re: #15 Backwoods_Sleuth

this kind of goes into my situation with an employer who has no intention, apparently, of ever giving me a raise. I spent 3 months busting my can, doing 700 tutoring sessions over 2 1/2 months (which works out to a shit-ton of hours) only to get a “yeah this is great! Now let’s work on some miscellaneous bit of bullshit that I noted in my evaluation” from my boss. So fuck it. I’ve been around long enough to know when I’m in some kind of production squeeze play. I’m just doing what I feel like doing now, with plenty of time between sessions. If I feel like logging off half an hour before my shift technically ends, then I’m doing it. I’m not exactly quiet quitting. They still get value out of me. But I’m getting a base-rate that is equivalent to me putting fruit cocktail in chick fil-a cups in the morning prep, so fuck them. You want more productivity? Pay me for it. Oh, it ties in because yes, loyalty to a company has no real upside.

okay now how about letting me know what my doctor’s office visit is going to cost.

When I take my dog to the vet, they won’t lay a finger on him until they have presented me with an itemized list of every test and procedure they propose to do. I have to approve it before any treatment takes place. I know exactly how much it will cost, and there are no surprise bills arriving in my mailbox several weeks down the road.

By contrast, I have had occasion to ask my (human) healthcare provider how much XYZ would cost, and they refused to tell me because they did not know.

Why is my dog’s healthcare easier to understand than my own?

1. I’m a Christian and I’ve worked tons of Sundays when necessary.

2. Nowhere does the Bible state the Sabbath is supposed to be observed on a Sunday or can only be observed on a Sunday.

That’s the thing, though. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act doesn’t say you have to be part of an organisation or follow a particular book to be following a religion.

eeoc.gov (Title VII)

Title VII is very long, but nowhere in the law does it say anything about having to conform to particular religious practices (such a law would violate the I Amendment).

Thus, claiming your religion requires Sunday off fits regardless of what the Bible says. It only says that the religious practice cannot unduly impact the business.

The Supreme Court case seeks to rule that the Post Office’s position that it unduly impacts its other workers does not impact the business.

I was just called by the college student who came by my house asking if I knew of anyone who could run against Sen. Deb Fischer (R) in the next election.

He said he found a very humble and very liberal but somewhat unsure rancher in Alliance who he thinks would make a good candidate. (He’s unsure whether he could mount a good campaign.)

He asked me if I would give the guy a call, since I managed to get elected here in Conservatopia. I told him “sure” so he’ll send me the man’s telephone number. (Apparently this guy only sends texts and hates talking on the telephone, and the rancher like me only has a landline.)

He also asked if I knew of any resources to mount campaigns (I suggested Run for Something). He also wasn’t aware that the Nebraska Democratic Party has a series on how to launch a campaign in Nebraska covering our laws and such. (I appreciate the youthful exuberance of this fellow but you do need to know things about how laws and party policies work.)

I remember one woman swing dancer that I knew at the time, who mentioned to me that she had deliberately gone to CFA just to own the liberals and that the food tasted particularly good because of it.

I almost said that I was a liberal, I liked CFA too, and I didn’t feel particularly owned.

However, the song started at that point and I decided to just meet my obligation to dance with her. I did not seek her out after that.

Fellow swing dancer here! Have you watched any videos of Nils and Bianca dancing? They are so playful and inventive and at times goofy. Definitely worth a gander.

I think that is really nice that you are willing to work with the college student to help the Democratic Party in Western Nebraska. Particularly since he is clearly still learning how to market and to relate to people in “meat space”.

Hopefully the student will learn and improve. Unfortunately, that often means that the person then moves on to “gibber and better” things. And then you lose them in Western Nebraska.

I always understood that Turkey vultures had reddish heads while Black vultures had blackish heads. At first glance, I did not see red in the video.

On the other hand, it looks like you may not even be in the (generally accepted) Black Vulture range. (Although their range is reportedly expanding.)

And, of course, you were there and I wasn’t.

Immature turkey vultures also have very black heads IIRC.

In Nebraska, Plan B is kept behind counters and you have to ask for it, allegedly to deter theft.

Many independent pharmacies don’t carry it, due to religious reasons. Pharmacies here advertise their Christian beliefs in their marketing.

I think the backlighting in the video kills the color in this shot, we have other videos that more clearly show a red tint. We are on the northern edge of the black vulture’s range so we may see those sometime.

Didn’t see it but I presume it was on the Great Salt Lake drying up. I’ve been reading about it for several months and it is rather startling to see before/after maps that show just how much its retracted. Several months ago, there were discussions in their legislature about what can be done. Somebody rather naively suggested running a pipe line from the Pacific ocean that could carry sea water to the lake to replenish it. It was rather quickly shot down when someone estimated how much that would cost and how long it would take.

They said that, at current rates, it will be gone in five years. Republicans in the state are actually trying to conserve it, and people have reduced their usage, but the water that flows in has been seriously diminished. They mentioned a former lake in California that had dried up and the winds were blowing the arsenic east. We spend about $2.5B per year to water it, in addition to putting rocks down and growing some plants. It’s, if I remember correctly, 1/12th the size of the Great Salt Lake.

Pumping in from the ocean would cause other problems because that’s a different kind of salt.

The vision for Salton City was clear: A bustling, resort community along the crystal blue waters of the Salton Sea. Residents could enjoy their own boat docks and stroll down palm tree-lined streets to the beach.

