

We need to get back to the ideas that Robert Peel had in 1829 coming out of as bad a period of law enforcement as has ever happened:

[Embedded content]

Nice idea, but not practical, I think. NG people have regular jobs, mostly, and you can’t call them up for years. Plus they’re really not trained for police work either.

Finding the specific people who welcomed the killer and firing them would be a better start.

What’s your source on that one?

It gives point 7 as:

The police at all times should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police are the only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the intent of the community welfare.

Where other versions have:

To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence

Which is quite different. The official UK Home office version, “the police being only members of the public…” versus your source’s “the police are the only members of the public…”

Too bad the police union won’t be responsible for any judgments. It’s tax payers who fund these judgments for the cops’ misconduct.

That’s precisely the idea. If the voters put in craven politicians who will not stand up for the citizens of the community, then the community pays.

That’s what ultimately got rid of Sheriff Asshat in Phoenix. The voters got tired of payouts and criminality from their sheriff.

Towns can also sue police unions. Neither the towns nor its voters are helpless here. The people being murdered are.

Make the town bleed money. Bankrupt it.

That’s excising one cell and calling it a successful cancer operation. There are very very few cops worth keeping - they burn out quickly when faced with the inherent corruption.

To be sure it’s better than nothing in a sense but the reality is that they will never be held accountable. The only possible good to come out of this will be if the kid is sent to Waupun for life. The cops will laugh at the ‘n-words’ that got wacked and go on oppressing them every day in everyway possible. Yeah, I’ve known (and even trained MPs) a fair number of cops. I got an email today from my evil, too big to fail financial employer, telling me and everyone else who carries a financial institution-issued cell phone that as soon as our contracts end for those devices. we will have to Bring Your Own Device. Why? Because our ratio of company issued devices is too high and 81 percent of American adults own a personal smartphone.

To say that I am steamed is not an understatement. I thought I worked for a bank, not Uber. I’m on call as part of my job. I thought that provding a bank-issued cellphone was part of the deal. ‘Any patriots willing to take up arms and defend our city tonight from the evil thugs?’ asked the Facebook group.
The killing of two protestors in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday night may have emerged in response to a Facebook event posted by a self-described militia, which referred to the event as a “call to arms.”

The event was also promoted by Infowars, which posted a screenshot of the Facebook event listing. The listing is no longer publicly accessible but, reached on Facebook, the Kenosha Guard account confirmed to The Verge that the screenshots were authentic. The group’s Facebook page has also been taken down, but it boasted more than 3,000 members as of this morning.

Trying to disgust you is the only move the Republican convention’s antiabortion speakers have left, by Monica Hesse, WaPo

Hesse ordinarily covers women’s issues, and she smites them hip and thigh here. Not long, but every syllable is disgusted.

[Graham Lynch’s] entire speech was a coy way of saying, I want to have the freedom to discriminate against you.

But Abby Johnson and Cissy Graham Lynch made their positions perfectly clear: Their way of life is to police other people’s lives and call it freedom. Their way of life is to claim they are being oppressed if they are not allowed to oppress others. That is the way of life they’re trying to protect.
Abortion doesn’t have a smell. But my God, something at Tuesday night’s convention sure did.

Ok, found their version:

It’s clearly not the original, (though it’s mocked up to look old) and it’s the only version I can find that says “the only” instead of “only”. Well, apart from the bastardised version the LAPD use and I wouldn’t exactly accept them as experts on the subject of policing by consent!

Looking around on the web it actually seems clear that almost all of this stuff has been made up in the 20th century:

Beyond noting the importance of the Act for Improving the Police in and near the Metropolis (1829) (hereafter referred to as the Metropolitan Police Act of 1829) to the origins of modern policing, law enforcement and policing textbooks commonly include a list identified as Peel’s principles. In researching the origins of such lists and their principles, this study found that they are largely the invention of twentieth century textbook authors. From this understanding emerge several considerations for the future of textbook history and of Peel’s principles. These include the ongoing importance of incorporating new scholarship and changing historical interpretation into texts. In such an endeavor, however, care should be taken not to impose twentieth or twenty-first century concepts on the past.

Three months of dead livestock, rotten food, late checks and missing meds might provide a simpler path to the goal. Although I’m not really expecting the clean sweep.

That would certainly work with rational people, but we are talking about the Trump base here. NOTHING will change their vote.

17 year old kid. Had a military style weapon and has surely fantasized about shooting a “bad guy”.

And now he’s a murderer and the “bad guy”.

Why the fuck do we allow kids to own weapons designed specifically to kill people in large numbers?

Fuck the Republicans and the NRA.

And Trump.

In this case he ought to face the death penalty to send a message to every other wannabe Proud Boy thug.

I am afraid of this critical moment for our country.

A man went to Kenosha for Boogaloo tourism, and actually did the thing - shooting protestors.

This is a major escalation. The boogs have been talking big but none of them have ever carried it out. Yes, they’ve (VERY BELATEDLY, and apparently after he got back home so it’s not the Kenosha authorities doing it) arrested him, but there are people out there seeing this and saying “duh, he should have worn a mask”. “I could do that, and do it better.”

If the governor allowed for the Guard deployment with reasonable rules of engagement, I’m actually kinda in favor of it. The local cops are out of control, the wingers are using this for as much incitement as they can get away with, and I really don’t trust that the protestors aren’t getting infiltrated already, so shutting everything down hard may be the best play.

But if these are DHS goon squads sent in to incite and provoke, and the boogs are left to do their thing, then this will get fully out of control.

By the way, did the police take Little Proud Boy Thug Kyle to a Burger King, Hardees or McDonald’s to get a burger before going to jail?

And did the police tell Kyle they were proud of what he did?

And also his parents/guardians. What were they thinking even allowing him to have a military style weapon, and TAKE IT TO A PROTEST (or keeping it in such a place that he was able to take it without their knowing).

Wisconsin has never had the death penalty as a state, despite the GOP hard on for it. We did have one execution as a territory, IIRC.

I am thinking it will keep them home. As to how many are unchangeable votes, we will have to wait and see (and in the meantime, agree to differ).
