Welcome to your life
There’s no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
It’s my own design
It’s my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the
Most of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world
There’s a room where the light won’t find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do, I’ll be right behind you
Catching up with the events of today’s SCOTUS nomination hearings and I notice a distinct lack of something from the last two go arounds: Dems aren’t wasting time during their questioning trying to be a buddy to KBJ or act as if she’s the greatest victim to ever sit before Congress. Which is notable in particular because of how fucking hostile the GQP are acting towards her very presence in the building.

Who is Russia’s top field commander in Ukraine? The US isn’t sure.
cnn.com
The US has been unable to determine if Russia has designated a military commander responsible for leading the country’s war in Ukraine, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter — something that current and former defense officials say is likely a key contributor to the apparent clumsiness and disorganization of the Russian assault.
Without a top, theater-wide commander on the ground in or near Ukraine, units from different Russian military districts operating in different parts of Ukraine appear to be competing for resources rather than coordinating their efforts, according to two US defense officials.
Units participating in different Russian offensives across Ukraine have failed to connect, these sources say, and in fact, appear to be acting independently with no overarching operational design.
Russian forces also appear to be having significant communication issues. Soldiers and commanders have at times used commercial cell phones and other unsecure channels to talk to each other, making their communications easier to intercept and helping Ukraine develop targets for their own counterstrikes.
It’s all led to what these sources say has been a disjointed — and at times chaotic — operation that has surprised US and western officials.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if there’s no overall commander because there’s nobody Putin trusted enough to lead the effort without worrying that they’d try to use fame gained in a successful invasion to challenge his rule.

I wouldn’t be surprised either. This is why there are multiple intelligence agencies (FSB, GRU, SVR) instead of one KGB, because Putin can set them at each other’s throats and make sure they don’t gang up on him.

From what I understand, the Russians have no career NCOs and any officers that get “popular” or are seen to be competent tend to get stuck on the front line so they can eventually get picked off and not end up as a popular hero and therefore a threat to whoever is in power.
Everyone has done this from Stalin to Putin.
re: #270 Belafon
It’s been my fear all along that Putin’s war will be a war of starvation, both food and other supplies.
That is why Putin does not turn back from his course. Not only does he not care how many Russian soldiers die, his ideology (his own greatness, and the god-granted greatness of Russia) means he will simply wait out Ukraine until the people surrender.
Day four of Representative Jeff Fortenberry’s (R-NE1) trial for taking $30,000 cash in a brown paper bag from a Nigerian billionaire in California for a campaign contribution.
When the FBI came to his home in Lincoln, it came out today he called the cops on the FBI.
Fortenberry had just returned that week from a trip to Nairobi where he was being briefed on elephant poaching. At the time of his return, eastern Nebraska was experiencing massive flooding and Fortenberry had toured some of the affected areas that Saturday.
He wasn’t home when agents first showed up at 1 p.m. When the FBI agents returned that evening, two Lincoln police officers were waiting for them.
Fortenberry explained that he had called then-Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister because two people claiming to be federal agents had knocked on his door.
Fortenberry called police on federal agents investigating illegal campaign contributions (Omaha World-Herald)
Fortenberry insists he does not know the Nigerian.
“If it’s Ayoub, he may have given me a political contribution,” he said.
Ayoub did much more. Ayoub testified Monday that he took a brown paper bag of $30,000 cash from an associate of Nigerian billionaire Gilbert Chagoury and distributed it to friends and relatives. He had them write checks to Fortenberry’s campaign at a fundraiser the doctor held on behalf of the congressman.

Time is on Ukraine’s side; they are resupplying from their own territory and the West, while the Russians are trying to resupply through hostile territory while the route through Belarus is being sabotaged. Waiting it out means Russians surrender.
And hunkering down in defensive positions isn’t as easy as it used to be, with the use of loitering munitions (drone bombs). You may think you’re protected behind camouflage, berms, and trenches, but now little drones can snoop around for hours in your territory finding high value targets and boom.

Evan Neumann: US Capitol riot suspect gets asylum in Belarus
“I am glad Belarus took care of me. I am upset to find myself in a situation where I have problems in my own country.”
In July last year, Mr Neumann was charged on six different counts, including violent entry and assaulting police officers. He was accused of punching two police officers and using a metal barrier as a “battering ram” against police during the riots at the US Capitol building on 6 January 2021.
In other words “I want to live in a country in which participating in violent seditious uprisings is not seen as a problem.”

He is a useful idiot. As long as he advances the goals of the Church of Conservatism, he stays. The moment they don’t need him, his wife Virginia also becomes a “race traitor.”
Since conservatives view power as a pie, and if someone get a bigger slice I get a smaller one, they can never form lasting coalitions amongst themselves. They eventually turn on each other to divide the pie.

