On Tuesday, Axios reported that Republicans are facing a crossroads as far-right and anti-abortion groups are fighting over whether, and how, to go after fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

“Republicans have largely insisted that fertility treatments aren’t at risk from the proliferation of new state abortion restrictions. But anti-abortion groups remain deeply concerned with the use of embryos in IVF and back tighter regulations on providers,” reported Caitlin Owens and Oriana Gonzalez. “The divisions may create a thorny path for 2024 hopefuls intent on bolstering their anti-abortion bona fides while still hoping to differentiate themselves from the rest of the field.”

In a similar way with gay marriage, a lot of bigots are realizing that a line must be drawn somewhere. I don’t think bigots in general have the ability to come together in agreement on anything. You know, there’s always another person involved in an agreement, and there’s always something wrong with a different person.

This is a Miami story, although the person who financed this endeavor has since moved from Miami.

There’s a documentary on Netflix, “Pepsi, where’s my jet.”

I was surfing Netflix - saw the title - & remembered the Miami law firm my wife worked for, & another firm I was working with both had a client involved in negotiaitng purchase of a Harrier jet from PepsiCo.

Started watching the documentary, & fuck!, it’s our guy Todd Hoffman.

At the time, Todd lived in Miami, and one of the more interesting guys I’ve ever met that didn’t make his bucks in the import business. Todd’s Miami attorney in the documentary, Larry Schantz is who my wife worked for the time. My involvement with Todd was re a different matter

Negotiations with Pepsi broke down - pulled out of the matter - and a replacement “better call Saul” litigation attorney became involved.

The denouement by the Pepsi add agency guy at the end was a complete surprise.

If each fertilized embryo is a person and killing it is murder, then IVF as it is traditionally conducted cannot be allowed to continue, ironically making it harder for women who want to have babies to do so.

i’ve been arguing about something like this for 20 years:

The harvesting of eggs is fine. Unfertilized eggs can be frozen and/or discarded. Eggs are not life.

Eggs can only be fertilized if implantation is certain, therefore eggs can be fertilized and immediately implanted.

Eggs cannot be fertilized and frozen unless there is 100% certainty that every egg fertilized outside the body will be implanted. (Extremely stiff penalties if eggs are not used, as life has now been destroyed).

This is not to say that the IVF process must succeed in a pregnancy, but if a zygote is formed, it must be implanted and given a chance.

Whether IVF is playing god as far as conception is concerned, is not an issue - only the point at which life begins and therefore must be protected is.

if you’re gonna be draconian, be prepared to go all the way.

Something else is that they usually implant multiple fertilized eggs to increase the chances that at least one of them will successfully develop. This often results in the woman having several fertilized eggs successfully implanted, then in order to protect the health of the mother and increase the likelihood of a fetus developing into a healthy baby through a full term pregnancy, some of the fetuses will be aborted. Can’t have that if abortion is murder; instead you have to risk a premature labor and all of the babies dying or suffering severe disabilities due to premature birth.

re: #69 Dangerman

if you’re gonna be draconian, be prepared to go all the way.

because the conclusion of all of this is that for consistency and to protect the unborn, there must be an immediate and massive crusade on the same scale and with the same fervor and zeal as was put into the anti-abortion issue. The same effort must be put into legislating these matters and they all must be legislated consistently.

First, pro-life with regards to abortion must be redefined as no exceptions, because exceptions kill. Then other practices (contraceptives (except pure barriers), ivf, escr, etc), and other similar ones must be unequivocally illegal.

If the line is “life begins at conception” then there can be no excuse to selectively pick and choose which types of post-fertilization tampering are allowed.

clearly, because it’s untenable and an electoral loser, it’ll never happen.

and that’s the hypocrisy of it all:
- if life begins at conception, then any legislated exception is murder.

- if we hold fast to that, we’ll never win an election

The pilots are anonymous, and this group of nearly 1,000 volunteers are flying women needing abortion care from their home denial state to a state where they can receive medical care. The man who started is (also anonymous, for safety reasons, of course), has resigned his job and works full time managing the requests for help and the volunteers. It’s a great story.

In post-Roe America, pilots take the abortion battle to the skies
nprillinois.org

The pilot, who is in his mid 50s, is one of nearly 1,000 volunteer hobby pilots who have offered to fly with Elevated Access, an Illinois nonprofit established in April after signs began to point to the U.S. Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade. The nonprofit was founded by a former IT manager and pilot named Mike; like the pilot I flew with on a windy November morning, he gives only his first name for personal safety reasons.

The idea for a volunteer organization that would transport women seeking abortion care, and physicians who provide it, to states where it is safe and legal to do so, began with a volunteer stint Mike did at Midwest Access Coalition. “As a pilot, I was looking for some way that I could use my skills to help people,” Mike says. “And being someone who believes in someone’s ability to make their own choices, I thought helping people access abortion could be it.”

re: #94 Patricia Kayden

Is Mediaiate a reliable source? That article seems fishy. Trump has met with White Supremacists before. He had White Supremacists in the White House working for him. How was he punked?

NBC news originally reported the story: nbcnews.com

You’ll have to reload the page to get all the code refreshed before trying to upload a webp image.

Bah.

And I know — hope — that you are both being expostulate. This shit pisses me off.

They use race to get the racists to vote against abortion, and they use abortion to get the forced-birth people to vote against minorities.

I can’t stand any of them.

re: #93 retired cynic

The pilots are anonymous, and this group of nearly 1,000 volunteers are flying women needing abortion care from their home denial state to a state where they can receive medical care. The man who started is (also anonymous, for safety reasons, of course), has resigned his job and works full time managing the requests for help and the volunteers. It’s a great story.

Maybe in some ways, but it’s also an incredible condemnation of our country that such measures are necessary to help women in 2022.

[Embedded content]

a local (NYC) woke-washing effort, that DiBlasio fell for during his campaign, was an “animal-rights activist group” that wanted to outlaw the horse-drawn carriages; they’re not just in Central Park, they also do occasional street rides. Tourists take them from near the park to the theater, or to a restaurant…

Turns out, these people who were so concerned about the horses… were bankrolled by a real estate developer who had his eye on the 8 square blocks of riverfront property where the stables are located…

I have to say, Post is REALLY nice. Just got on there.

I just got a letter saying they were backed up and short handed. They are making a plea for engineers, should be plenty around.

re: #106 Dangerman

iirc then nobody who fought having to testify has actually won

but they slowed things down considerably, delayed indictments and/or verdicts, which could have made a difference in mid-term results.

When you know you have a losing case, that in itself is a partial win.
