An Exceptional Tiny Desk (Home) Concert: Yebba

Somehow I missed this fantastic Tiny Desk concert when it was posted, but I shall now rectify that omission, because it is truly excellent.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Bobby Carter | September 8, 2021
As the camera slowly rises to the room, we see Yebba in the center of a circle, complete with band members, background singers and a string quartet. The room is part of Electric Lady Studios, where her debut album, Dawn, was recorded. The album bears the name of Yebba’s mother, whom she tragically lost in 2016, and its songs find the Memphis native delving inward to process it all.

The singer is a bit of a live wire, rarely giving the same performance twice, and that’s on display during most of this Tiny Desk (home) concert. The songs differ slightly or not so little compared to the studio sessions from Dawn, especially on the swelling interpretation of the lead single, “Distance.” In between each song, Yebba shares unfocused and playful banter that just feels like she’s family, and that feeling persists throughout this entire set, right down to the eye contact she shares with keyboardist and co-writer James Francies when speaking candidly about the final song, “How Many Years.”

This Tiny Desk concert has been in the works since the spring of 2020, when the album was completed but shelved until Yebba (and the rest of the world) was in a better place. It was worth the wait.

Wow, what a singer. There’s no autotune on this, she’s just nailing every single note.

Last Tuesday I was listening to SiriusXM’s “Living American” show, which presents classical pieces by living composers. The host was none other than Neil Sedaka, who interestingly enough, also composes classical music. He presented pieces by himself as well as other surprising examples: Billy Joel and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. Below is the Greenwood piece that was played:

And now, Glenn Greenwald thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.

In the thread it was suggested that Glenn’s response was inartful and that he may have meant the opposite. But with Glenn, you never know.

All the stories about winter driving in the previous thread reminds me of my winter driving adventure.

It was in February, 1965, and I was traveling from the PNW to Boston. It’s easy to remember the time as the purpose of my trip was ordered by my Local Draft Board. I was driving across Nebraska on US 30 (this was well before I-80 was completed) when a ripping blizzard developed in the late afternoon. I was traveling eastward and the wind was out of the south at 30-40 MPH. I was driving my 57 Chevy convertible and the wind would billow the top upward allowing a good part of the storm to get inside. It got so cold the car heater couldn’t keep up. (Later I learned to place a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to help the engine stay warm.) There were a few cattle trucks on the road and when they passed it was a whiteout for almost a minute. Could only drive about 15 MPH.

Picked up a guy who slid into the ditch. He was damn near frozen and happy for the ride in a nearly frozen car.

Managed to get to Oglalalla, Nebraska and found a motel room.

Now for the second part of the story.

Across from the motel was a local restaurant where I went for supper. Their special was a t-bone steak for $2.99 and I couldn’t resist. The steak was the biggest steak I’d ever seen. It was about an inch thick and was larger than a 12 inch dinner plate. It slopped over the sides of the plate. And it was tender and tasty. Also, a 12 inch plate of french fries was included with the meal

Only once or twice since then Have I had a steak that good.

My wife Robyn is slowly turning me into a Canadian. For some reason I find that comforting. Thankfully she, like me, has no interest in either Hockey or curling.

I don’t want to hear any more smug Canadians, like the ones who describe America as a “problem”. We may or may not go down, but the forces that push us, push worldwide.

Usually there is money and organization associated with this sort of behavior.

Sadly, I am beginning to wonder if the old saying about Mexico may start to also apply to Canada.

“Pity poor Mexico. So far from G-d. And so close to the United States.”

I remember those days.

There was restaurant just north of Fort Sill called The Plantation. It served steaks just as you mentioned, with the edges drooping off the sides of the plate. And with the side veggies on a separate plate.

For reasons that are absolutely baffling to me, my company has decided that all of the software developers have to take Security+ training and pass the test. Annoyingly, the only certification I will have beyond a bachelors and masters degrees will be in a field I don’t want to learn about. I’ve decided the analogy is the equivalent of having to learn to build a plane in order to renew my driver’s license.

And, in order to make it easy on you, they’re cramming a ten day course with a ton of things to memorize into a four day course with a test on the fifth day. The one thing I don’t do well is memorize. I practice. So I have bought a book. I have until the week of March 18th to read it in addition to the other stuff I am trying to do, which includes helping my almost 17 year old with his classes.

* When I say baffling, I know they have their reasons, but it seems to fit into other training I have to take that really doesn’t relate to my job. Some people have to know those things, but I don’t need to, and yet for some reason I have to take them anyway.

