INSIDE THE NEW RIGHT, WHERE PETER THIEL IS PLACING HIS BIGGEST BETS
They’re not MAGA. They’re not QAnon. Curtis Yarvin and the rising right are crafting a different strain of conservative politics.

This is from last spring, but I didn’t read it at the time, and hoo boy, these guys are off the wall. The problem is all the money behind them.

Well I was hoping that the rain would kick in and stop the guns and fireworks. Nope. They both started here in Koreatown at 610PM…

The snow water equivalent at Palisades Tahoe is 25 inches right now. The ski area surpassed 200 inches of snow tonight, by like, three feet. Lots of snow.

It’s barely past 8:30PM here and my jackass neighbors are already setting off fireworks. My poor dog is visibly nervous but keeping a stiff upper lip for the moment.

That said, it is all soft tissue stuff. I fortunately didn’t land directly on my pelvis. I know a dude who did that, he didn’t ski again for two years.

At least you don’t get road rash from a skiing crash, usually. That’s the fucking worst. I have scars.

When I rode, I had Kevlar reinforced riding jeans and shirt to avoid that. Didn’t help when one night I was tired and tried to kickstart it while it was in first gear. Crunch!

teleskiguy  Dec 31, 2022 • 6:53:59pm

There is a proper way to fall if you happen to lose balance on skis or a snowboard. You want to make sure whatever’s attached to your feet end up downhill and to self-arrest, lean into the mountain, stop yourself!

That’s what I did on Thursday. And I’m just nursing a bruise as opposed to any number of crazy things that can happen. I’m shooting for Monday at Arapahoe Basin. 🤞

Totally fair! Oof!

I rode my rode bike up to the top of Mount Evans at a quite weird time, 16 August 2020. Road Closed in the middle of the summer because of a pandemic emergency. Open to bikes, though. I saw more mountain goats than people that day. And NO CARS!!! It was quite remarkable.

We’re finally get rain here in the bay area like we used to get before the drought took hold. Not terribly heavy but consistent and lasting for 3 or 4 days before it clears up for a couple of days when another storm moves in. And the bonus is that it is dumping deep, wet snow in the Sierra from Shasta/Lassen down to Mammoth and further south. I-80 is closed across the summit in both directions due to the number of spin-outs. Although it’s hard to predict whether this pattern will hold for the rest of the winter, at least it’s encouraging.

24
calochortus  Dec 31, 2022 • 7:06:44pm

Rain is starting to slack off here. We’ve gotten 5.4” in the last 30 hours. Tomorrow should be sunny, and then it will be back to rain for most of the coming week, and perhaps beyond.

We’re hosting a wedding reception dinner/dance tonight. Lots of leftovers from the catering our restaurant did - beef tips, chicken parmesan, garlic mash & mixed zucchini and other veggies. Made a big to-go box but rather than take it home, I’m going to pop it into the employee fridge for tomorrow evening. Should be a marvelous dinner then ;)

I looked that up. 14,000 feet you can drive up to. Long ways up… Cars must run like crap that high. I’ve driven up to 11,000 and I was moving pretty slow what with the camera gear. 14,000? Must be about as high as you can just drive up to anywhere in the US.

On injury: when it rains every major accident from last 60 years pops up: left hand basketball injury at 26, shoulder and ankle running mishap at 37,
Softball injury at 46 and auto accidents at 55 and 59 all conspire to hurt all at once. Hydrate and keep flexible

On rain: it just started coming down pretty hard and steady here. My courtyard drain is clear but flooded

People out here in the boonies blowing up big loud things, and Lucy is hollering back at every blast that she’ll rip their guts out.

We had a few shots go off earlier, but not much. Thankfully, outdoor kitten is a veteran of several years, so I’ve no doubt she’s hunkered down in a snow bunker somewhere, waiting it out until sunrise.

It wasn’t that bad for awhile and then 2016 happened and since then I want time to come to a screeching halt. 2022 didn’t help any. I want to be optimistic, but reality gets in the way. like any blog community…. some come and go, some embarass themselves and skulk away and return with a new name hoping to be better or be different. Heck, I’ve stepped on toes myself, been educated, taken my lumps when outta line and I’ve seen others do the same.

