Details and colors are quite different but this somehow reminds me of our hillside home in Iruma Japan in the late 50s. Same atmosphere, people with umbrellas, lush vegetation. Even the car entering a tunnel-like forest road just left of the yellow building has a counterpart in my memory. The dirt road ran for another 3 or 4 houses then seemed to disappear into the woods to our left (facing forward). I knew there was a factory that made rubber balloons at the other end, but I never went there except with my dad. It is amazing how vivid these memories are sometimes.

TweetDeck is the only way that Twitter is even tolerable at this point. The main site and the mobile app are complete garbage. I’ve noticed that the power users I follow, who have tweeted hundreds of thousands of times over a decade or more, are saying that the main site is just an unworkable piece of shit and that neonazis are routinely injected into the TL.

The fact that TweetDeck is still around today is rather astonishing considering the fascist tendencies of Twitter’s owner. TweetDeck has no ads, is a chronological TL, and you can have live updates of users and hashtags.

There’s a new version being beta tested that’s absolutely horrible. Like the web interface in every column. Slower than shit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Musk suddenly find out about it and just rush it out even though it’s very, very bad.

Cool. I was taken to Nagano a couple of times to climb mountains in August, but never for skiing. The place where I hit powder (which was not good for me as an unskilled skier) was Shizukuishi a bit farther north.

A Children’s Biography About Michelle Obama Among The Books Texas Parents Want To Ban (Essence, February 3, 2022)

All conservatives lie. The book does no such thing.

An NBC investigation uncovered “an unprecedented effort by parents and conservative politicians in Texas to ban books dealing with race, sexuality and gender from schools…Hundreds of titles have been pulled from libraries across the state for review, sometimes over the objections of school librarians…fac[ing] increasingly hostile work environments and mounting pressure to preemptively pull books that might draw complaints.”

Among them is a children’s biography of Michelle Obama. A parent accused the book of making it seem that “if you sound like a white girl you should be ashamed of yourself.”

Sad news.

Lisa Loring, Original Wednesday Addams, Dies at 64

Loring’s passing was reported by her close friend Laurie Jacobson on Facebook Sunday. Jacobson reported, “It is with great sadness that I report the death of our friend, Lisa Loring. 4 Days ago she suffered a massive stroke brought on by smoking and high blood pressure. She had been on life support for 3 days. Yesterday, her family made the difficult decision to remove it and she passed last night. She is embedded in the tapestry that is pop culture and in our hearts always as Wednesday Addams.”

But the main indicator of inflation, the consumer price index, is compiled by looking at the changes in price specifically urban Americans pay for a set basket of goods. Those living in rural America are not surveyed.

As economists who study rural America, we believe this poses a problem: People living outside America’s cities represent 14% of the U.S. population, or around 46 million people. They are likely to face different financial pressures and have different consumption habits than urbanites.

The fact that the Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys only urban populations for the consumer price index makes assessing rural inflation much more difficult - it may even be masking a rural-urban inflation gap.

starherald.com

In 2020, about 82% of rural wages went toward expenses, said Peters. Now expenses “consume 91% of rural take-home pay.”

“Because rural households have lower incomes, household expenditures make up a greater share of the income, leaving less discretionary dollars,” Rempe said.

Discretionary income in rural Nebraska has decreased by nearly half but only 13% in urban areas. Coupled with the rising costs of goods and services, the narrower spending margins are causing many people to think twice before making a purchase. Moreover, they do not have extra money to cover emergency expenses or unexpected bills.

Word of advice if you’re wanting to commit credit card fraud at a hotel: Responding to your stolen credit card # being rejected by our system by mumbling that you’ll “call your boss” and then disappearing from the property altogether is a pretty clear sign to us that you’re scared shitless we just hit the silent alarm button and you wanna be gone before the cops show up. At least try to BS us by calling up your dealer on the phone in the lobby and make some “employee” noises before you give us your excuse and bolt.

The whole issue with credit card fraud here has been a long and difficult one. When we first shifted over to our current ownership, credit card authorizations were still done through the honor system of sending a Word doc to the card holder and then comparing what they sent back to what we had in the system. That system fell apart that same winter when we started getting credit card chargebacks totaling tens of thousands of dollars monthly because the same gang of dopeheads were calling down to the desk every other day to let us know “grandma” was paying for another week.

