Recess appointments? Aren’t they only valid until said “recess” is over?
And (most of them??) expire with a new Congress anyway?
How much damage could be done if Mitch changed his mind and said they were adjourned tomorrow?
While a recess appointment only lasts until the next inauguration, that’s a lot of time to do further damage to the government on the way out.

Bess Kevin: Trump just signed an EO letting him purge thousands of federal workers for disloyalty, Vanity Fair.
Even if he loses, the action could sabotage a Biden administration indefinitely.
There are two parts to the order. He is basically swapping the expert class and the political class, so that the expert class can be fired at will, and the political class CAN NOT. So if they had time to move everyone around, Biden could not get rid of DT moles.
GAH!
Creating the new category…could allow a lame-duck President Trump to cripple his successor’s administration by firing any career federal employees who’ve been included on the list. It also could allow Trump administration officials to skirt prohibitions against “burrowing in”—the heavily restricted practice of converting political appointees (known as “Schedule C” employees) into career civil servants—by hiring them under the new category for positions which would not end with Trump’s term. Another provision orders agencies to take steps to prohibit removing “Schedule F” appointees from their jobs on the grounds of “political affiliation,” which could potentially prevent a future administration from firing unqualified appointees because of their association with President Trump.
Today, driving to the secret place where I can let my dog run, I passed someone standing in the median dressed in PPE and holding a sign. The sign’s words were hidden from me and I couldn’t make them out in the rearview mirror as I passed. On the way back, the person was still there. The sign was homemade and not entirely clear, but I could at least make out “covid is not a hoax…it’s getting worse…Donald Trump has failed you.”
That’s bold for this mostly red town.

Left hanging on the last thread, I left out part of that.
During yesterday’s hearing, Dave Daubenmire asked Marcelain to give his son a chance.
“I believe Zach has been greatly punished because of his association with me,” the father said. “I really believe in my heart that this case can be an example” of positive change by his son.
Marcelain seemed moved by the sentiments expressed by the father and son, as well as nearly 100 letters of support sent to him by people who know the younger Daubenmire and his family.
“I can see no purpose of incarceration,” Marcelain said. “I don’t know about your redemption. That’s handled by a different court.”
You wouldn’t get that break as a Muslim or an atheist.

There is a hint of a point that Kristol makes though… a smarter/more strategic/more astute/more long term thinker would recognize that being “too political” in this way could open the door to Dems expanding the Supreme Court as part of a larger court modernization bill. A larger court would dilute the power of the individual justices, so even in a very game theory personal power sort of way, this is not the way a justice should comport themselves.

Exactly. We just enact another executive order countermanding Trump’s executive order giving Biden the power to fire any civil servant to whom Trump’s executive order applies, no matter their party affiliation. Purge the Trump loyalists, then wait an appropriate interval, and then draft a new executive order reinstating the pre-Trump policies.
And when the Republicans complain, we tell them to “Eat shit.” They killed the rule of law. They went Jacksonian with reinstituting the spoils system and ignoring rules and court decisions they didn’t like. They turned the presidency into a virtual dictatorship.
We need to be willing to outbrazen the Republicans, to out-Mitch McConnell the real Mitch McConnell, to be as petty and vindictive as the Republicans, and not allow ourselves to feel guilty about it.

I used to believe this, then DACA happened. I think this particular EO will probably be easier to reverse than DACA though.
A couple threads back there was a discussion regarding SUNY (State Univ. of New York) schools holding students from going home for Thanksgiving unless they’d had a recent negative Covid-19 test.
The SUNY schools (or at least the one my brother teaches at) is doing constant on-going testing of students, faculty, and staff. They collect samples and do mass tests of 500 samples at a time to monitor if there are cases. If a mass sample has a positive they do follow-ups in that test group to find where the positive was.
So, a campus should have a on-going idea of whether they have active cases and a pipeline going to quickly narrow down and find positives when they occur. And hopefully have an idea that most of their student body is “clean” to go home in five weeks.

Isn’t “clarifying” (?”finalizing”?) the status of DACA recipients either:
1. One of the main planks in the Democratic platform this year?
2. Something that has already been enacted by the House (and, unsuprisingly, buried in the Senate by inaction)?

considering the speed that Nancy Smash moved at during Obama’s first year, with the financial meltdown of the western world, I fully believe she’s capable of doing said same if Biden is elected and the Dems have control of the Senate.
I fully expect the following:
COVID AID - with comprehensive testing and tracing, emergency PPE manufacture, masking mandates, plans for vaccine distribution
Financial forgiveness of student loans, small business loans and a moratorium on evictions and rate fixation for residencies
expansion of courts not just at SCOTUS but across the current circuits with possible additional circuits created
VRA
police reform
modified tax plans
ACA expansion
environmental reforms, rejoining Paris accords
green new deal planks enacted
plus a bunch of other stuff that would make this TL;DR
I could say yes, but who cares? Plenty of people without college degrees could run this country better than Trump ever has.
