Does Trump have any attorneys left who aren’t witnesses or potential defendants?
The justice department appears to view Bobb and Corcoran as witnesses instead of potential defendants, even if that can change without warning: in a motion to the US appeals court for the 11th circuit, prosecutors wrote that Trump’s lawyers might be “witnesses to relevant events”.

It’s gotten to the point where if Trump names an attorney, the DOJ knows to look into them.

Wow. I just read the subpoena.
The select committee has shown in the past that the questions they level at witnesses or assertions they make indicate they already have all the information they need before they ask a witness to appear.
That subpoena is pretty specific. It asserts that Donald Trump orchestrated several parts of the coup attempt, had personal knowledge, and was advised against it by his own people.
It also notes all the other times presidents and former presidents were subpoenaed by Congress, to take the wind out of “unpresidented” claims by Trump.
He might not go to jail over this (Nixon didn’t either), but this will put a serious crimp in his budget if he wants to fight it out in court.

Art is not about pretty images.
Art depends upon intention, not the tool.
Anyway, if one is good at these tools then they can probably find lots of uses.
For example, if you were self-publishing a collection of short stories or poems, and you wanted a cover image, and say one of your poems is about rabbits fighting in a field, you can get the AI generator to spit out an image of rabbits fighting:

And then I searched on the office, and WHOA.

Allred asks clerks to remove ballot drop boxes (Casper Star-Tribune)
CHEYENNE — Interim Secretary of State Karl Allred has moved quickly to request the removal of absentee ballot drop boxes statewide.
Three days after he was sworn into office, he sent a letter on Friday to all 23 county clerks. In the correspondence, he asked them to consider the request, if not for this election, then for 2024 and all future elections.
Allred said while his time in the office would be short, he wanted to capitalize on the opportunity to continue the “great work of this office and oversee another successful election.”
Absentee voting began on Sept. 23 for the Nov. 8 general election.
“There is concern over the use of absentee ballot drop boxes. I know this concern is not new to you, and I’ve been apprised that only seven counties are currently using them in this general election,” Allred wrote. “I’m mindful of the fact that there have been no issues reported with the use of the drop boxes in Wyoming, but that does not alleviate the potential for abuse or destruction of ballots through use of fire or other means.”

Gotta keep up that fear of democracy.

I don’t mind the phrase “citizen scientist” because scientist, while a profession, can also be an avocation.
The problem with the phrase “democratizing art” is that art is already for the demos, (δημοσ), anyone can be an artist because part of the defining qualities of what makes us “human” is that we do art.
But the important reality that is being ignored by the vendors of these tools is that art is about intention. Art can be made by anything and anybody. What matters is what that body intends in the use of that thing.

There are a lot of people who can’t afford that $130 out of their budget, especially with all the price gouging going on right now.
The vaccines have been added to the CDC’s recommended list, so the ACA requires insurance companies to cover the cost (but that only works if you have health insurance). Pfizer says they have a programme for those who can’t afford the vaccine to get it at reduced cost or free.
The article at the Star-Herald notes that Pfizer’s vaccine surpassed Viagra to be their most-profitable product this year.

I don’t think GOP candidate for Michigan Governor Tudor Dixon knows how advertising works. If you want people to vote for you, you have to get your message out.
NBC, citing data from AdImpact, reports that Democrats have dwarfed their GOP rivals in Michigan $16.5 million to $924,000 in ad spending for the general election for governor, with Republican nominee Tudor Dixon responsible for just $25,000. A separate study by the Wesleyan Media Project has also found that Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and her allies ran over 4,600 commercials in the time between Sept. 5 and Sept. 18 while the Republicans aired all of 19 spots.
But Dixon, who has not run a single TV ad since her primary win nearly two months ago, doesn’t see this as a problem at all. “Isn’t that sad that Democrats have to spend so much money?” she asked when a reporter inquired if she was perturbed by the lack of outside support for her campaign.
The GOP has in the past supported truly awful candidates with party money for adverts. Yet they are pulling out of the New Hampshire US Senate race and don’t seem to be supporting other candidates. Is this the effect of Donald Trump draining GOP resources for his myriad of legal troubles and scams?

