There is an argument being made in the thread that by not saying which vaccine he’s taking, it will prevent everyone from trying to get the same vaccine he did.

The second paragraph of the Reuters article:

“We are deliberately not saying which shot the president will get, noting that all three Russian (-made) vaccines are absolutely reliable and effective,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

You Cannot Talk About Biden’s Border Actions Without Talking About Trump’s Gutting of the Federal Government, The Rude Pundit

As Garrett Graff reported in Politico in mid-January, Trump’s irrational, mercurial, and nonsensical revolving door of security officials, most with “acting” status, left the Capitol and, indeed, the entire goddamn nation vulnerable: “The practice has left his agencies severely undermanned and, often, staffed by people who are seriously underqualified for the positions they occupy.” At the frantic, bullshit end, “the Department of Homeland Security’s intelligence leadership ranks are so empty that it’s currently being led by the principal deputy general counsel.” And that extended to, well, motherfuck, the border, where the “three main border and security agencies are all but gutted.”

The Curious Case of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Box

Crave those crazy … shrimp tails?

On Monday morning, he ate a bowl of his favorite cinnamon sugar-striped cereal. As he began filling a second bowl, “something plopped out of the box,” he said in an interview. “I picked it up, and I was like, ‘This is clearly a shrimp tail.’”

He looked in the bag and saw what appeared to be another tail. Both were encrusted with sugar. “I get really grossed out, and I’m medicated for O.C.D., so this is a total nightmare for me,” he said.

Mr. Karp is a comedian, but insists this is not a “bit.”

“Privately, they were still being very nice,” he said, offering to send a replacement box, which he politely declined. Then the brand issued a public statement on Twitter.

“After further investigation with our team that closely examined the image, it appears to be an accumulation of the cinnamon sugar that sometimes can occur when ingredients aren’t thoroughly blended,” the statement from Cinnamon Toast Crunch read. “We assure you that there’s no possibility of cross contamination with shrimp.”

When his tweet started getting attention, a friend called and suggested that he re-examine the bag of cereal. “I had never even thought about going back into the bag,” he said. “Never even crossed my mind.”

After looking again, he now wishes he hadn’t. In addition to a few objects that Mr. Karp described as “shrimp skins-looking things,” “a small string” and something that looked like a pistachio — all encrusted in sugar — he noticed a “small black piece” on some of the squares and at bottom of the bag.

He believes the “black pieces” are rat poo, so he’s having the cereal tested at a laboratory.

This is not General Mills’ first shrimp rodeo. In 2011, the company sued a Michigan blueberry packer after a shipment — which was intended for future use in blueberry scones — was found to be contaminated with pieces of shrimp.

“Upon further inspection of the remaining cases of Lot #210082 Adkin blueberries, GMI discovered one shrimp and a shrimp tail on the outside of the cases,” the suit read. “The tainted blueberries were unsuitable for use in any GMI product, much less the intended product.”

Even more than those behind the pulpit, I think people are also sick of what this crap does to families and communities. Even relationships where the believers aren’t extreme can be torn and messed up with judgement and assumptions based on fear thrown at them not just at church but via all kinds of media and “activities”. That form of religion is toxic no matter who it touches, the degree varies from person to person, but it’s all toxic, and it stays with you long after you leave it.

Hence the portion at the beginning about how mothers in his little book group are looking for ways to protect their kids from “wokeness.” Because if their kids are free to learn and think for themselves, then they may gravitate towards “woke” churchs or *gasp!* even leave the faith altogether to get away from the hate and bigotry.

Not only that, the “second pandemic” went from the 1340s to the 1770s in Europe, and somewhat later in Asia, when it was replaced by Asiatic cholera. Each wave affected fewer (but still a lot of people), before this version of the bubonic plague more or less burned itself out.

en.wikipedia.org

The third plague pandemic started in the 1890s and hit mostly China and India. It was around until 1960, when the annual number of cases dropped to ~200 a year.

en.wikipedia.org

The Manchurian plague of 1910-11 was a pneumonic plague variant of the third plague pandemic. The pneumonic plague is spread by airborne particles and is a particularly deadly version of Yersenia pestis. Cambridge-trained doctor Wu Lien-teh implemented quarantines and the regular wearing of thick cloth masks to check the spread of this variant. He was featured in a Google Doodle recently, which is why I remembered all this stuff.

en.wikipedia.org

There are still bubonic plague-carrying fleas, and usually a few cases are reported every year, mostly in the Four Corners area of the USA. Basically, people get infected when they clean up middens left by the animals that carry the fleas. It is generally treatable with antibiotics.