More like “I want to live in a country where fascism is not a problem.” I have no doubt Belarus would violently put down a seditious uprising.

They view everything as a pie. “Trickle-down economics”, their darling child, is based on the principle that if you give to those who already have more, they will give to those below them so that “we” (i.e. the government) can give them less, thus balancing the zero-sum scales.

I wouldn’t be surprised either. This is why there are multiple intelligence agencies (FSB, GRU, SVR) instead of one KGB, because Putin can set them at each other’s throats and make sure they don’t gang up on him.
And when Putin sacked the spy bosses, you have to wonder why they didn’t see it coming. Not very good at their jobs if they didn’t realize they were toast (and yeah, if you saw the video for why the Galactic Empire is too stupid to exist, you’d see the parallels with Putin and other autocratic regimes where underlings are too afraid to do the job, success leads to being sacked, and death awaits all).

The same argument is made in Issac Azimov’s book “Foundation and Empire,” where a person who becomes too popular for success (a general) is killed, so as not to be a threat to the Emperor.
Well, this is a fun article:

Vladimir Putin’s Russian Army has lost another commander - the 15th of Putin’s top military leaders to be killed as the country’s invasion of Ukraine heads into its second month.
Colonel Alexei Sharov became the latest high-ranking Russian official to die in what has become the country’s biggest loss of military higher-ups since World War II. His death was announced by Ukrainian armed forces on social media Tuesday.
The commander of the 810th Guards Separate Order of Zhukov Brigade in the Russian Marines, Sharov was reportedly killed in Mariupol, a city in which over 100,000 people have been trapped amid a siege by the invading Russians.
At least 902 civilians have been killed and 1,459 wounded in Ukraine as of midnight on March 19, the UN human rights office said.
Ten million people have been displaced, including nearly 3.4 million who have fled the country, the U.N. refugee agency said.
One of them looks like Colonel Klink, minus the monocle.

Investigators searching the site where a China Eastern jet crashed, killing all 132 people on board, have found the aircraft’s black box.
Liu Lusong, a spokesman for China’s aviation authority told reporters the flight recorder ‘from China Eastern MU5735 was found on March 23’.
The discovery comes after the head of aviation safety revealed pilots of the doomed flight did not respond to multiple calls from air-traffic controllers as the plane entered a fatal dive into a mountainside.
The Chinese Boeing 737-800 was carrying 123 passengers and nine crew from Kunming in Yunnan province to Guangzhou when it crashed on Monday afternoon outside the city of Wuzhou in the Guangxi region.
All 132 people on board are presumed dead after rescue workers speculated that the fire resulting from the crash had ‘totally incinerated’ the passengers and their belongings, before causing damage to the surrounding forest.
An air-traffic controllers tried to contact the pilots several times after seeing the plane’s altitude drop sharply but got no reply, Zhu Tao, director of the Office of Aviation Safety at the Civil Aviation Authority of China, said at a news conference on Tuesday evening.
‘As of now, the rescue has yet to find survivors,’ Mr Zhu said. ‘The public security department has taken control of the site.’

They view everything as a pie. “Trickle-down economics”, their darling child, is based on the principle that if you give to those who already have more, they will give to those below them so that “we” (i.e. the government) can give them less, thus balancing the zero-sum scales.
A bit of modernized feudalism. The King owns all. He gives some of it to his vassals in exchange for (usually military) service. They, in turn, give some parcels of the land granted them by the king to vassals they make of their own. And so on. Peasants? They come with the land.
Fly in the ointment are the yeomen (Free men) and especially those pesky towns with their own charters and rights.

Well this is kind of a surprise. Last Friday it was leaked that Brian Houston, the “global senior pastor” of Hillsong had had “inappropriate” interactions with two women. One was salacious text messages, the second was going into the hotel room and talking to someone not his wife Bobbie. Both were attributed to mixing of “prescription drugs and alcohol.” He’d already taken a leave of absence from Hillsong because he’s facing a criminal trial later this year for covering up his father, Frank’s, child sexual abuse.
Now comes this:
Hillsong Church founder Brian Houston resigns after internal misconduct investigation
The acting head of the church, Pastor Phil Dooley, made the announcement at an emergency all-staff meeting on Wednesday and said Hillsong will launch an “independent review” of its governance structure.
Pastor Dooley read a statement by the Hillsong global and Australian boards which said: “We would like to advise you that Pastor Brian Houston has resigned as global senior pastor of Hillsong Church and the board has accepted his resignation.”
(You might want to click over to that article just to see a picture of the current pastor, Phil Dooley, looking like a tired old hippie.)
I can’t help but wonder if the quick resignation was prompted by additional reports of women being approached/harassed by Houston and not yet made public and/or the contents of the Hillsong documentary dropping tomorrow on the Discovery Plus cable channel. Or maybe both? Or maybe something else? It’s my understanding Houston is not in Australia right now in any case, as of last weekend he was supposedly in Mexico.

