Congrats to the Miami Heat! They will be a HUGE underdog to the Denver Nuggets, but they have one of the best coaches and one of the best players you could ask for. As for the Nuggets, it is their first NBA Finals - and they have the best player in the game, Nikola Jokic. How good? The dude had a triple double this year (double figures in points, rebounds, assists) - in the first quarter of a game!

Also, it sounds like you folks were really hustling. 1000 flags per soldier over 6 hours is what? Placing a flag approximately every 20 seconds. Assuming no breaks.

The Army is just like any other large organization. There are both good and bad supervisors. The successful Officers will have very good relationship with their Sergeants as they realize their success will depend on how well the Sergeants and enlisted personnel perform.

In the unit I was working, we once got Major assigned to the unit who decided to make a Master Sergeants (E-8) life miserable. Nothing the M. Sgt. did was acceptable to the Major.

So after a couple of months, the Major received transfer orders to the Army equivalent of Thule, Greenland. A posting where families were not allowed. At the Majors good-bye party, the Master Sergeant took the Major aside and whispered into his ear “I told you not to fuck with me!”

Heres a little info about the Master Sergeant. He started his Army career by joining the Hawaii National Guard in 1939. He survived WW2 in a combat unit in the Pacific. He stayed in the Army and then survived 3 years of the Korean War. When I worked for him, he had about 28 years of total service. His uniform had 14 combat zone stripes which equals 7 years or so in combat zones.

He was the type of Sergeant the troops would follow to hell and back.

With this experience, I think he was on a first name basis with every senior Sergeant in the Pentagon. All it took was one phone call to a long time friend and the Major was on his way out of the Unit.

I think The Kinks were the most expensive ticket, and it was the worst live concert I have ever attended. Ray Davies was so drunk he careened sideways into a speaker stack, which collapsed. That was in Charlottesville.

I think The Kinks were the most expensive ticket, and it was the worst live concert I have ever attended. Ray Davies was so drunk he careened sideways into a speaker stack, which collapsed. That was in Charlottesville.

The Kinks (and I wasn’t a fan) put on one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended in the mid ’80s. Maybe they learned. The worst (and I was a fan) was The Replacements at the 688 Club in Atlanta. They were so fucked up that they could barely finish a song.

In one period in the late ’80s as I was trying to figure things out I was living at home with my parents. I was working two jobs: I installed tint on windows in the day and was a line-cook at night. My friends were doing sound at bar called the Blind Pig. I would go hang out after hours and a regular was Jay Bennett. He was in a couple of local bands, but later got picked up by Wilco; his firing from Wilco was the narrative of a documentary called “I am Trying to Break Your Heart.” It wasn’t long after that while I was home a few years later I heard that he had od’d. He had broken a hip jumping off a stage once and was managing pain with the usual. He was supposed to perform at a local charity event where bands do unusual covers and his friends think he was nervous and over-medicated.

Their military is largely intended for internal security, used whenever Lukashenko needs to deal with opposition to his rule. Yes, almost 10,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded on June 6th. However, over 160,000 allied soldiers landed that day.

Iirc, the cemetery holds US dead for the entirety of the Normandy Campaign. And some bodies were later returned to the US.

This is also the cemetery shown at the beginning of “Saving Private Ryan”.

The forest green roof and pair of bronze stags frozen in combat are impossible to miss as you drive down Interstate 80.

So are the two corporate buildings - 550,000 square feet of nearly empty office space, long offered for a $1 a year lease.

The water tower looms overhead, painted in the same green, heralding what once was: “Cabela’s World Headquarters, City of Sidney.”

For 54 years, Cabela’s made its home here, a juggernaut that kept the town humming. But in 2017, the sporting goods store sold for $5 billion to Bass Pro Shops - a takeover that eventually made 2,000 jobs vanish in a town of roughly 6,600 residents.

Sidney’s outlook turned grim. Without Cabela’s, leaders feared that the fourth-largest city in the Panhandle would empty out. A full-page ad in the local paper declared, Last one out, turn off the lights.

But six years later, the lights are still on. The reality in this Panhandle town: Complicated.

Sidney’s population did shrink in the years after the sale - then started growing again in 2020. The town has lost an estimated 436 residents since 2016, a 6% dip that mirrors population declines in similar Nebraska cities.

The numbers don’t signal a full recovery - Sidney’s median income, for example, has plummeted with the loss of Cabela’s high-paying corporate jobs.

But Sidney’s staying power still surprises experts, who say it’s driven by two factors.

The article reads like Cabela’s is completely gone, which is not true.

The Downtown Corporate Headquarters is gone, which employed two thousand people. The flagship store is still there and doing gangbusters.

You can still rent those office buildings for $1 a year though.

At one point shortly after Cabela’s was sold, 20% of the housing in Sidney and surrounding area went on the market at the same time.

Then the pandemic hit, and people looking for remote work found out you can own a home in Sidney with first-class high speed Internet for a tiny fraction of Denver or LA. A whole lot of remote workers moved in and bought up property, so now there’s around twenty properties for sale in all of Cheyenne County.