One of the murderers of the founder of American Atheists had his sentence reduced due to a Supreme Court ruling. That said, he is unlikely to live out his sentence.

The sole surviving accomplice in the abduction and killings of Austin atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair and her family was resentenced Friday, years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that life sentences were unconstitutional for the charges on which he’d been convicted.

Gary Paul Karr, who is in his 70s and was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair, was sentenced to about 50 years in prison after he was originally given two life sentences in 2000. He was convicted on two federal charges: conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and extortion and interstate travel to commit crime of robbery. He was never charged with murder, and he was acquitted on a kidnapping charge. The bodies were found after his trial.

The 21 years he has served so far will count toward his sentence.

Trial of multi drug-resistant TB treatment ends enrolment early after independent board indicates new regimen is superior (Doctors Without Borders)

Today is World Tuberculosis Day; the world’s nations pledged at the UN many years ago to eradicate TB by 2025. Since they did not put the necessary money or teams into the resolution, that seems unlikely now. The theme this year is “Time’s running out.”

A trial aiming to find a better treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has stopped enrolling patients early after its independent data safety and monitoring board indicated that the regimen being studied is superior to current care, and more patient data was extremely unlikely to change the trial’s outcome.

TB-PRACTECAL, a phase II/III clinical trial sponsored by Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), tested a six-month regimen of bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid and moxifloxacin, against the locally accepted standard of care. At the time of the interim analysis 242 patients had been enrolled in seven trial sites across Belarus, South Africa and Uzbekistan.

MSF is now preparing a dataset to share with the World Health Organization (WHO) as soon as possible, and full results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal in the coming months. MSF believes these findings will have the potential to change clinical practice.

Short take: it suffers deeply from trying to serve too many masters.

Longer take: Science Fiction is an art form best left to the experts. When alien tech is the McGuffin many choices have to be made about how to handle the god-in-the-box nature of items. Debris writers seem to want to play the faith-angle, which is the worst option on the table.

Even longer take: The compounding problem is that the authors want to make a government-agency international mystery without having a clue about how intelligence and military operations work. No, you don’t hold SCI discussions in the open over cell phones. It just doesn’t work that way. The producers/writers so want to be a mish-mash of stereotypical TV shows from the past 30 years that the episodes are just missing too much detail. The episodes rely on tropes, assuming the audience will just know/accept certain things as reality.

After just four episodes into the first season I am very disappointed in it.

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Mar 24, 2021 • 1:32:47am

March 15 posting to YouTube, now unlisted (3:15).

The post is audio from Telltale Atheist. He and his daughter live in West By God Virginia, where abstinence-only sex education rules.

His daughter recorded the teacher proselytising her religious beliefs, including calling out parents of children as immoral if they “believed” in such things as LGBT rights, or promoting atheistic “immoral lifestyles.”

After Telltale put the audio up on his YouTube channel, he and his daughter started getting death threats and threats to burn his house down.

Atheists and atheist groups have offered to help him move away, but he and his daughter are not doing that, on the grounds if the Christian terrorists are successful, they will do it again, both there and other places.

What the teacher did in this class is a clear violation of the law (like she cares).

That depends. When my work benefits ran out the COBRA costs vs ACA costs for a roughly equivalent plan were not much different. Now, I did not qualify for any sort of ACA discount - so that might be where increased savings came from for others.

When I became disabled I paid $2200 a month, when Obamacare came about I paid $400 a month for 4 of us, now I pay $4 a month for 3 as my oldest is now on her own medical plan. I’m not sure why it came down but I’m not arguing, and that’s on about $70k a year income.

Facebook only exists to make money (especially for its founder and board members.)

Facebook makes money by making profiles on billions of people

Facebook can only make these profiles if its users engage with Facebook posts.