Second extremely local news item: I get a rental car and my Smart goes into the shop Monday to repair the damage from our 10,000-mile road trip. We’ll do the repairs in stages.
First up, safety problems: The exhaust system probably needs to be replaced after the shredded tire I hit in North Carolina, and there is something wrong with my low-beam headlights following Hurricane Fiona in Newfoundland (they only shine about twenty feet). I also need a new set of tires (those will have to be ordered).
After that, the car needs its 10,000 mile regular service. (That was done right before we started our trip. Three months later we need to do it again.)
Finally, repair the body damage from the tire and the hurricane.

In weird high school sports, an unsportswomanlike play that is completely legal under the rules of softball.
Softball rules do not prohibit a base-runner from leaving the base path, completely skipping touching the next base and taking a beeline to home plate.
That’s precisely what a Malcolm base-runner did in a Class C state tournament elimination game against Wahoo Neumann last week.
The Clippers had runners at second and third. The batter bunted down the first-base line, and the runner at third base easily scored. The runner at second ran two-thirds of the way to third, then veered left and raced for home. She was at least 10 feet on the infield side of third base.
But for her to have been called out, Neumann coaches needed to appeal. Apparently no one in the dugout saw it, and no appeal was made.
In 25 years of covering this sport, that’s a play I had never seen. Couldn’t find anyone outside of the Malcolm contingent who had ever seen that, either, let alone tried it themselves.

Kenneth Daniel, 64, was charged with facilitating solicitation of unlawful sexual conduct with a child, according to jail records from the BCSO. He was booked into the Blount County Jail on the felony charge Wednesday night.
Former teacher charged with sex acts with a student arrested in Franklin CountyAccording to case documents, the alleged crimes took place between January 2020 and earlier this month.
A seven-year-old victim told her grandfather that Daniel, who is a pastor at First Baptist Church of Chalkville, had been sexually abusing her.
The girl reported that Daniel had touched her private parts numerous times at his residence, a pool party and the church.

Neighbor’s flagpole halyard is slapping in the wind. I’m reminded of living in the marina and hearing that in the night and getting pissed off and going over to the noisy boat and loosing the halyard and draping it over the yard arm to keep it from slapping the mast. Good times.
I tested my bike pedals today. The pins grab so good I have to lift my foot off to reposition it. There is no such thing as lightly sliding the foot over for better position. I feel like my shoes are glued to the pedals. Two thumbs up.
Since we modified birdies to birbies, gonna call this a beagle! Still grinding away at the salt mines. A lot of great grant opportunities for our communities. Would rather be busy with this than not at all. Enjoy the weekend Lizardz!

There is no doubt that DeSantis is playing into the anti-gay bigotry found in various populations in his state, and that includes many people from Spanish-speaking locales whose families migrated to Florida.
Politicians who do this win because the voters think it’s the others at whom the demagogue targets.
We should always keep in mind that bigotry and othering is very common in us humans, regardless of groups with which we affiliate.

Beideck: Controversial play at state softball was technically legal, but it was out of line
To the best of my knowledge (former Women’s C League softball coach & umpire in the 80’s,) missing a base has always been an infraction that makes the runner out, but only if appealed. Like leaving base too early on a pop fly and several other things, it’s something that the other team has to watch for and appeal, and yeah, some teams play that way but not many because most teams assign people to watch for missed bases, leaving too early, etc.