The idea is to trust until that trust is broken, good faith mistakes, bad days and misunderstandings happen, only so much that words, emoji’s can do, you can STILL screw up w/o understanding context and background and experiences of other posters, but in a way, that’s why we’re here. stretching our boundaries, trying to get along and help each other on our journey… communities like this tend to be rare imho, built on accepting our mistakes and building from there.

So with this latest batch of Kona beans I’ve been getting into cold brew. This is a dark roast and it tastes pretty good but a high-quality medium is probably the best for cold brew. I just about have the ratios right. The first batch was 4 cups water to 1 cup of coarse French Press grind. Boy was I flying all day. I’m good with two cups and about a 1/3rd cup of grind. A few granules of sugar if any of all.

I didn’t think this was my finest effort by a long shot (used the site AI to try and modify/improve a prior mediocre low-res work of mine I uploaded; hate what the upscaling did to the sails). But with less than two minutes left and the clock ticking, I decided “eh, f*ck it”, and submitted it anyway to the site’s daily challenge for Friday.

I just found out it made 14th place out of 5,475 submissions (and places 9-14 tied with the same score), so what the hell do I know… xD

I can be the judge of that. I’m not speaking for Michelle, but the disabled community is, in my experience, fiercely proud to a fault. We’ve had years of people either putting us on pedestals, or lecturing us on being disabled in the “wrong” way.

Not to worry. I’ve been online and I can sniff out trolls as easily as anyone.
We put up with DF, and Gus himself, for a long time. They can’t hurt me.

BigPapa I love pure Kona. Been getting it from San Francisco Bay Coffee Co. I try to stock up on it along with Jamaican Blue Mountain and Puerto Rico Peaberry.

That’s like asking a newbie who “Gordon” is. I doubt half the people here would know without Googling.

Hell, I lurked off and on from 2002-2009 before reading every day from 2009 onward, only registering and delurking in 2019 and I don’t remember who Gordon is/was.

Iron Fist, Walter, Killgore, Albusteve, Buck, Mandy, SFZ, Dark Falcon, sure. Gordon, no, doesn’t ring a bell.

Not that it means anything, I do have a memory of someone using the handle “Delilah” about a decade back but can’t remember the tenor of the posts. Unless I’m having a false memory, she wasn’t on my radar the way Steve, Mandy, and Buck were as people to keep a watchful eye on.

Nebraska’s top five political stories in a tumultuous 2022 (Nebraska Examiner)

TL;DR:

1) US Representative Jeff Fortenberry convicted of taking foreign campaign money in a literal brown paper bag.

2) Special Election confusion for Fortenberry’s seat (NE-1) due to redistricting. Fortenberry won by 20 points, his replacement won by 7 points.

3) Most expensive gubernatorial primary in state history, which included nine candidates and allegations of sexual assault from eight women (including a sitting Republican state senator) during the primary. The alleged assaulter won the primary (a conservative value) and will be our next governor.

4) Fascists took over the state GOP and ousted the Ricketts machine Republicans.

5) US Senator Ben Sasse resigns his Senate seat to become president of the University of Florida. The incoming accused sexual assaulting governor will appoint Gov. Ricketts to fill out his remaining term. Nebraska will have two Senate seats up for election in 2024.

A belated Happy New Year from the swamps of Fairfax County, Virginia. The fireworks seemed pathetic this year. Just a few weak booms apparently done out of habit and duty.

Nothing like the massive barrages of incoming I heard over the phone whilst talking to my brother in the Tampa Bay, Florida area.

Fortunately, I only heard the fire department once. Probably heading to pick up some unfortunate soul who managed to involve themselves in a car accident. I am fine with the unusual lack of sirens.

And finally, some kind wishes for the coming year. Better written by Neil Gaiman. But describing my sentiments as well.

During an appearance on the Lions & Generals show this Monday, Michele Bachman talked about how she spent Christmas warning her grandchildren that if they don’t follow the teachings of Christ, they will most certainly burn in hell.

