Another Exceptional Tiny Desk Concert: Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason

One measure of an artist’s popularity is how long it takes to book them for a Tiny Desk concert. In the case of British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, it took about three years. Granted, the pandemic got in the way, but ever since his 2018 breakthrough performance at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, he’s been — needless to say — in demand. Nearly 2 billion people worldwide saw his royal performance on television.

At the Tiny Desk, Kanneh-Mason played for only a handful of NPR staffers, and the performance felt like a direct communication from his luminous cello (built in 1700) to our heartstrings. It was especially true in Kanneh-Mason’s own arrangement of “Myfanwy,” the mournful Welsh folk song the cellist first heard from his grandmother. Accompanying himself with left hand pizzicato, Kanneh-Mason makes his instrument sing like a sad old Welshman with a tear in his eye.

Aside from his expressive playing, Kanneh-Mason excels at arranging pop songs for his instrument. “No Woman, No Cry,” one of his calling cards, explores the tender and bittersweet side of the Bob Marley classic.

Still only 23, Kanneh-Mason’s stature commands the attention of composers. Last year, the fine young Brit Edmund Finnis wrote a set of solo preludes for Kanneh-Mason. The music reveals the cello’s many voices, from growling urgency to supple soliloquy to full-throated cry.

While we can’t guarantee 2 billion views on our platforms, those who do watch this Tiny Desk performance will witness a rising young star who, whether he knows it or not, represents nothing less than the future of classical music.

SET LIST
Bob Marley: “No Woman, No Cry” (arr. Sheku Kanneh-Mason)
Edmund Finnis: Preludes I-III for solo cello
Joseph Parry: “Myfanwy” (arr. Sheku Kanneh-Mason)

MUSICIANS
Sheku Kanneh-Mason: cello

There are certain teams from certain cities that I do not care for because of varied reasons.
Then there is the Dallas Cowboys.
I detest them. Since I was a child.
They got away with murder. Announcers wet themselves piling on the praise and glorification of “Americas Team.”
So I get great happiness seeing this.

Believe me, no atheist can get away from the constant proselytism of Christians. 1 Peter 3:15 demands they mind your business.

The new pastor at the Lutheran Church across the street (the last one retired a month ago) came across the street to tell my wife, who was working with the village maintenanc mechanic marking underground pipes in our yard, that she couldn’t vote for me because I’m going to hell and so is my wife.

Sorry that you had to deal with small minded bigots who have difficulty separating reality and fantasy. Interesting that she was so comfortable telling you this. All I could think of was Stonekettle’s comment “No more self-awareness than a dog licking its own asshole in the middle of a public sidewalk”.

It might be interesting to see what other groups she has condemned to Hell. All without even knowing them.

Just thinking about Mark Twain’s observation:

On the way to work my subway line was interrupted due to Pershing Square station being closed for “police activity”. That station has illustrated how mean the streets of LA can be. The news told me a stabbing victim had been found at about 1:30 am there on the platform. On the way home I went into the station as usual and immediately I saw a cleaning crew who were dealing with the massive bloodstain of the former crime scene.

It’s so damn sad how cruel we are to one another. So my personal thanks and gratitude this year is about the opposite qualities many of us have. Love, kindness, and respect for fellow humans.

Yikes! I thought at first that this was some kind of tasteless joke based on Jones’s resemblance to the boy in the photo. Nope. It is authentic and Jones admits that it is. He claims that he took no part in the taunting and bigotry, but it is an extraordinary photo nonetheless.

The Bible also commands that anyone who eats pork, or works on a Saturday, or wears clothes made of two different threads be put to death. Pretty sure that shirt she’s wearing in that video qualifies her for the last one.

Actually I don’t have a lot of people trying to proselytize me. Nowdays it’s because I live in a liberal area with lots of atheists, but even back when we lived in The Great American Heartland it didn’t happen often. Possibly because I’m scary or something. ;)

Sorry that you had to experience this.