So for a time we didn’t accept any authorizations at all, which was such a joy listening to meth junkies whine at 1am that they “have nowhere else to go!” and expecting me to just look the other way because they’ll call their “dad” and he’ll tell me the card’s totally legit. But the few real corporate clients that wanted to dump their contractors on our doorstep bitched loud enough that home office ordered us to change policy to the current one that we only accept legit corporate cards. Which led to a spat of drug addicts showing up to tell us that their “sister” had sent over a card, getting told that we only accepted corporate cards, then showing back up an hour later with an authorization from their “boss” with the same exact card info.

That shit came to a stop when I spent one weekend going through several authorization forms of incoming guests and caught that they were basically duplicates of each other with “corporate” addresses that were home addresses or PO box numbers with a “boss” who was an 80 year old retiree living on the other side of the state from the address. After I clued in my coworkers to start actually Googling addresses and names, we started seeing what we get now with the more extensive credit card authorization system: People showing up to check in, getting told that their cards aren’t going through, their whining to us about how the card’s good and their “boss” is having “issues” with the new system, and then proceeding to disappear completely to “get it fixed.”

tl;dr: Drug users are a fearful and superstitious lot who are apt to run the moment they realize they’re caught.

Oy. On a Sunday night????

Ayep. These two have been an absolute pain for weeks now. 2-3 weeks ago it was yelling in the room with her telling me to have him tossed out of the hotel and his refusing to go because her mom had given him permission to be there. The next week I came back after my days off to hear he’d been hauled off to jail after fighting with about five cops and being hauled off like a piece of luggage. Now they’re standing outside in the rain and having another loud argument that I’ve already received complaints about.

Figuring I’m gonna have to recommend to the GM having her and her mom kicked to the curb tomorrow because they’ve already received several noise complaints and yet her little ass can’t stop screaming anytime she’s within earshot of her beau.

Hope this didn’t involve teleski’s boss:

Nagano - Police said Monday they found two men who had been missing on a 2,100-meter-high mountain in Nagano Prefecture after they were caught in an avalanche while backcountry skiing the previous day.

The men were found in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, according to police.

The two skiers were among a total of 13 people in three groups, all foreign nationals, who were outside of patrolled areas near the Tsugaike Mountain Resort in the village of Otari when the avalanche occurred Sunday, police said. The two men were believed left unconscious, while the 11 others descended the mountain safely.

In total, five people were caught up in the avalanche, with three able to escape earlier. One of the skiers who was initially reported by local rescuers as having broken an arm, actually suffered a dislocated right shoulder, police said.

According to police, the five people consisted of a group of two Australians and a person whose nationality is unknown and a group of two Americans. The nationality of the two men who were rescued was not immediately clear.

Authorities were unable to immediately begin their search on Sunday due to weather conditions and other factors. The avalanche occurred at around 2:30 p.m. in the backcountry terrain.

An avalanche advisory had been issued for the northern Nagano region, including the village.

The Meteorological Agency said the region had received heavy snowfall over the past few days and had warned of a risk of “surface avalanches” due to an unstable snowpack.

Peelian principles existed alongside militarized colonialist policing, and I’d argue that the latter explains more about modern cops than the former.

Before helping set up the Met and formulating at least the beginnings of the peelian principles Peel had been involved in the creation of the Royal Irish Constabulary, the ancestor of all British colonial police forces.

Maybe his experience with that informed the explicitly civilian nature of the Met (or maybe he was a racist who thought true Englishmen needed something different than mere colonials).

Boris Johnson says Putin threatened him with missile strike (BBC, yesterday)

Boris Johnson has said Vladimir Putin threatened him with a missile strike in an “extraordinary” phone call in the run-up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The then-prime minister said Mr Putin told him it “would only take a minute”.

Mr Johnson said the comment was made after he warned the war would be an “utter catastrophe” during a “very long” call in February 2022.

Details of the exchange are revealed in a BBC documentary, examining Mr Putin’s interactions with world leaders.

Mr Johnson warned Mr Putin that invading Ukraine would lead to Western sanctions and more Nato troops on Russia’s borders.

He also tried to deter Russian military action by telling Mr Putin that Ukraine would not join Nato “for the foreseeable future”.

The guy is deflecting every time someone brings up an Old Testament admonition to care for the poor, but there is also the New Testament words in the Gospels, such as:

Mark 10:21—21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. (KJV)

When Anne Marie Squeo received her fiery red Tesla sports utility vehicle in 2020, the 55-year-old marketing and communications professional felt like she had joined a special “club” of people who were doing something to help the environment, while still driving with style.