“I was with two of my grandchildren this weekend, a two-year-old and a six-year-old, and I was just compelled to talk to them about, when we die, it’s judgement,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann said that she told the children that at the moment of death, “a decision is made — you’re either going to heaven or you’re going to hell.”

“We talked about what heaven is, and we talked about what hell is,” she said. “That hell is just as real as heaven. And in hell, there’s eternal fires and damnation and it’s a real place, we do not want to go there, that’s where the wicked will go. And then I explained how they don’t go — that they receive Christ and confess their sins … [Jesus] cleanses them and then because of his righteousness, they go to heaven.”

Also, there is a new peer-reviewed psychology study out. There have been many studies about religious people’s attitudes toward atheists, but the authors could find no comparable study of atheists toward religious people in the USA.

Their new study shows that people of all religions studied concerning hatred of out-groups (Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, other religious groups too small to be significant in the study) were significantly greater than atheists toward any religious group. All religious groups show a marked increase in their desire to discriminate against atheists and exclude them from society. Notably, the religious groups did not show increased animosity toward each other.

In Christian denominations it did not matter whether the denomination was nominally “liberal” or “conservative.”

This adds to the study ten years ago where atheists were the least-trusted group in America, less trusted than paedophiles.

Croatia rings in New Year as fully integrated EU member, joining Eurozone, Schengen Area (CTV News, January 1, 2023)

ZAGREB, Croatia -

At the stroke of midnight on Saturday, Croatia switched to the shared European currency, the euro, and removed dozens of border checkpoints to join the world’s largest passport-free travel area.

It marked a fresh start for the small Balkan nation of 4 million people that captured international attention three decades ago as the site of a brutal war that left nearly a quarter of its economy in ruins.

Joining Europe’s ID-check-free Schengen zone means Croats will now be among almost 420 million people who are free to roam its 27 member countries without passports for work or leisure.

Adopting the euro will likewise offer Croatia the benefits stemming from deeper financial ties with the currency’s 19 other users and with the European Central Bank. It will also make traveling and doing business easier, removing the hassle of currency exchange for Croats going abroad and for tens of thousands of tourists who visit their country each year for work or to enjoy its stunning Adriatic coastline.

As revelers around Croatia took to the streets to ring in the New Year, the country’s interior minister, Davor Bozinovic, was at the Bregana border crossing with Slovenia to wish the best of luck to the last travellers to have their passports checked there.

Did ok in Thursday’s no-theme challenge at NightCafe:

But only ok, top 20%. I continue to try and get something that I can call “art” out of these AI image programs. I do not think just any image, especially one created by a mindless machine, qualifies as “art”, in the narrow sense of that word.

However, it has become common to call any picture by the word “art”. Those house-flipper shows use “art” in this manner all the time. Anything they put on the wall is called “art”.

In the general sense, “art” simply means something made by humans. There is an art to blogging, an art to writing software, an art in cooking pancakes.

But the narrow sense of “art” is more meaningful to me, and the AI-tool pushers want to sell their machine out as “art” in the narrow sense when at best it can be called “art” in only the general sense.

Yet even that is doubtful in my mind, because the AI tools are not human and for someone to label the output of such as “art” and try to sell it as such is misguided at best, deceitful at worst.

2022 started off very dry.

The current rain year (starts 1 Oct) is off to a good start but that has happen a few times in recent decade. Oct-Dec being wet, the rest of the year being very dry.

But as I’ve pointed out before, different instantions of Stable Diffusion give different results.

Here is the output from two different instantiations, but I’ve set all the parameters (that are available to me) the same, yet the pictures, while similar, are hardly identical:

Been thinking about a fantasy-scifi-futurism story set in about 3900 years, when modernity has collapsed and in North America the dominant religion has melded Buddhism (from a giant influx of Asian immigrants over a millennium) with high-church Christianity.

Sort of like A Canticle for Leibowitz, but more distant and not so centered on an nuclear apocalypse.