Reminds me of two of the most disturbing events in my life. The first was finding a neighbor dead from suicide. The second was learning later that weekend that there are multiple companies in the Minneapolis/St Paul area that specialize in cleaning homes where suicides, murder, and natural deaths have occurred. The thought that there’s enough work for even one group would have been enough to disturb me but learning there was more than one was an extremely stomach churning realization.

I dunno.

Chad Loder’s back but was apparently told multiple things about why they were suspended. The “offending” tweet pointed out the Tucker Carlson’s guest the other night has a social media full of open Nazism.

I honestly don’t know how the automation or the algorithm works, so I don’t know how it could be flipped. One possibility…one I’d seriously consider is that right wingers mass reported them.

Then again, Twitter could now be The Great and Powerful Oz: how would you differentiate the algorithm impersonal action from the preferences of a kook CEO that acts as personal tech support for a bunch of fascist creeps?

On the contrary they are acting exactly like “civilized” people: a writhing pile of venality, weird creepy sex stuff, and bloodlust that casts its milky syphilitic eyes at the rest of the world while jabbing it’s finger in accusation…because—obviously—everybody else must secretly be up to something far worse and thus should be condemned to death by frottage and pickpocketing.

All of the shit conservatives are doing to other citizens were field tested overseas: the slander, the violence, the sex abuse, the exploitation, and the theft. And, yeah, I do have to admit, it’s fun to look down and see a Peregrine Falcon, Marsh Hawk, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Common Tern, Coopers Hawk, Kite, Sparrow landing, Storm Petrel, Hawk landing, and a Screech Owl on a branch on the fret board as I play Foo Fighters, Blondie, The Ramones and the like ;)

Minutemen is one of my favorite rock ‘n’ roll music of all time. They were on the same label as Hüsker Dü, SST, at the same time, early 80s.

I hate to “rank” deaths of rock musicians but I think D. Boon dying was equivalent to Jimi Hendrix dying. Tremendous blow to a rock ‘n’ roll potential, forever squashed.

I can see it but to me the worst moment of potential squandered was when The Replacements sabotaged themselves when they were on SNL. They should have been as big as REM _at_the_least_ but Paul was terrified of success. Didn’t know him then but my Ex did and I understand where he was at.

Goddamn, man. Shit. We could take this argument further in time to Kurt Cobain, who killed himself right when he became “Beatles” famous. Kurt Cobain was the first “celebrity” death that truly affected me. I was on the cusp on my 12th birthday and for that school year I listened to the album “Nevermind” everyday, literally.

Having been active on tumblr for the past decade, I would say that tumblrites would’ve created something like Goncharov anyway without the impetus of any influx of refugees from twitter.

This is the kind of thing tumblr denizens do. Just a few months back, a large subset of users was obsessed with “Dracula Daily.”

The Unbelievable Rise and Fall of a Pervert Conman Who Faked His Death (Daily Beast, November 18, 2022)

He was arrested by the Scottish police after he was hospitalised with Covid-19.

He was also the poster-child for “false accusations of rape” at A Voice for Men.

—=00=—

Scottish authorities have ruled a man calling himself Arthur Knight is in fact American sex offender Nick Alahverdian. Now, his victims open up on why he needs to be behind bars.

Last week, a dark-haired man wearing a pinstripe suit, shiny leather shoes, and round black glasses was wheeled into a court room in Edinburgh, Scotland—one hand shackled to a police officer.

He said he was Arthur Knight, an Irishman who had never been to the United States. Authorities told the Scottish court he was actually 35-year-old Nicholas Alahverdian—an accused conman from Rhode Island wanted on rape charges in Utah.

The judge ruled that there is no Arthur Knight—only Alahverdian living under a false name. Authorities say Knight is just the latest of Alahverdian’s 16 known aliases, which include Nicholas Rossi, Nicholas Brown, Arthur Brown, and Arthur Knight-Brown. He was identified through fingerprints and DNA, as well as an analysis of his distinctive tattoos.