But last year, as Tesla boss Elon Musk shared right-wing conspiracy theories on Twitter, posted a picture of guns by his bedside, and proposed terms to resolve the war in Ukraine that were adamantly rejected by many of the country’s top leaders, Anne Marie’s satisfaction gave way to shame.

“It’s been very depressing, and sometimes embarrassing to be driving this car around,” says Anne Marie, a former journalist who lives in Connecticut and wrote an article about her discomfort. “I wondered if people were making a judgement about me that I wasn’t looking for.”

Good luck finding this.

Mining giant Rio Tinto says it is working with authorities to try to find a radioactive capsule that went missing in Western Australia this month.

“We recognise this is clearly very concerning and are sorry for the alarm it has caused,” the firm told the BBC.

The casing contains a small quantity of radioactive Caesium-137, which could cause serious illness if touched.

It was lost between the town of Newman and the city of Perth, a distance of roughly 1,400km (870 miles).

“As well as fully supporting the relevant authorities, we have launched our own investigation to understand how the capsule was lost in transit,” Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore chief executive Simon Trott said in a statement.

Rick Blaine, of Casablanca, is a Neutral Good Paladin as D&D puts it. Law? Chaos? Who cares? Good? That’s all that really matters.

I think Rick is a much more complex character than a simple 3x3 grid is going to describe. Even with tendencies defined in the blocks of the grid.

For example, how does it really describe how a particular song (and woman) triggers him to act very uncharacteristically as compared to his current circumstances?

Nebraska state law requires to be an incorporated city (village), the town must have at least one hundred people.

The 2020 Census has our town’s population dropping from 128 to 95 now. Officially, we cannot be legally a village now.

However, state law does provide an exception, in that if the town can fulfil all the requirements that the state puts on it, then the town may remain incorporated (which is why our state has an incorporated village with a population of 1).

I presume this will come up soon at a village board meeting, when the state is done processing all the new population data. We currently fulfil all the requirements of a village, so hopefully this shouldn’t be too hard to keep our incorporated status (and the millions of dollars in our village bank accounts).

Because of this, in our area (despite it being very rural) we have Cambodian, Vietnamese, Greek, Thai, Japanese, Indian, and Chinese restaurants, along with ethnic food shops. (We also have two English fish-and-chip joints but I don’t know if that counts as “ethnic food.”)

Over on the east side of the state, there are numerous Polish and Czech businesses.

Nebraska has the largest “Polish colony” (descendents of immigrants) of any state.

The Polish Heritage Center was incorporated in 1997 in an effort to preserve the ancestral language, culture and traditions of one of the most significant immigrant groups to settle in Nebraska. The small village of Ashton, where the Center is located was part of a unique planned community for early Polish immigrants. The Polish Roman Catholic Union of America established Polish Colonies throughout the United States. Central Nebraska was one of their successful efforts. Since the late 1800’s, communities such as Farwell, Ashton, Paplin and Loup City have been the epicenter from which their descendantshave spread out across the nation.>

In today’s edition of “all conservatives lie” comes an article from Wonkette.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed a couple of terrible bills on Saturday. The first will create a massive school voucher system, and the second is so truly crappy that no one is even talking about that.

Because the second bill Cox signed will outlaw life-saving gender-affirming care for trans youths.

While signing the bill, Governor Cox noted that it was a “terribly divisive issue” while adding that “experts, states and countries around the world are pausing these permanent and life-altering treatments.” The latter, of course, is explicitly untrue on a number of levels. Every possible relevant medical association has issued statements supporting gender-affirming care as the standard of care for trans youths — so no, “experts” are not pausing these treatments.

(more, followed by links to more than thirty relevant professional organisations that Gov. Cox lied about, but Lying for Jesus is required of conservatives).

When people talk about how Russian and Slavic-language names seem so long, one needs to keep in mind that all the -ovskis and -evskis, -inskis and -itskis at the end of a name are just adjectival or possesive endings, as “of/from so-and-so/such-and-such”

Hence:
Ivanovsky, from Ivan, is Jones or Johnson
Vysotskii from vysotá, hills or heights
Kuybischevski = from kúibische, a smithy
Vishnyevski = from vishnhyá, a cherry

Remember that western TV series, Alias Kuybischevski and Ivanovsky?

I have no problem with churches maintaining a strong anti-homosexuality stance. (“No problem” in the sense that it is their right to be anti-gay, not that I agree with such a stance.) The problem I have is when they advocate for the government to make it illegal to be gay, because as much as I love my religion, I do not want it to be the law of the land, it SHOULD NOT be the law of the land, and nobody else’s religion should be the law of the land either - most especially not the Christofascists’ White American Jesus religion.

