There is a grain of truth to his statement that it was “madness” for Republics to leave the USSR.
It was madness and pre-programmed chaos for the Soviet Republics to simply fall apart with no negotiations on how to resolve outstanding issues like how to divide up the debts, assets and other state responsibilities and competencies, without resolving issues of minorities living outside their “native” Republics.
Add that the Breakup of the USSR left Russia with the largest diaspora in the world, some 30 million were left “stranded” outside Russia, and where they were once a rather privileged and even pampered minority, they found themselves the object of discrimination in many cases.
Just the sort of thing that would make them call for help.
The current conflict was brought about by the failure of Soviet leadership to even address, much less resolve these issues in the 1990’s.
Putin’s Donbas address is unbelievably dark and aggressive.

Just learned from a good friend here whose mother died today that due to bureaucratic stupidity combined with unbridled greed, instead of the average local burial costs of $500-600, they’re essentially being coerced into paying almost $11,000 to bury her in her city.

2) Next will be claim of those region’s 2014 borders and demands that they be turned over.

Trump would be asking Putin how he can help.
Trump would be arguing that this is why we need to disband NATO.
One thing that absolutely everybody seems to be forgetting about Russia’s early history is that the center and capital was Kiev. The northern lands, Including Moscow, were offshoots of the much earlier Kievan state (no, not Kyiv — we’re talking about the 8th century or so, languages change).
If Putin’s claim is on the basis of real Russian history, the first thing he should do is transfer the capital to Kyiv, which was the center in those times (Moscow wasn’t mentioned anywhere before the mid-twelfth century). If he doesn’t start there, then his whole argument collapses into a pile of crap.

Meanwhile, the reality is that in 1938, most of Britain was in agreement with Chamberlain and saw the idea of going to war with Germany over Czech independence as a fool’s errand. Hell, they felt much the same way a year later about Poland, and felt it was an even bigger mistake after Dunkirk. The nation only began to support war with Germany when bombs began raining down on their own homes during The Blitz.
But much like the idea of the US as champing at the bit to go to war before Dec ‘41, the idea that Britain was a nation held back by peacemongers was largely a post-war myth fabricated by war-time leaders to explain why Hitler had been allowed to get as powerful as he had before the war began in earnest.

Given the military option is off the table, what real options are there? Throughout generations, Russians have excelled at bearing privation; they will laugh at any sanctions we would impose. As mentioned upstairs, anyone who attended Putin’s meeting today on invasion plans would never have been able to present an honest assessment; disagreement with the supreme leader would have lead to a quick execution. As for non-military recommendations, Putin is the oligarch of oligarchs— none would dare challenge him for fear of a quick demise. Perhaps Putin is envisioning a GOP wave of Trumpists taking over the House and Senate in 2022, leaving the United States incapable of responding to Russian depredations. There does not seem a good solution to force Russia to back off from their current course. The war between autocracy and democracy is playing out on the world stage and the result is very uncertain.

They may hate it; but who among them has the political strength or popular support to reverse this policy? They are as opposed to democracy as Putin and their fortunes require his survival. They may feel that autocracy is on the march worldwide; the continued success of Trump here and his legions of fanatic supporters may persuade them that it won’t be long before he returns to rule. Russians aren’t as short term in their thinking as Americans. Waiting 3 years for the restoration is nothing to them.

A few weeks ago Tuckyo Rose gave full-throated approval to Putin actions and dismissed our national interests in maintaining a democratic Ukraine. I had assumed he was speaking on behalf of Trump but maybe Putin is his direct paymaster. You’d think someone there would say, “We have an obligation to point out falsehood as falsehood and not repeat it as fact.”
FYI to all the MAGATs out there - if you think Russia invading Ukraine won’t impact your lives buckle up. We could see a major disruption of international trade, communications infrastructure, energy.
Pro tip: Go Solar.

The paper that downplayed Hitler, promoted Judith Miller, relentlessly attacked Hillary for her emails, and ignored its due diligence on Trump in 2016 is just continuing its long history of failing to provide critical information to its readers on the dangers posed by enemies, foreign and domestic.

Yes — that’s what I did essentially but it’s hard enough with worldle and like worldle, you basically have a total of only 6 guesses to identify 4 words. (Yes — you can somewhat use information from a specific solution to help with another solution — but it’s limited)

So you’re on grid at night…Battery backup and then go self-supply. I set my battery to use 60% before going back to grid so my overnight usage is minimal. I used 0.3kW last night from the grid - so I hit 53% battery around 6:30am - sun started to kick back in at 7am. It starts pulling a little from the grid as it reaches the limit I set. Battery max is 10kW. Theoretically, I could get through an extended blackout if it didn’t get too foggy or cloudy.

BYU student making homemade rocket fuel starts dorm fire
By: Jeff TavssPosted at 9:46 AM, Feb 21, 2022 and last updated 10:17 AM, Feb 21, 2022
PROVO, Utah — A BYU student making rocket fuel inside the kitchen of a campus dormitory started a fire Sunday that caused damage to the building, displacing residents.University police said they were alerted to the fire at Heritage Halls - Building Four at 4:30 p.m and found the fire sprinklers had been activated and were flooding the floor.
Flames from the fire “had engulfed the walls and ceiling around the stove and the intense heat tripped the fire sprinkler system,” the department wrote.
After the fire was put out, an investigation found that the student was making homemade rocket fuel on the kitchen stove when it exploded into a fireball.
No one was injured, but the department said “some dorm residents will be displaced due to the flooding.”
“Please keep your experiments in the lab and supervised by trained professionals,” warned the police.

Yep…also, excess gets exported back to the grid 19.2kW today for me. Net metering from PG&E means they reimburse me for that energy. I have gas for heat/water/stove, so I still have to pay for that. So about $44 for the current bill cycle/week. Fuckers.

re: #170 Targetpractice
And part of Great Britain being late to start rearming is that they’d decided in 1919 that there wouldn’t be a war for ten years and they could cut military spending. And then they decided in 1928 to self perpetuate the rule for even longer. It was abandoned in 1932, but Britain was in the throes of the Great Depression at the time and military spending was not something they could easily do. Suddenly they needed to try to catch up in military production with a Germany that was a couple of years ahead of them. Which led to a lot of issues involving all three services wanting factory time at once, being behind in the development and debugging of modern military weapons and vehicles as well as developing doctrines for using them. Plus they’d also messed up their naval aircraft side by giving over control of the Fleet Air Arm to the RAF (who was being run for the most part by the “bomber will always get through” crowd.)
Oh, the person who proposed the rule in 1919. Winston Churchill. The person who proposed making it self-perpetuating in 1928. Winston Churchill.