Trump engaged millions of his rabid followers on Facebook, thus helping Facebook’s mission.

Removing Trump thus harmed Facebook’s ability to complete its missions.

Thus, eventually, Trump or his replacement(s) will be back on Facebook.

That was another great Chapter in American imperialism. “We got there just in time!”

Bibi’s going to preside over another caretaker government because he can’t get to 61 majority and neither can the opposition. Despite being indicted and epitome of corrupt acts/practices, Bibi will continue to dominate Israeli politics and opposition parties can’t get their acts together.

Some of this is the nature of the Knesset and minimum threshold to get a seat in the Knesset, but the more fundamental problem is that Bibi hasn’t been forced to resign over the corruption prosecution that is still ongoing.

Israel has always had coalition governments, and this election outcome is no different. I don’t see the outcome changing in the next election, which will likely be held later this year. Or the elections after that unless the Israeli government changes how the Knesset is compromised and the threshold to have seats.

I saw some tweets with pictures that the ship may have embedded its bow in the canal wall, which is, as you may imagine, very problematic for trying to extract it. There are also some comments that it may have been speeding; the limit on ships transiting the canal is 8 knots (9.2 mph, 14.8 km/h).

If you walk into any Walmart or Target store you actually have to dig around to find jeans for women that don’t have the holes in them. Nor can you find denim that is 100 percent cotton and not stretchy crap that’s got polyester and elastic woven into the fabric. And do not even get me started on pockets that don’t go as deep as my thumb let alone being able to actually put a hand in there. I have to buy men’s sweats to even have pockets. It looks like my next shot at buying jeans will be starting with mens. They’re made better and have a decent price point for brands like wrangler and Levi.

If I could figure out a way to have a business to make pockets for women’s clothing, I bet I would have a steady stream of customers.

It’s clear the GOPers weren’t in the room where it happened. /Hamilton

GOP doesn’t care about facts, reality, or the law. They don’t care that they’re denying people representation, or the right to vote. Their entire party is reliant on voter suppression and gerrymandering to remain in power for as long as possible because the demographics bend against them in the long term.

GOPers in Congress are out of touch with Americans, and lie nonstop.

They want people to think tax hikes on someone making $400k a year is somehow going to hit a person in the middle class (it isn’t). Or that it will somehow slow the economy (it wont). That’s the billionaires and multimillionaires talking who have spent fortunes gaming the tax code to keep as much money out of sight and tax collector hands. They aren’t paying their fair share, and that burden shifting has cost the nation dearly.

GOP solutions for everything revolves around tax cuts, and yet we don’t have higher economic growth. We see that canard from the GOP every time they push tax cuts through.

GOPers concerned about Biden paying for his plans are trotting out the lies about who ends up paying for the additional spending/services. They were never concerned when pushing their massive redistributive tax cuts.

there are two aspects to discussions about the ‘gun problem’

- what to do
- how to achieve it

here is electoral-vote.com and their two minute analysis about why any form of gun control is never gonna happen

i am in total agreement and that’s why i keep saying we should focus on gun accountability. forget controlling the hardware; it’s a lost cause. make people accountable for what they do (or fail to do). it’s easy to understand and totally relatable to many other areas of life. makes it individual and personal, not sweeping (no gun grabs, registrations databases). and it’s based on people’s actual bad behavior.

there can be no out loud argument against personal accountability other than “we want the right to bear arms but no responsibility for whatever happens.”

how to achieve it we discussed yesterday:
dems support the 2A, law enforcement, and responsible gun owners
republicans support mass shooters, the reckless and careless, because they hate what the 2A says

A majority of Americans aren’t sociopaths who put their personal pleasure above their health and safety, or the health/safety of those around them.

So despite GOP efforts to try and reopen swiftly and ignore public health recommendations, and even some Democrats in various states moving to reopen faster, the people themselves are going to be slow to resume pre-pandemic behaviors.

They’re going to wait for vaccinations to be widely/easily available before going back to “normal”.

As I pointed out yesterday, NJ has paused additional opening/relaxation of rules because of surges in cases. NYC is considering same. Right now the cases are manageable, but as people let down their guard, the chances variants spread/mutate grow.