DeSantis is a National Socialist. He has been using the power of government and Socialism this past year to ingratiate himself to large swaths of the Florida population through direct money handouts, siding with various consumer efforts against corporations and welcoming $Billions Federal hurricane relief.
He has played easy political cards while abandoning huge planks in traditional Republican talking points the last 50 years. He has however remained steadfast in his “anti-woke” rhetoric which plays well with misogynists and cultures that champion macho attitudes above reason and academic success. This will of course come back to bite anyone not Mayflower white and male. This will come back to bite them as national laws are passed and corrupt SCOTUS edicts expressly encouraging business and people to start discriminating once again on the basis of color, sex and gender. DeSantis, National Socialist, wants to be in the White House to make this happen.
re: #96 Florida Panhandler
National socialism has little to do with socialism (like DPRK has little to do with democracy), and socialism is not synonymous to wealth redistribution, or specifically to handouts, so unless DeSantis was assuring that the workers own the means of production, he was not using socialism.
re: #99 Nyet
National Socialism defines itself as whatever is useful as a means to power for power’s sake. Here is Hitler himself on “Socialism”
Socialism is the science of dealing with the common weal. Communism is not Socialism. Marxism is not Socialism. The Marxians have stolen the term and confused its meaning. I shall take Socialism away from the Socialists. Socialism is an ancient Aryan, Germanic institution. Our German ancestors held certain lands in common. They cultivated the idea of the common weal. Marxism has no right to disguise itself as socialism. Socialism, unlike Marxism, does not repudiate private property. Unlike Marxism, it involves no negation of personality, and unlike Marxism, it is patriotic.
Whatever DeSantis or any other Republican assumes the mantle of President, they will implement an American-style National Socialism. They won’t call it that. It will be known as “Real America” or “Christian Nationalism”… any word salad that is a means to power, corruption and grift at the direct expense of minorities and women.

Biden says he intends to run again in 2024, and has the first lady’s support https://t.co/ttH0Yf8qXS
— Post Politics (@postpolitics) October 22, 2022
President Biden said Friday that while he has not made a formal decision about running for reelection in 2024, he intends to do so — citing previous encouragement from his late son, Beau, and revealing that he has the backing of his wife, first lady Jill Biden.
In an interview that aired Friday, MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart quoted Biden’s 2017 autobiography, “Promise Me, Dad,” in which the president wrote that Beau had insisted he run for the office in 2016, saying that his father had a duty to do so. Capehart asked what words Beau — who died of brain cancer in 2015 — would have for those who say Biden should not run again because of his age.
“The only reason to be involved in public life is: Can you make life better for other people?” Biden answered. “Depending on who the opponent is, if they have a view that is so the antithesis of what I believe democracy [is], and I believe is good for average Americans, then, his argument was, ‘Dad, you have an obligation to do something.’ “
When asked if the first lady supports a 2024 run, Biden nodded and paused before providing a full answer. “My wife thinks that we’re doing something very important and that I shouldn’t walk away from it,” he said.
But Biden said he was not yet formally declaring his candidacy, because once he does, a “whole series of regulations kick in, and I have to treat myself as a candidate from that moment on.
“I have not made that formal decision, but it’s my intention. My intention to run again. And we have time to make that decision,” he said…

Again, they’re saying the quiet parts out loud.
The left will only stop when conservatives stop them, which means conservatives will have to discard outdated and irrelevant notions about “small government.” The government will have to become, in the hands of conservatives, an instrument of renewal in American life — and in some cases, a blunt instrument indeed.
To stop Big Tech, for example, will require using antitrust powers to break up the largest Silicon Valley firms. To stop universities from spreading poisonous ideologies will require state legislatures to starve them of public funds. To stop the disintegration of the family might require reversing the travesty of no-fault divorce, combined with generous subsidies for families with small children. Conservatives need not shy away from making these arguments because they betray some cherished libertarian fantasy about free markets and small government. It is time to clear our minds of cant.

I went to go look up buying and programming drones for these, and ones that will last that long are in the $2,000 range a piece. There are companies that you can pay to do your show, and I estimate that show cost the owner north of $100,000.

Yep, checks are just Not A Thing in the Eurozone. You’re expected to do an electronic transfer to a bank account. If you’re an old, you can fill out a form and take it to the bank and they’ll do it. Since you can’t withdraw money with a bank account number, bank account numbers are posted everywhere publicly. For the most part, financial things are “push” here and not “pull”.
I did get a check once here for weird reasons, so they do exist. You have to take it to the bank and they’ll do a bit of a double take, but will process it.