As far as I can tell, new smax is not leaning pro-Putin at all and generally supports Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself.
There was an article awhile ago that Newsmax was apparently distinguishing itself from Fox and OAN by not being a pro-Putin operation. Of course, depending on how the GOP base responds, they may have switched their stand. According to the February 25th dailybeast:
The spokesperson also highlighted a recent blog post in which Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy insisted that “Newsmax supports President Biden’s efforts to stop this invasion,” while adding: “Fox News’ main host is stating categorically he is siding with Putin.” But despite Ruddy’s assertion, much of Newsmax’s programming has featured Putin-friendly commentary, including talk radio host Michael Savage denigrating the Ukrainian president—who is Jewish—as a “puppet of George Soros” and a Newsmax anchor claiming the “Russian invasion that they claim is well underway smells fishy to me.”
The six stages of racist denials:
1. I never said it

GOP are the ones who’d want to police bathrooms and check kids to see whether they’re male or female. GOP are the ones who’d deny health care to women. They’re the ones out to eliminate access to contraception.
They’re the ones who want to end the right to privacy.
So Ronna and the GOP could go fuck themselves with a rusty pitchfork sideways (and not have access to tetanus boosters).

re: #149 Kilroy was here
Nope. Entirely predictable. Russia’s military was large, but not particularly skilled in key functions - logistics and preparation. Russia’s got modern gear, but not in large numbers. Russia’s got high tech weapons, but not in large numbers.
What we’re seeing is that Russia’s military is a paper tiger, but when it faces resistance from a military that’s semi competent or better, it faces stiff resistance, and conscripts show lack of training, lack of tactics, and commanders are ill-equipped to shift tactics to address problems.
Low pay. Low morale. Poor gear condition. Poor equipment choices. Poor manpower choices. Everything has consequences.
Putin went to war with the military he thought he had, and it was Putin who threw his people into a meat grinder.
Was he lied to? Did he lie to himself (after skimming money meant for the military)? Will he mete out punishments to everyone in the supply chain because of his own failures? On that, it’s all but certain. Eliminate any possible opposition.

Flavius Stilicho a bit of a historical example of same.
Heh.
IIRC, Emperor Honorius’ jealousy of Stilicho’s influence and popularity led him to try to eliminate him: but no one wanted to have to front for the assassination plot. So Honorius simply invited the general to the palace, and when they met for their conference, pulled out a sword and slew Stilicho himself.
The contemporary equivalent, I suppose, would be Putin announcing a photo-op, and then pulling out a pistol and shooting a scapegoat general on live TV. Which the more I think about it, seems less and less of a far-fetched scenario…

No requirement.
There’s no requirement that a member of the Supreme Court be a lawyer either. Or a judge prior to nomination.
And it’s clear that a bunch of the people who claim to be lawyers/went to law school - don’t know the first thing about the jurisprudence they’re questioning about - especially the GOPers. Because they’re not even understanding the responses.

CRT is teaching white Southerners to feel bad about the fact that their plantation-owning ancestors were too lazy to do the hard work themselves and too cheap to pay people a decent wage for the hard work, so they took to purchasing hostages and forcing them into hereditary bondage to keep their plantations up and running.
That would hurt their fee-fees so bad, they had been taught it was all Rhett and Scarlett and Twelveoaks and happy slaves out on the back porch dancin’, playin’ banjos and thankin’ their masters for teachin’ them about Jesus.

Sometimes I believe it is the central fact of American political life, since these people are the real heart and soul of the Republican Party.

New digs near Pittsburgh! Floof Cat has inspected and approved. She especially appears to like the deck to watch things and the lack of neighbor cats chasing her.
Come north one day (I am between Pittsburgh and Erie on Ohio line) for a visit. Bunny and Fred would greet your cat with open paws. Well maybe not, but it could be interesting.
re: #242 Dr Lizardo
Yup, that one and the FedEx one were nasty. When I first started at the airlines, I could easily and legally bypass the metal detectors if I wanted to catch a flight. That all changed, thankfully.

Otherwise known as the Max Von Sydow Show…
;-P
Leads were pretty awful but it did allow Von Sydow, Blessed, and Topol to chew on the scenery.