I guess that one question might be “Is there enough time to study and learn the material?” If not, I guess that the next option would be to study and learn the test.

Family story:

My father was a New York City native. He had to pass the City High School boards to graduate. One of the tests was in French. He looked at old tests and found that almost all of them were basically of the form “Write an essay describing a tour of France.”

So my father wrote up a tour of France. He had it checked by folks fluent in French. After everybody agreed that it was flawless, he practiced and memorized it.

On the day of the test, he goes into the exam room and receives the test. The question is: “Write an essay on how you would teach a course in the French Language.”

My father thought for a moment, and wrote (in French) “I would teach a course in he French Language as if it were a tour of France. And then wrote his memorized essay on touring France.

When he got the results back he had two grammatical errors. Both in the first sentence.

It’s never a “simple ‘yes or no’ question” with a politician. They’ll immediately launch into a long and rambling non-answer, then get indignant if you insist upon getting that single word answer because it’s “more complex than that.”

It’s not so much that Trump lies, it’s that his lies are so laughably easy to disprove. Just a cursory Google search shows that not is he not the only president to see UE fall during his presidency, his actually saw the highest post-WWII spike and the “fall” in the early half was inherited from the guy who cut UE in half from when he took office to when he left.

His cult think that JFK Jr has secretly been in hiding for decades, fighting a valiant struggle against an international cabal of celebrities and politicians who get off on killing children in a moment of pure fright to harvest a neuro-chemical to get the “ultimate high,” and that Johnny’s gonna come back one day to put their God-Emperor back upon the Golden Throne to wipe out this shadowy cabal for good.

So, you know, they’re not even on speaking terms with reality.

You’re talking about people who have lived their whole life being conditioned to think that blind faith in something for which there is zero evidence is a virtue. You can’t undo that conditioning just because they’ve found a new messiah.

There was restaurant just north of Fort Sill called The Plantation. It served steaks just as you mentioned, with the edges drooping off the sides of the plate. And with the side veggies on a separate plate.

Tough crowd here. Yeah, it’s actually the RCA building in 1932 and it was Lewis Hines rather than Ebbetts who took the iconic workers at lunch photo.

This shot has always been considered historical: Margaret Bourke-White on the Art Deco eagle of the Chrysler Building. It’s spooky, but she and her monster Graflex 4x5 SLR are not too far out of a hatch in the sculpture. This is a bit later than the Empire State shot.

It was 80 years ago this month that 15 high-ranking Nazi officials met in a villa on the outskirts of Berlin. Among them were names like Adolph Eichmann and Heinrich Muller. They gathered over snacks and alcohol to address a single issue desired by their leader, Adolf Hitler. And in less than two hours, they came up with an answer.

They called it “The Final Solution.”

It was a plan to wipe out the Jewish population of German-occupied Europe. It was unspeakably evil and horribly simple. Evict Jews from their homes, transport them to concentration camps, work them to death or murder them outright, then burn the bodies.

It was meant to exterminate an entire race of people, people like Rita Mermelstein, who would later take the married name Rita Smilovitz. If that last name sounds familiar, it’s because she would become the mother of Bernie Smilovitz, the popular, long-serving sports anchor for WDIV-TV (Channel 4) here in Detroit.

One of my cousins is doing Uber Eats gig work up in Canada. He sometimes posts his exchanges with his customers…

He posted one about a week ago where his customer was a woman and as he humored her while he was at the drive-thru she started taking an interest in him…it was super sweet and he ended the chat with ‘food is by your door, take care.’ (he has just come out of a long dark period in his life where he would literally disappear for a year or more at a time - then turn up in a hospital near death) Good to see him enjoying his life and reconnecting with his kids.

Last night’s Nuremberg Rally reveals a Trump that has shook off all the chains that were attempting to hold him back the last time. This display of a raving lunatic proves that Ivanka or any other handlers have lost all control over his conduct and speech writing. Trump will have no handlers capable of reigning him in from now on. Only voices promoting violence and mayhem speak to him now.

This speech was manufactured and ad-libbed by Trump himself and his direct trusted cronies. He has positioned himself as Dear Leader within his sphere and no voice other than the screaming malevolent toddler inside his own head has any sense of control now.