“I am ultimately satisfied on the balance of probabilities that Mr Knight is indeed Nicholas Rossi, the person sought for extradition by the United States,” Judge Norman McFadyen determined after a three-day hearing.

He faces deportation to Utah on the extradition hearing.

NightCafe has daily challenges for AI “art”, and Tuesdays was “castles”.

My submission:

I thought it pretty good but it did not score well by the voters.

But looking at the winners: creator.nightcafe.studio

And it is clear they are all from the same genre - fantasy.

And not just any fantasy, but a dreamy, romantic other-worldly fantasy.

And they all look very much alike.

And therein lay the problem with AI “art” and why it is not art: people use it just as fancy copying machines.

No wonder, really, when one looks at Twitter and all the AI “art” submissions. Half of them are from teenage boys who think women should have 800lb breasts.

The British found it necessary to put this out, explaining consent in terms of tea.

Now I can tell you from experience that unless you protest loudly and vehemently, reminding your in-laws that you do not drink tea unless you are ill, you will have multiple cups of tea forced on you in Britain in any social situation as they have have no concept of someone who does not drink tea.

Or is it they way I dress?

More on these AI “art” tools:

The most popular is Stable Diffusion, which one can download to work on your PC if you have one with suitable capabilities.

If not, there are several online versions.

Now it’s called “stable” because the assertion is that if one puts in the exact same prompts and variables one will get the same image as before. (Other AI use more randomness.)

And on the whole I have found that to be true - if one uses the same instance of the program.

But when I compare two online versions of Stable Diffusion, with the identical settings, there are small differences.

Here is an image (superhero - it was yesterday’s contest at NightCafe) from Stable Diffusion using the instantiation at OpenArt:

Using the exact same prompt and variables (seed, sampling method, iterations, etc.) here is the image from DreamStudio:

Now, the DreamStudio version is a PNG while the OpenArt version is a jpeg (meaning it has been compressed) and the compression may account for the great contrast in the OpenArt version, but if one looks at the hair one can see noticeable differences.

So while Stable Diffusion will return an identical image for identical inputs, that is true only for the same instantiation.

Why different instantiations differ I suspect may have to do with the random generation (based on the seed), as different hardware/operating systems will have different tools even if starting from the same integer (seed.)

Which is why in the new Stable Diffusion 2 (released software but not yet active at the online sites) has totally redone the training set, excluding NSFW material.

And the young males are whining about that last part because that means their cheap porn ambitions are thwarted.

Finally convinced my small family to return to my tradition of homemade pizza on Thanksgiving Day. The more recent family tradition of homemade lasagna has been pushed to tomorrow. No one in the family is fond of turkey and there are too few of us anyway to justify one.

I started my personal Thanksgiving pizza traditional after a couple of years of being invited to other people’s dysfunctional family holiday meals. People felt sorry for the single co-worker all alone during a holiday but a couple years of other people’s drunk uncles and worse was enough to stop accepting invitations . I had stopped driving to family in ND for Thanksgiving a few years out of college because it was inevitable I would hit a hundred miles of glare ice (Christmas road travel was always more manageable with snow and blowing snow than iced-over roads).

When I moved to Moscow in the early 90’s, I was advised to get an apartment on the fifth floor. I asked why, and was told that it was not too far to walk up when the elevator broke down.

I asked why not the first or second floor and they said to avoid that because of the smell when the sewage backed up in the cellar…

It was always an article of faith that homosexuals, since they cannot reproduce (and since God could not create such an abomination) had to recruit people into their ranks and of course the best “prey” were the young and innocent among us.