In the meantime, a lot of the corporate people who were suddenly laid off decided that was the time to become entrepreneurs, so they invested in new businesses in Sidney. That’s made the economy more resilient and less subject to a downturn because one business closed.

In the last few months, the only business which closed was Radio Shack. (The owner said the pandemic did his business in.)

They did declare bankruptcy and closed most of their stores. The store in Sidney persevered though as they were still turning a tidy profit for a small franchise.

It wasn’t closed long though: After a renovation which lasted a couple months, it re-opened as an electrical equipment supplier consultancy which employs more people for better wages than Radio Shack did.

The more I think about the Succession finale, the more I sort of like it.

Kendall threw the election to a candidate he doesn’t even like, knowing it would also cause problems for his daughter, because he thought that this guy would scuttle the buyout and Kendall would get the top job. But the deal didn’t get scuttled, Kendall is out, and now everyone knows (because that conference room was far from soundproof) that he killed somebody.

Roman went along with this, because “this is a guy we can do business with”, but then turned into a blubbering mess at the funeral and the guy won’t do business with him.

Shiv HATES the probable-new-president, opposed throwing the election to him, and then advised Mattson how to keep the deal even with the new guy. The Kinks (and I wasn’t a fan) put on one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended in the mid ’80s. Maybe they learned. The worst (and I was a fan) was The Replacements at the 688 Club in Atlanta. They were so fucked up that they could barely finish a song.

First time I saw The Replacements was at a little bar in Dilworth MN (about 5 miles from Fargo ND). It was right before Hootenanny came out. They started strong and really had the crowd going. Maybe about 75 people there. They took a break. Sat down with us and Bobby Stinson got enthralled by our buckets of beer. Not a bucket of ice with six beer bottles but a small metal bucket you bought full the first time for $2 and then $1 refills, maybe about 50 oz. When they finally got back onstage, Stinson spent maybe 10 minutes raving about the buckets before they went into a hardcore speed run of commercial jingles and TV theme songs.

But he knew the man who invited him, and knew that man sported the same ink Juarez was about to get — a design commonly linked to a suspected deputy gang known as the Executioners.

On Thursday afternoon, while testifying in a civil trial, Juarez pushed up a pant leg to reveal that tattoo: a helmet-wearing skeleton gripping a rifle. The rare and candid disclosure came in a case centered on the secretive world of deputy gangs, reports of which have plagued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for half a century and led to an array of investigations, studies and legal settlements.

The case that led to last week’s tattoo-bearing trial began in 2020, when Lt. Larry Waldie sued the county on claims of retaliation, alleging he was targeted and demoted after he “openly opposed” the Executioners’ control over the Compton station while he was acting captain there.

That trial continues, and its first two weeks have featured testimony from an array of current and former Sheriff’s Department officials. Some witnesses offered the names of everyone they’d seen with the so-called Executioners tattoo. One provided pictures of a detective bureau desk decorated with the group’s symbol in several places. Facebook continues to make itself less attractive to me, to even peruse for my relative’s posts.

The reworking of the “Recent” feed is atrocious.

Facebook has taken away the chronological listing of your feed’s posts, and made a shortened version of them.

Now “most recent” only goes back about 48 hours or less.

So if I miss checking my feed for, say, 4 days, the “most recent” won’t serve up posts past about 48 hours ago.

Also, I am finding that the “groups” to which I belong are getting fewer and fewer posts.

I suspect that Meta is finding Instagram more important these days, as a product. In my Facebook feed are now showing up Instagram posts that my “Friends” have liked or viewed.

Anyway, in the big picture the whole Social Media enterprise is changing. Some of this is the result of TikTok and the dying out of Facebook originals.

Some of this is Elmo’s destruction of Twitter.

I sense another transition, like what happened to blogging. Blogging was a big thing 10 or 15 years ago. It was replaced by Twitter/Facebook/Youtube.

Now the dominant online activity is TikTok, Instagram, and probably others of which I am unaware.

Me: I waiting for AM radio to make a comeback from the right-wing gold-bugging brink into something worthwhile again.

Yes, but it’s also largely the stuff that the US is OK with exporting. We don’t export all the latest and greatest, for obvious reasons. As to the latter concern, to be perfectly honest, that looks like an incredibly low bar right now. The revolt of the Christian home-schoolers

They were taught that public schools are evil. Then a Virginia couple defied their families and enrolled their kids.

They said goodbye to Aimee outside her elementary school, watching nervously as she joined the other children streaming into a low brick building framed by the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Christina and Aaron Beall stood among many families resuming an emotional but familiar routine: the first day of full-time, in-person classes since public schools closed at the beginning of the pandemic.

But for the Bealls, that morning in late August 2021 carried a weight incomprehensible to the parents around them. Their 6-year-old daughter, wearing a sequined blue dress and a pink backpack that almost obscured her small body, hesitated as she reached the doors. Although Aaron had told her again and again how brave she was, he knew it would be years before she understood how much he meant it — understood that for her mother and father, the decision to send her to school was nothing less than a revolt.