The city’s reality is more grim. Instead of a vacation spot, it feels like a post-apocalyptic ghost town. Most of the homes were demolished or never built. The palm trees are stumps. And the sea, while beautiful, is toxic.

“People here used to fish, swim, bring their boats,” said Frank Ruiz, Audubon’s Salton Sea Program Director, as he stood by a crumbling dock on land that once held water. “They went from living in paradise to living in hell.”

Ghost towns and toxic fumes: How an idyllic California lake became a disaster

It probably was idyllic, back in the day, given the lake was formed from water carried by the Colorado river when a levee was breached allowing the water to flow into a basin for months and months before it could be repaired. This was back in the 20s, I think. Since then, there have be no natural streams feeding it to dilute the salts until it became the toxic stew it is today.

On misty mornings driving west on the PA Turnpike From Philly to Pittsburgh there were two places I recall seeing them perched in numbers waiting for some air currents and sun.

1) At the first fuel plaza west of Philly (Peter J Camiel plaza) they’d be perched on the sign for the ramp to access the stop. Made one pause a bit and wonder about how wise stopping there might prove to be.

2) A farmer had a dead tree nearish the road somewhere around the Lancaster exit. There would be 10-15 vultures perched in at at times.

The story of the Salton Sea and its little communities gets trotted out from time to time. It’s interesting both as history and as natural (Earth) science.

The bottom line is that the Salton trough is below sea level, would vie with Death Valley save for the fact that the Salton trough now has a lake in it.

It will never be good for human habitation. All one has to do is go visit there to come to that conclusion.

The long-time American fantasy get-rich idea is to buy huge tracts of land that nobody before has wanted and turn it into a get-rich scheme.

It often does not work. It works sometimes (see Bob Hope and Palm Springs, or the whole city of Miami), but only a few of these schemes work.

Well it’s ‘bout time.

And I’m astonished to see this coming from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod!

reporter.lcms.org
Lutheran Church official calls for white nationalists to be excommunicated

A top Lutheran church official is calling for the excommunication of unrepentant white nationalists, attacking their beliefs as “evil.”

This is evil. We condemn it in the name of Christ,” Matthew Harrison, president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, wrote in a open letter last week in the Reporter, the official newspaper of his synod.

He and all leaders of the synod “categorically reject the horrible and racist teachings of the so-called ‘alt-right’ in toto (including white supremacy, Nazism, pro-slavery, anti-interracial marriage, women as property, fascism, death for homosexuals, even genocide),” Harrison wrote.

He said he was “shocked” to learn recently that a few members of LCMS congregations have been “propagating radical and unchristian ‘alt-right’ views” on social media.” Some of the posts even threatened church members and leaders online, he noted.

I had not realized that the two were different.

I had grown up where buzzard was considered a synonym for vulture. Which, apparently, is not actually the case. Buzzard is a type of hawk.

As they used to say in Pittsburgh, y’uns learned me good.

the buzzards are smaller and hunt live prey
turkey vultures are carrion fans

re: #166 Joe Bacon

Now have to see if there is any follow through or if the leaders walk it back within a few days. Or have simply made a statement they don’t intend to act on. Statements at this point are pretty meaningless to me given our current political state unless there are actions attempting to actually do something more than hand-wringing. (Doing nothing but hand-wringing is essentially a more polite form of performative BS.)

Where can I get that recipe?

I made a half recipe of this crust, rolled string cheese into the edges, and loaded it up with raw Italian sausage, muffuletta style olive salad, garlicky tomato sauce, and shredded cheeses. It’ll want to bake at 425 for 15-20 minutes. Brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle kosher salt and sprinkle granulated garlic before it goes in.

“…The DWR says there are over 500 underground water basins in the state. The state’s underground water system known as an aquifer spans about 400 miles of the Central Valley.

“We’re using an aquifer layer that’s about 500 feet below ground. It is a 50-foot thick or tall layer of sand and rocks, which has a clay layer both above and below that, which basically confines the water vertically, the water cannot escape vertically, it can only expand horizontally,” said Busch.”

Oh, and pro-tip - don’t let them give you anesthesia. The discomfort when they pump you with air is temporary, and twenty minutes later you’re 100% conscious, can drive yourself home or take an uber, and fart like a horse. Plus it’s fun to watch the live stream.

This is how we celebrate Black History Month in America. There’s slightly more focus on black people, so Conservatives act out. If we’re lucky, they then find out that’s not OK, then we get to hear them pretend to be victims over the consequences of their own actions.

Must have been a hell of a “clash.”

Sources say the Better Call Saul alum, who was set to star in the eight-episode series from Ridley Scott, was dismissed from the show following a clash with a co-star. Mando’s role has been recast, with Narcos alum Wagner Moura set to take on the part. Moura will reteam with Apple after previously appearing in Shining Girls for the streamer.

Sources said Mando, who played Nacho on all six seasons of AMC’s Better Call Saul, was let go after an on-set incident. Producers attempted to smooth things out, and the decision was made to let Mando go from the series and recast the role.

this kind of goes into my situation with an employer who has no intention, apparently, of ever giving me a raise.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel right now wrt my job. I need to take off a few hours one morning this week so I can mom-sit for my brother, who has a specialist doctor appointment. Do I feel compelled to make it up? Why no. *snort* I worked extra hours Thursday night because some people needed babysitting while they were coding a fix and I’m getting that time back one way or another.