The new temples/cathedrals play a central role in holding together civilization, but unlike Miller’s novel the religion is not so much ascetic but more into bling:

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 1, 2023 • 4:50:43am

re: #258 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Unlike Leibowitz, I’d rather a story not get stuck on a cyclical view of history.

Leibowitz was written at a time when it was hard for Americans to think of post-Christianity.

I’d rather imagine a future where syncretism has worked to significantly alter the dominant religious ideas.

That takes a long time, so setting it around 5900CE should give enough of that time for cultural evolution to work.

Once the current American Theology dies off, and with it everything from Manifest Destiny to the gun culture.

Even what is now Texas will give up the gun-god once 70 or 80 million people live there.

Instead, survival by social cooperation will dominate, though caste systems will arise. We humans will still be creatures who want hierarchy in our groups.

Yet disease will be rampant without modern medicine.

Throw in some genetic editing of humans (from say 2050-2500CE) bringing about some interesting variations in Homo sapiens (contra the radioactive mutations of Leibowitz), North America could be a very interesting place in 5900CE (for those who have survived.)

We finished off 2022 in Western NC with another .40 of an inch to end the year with 62.75 inches. This is more than 25 percent above normal for the fourth straight year.

We’ve lived in our house since 2012 and “normal” summers would mean I could go 2 weeks without having to mow the front yard due to lack of rain. But it’s like we’ve entered into a more tropical climate, where multiple thunderstorms a day in the summer have become common. Just been weird having a lush, green yard in August these past 4 years.

Grandpa Bacon was blacklisted for being a member of the Socialist Party so he opened his grocery store instead and gladly gave credit to millworkers to compete against the corporate company store. One of the incentives he used was roasting his own coffee blends. Grandpa would chuckle when mill supervisors would come to the back door to buy his freshly roasted coffee. Grandpa kept the grocery business going until the Wagner Act was passed and with the help of the CIO he was one of the field marshalls organizing the Steelworkers Union.

No Malarkey!  Jan 1, 2023 • 8:08:12am

re: #302 Dave In Austin

The bottom like to all and any religion in my small pea brain.

Everyone is scared of the dark. Since the beginning of rational thought. Homo Saipan’s are fear based creatures and are afraid of the dark.
“Who will lead us from this darkness!!??”.

The lament since they could kindle fire.

That’s my opinion and I’m sticking with it.

IMHO, which is probably wrong, hunter gatherers told stories about their hunting and other exploits around the campfire, which got embellished over time as people venerated their ancestors and prayed to them for success in the hunt and other matters. The ancestors evolved over time into Gods as religious and political elites found it useful to formalize religious practices, but it all started with some guy bragging that you should’ve seen the size of the Cave Bear he killed.

Well the cannon fire woke us at midnight. We got up and watched from the back porch. It was pretty. Pretty damned loud. This morning, we had a murder of crows screaming up a storm outside the house.

She Who Must Be Obeyed got a picture of the source of the ruckus:

I believe this bird is a harbinger of the New Year, an Omen Pigeon, if you will.

There were no fireworks nor any gunfire hereabouts last night, I stayed up ‘til nearly 2am binge watching 2d season of Umbrella Academy. Mrs J bit the dust not long after supper:

Chili Cheese Fries

I have a pot of pinto beans simmering down with pork neck bones this morning, getting ready to make a skillet of corn bread to go with. It’s 53 degrees here mid-morning. We will view the week’s captures on several trail cams later. It takes an hour or two to go through the lot. Had to replace a dead camera, it’s CMOS battery had been dead for a while so we had to reset the date and time with every battery change. It will be nice not to have to do that for a while.

Experiment to see if a “let her rip” Covid policy would’ve kept the economy humming in 2020 surprisingly demonstrates that no, everyone getting sick at once isn’t conducive to economic growth.

It can be a disaster in the short run — but let’s see where they are in 3 months. Of course, we don’t know what the outcome on variants will be — whether some arise that are far more dangerous. In this case, the Chinese are succumbing to omicron; back in 2020 it was either the original strain or alpha, and the results could have been very different.