Meanwhile in the Republican Party Stronghold of Russia…

Russia’s parliament on Thursday passed a law banning the promotion of LGBTQ “propaganda” to all age groups, extending an existing ban exclusively concerning children. The new rules mean that any event or material—including books, films, and adverts—considered an attempt to promote homosexuality could be punished by a hefty fine. Individuals could receive a $6,600 penalty, while legal entities can be fined $82,100. Foreigners who fall foul of the rule can be detained for 15 days and expelled from the country. Gay rights activists say the move is a bid to oppress minorities in Russia, while lawmakers who back the law argue it’s designed to protect Russians against “un-Russian” Western values. “LGBT today is an element of hybrid warfare and in this hybrid warfare we must protect our values, our society and our children,” Alexander Khinshtein, one of the law’s central backers, said last month.

When I first came to Moscow, the Art Theater was producing a version of Jean Genet’s The Maids with an all-male cast in drag.

Nyet tells me it was still running a few years back, but I guess that will no longer be allowed under current legislation.

(There is an anecdote about how Samuel Goldwyn Jr. heard about that play when it came out in the 40’s and wanted to buy the rights.

“We can’t do that”, said one of his managers, “it’s about lesbians!”

To which Goldwyn replied, “So in the film we’ll make them Americans!”

A new report from the Arizona Republic sheds more light on the coalition of voters who sunk Trump-backed Kari Lake’s hope of becoming Arizona’s next governor.

Essentially, the newspaper found that a significant number of Republican voters in the state crossed over to back Democrat Katie Hobbs in this year’s elections, and they also helped put nails in the coffins of fellow MAGA candidates Blake Masters and Mark Finchem.

Chuck Coughlin, president and CEO of political consulting firm HighGround, explained to the Arizona Republic that many Republican voters in the state wanted more moderate conservatives such as the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) instead of bomb-throwing right-wingers like Lake.

“There are practical Republicans,” he said. “They want government to work… They’re not part of this conspiratorial environment and partisan behavior.”

One can only hope…

Yes, and though it runs parallel to Fundamentalist Christianity, it also simply adopts whatever features will advance its cause of concentrating power in the hands of those that “deserve” it.

And of course, they are the ones who define who is worthy.

Which, given:

The Christmas tree
Easter
Quinceaneras

And a few other things adopted into Christianity, makes them sound the same.

We’re (almost) all solidly liberal and lack interesting interpersonal conflicts so it should be a pleasant dinner.

Good and gracious God,
There is a tension that comes
with giving thanks.

Even as we recognize
and are grateful for
the blessings in our lives,
we are confronted with
enjoying our abundance
as we recognize the reality
that there are those
who have far too little.

Even as we celebrate a holiday
with roots which reach back
to the beginnings of our nation,
we are confronted with
the reality of
the genocide and slavery
upon which it was found.

We do not forget these things.
We do not celebrate them.
We do not give thanks for them.

In this our tale of Thanksgiving,
they are the terrible storyline
which we must not forget.
Our pride,
our arrogance
and our pursuit of possessions
have constantly stood
alongside of our blessings
as a reminder.

They remind us why we give thanks.

They remind us that life
is sacred and fragile
and that we
are its biggest threats.
They remind us that we do not want
to be those people again,
people who lord over others
and are self-adsorbed and self-important.
They remind us to appreciate
what we do have.

So, we give thanks.

We give thanks for this moment.
We give thanks for the things
that are right about the world
right now,
in this moment.
We give thanks for family and friends.
We give thanks for love and laughter.
We give thanks for grace and good company.

We give thanks for the tension
we find in a day like today
because it provides us the insight
and the motivation
to create better tomorrows.
Not just for ourselves,
not just for our families,
not just for our friends
but for the world.
So, today and everyday,
we give thanks
and we work to create a world
that gives more reasons
for which to be thankful.

Amen

I don’t cook much beef but a few times a year I do a ribeye in my cast iron pan. I’ve found that salting my steak for 1hr minimum up to 24hrs maximum makes it better. The salt sucks out moisture, the crystals dissolve, then the salt laden moisture absorbs back into the meat. Basically a dry brine. The sodium tenderizes the meat all the way through and delivers salt flavor throughout.