This weekend, my church preached a sermon against the practices and beliefs of the New Age spiritualist movement. This is part of an existing sermon series contrasting other religions to Christianity, so it’s only a surprise in that “New Age spirituality’ is not an organized religion, and encompasses a wide array of beliefs. What was interesting about it was how carefully they approached the subject, because according to a Pew Research poll from 2018, 62% of Americans believe at least some New Age spiritualist palaver… including 61% of self-identified Christians. As opposed to sermons decrying the evils of homosexuality, or railing against “woke culture,” they were very explicit that we’re not supposed to be condemning of people who believe such things, simply “show them the truth in love.” Sure, but where is that philosophy when it comes to the “harder” sins? In my mind, all sinners should be treated equally - with love and respect, as people, since literally everybody is a sinner.

Sounds a bit like your church is more concerned with the potential competition for hearts and souls (and donations)

Good to hear that. So what’s the issue with New Age? I see it as little more than an amorphous fad that really caught on at the turn of the 80’s and has been drifting in and out of fashion ever since.

They conflated parts of it with belief systems that are more properly independent religions in their own right (Wiccans, Satanists, etc.), which grated on me a little bit. But for the parts of it that were properly addressing New Age philosophy, it’s mostly that New Age is mostly centered on the self and on God being everywhere and in everything. They went in pretty hard on the “there is one God and one way to God” aspect in the sermon.

And it is used by Gwyneth Paltrow to sell scented egg inserts…because God is everywhere, even up in there…

So there is only one Path to God, namely through Jesus, a path that was revealed to only a small portion of humanity starting 2,000 years ago and was not spread throughout the rest of the World until about 100 years ago?

I’s stick with the candles and woo-woo. that’s universal.

re: #159 Dopamine Fish

The New Age movement is competition. You can’t have that.

And not everybody is a sinner: Only people who believe in such a concept as sin can be sinners. I do not believe in the idea of crimes against a god. Literally everyone is NOT a sinner.

Arguing there is such a thing as sin (and it isn’t any god who argues it, it is always a human who argues it) compels religious people to write their sins into law as crimes.

I can accept that none of us is perfect and that our personal morality (and our legislation) needs to take that into account.

The Calvinist Protestant view is that if we are not praying, working or resting after a hard day’s work, we are gettin’ ready to go out and sin because deep inside we are all a bunch of drinkin’, fightin’, thievein’ whorin’, lyin’, gamblin’ hell-raisers who can only be kept in check by a constricting moral corset.

The more I learn about Christian denominations, the more grateful I am to have been born Jewish.

For the record, our God does not forbid drinking and gambling, we’re selective about when or if it’s okay to do fighting or whoring, thieving is forbidden and lying is a problem, but neither is a sin against God. It’s a sin against whoever you stole from or lied to or lied about. Hell-raising is a “huh? what?”, because we don’t believe in Hell.

(in fact, drinking is often required. And gambling is a children’s game to teach financial management, it’s done with chocolate coins. If you eat too many, you could get thrown out of the game when luck turns against you. But if you don’t eat any, then you’ve missed the whole point of why you wanted to be in the game to begin with.)

Yeah, this is not quite like the radioactive incident in Goiânia, Brazil in 1987, where a radiotherapy source was stolen from an abandoned hospital site. Four people, including a child, died, a good chunk of the city was examined for radioactivity. The problem became known when a woman (who later died of radiation poisoning) noticed people around her were getting sick, went and got all the radioactive stuff and transported it (and herself) to a hospital.

Levi is the guy who co-authored a paper in Nature back in April, that claimed to show increased cardiac emergencies in young people correlated with COVID vaccination. That study (actually just a regression analysis using data from Israeli EMS) is under a lot of fire right now because its correlations haven’t shown up in any other vaccine study before or since.

Levi and the lead author, one Christopher Sun, are both MIT Operations Management professors, who specialize in food-safety supply chain logistics and healthcare management logistics. Their area of expertise maps better to optimizing vaccine rollouts than to gauging vaccine efficacy.

When the paper was published, Levi was still trying to keep a veneer of professional respectability and being careful in interviews to admit that correlation doesn’t imply causation. But since then, he seems to have turned defending his paper into a huge shoulder chip, and has partnered with the Epoch Times to spread antivax paranoia.