Rest assured, we have now passed even WW2 as the most dangerous period in America as Trump will order US Military hardware and personnel inside US territory to kill US citizens. Trump will order kangaroo court proceedings by compliant AG’s and sycophant DA’s to harass enemies and imprison them without trial. Mass arrests and shootings of protesters will be ordered.

The comparison to WW2 is not hyperbole as Trump will once again have control of nuclear weapons along with his usual host of Evangelical nutjobs screaming in his ear about how he is the Bringer of the Rapture and End Times. As Trump’s age and health decline he will decide to end the world with him. He is this malevolent, and his followers that evil. I know his followers. i grew up under them. They are my family. They were friends growing up. They control small town boards and occupy Governor’s chairs. Much of America has still no idea what 35% of this country actually wants and stands for. They are evil. And they intend to act on that evil.

Assumes facts not in evidence - namely that Ivanka and all the rest were acting as brakes on Trump’s worst impulses.

Consider that they’re there to amplify Trump’s worst impulses, and that their own criminal misconduct is wrapped up in Trump’s. They benefit from Trump obstructing justice and interfering in the ongoing investigations just as much as Trump does.

This is the deal—not all states will experience this shutdown. Specifically, California, New York and New Mexico (and possibly other states) have laws in place to secure abortion rights even if Roe is overturned. Which could make it see less Draconian than it really is. But when more states enact laws like Texas’, which put *anyone* who assists a person to obtain an abortion in the crosshairs, and with the added on bounty, that’s when the shit will hit the fan. Because you know there’s going to be some mother out here in Mesa or Chandler who drives her teenage daughter over to San Diego to get an abortion and the mom gets arrested by bounty hunters. Just substitute “Houston” for “Mesa” and “Las Cruces” for San Diego” and this is an all over the country thing.

Or even an international incident. Abortion is now for all intents and purposes legal in Mexico (it was decriminalized last year), and I am sure some enterprising Mexican doctors are now setting up in border towns. They may not be ADVERTISING that they provide abortions, but they’re providing abortions.

I can’t get over this…people so afraid of a shot that they’d pay for a fake vaxx card. That said, hell isn’t quite hot enough for the proponents of this scheme.

Long Island pediatric nurse charged in $900K fake vaccine card scheme, NYPD husband being investigated

A pediatric nurse practitioner has been arrested for selling phony COVID-19 vaccine cards on Long Island — and her NYPD officer husband faces a departmental probe over his possible involvement in the scam, prosecutors and sources said.

As part of the alleged scheme, Julie DeVuono, 49, is accused of using her Amityville, L.I. practice, Wild Child Pediatric Healthcare, to obtain blank vaccine cards from the state Department of Health, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said.

She also obtained vaccine doses and syringes through the department, purportedly to administer to patients, prosecutors said.

DeVuono, along with Marissa Urraro, 44, a licensed practical nurse employed at the practice, allegedly charged adults $220 and children $85 for the cards and entered fabricated information into the New York State Immunization Information System, prosecutors said.

Undercover detectives told prosecutors they were given vaccine cards at the pediatric office “on one or more occasions,” but a vaccine was never administered.

*snip*

During a search of the DeVuonos’ Amityville home Thursday night, cops found $900,000 in cash and a ledger indicating the scheme has racked up over $1.5 million since November, prosecutors said.

nydailynews.com

I have to wonder how this came to the attention of the authorities? Tip? Or traffic clogging up S. Wellwood Ave. in Amity? (Why yes, I really did go out to take a look at the street situation…)

Yes, they absolutely are. And this means *anyone*. Give a friend the money to get the abortion? Jail. Drive someone to Sky Harbor airport so they can fly to San Diego? Jail. Drive your kid over to Albuquerque for an abortion? Jail. Absolutely in the cards.

And keep in mind, there are people who will be assembling for church a mile from me in six hours, and they want to execute women who have obtained abortions. This isn’t even as far as these crazies will go.

I have a similar neighbor. Right after I moved into this place (three plus decades ago) the water heater broke. I forget which tool I needed and I was already tired of trips to the hardware store, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask the neighbor across the street who I had yet to meet if he had one I could borrow. He said certainly, walked me back to his immaculate workshop where every tool had its marked place, grabbed it and then informed me he was coming over to help. He took one look, swore a few words about how the installers hadn’t put in shutoff valves, and then told me he just happened to have a couple lying around in his shop.

TLDR: Neighbor came over, installed the water heater along with new shutoff valves, and even hauled the old water heater away for me.