A video from a rally against Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate in New York City has gone viral. In the video, activist and elementary school music teacher Alice Tsui speaks of Anti-Asian rhetoric’s impact on children. “I am so mad at the toxicity of systemic racism that we breathe in,” Tsui said passionately to a group of over 100 supporters.

In her speech, Tsui shared tear-jerking statements and comments students have made to her, including one student asking if she had coronavirus and another calling her “China” to her face. Additionally, she shared statements Black students have made about the increasing violence against Asian Americans in the U.S. “One of my Black students told me, ‘This hate won’t be on the news until more people die.’ What does this say about what Black children have already internalized?” Tsui asked.

Funny story. We were chatting about crypto on Slack at work the other day and one of the engineers said, “Guess who bought a bunch of bitcoin in college when it was worthless, threw away the laptop, and then had his phone die that had the 2FA information on it.”

I imagine crypto’s really good for money laundering though…and tax evasion. I’m sure we’ll learn about that through Musk one of these days.

Some crypto is good for that. Bitcoin really isn’t; it’s fairly easy to track. Monero is a coin that was designed with anonymity and lack of traceability as primary goals. Most of Musk’s wealth is Tesla stock. No tax event unless he sells it; it’s not secret how many shares he owns; not sure why he’d need to launder money.

re: #95 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

[Embedded content]

Video

Apparently, when we were living in West Virginia, my daughter’s fellow elementary school students regularly told her that she was going to hell because we didn’t attend church. (We did do the Unitarian-Universalist thing for a few years during her preschool years so the kids could get some exposure to religious concepts in an environment that didn’t automatically damn you to hell for questioning, dissenting from, or even rejecting those very same religious concepts. But, of course, Unitarians might as well be Satanists and Atheists in the eyes of Appalachian fundamentalist Christianity.)

Of course, my daughter didn’t tell us this until she was in high school in predominantly Catholic New Mexico, where no one seems to give a crap that we didn’t raise our kids Catholic (or in any other religious tradition).

I just called in and used the account credit to purchase a new set of tickets for this fall, for our anniversary, on the assumption that we would both be able to get vaccinated by then.

So.

After my encounter with the bird in the laundry room, I hadn’t seen it anywhere and thought my turning up there had chased it away.

So yesterday I went up to see if the nest was still there, or it the cleaners had found and removed it.

There’s a bird.

In the laundry room.

On a nest.

With at least one egg.

And the only thing I can do is leave it alone — if I warned people, they’d all go up there to see it “just this once.”

I hope it manages. (And after the breeding season that nest is marked by me for destruction — unless someone wants it for research purposes or something.)

That does seem to be the mindset. The thing is, it’s not a huge thing to make pockets deeper. Or to put them in. Nor does it cost much. So it’s an asshole assumption that women carry purses and don’t need pockets. I don’t get it. The only reason I carry a very small purse anymore is to hold a hairbrush. My hair is unruly as hell, lol. I’ve never worn makeup so a purse is just another thing for me to lose. But my phone, keys and wallet(with a chain) don’t require a purse.

I need pockets to hold my IPhone when walking outside. Which means I need a phone that isn’t oversized — and pockets that are sufficiently deep. And the reason for this need? The phone pedometer that counts steps.

That’s why more people are walking out of Xtian churches and never going back. They’re sick of the bullshit coming from Pulpit Pimps and Priests.

This is … alarming, coming from a freak like Dreher:

“… the people you go to church with aren’t necessarily the people who you want to be standing with when the bad stuff starts. He explained that a lot of church folks he knows are finding each other in small groups, even though they go to different churches. Some of them report that their churches may not be fully woke, but the churches are so desperate to avoid taking a hard stand on anything that might get them accused of bigotry that they are trying to avoid trouble.”

So. The craziest of Christians are finding that their churches are backing off from declaring jihad and arming the faithful to commit mass murder and their reaction is, rather than check themselves, to spin off into sub-groups?

Just put up the black flags and attach the machine guns to the technicals and declare the southwest to be the Caliphate already …

My guess with everything to do with Musk is how it fits into his Corporate Space Dystopia. Bet he doesn’t want to use US greenbacks on his Martian slave colonies.