I had what looks like a capital loss from sale of an employee stock option. I can’t finalize my tax returns until that 1099 comes in, which should be in two weeks. Everything else, I have the finalized documents already, and I will be receiving a slim refund from the USA and from MN, and a bigger refund in the form of a property tax refund from the state in the middle of the year. (Minnesota refunds partial property taxes if your Minnesota home is your primary residence, or “homestead”; however, property tax statements don’t come out until after the income tax filing deadline, so the filing for those refunds is off-cycle.)

It does less damage to biological tissue than the equivalent dose of alpha or beta radiation; but alpha radiation is so heavy that it can be stopped very easily, and beta radiation can be dealt with using relatively lightweight construction. Stopping gamma rays from blasting everything in the room requires a metric shit ton of lead or concrete.

Nothing as nasty as a fresh 60Cobalt source. Best TL;DR I found on that one is “Chernobyl in a Tube”. Basically, 5 minutes at one yard off, you have a 50/50 chance of survival…

Cs-137 has a half-life 6 times greater than Co-60, it’s only 1/2 the energy output (~0.6 MeV vs ~1.2 MeV) but, half-life… is readily dispensable in air, and it’s water soluble. There is a reason the there is shift to using Co-60 over Cs-137. It is less dangerous.

Rare is unit of measure when defined. Just because massie doesn’t know what it means in public heath terns doesn’t mean it is undefined. /100k (reactions, often) or /10^6 (normal cancer) depending on the health concern.

Some outdated radioactive medical equipment was ‘donated’ to Mexico in the 70s. iirc. From the US.

I remember the story and had some personal involvement with it. None other than Methodist Hospital (now Covenant Medical Center) in Lubbock sold a radio-cobalt machine to a clinic in Mexico. The clinic went broke and the cobalt source ended up in a junkyard. From there it found its way into a batch of steel that was made into structural girders. All this came to light only because a truckload of these girders was sold to a contractor in Albuquerque. The driver delivering them got lost and pulled into the first likely place he could see to ask directions. It turned out to be the main gate at the Sandia National laboratory. Their numerous radiation detectors went crazy and the alarm reached all the way to the White House. It took several years and quite a few millions of dollars to track down the contaminated steel. The truck was parked behind an earthen berm in an isolated area of the lab property. It is still there and still hot.

LGBTQ people face being ‘erased’ in Michigan schools thanks to right-wing group’s legal loophole

A right-wing group thinks it has hit upon a legal loophole that it can use to force Michigan public schools to “erase” any sign of openly LGBTQ people from classrooms, reported Judd Legum for his Popular Information blog on Monday.

“The effort, organized by the Great Schools Initiative (GSI), seeks to exploit a Michigan statute that allows parents to opt their children out of sex education,” reported Legum. “Michigan law allows schools to offer courses in sex education. The nature of this instruction is quite traditional” — stressing the benefits of abstinence alongside the other course information — “Nevertheless, the law also allows students or parents to request to be excused from sex education classes. Schools must grant any such request ‘without penalty or loss of academic credit.’”

GSI, however, wants to take the language of this law and use it to allow parents to “opt out” students not just from courses on sex education, but on any incidental appearance of LGBTQ identity anywhere in the school — even something as simple as a teacher wearing a Pride pin.

I’m convinced Republicans did so poorly in the last midterms in part because so many of them died of covid. And the trend continues and may even be accelerating going into 2024.

This gives me no comfort. It’s a sign of dying society.

I disagree. It’s a sign of parts of society are dying because they’re stupid, gullible, conspiratorial or bits of one, two, or all three. I see this as a self-cleansing evolutionary event.

Republicans (right wingers globally) are killing each other. Purposely. It’s politically assisted suicide. It’s the culmination of decades of lies, deceit and stupidity. And with each death our collective IQ increases. We’re watching evolution in real time.

What is a sign of a dying society is they’re allowed to continue. And for that, I don’t know the cure (a workable cure).

Senior Republican devils like Cheeto, DeSantis and Massie don’t seem concerned at all that their propaganda is killing off their own supporters in wholesale lots. They also show no concern about alienating whole voting blocs like the young, independent women and (increasingly) the non-senile elderly. I think this is because they, and their backers, do not see votes and the democratic process as the real road to power. Instead they will rely on voter suppression, gerrymandering and (inevitably) on the threat of violence and authoritarian law enforcement.

This whole thread on policing. Of note: if a police chief or politician says that they’re going to sit down with the community and work on solutions, it’s all more likely that they weren’t listening before, and weren’t implementing the plans they previously put in place. Also, cops with seniority tend to get plum assignments, and lower ranking (younger) cops are on duty when they need more supervision and this leads to problems as younger cops are more likely to end up in these situations than older cops (not always - as some older cops impart the wrong lessons on peers).

EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards is 9 ppm CO in air, resulting in the inhalation of 52 mg CO in 8 hours. The OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit is 50 ppm in air, resulting in the inhalation of 290 mg CO in 8 hours.

How the anti-abortion movement learned to stop worrying and love punishing women for having sex

Anti-abortionists have always had a weak spot. It was enveiled as long as Roe was in place. Now that Roe is gone, that vulnerability is coming into view. It’s pretty much what you’d expect it to be. Yes, I’m talking about sex.

Anti-abortionism is, at its root, about making the beast with two backs. It’s not that sex is bad. If you’re a man, it might be bad, or good. It depends on your age, your rank in society, your money and influence, and so on. It is not about morality, since, as a man, morality is mostly what you say it is.

It’s not that sex is bad for women. That depends, too. If it’s inside iron gripped and aggressively enforced social boundaries, it’s probably good, “morally” speaking. But it’s probably bad, sexually speaking, on account of it being inside iron gripped and aggressively enforced social boundaries.

What’s certain is that anti-abortionism is, at its root, not about “the sanctity of life,” “fetal personhood” or some made-up thing. It is what conservative protestant white men have always said it was: a means of controlling women, a quasi-legal set of bylaws that punish disobedience of conservative protestant white men but reward submission to them.

The white women who support the GOP are just as racist as the white men. Racism is more important to them than bodily autonomy.

Right, all within a meaningless statistical error of people being told to panic. And to suggest that maybe this is a panic and not reality. The people seeking medical attention. That would mean that those ovens are cranking out 1000s ppm / hour to cause symptoms in a human. The LD50 for a 30-min exposure to CO in a rat is around 1200 ppm. 280g ready vs. 60kg person. What’s certain is that anti-abortionism is, at its root, not about “the sanctity of life,” “fetal personhood” or some made-up thing. It is what conservative protestant white men have always said it was: a means of controlling women, a quasi-legal set of bylaws that punish disobedience of conservative protestant white men but reward submission to them.

when you get to the root of these “Fundamentalist”, “traditional” or “family” values, it means that women are the property of their fathers (or male head of the family) until they marry, at which point they become property of their husbands.

Canada should issue an arrest warrant for Tucker Carlson. The USA wouldn’t honour it, but other countries might.

[Embedded content]

Maybe Tucker could mobilize his thug anti-maskers together with the Meal Team Six militia, and the NRA partizan forces to invade Canada. The 1866 and 1870-71 Fenian Raids into Canada might be instructive.

The Fenian raids were a series of incursions carried out by the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish republican organization based in the United States, on military fortifications, customs posts and other targets in Canada (then part of British North America) in 1866, and again from 1870 to 1871. A number of separate incursions by the Fenian Brotherhood into Canada were undertaken to bring pressure on the British government to withdraw from Ireland, although none of these raids achieved their aims.

The raids led to a number of armed clashes but did nothing for the cause of Irish independence. They did, however, harden support for Confederation in Canada, a very big deal in Canadian history, essentially marking its emergence as an independent country.
The Fenian militia gangs generally performed poorly, even though many of them were hardened veterans of the Civil War while most Canadian troops were barely trained local militia. By the numbers, 35 Canadians were killed or died of wounds, 53 suffered non-lethal wounds and 54 were captured (though soon released). The Fenians lost 24 dead and 48 wounded. 59 Fenians were captured, not counting those rounded up and thrown in jail by US authorities, notably Buffalo New York sheriff (and future President) Grover Cleveland.

Consent to sex is not consent to pregnancy?
If I go to a casino and bet on roulette, but it doesn’t land on my number, I lose my chips. I can’t say “now that I’ve seen the outcome, I withdraw consent.” You don’t get to withdraw consent from effects of an action you consented to!

What is this person getting at?

If you are adult and properly educated on possible outcomes and possible measures you can undertake to influence those outcomes, then consent to sex is in fact consent to the potential outcome of pregnancy.

Remember when Queen Elizabeth was on a State Visit with Ford and during the state Dinner the Captain and Tenille sang “Muskrat Love” and the Queen winced.

I couldn’t blame her!

I have always despised Ford for his pardon of Nixon but, up until now, I never knew he’d invited the Captain and Tenille to a state dinner for the Queen. It says a lot for the Bit’s sense of forbearing to not immediately declare war but it drops Ford a couple of notches in my eye.