The Japanese yen at one point hit 150.19 to the dollar on Thursday, but the Bank of Japan apparently intervened (however central banks do that, I’m not an economist) to push the exchange rate down to 147 today. The yen has lost a significant amount of value since March, when it was hovering around the 115 yen to dollar mark. The BoJ has done this once before, at the 145 yen mark a month ago, which temporarily halted the slide of the yen and pushed it back to 141, but then it dropped some more. It’s my understanding that these interventions are the first time since 1998 that the BoJ has done this.
Does this affect my trip? No. When I started planning, the yen was much stronger. A difference of three or five cents per dollar is not a showstopper for me, but on the Japanese side, it has got to suck.

Yeah, but those are on the bank side. This is making a payment to the HOA electronically, and being charged for the privilege of doing so. Ah, NOPE. I know ACH is the absolute cheapest way to process a payment and being asked to pay is personally offensive to me. (Yeah, yeah, yeah…)

There is an unenforceable honour system that politics relied on. I’ve written & professed for 7 years that assuming bad faith in MPs was dangerous and wrong. I’ve spoken of how Tory MPs too want to change the world for the better. I was largely wrong.

I no longer feel burning anger about the last year, I feel sad. The country is a game of tin soldiers to many in Government. Many more than I thought. Politics isn’t simple, it’s not easy to practice & it should have progress at its core. How sad that so many have been so failed

re: #164 BigPapa
I got no problem with private persons doing historical reenactments. My issue with the Confederacy is when flags, monuments and regalia are displayed on public property or paid for by public funds.
And even then, no problem if they are displayed in their proper context at a museum or historical site and do not constitute any form of official endorsement or glorification of the Confederacy.
Context for this: The membership of the Conservative Party support Boris Johnson, whilst the MPs they help elect would rather go for Rishi Sunak.
Tory dirty tricks row! I’m told some MPs are being threatened with de-selection by their associations if they don’t vote for Boris Johnson in leadership contest!

It’s basically a repeat of the situation where the MPs supported Sunak over Liz Truss, but the membership overruled that by supporting Truss.

So they let Truss take the fall for implementing the very policies that BoJo or Sunak would have implemented…

But she didn’t implement them, did she? Just tried to do so and failed spectacularly.

Not the best idea. Whether you think one should take age into account or not, it’s liable to become a huge factor that may decide the election.

At least 41 mobilized have died since the start of the mobilization.

Are the politics not similar to here in the U.S. today? Are the Tories still a “conservative” party, or are they a “populist” party? The GOP not really the same anymore. Oh sure, they’ll still give breaks to their big business donors, when they have the power. But the message they’re selling is more Kari Lake than Ronald Reagan.
A Russian IT specialist has been living in a forest for a month, escaping the mobilization.
Respect.
Facebook appears to have removed the “Snooze” option, at least for posts in my timeline.
If so, that is unfortunate, as I have “friends” who endlessly post images they like, or memes that turn them on. I don’t want to unfriend them because someday I may want to contact them.
Sigh…
And with Twitter looking increasingly vulnerable, I think my social media engagement is going to go through another transition.
re: #129 Eclectic Cyborg
Somebody’s going to Hell.
re: #189 Eclectic Cyborg
When I ramble on about worldview collapse I have perhaps under explained one key aspect: language.
We are a language-centric species. We have a deep need to communicate in the social group (we are social animals.)
From this basic need has arisen the magic of words. Words are magical.
A great many stories are based on this idea.
And so are religions.
Invocation of words is typical in religions.
Words are powerful, they are magic.
Written words have an additional magical power.
So when someone really believes in the magic of certain words they can be manipulated using those same words.

Also, the genealogy community at large has pretty much transitioned away from their own websites to using Facebook. Hence I’m there.

The Tories are a party of the ruling elite who appeal to the base instincts of the broad masses to gain popular appeal. They want to privatize everything to pay for more tax cuts for high-income earners. So yeah, lots of parallels there.

Sounds reasonable. This is not a guy you want back on the streets.
A man in Michigan is guilty of first-degree murder and faces life in prison without parole.
Mark David Latunski, 53, pleaded guilty in September to the killing of a 25-year-old man he met via Grindr. However, his “open murder” plea meant it came down to a judge to determine whether it be first-degree, second-degree, or manslaughter.
Shiawassee County Judge Matthew J. Stewart listened to a day and a half of testimony. He issued his decision October 19. The facts of the case are particularly gruesome.