I see so many cooking videos where they put a bunch of salt on the steak right before the pan. They’re missing out. I don’t like my stuff salty so I don’t put that much on but I def give it time.

Sour Cream Apple Pie

I got invited to a friend’s place for dinner. So a pie has been made and is ready to go.

(Sour Cream Apple Pie - with a sugar/cinnamon topping that you normally use the broiler to melt a bit - but it’s a glass pie pan so I had to use other means to get it spread. Not a pie I make often now due to the sugar/carb hit, but my friend requested it specifically.)

I also thought about trying the recipe using a sugar substitute, but the substitute I have that is not supposed to be baked about 350 degrees. And the recipe calls for 400 degrees. So I opted to not experiment with a dish intended for a holiday dinner.)

Elkhorn man says he’s no ‘super hero’ but a person who helped someone in need (Nebraska Examiner, November 21, 2022)

LINCOLN — After watching a semi-trailer truck slam into an SUV, pinning it against a concrete barrier along Interstate 80, Frank Axiotes said he didn’t think twice.

He immediately pulled over, told his wife and son to call 911, and charged across the Interstate to the flaming accident scene.

TL;DR, he ran across the freeway in traffic, broke out a rear window to rescue a nine year-old boy, then with the help of another broke out the windshield to rescue the boy’s sister, the eighteen year-old driver of the SUV.

Shortly after the rescue, the SUV exploded multiple times.

Gov. Pete Ricketts awarded him the Carnegie Medal for Heroism on behalf of the Carnegie Foundation.

The second rescuer has never been identified.

The parents aren’t “illegal.” Crossing the border without presenting at a customs house is a midemeanour subject to deportation and a fine under $50. Asylum claims are exempt and can be made anywhere in the country.

Evading a customs house to avoid a declaration is a felony (the crime is smuggling, not illegal crossing).

Here’s a good video on the history of the Satanic Panic - it goes back into that particular moral panic’s origins in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and continues today through the QAnon conspiracy theory.

My governor is a moran. A billionaire, but a moran.

By the way, that’s also a lie. All conservatives lie. The Army exceeded its recruiting goals. The Nebraska National Guard fell short, because people don’t want to enlist so he can use them for political stunts on the Mexican border with Texas.

OK, now it’s a holiday. My sister called me from Cartagena, where she went to be at a wedding this weekend. She’d not even in the wedding and she’s supposed to wear a long formal dress. And the hotel it was going to be at was damaged in a storm last week, so there is some confusion and lots of extra transportation involved. But no Thanksgiving in the mix.

Could someone please remind me when Eric Trump was waterboarded?

Gee, I just can’t remember when that happened! 🤔

It must have been on the same occasion that Sean Hannity underwent waterboarding to demonstrate that it wasn’t torture.

It must have been on the same occasion that Sean Hannity underwent waterboarding to demonstrate that it wasn’t torture.

Christopher Hitchens did; and the experience led him to change his mind. Before he believed that waterboarding could not be classified as torture, but seemingly extreme interrogation; afterwards he stated that “If waterboarding does not constitute torture, then there is no such thing as torture”. Hannity has always been a coward, willing to say anything, but not willing to follow up, and not willing to admit he was wrong.

We get a lot of geese around here, maybe it’s the surrounding grass-seed fields. They usually make a little noise as they fly over, so I look up. Yesterday, besides a couple of the usual V’s, I saw a huge egalitarian flock, flying in a long, long side-by-side line, wingtip to wingtip, with a slight curve at each end. No bossy goose at the front. Maybe not so aerodynamic, but there was no wind.

Our neighborhood pond has a small gaggle (5 -10) of resident Canadian geese, which spend a lot of time standing in the street. During seasonal migration the number expands from time to time.

Today I saw ~50 waiting to stand in the street.

The name of a 19th century Russian playwright.