Be friends with someone who maybe considered an abortion? It’s on her to prove she didn’t have it; or if she did, it’s on you to prove you didn’t help her procure it. The penalties are if a jury is convinced; but having to hire a lawyer and go to court is if anybody just makes the accusation. Even if they’re making it up.

The ting is that Neil Young’s play rate on Spotify probably is just a blip on total streams. Now if you get a metric shit-ton of artists all yanking their music on Spotify, then perhaps something might change. At best, Young’s pulling his catalog is nothing more than pissing in the wind.

It would have to be a major player, like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus or someone like that.

re: #178 dat_said

I lost all my tools during my divorce from hell. I was always helping people with electrical, plumbing, appliance repair, etc. When I got asked for help after the divorce, I’d reply that I no longer had the tools.

Thus started a period where folks were buying me tools in exchange for helping them. It wasn’t long until I had a ton of new tools. Worked out great for everybody. They got the needed repairs for the cost of a tool (far cheaper than hiring someone) and I got nifty new tools.

I continue to help folks with repairs, but now have the means to help and don’t need any more tools. In fact, there is a room in the basement that is overflowing with tools.

One thing that continues to amaze me is all the improperly done work that so called professionals have done. For example I just repaired our whole house humidifier and had to shut off water to the whole house because no shut off had been installed. Don’t know if it was incompetence or just the desire to save a few dollars on the installation, but WTF??

Don’t know if it was incompetence or just the desire to save a few dollars on the installation, but WTF??

I certainly ran across a few of the “Hmmm…, that’s interesting. Some people wouldn’t do it that way” (the Midwestern passive aggressive way of saying WTF) installations over the years in this house. Part of my first weekend of homeownership was running a line from the sump pump to outside. Couldn’t believe they went through all the trouble of digging a hole for the pump and then running a garden hose from the pump to a floor drain. It was probably just as much cost and work to attach a fitting to the pump than to run a proper size pipe to outside. Disaster just waiting to happen. Found out years later they only drain tiled half the basement floor too but that’s another long story.

I think I finally have all the plumbing, electrical, and heating in a decent place so the next homeowners won’t complain too much. The one thing the current idiot homeowner has done is to have a drainspout from the roof empty out onto a shaded part of the driveway. Makes for a nice sheet of ice every thaw freeze cycle during the spring.

So, basically most of them. I’m not in control of most of the software I write. A Disney worker cannot publish any art; it is all owned by Disney. Papers written and published in journals are owned by the journals; a writer actually has to get permission to cite their own work in later papers. Music contracts include clauses about what control the artist has vs the company.

re: #235 Captain Magic

Any artist that isn’t in control of their catalog is a moron.

Looked it up - apparently, it may depend on whether the artist owns the master recordings.

Bit of a long and legal explanation regarding Taylor Swift:

According to U.S. copyright law, any music recording is subject to two distinct types of ownership: one that protects the specific sound recording, and the other protecting the musical work. The ownership of the sound recording is referred to as owning a master,[3] which is the first recording of the music, from which copies are made for sales and distribution. The owner of the master, therefore, owns all formats of the recording, such as digital versions for download or on streaming platforms, or physical versions available on CDs and vinyl records.[4] Anyone who wishes to reproduce a recording must ask for permission from the master owner.[1] Before the emergence of digital music platforms, musicians relied on record labels to promote their music through means such as airplay or physical distributions to retailers. These labels would typically require artists to sign record deals which would give them the rights to their masters “in perpetuity”.[5] On the other hand, owning the musical work is referred to as owning the publishing rights, which covers the lyrics of the musical work before it became a sound recording, its melodies, sheet music, composition, and instrumental arrangements. Songwriters generally own the publishing rights, and are referred to as “publishers” of the music.[3]

In 2005, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift signed a 13-year recording deal with Big Machine Records, a Nashville-based record label newly established by Scott Borchetta, as their first recording artist. The contract gave Big Machine the ownership of the masters to Swift’s first six albums in exchange for a cash advance.[4] From 2006 to 2017, Swift released six studio albums with Big Machine: Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), and Reputation (2017).[6] Although Big Machine owned the masters, Swift retained the publishing rights to the six albums due to her role as the main songwriter of all of the songs she released under Big Machine, which would allow her to re-record the songs in the future if she wanted to, as per the artist-label agreement that stipulates the artist cannot re-record a song for a fixed period of time; Swift would not have been able to re-record her musical work had she not been a songwriter.[7][3]

After her contract with Big Machine Records expired in November 2018, Swift signed a new contract with Universal Music Group record label Republic Records. Variety reported that to that point Swift’s catalog constituted around 80% of Big Machine’s revenue.[8] Swift revealed an element as part of her Republic Records contract which affected all artists under Universal: any sale of the company’s shares in Spotify (the largest on-demand music streaming platform) resulted in equity for all Universal artists on a non-recoupable basis.[6] The contract with Republic Records also allowed Swift to fully own the albums the label will distribute, both the masters and the publishing rights, starting with her seventh studio album, Lover (2019).[1]

Was that the place beyond the ranges, paneled in wood from ammunition crates, with a seismograph on the counter? Went there TDY a couple times, and visited Geronimo’s grave nearby.

You are correct that it was North of the post, near the village Medicine Park.

To be honest, I do not remember much about the decor beyond it being a large old, dark, and musty farmhouse (kind of) converted to a restaurant. There was a child’s wading pool in the back filled with catfish so you could select your own.

The first time I was there, as we left the house, there was a young woman with a jar walking along the front lawn looking intently at the grass. We asked what she was doing and she showed us. She was looking for tarantulas to catch so she could sell them to a local pet shop. She already had several.

And yes; In the East, when it rains, the earthworms come up out of the flooded ground. In that part of Southwest Oklahoma, it was the tarantulas. Pity the poor things, they didn’t have a chance against a bored bunch of young guys with not much else to do while we waited for the next artillery round to be fired. (We were practicing calling in artillery fire on targets.)

I’ll write some on Geronimo in a later post. (Or take a nap. Whichever comes first.) ;)

Prosecuting Trump won’t stop the growth of fascism in this country, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prosecute Trump.

He will have some time in Spandau prison to publish a work on his struggles.

Yep. Any PCB artwork I produced belonged to the Company I worked for. Hell, I even had the Executive Chef demand my Lasagna recipe by claiming it was somehow the companies IP because I brought it in a couple of times* for a Dept. pot luck. Needless to say I just laughed at that one.

* Edited to add, I used the companies oven to bake it so it was fresh and piping hot and that was the basis of his claim.

according to my sister, the lack of a pee tape invalidates not only the entire Steele dossier, but any and all investigations that in any way touch upon Trump-Russia allegations of any sort.

Glenn, Aaron Mate, Mark Tracey, and a host of others have done a masterful job of conflating the Mueller report with the dossier. None of their followers remember a single thing about Mueller.

I saw a Mueller ‘action figure’ yesterday. For sale. Unused, in a box.

And she had COVID.

Eilish has publicly credited the vaccines she got with saving her life when she was infected. The Weeknd (currently #1 in Spotify streams) also seems to be pro-vax, as is Ed Sheeran (#3). Sheeran also caught a mild case of COVID and credits vaccination for its mildness.

The Weeknd has his own record label, so he could certainly make his own decision. Eilish is under contract with Interscope, and Sheeran with Asylum and Atlantic, so they may not have as much agency. But wouldn’t it be cool to see them try!

They could give a public statement that they would leave Spotify if their labels let them.

Republican Sen. Graham heaps praise on fellow South Carolinian and potential Supreme Court nominee J. Michelle Childs

“Graham, who agreed that Childs’ educational background would benefit the court, refuted arguments from fellow Republicans that Biden is unfairly imposing race and gender criteria on his nomination. He defended Childs as “highly qualified” and cited Republican President Ronald Reagan’s nomination of Sandra Day O’Connor as precedent for making nominations based partly on demographic criteria.”

The other day I read something where Clyburn is pushing for Childs to be the nominee, citing that he had gotten the support of both South Carolina senators.

Yep. From the same article.

“House Majority Whip James Clyburn also advocated for Childs in an interview on CBS on Sunday. CNN has previously reported Clyburn, who represents South Carolina’s 6th District, has lobbied Biden personally for Childs to be nominated to the Supreme Court.”

Isn’t there an old Icelandic saga about the time a trickster-troll invited Thor and Loki to dinner and dared Thor to pick up the cat? Thor tried and tried, but could only get one of the kitty’s paws off the ground. Later it was revealed that the cat was actually the Midgard Serpent in disguise, and Thor’s attempt basically invented earthquakes.

It’s a real story! Those Poetic Edda writers definitely knew what happens when a kitten sleeps on your lap.

They simply need to add a note to the Company oven declaring that the recipe for anything baked therein is and remains company property