Aaron and Christina had never attended school when they were children. Until a few days earlier, when Round Hill Elementary held a back-to-school open house, they had rarely set foot inside a school building. Both had been raised to believe that public schools were tools of a demonic social order, government “indoctrination camps” devoted to the propagation of lies and the subversion of Christian families.

At a time when home education was still a fringe phenomenon, the Bealls had grown up in the most powerful and ideologically committed faction of the modern home-schooling movement. That movement, led by deeply conservative Christians, saw home schooling as a way of life — a conscious rejection of contemporary ideas about biology, history, gender equality and the role of religion in American government.

Christina and Aaron were supposed to advance the banner of that movement, instilling its codes in their children through the same forms of corporal punishment once inflicted upon them. Yet instead, along with many others of their age and upbringing, they had walked away.

‘National embarrassment’: Judge heaps shame on MAGA rioter who echoed sovereign citizen rhetoric

A judge on Tuesday heaped scorn upon Pauline Bauer, a Capitol rioter who became known for deploying sovereign citizen-style rhetoric in her legal defense filings.

United States District Court Judge Trevor McFadden gave Bauer a verbal lashing from the bench in which he shamed her for illegally breaking into the United States Capitol building on January 6th, 2021 and calling for the hanging of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

“You were part of a national embarrassment,” McFadden told Bauer, according to MacFarlane. “The crimes you and others committed were things Americans never thought they’d see.”

McFadden also informed Bauer that “you repeatedly perjured yourself.” He said she “showed shocking lack of remorse” for her actions, while also displaying “a pattern of disrespect for government institutions.”

All the same, Judge McFadden said that the United States Department of Justice’s sentencing recommendations for Bauer were too high and he gave her a 27-month prison sentence where she would get credit for time served in pretrial detention.

Bauer became notorious for sabotaging her own efforts to get out of pretrial detention over the past two years with her repeated courtroom outbursts and her highly unusual legal filings.

In July of 2021, for example, Bauer filed a motion to dismiss in which she described herself as “I, Me, Pauline Bauer the Living Soul, A Creation of God.” She then proceeded to demand that the court “Drop all Charges against my VESSEL - PAULINE BAUER and Dismiss the Case.”

Nashville is infested with armadillos.

TN considers them an invasive species, and I can’t use my .22 varmint gun in the suburbs.

I live trapped 5 in my yard last year. Don’t mind them digging in my yard, but if they’d leave the ornamental plants alone, I’d do likewise. It is a species that’s been lumbering around around for ~150 million years.

So no euthanasia, just relocate them over the river and through the woods. No bodies to dispose of.

One of the first indoor track practices every year was what our college coach called “heartrate 200’s”. Run 200 meters (our group would do about 28 seconds per), 60 second rest, run another 200 meters. Take your HR after a 60 second rest - if over 120 bpm, do one more set and then done. Shot-putters and a few other field people would be done after 4. Sprinters would stop dropping out after 8 or 10. My group of 800m and 1500m men would still be out there after 30 before the coach said “enough”.

I have to give The Federalist credit for one thing: It was an eye-catching headline. Yesterday, you see, the billionaire-backed right-wing website ran a semi-coherent rant from staff editor Samuel Mangold-Lenett under the headline: “Pride Month Is A Cynical Exercise In State-Enforced Homosexuality.”

Naturally, I clicked the link to find out just how the Federal government was going to be making people gay this June. Would straight men be herded up and put in dick-sucking camps? Would straight women be forced to wear flannel and trade their cars in for Subaru Outbacks?

What I found under the headline was an angry and unfocused rant about how “government and corporate America alike use their respective spheres of influence to form a public-private regime dedicated to immanentizing a disordered eschaton.”

I then looked up the phrase “immanentize the eschaton” and discovered that it was “a generally pejorative term referring to attempts to bring about utopian conditions in the world.” In other words, Mr. Mangold-Lenett is mad at the attempts by allegedly leftist corporations and the government to make the world a better place.

It has to be all that exercise you get, you are like Lance Armstrong without the blood doping.
During my low oxygen/hemoglobin bout I was hitting the 220’s and not feeling so great.

Yep, any bpm under 50 is “call a code, they are bradying down!” — it’s how I got my pacemaker. After my quint bypass in 2010 I had an extended stay attached to many tubes and cords at the hospital because of excess edema.

They couldn’t pull my chest tube until my heart stopped making too much fluid but it was doing that due to high bpm and bp. Meanwhile they tried to maintain my stats with their meds instead of the concoction that my cardiologist, family doctor, and I had experimented to get to over the years. Long story short the night before I was to go home after finally getting my chest tube out, they decided Amiodarone would be good to try, so after a code and pacemaker insert they finally let me go…

In that case, the Caucus gets almost nothing, and ends up with egg on its face. Alternatively, it is possible that Roy & Co. manage to sink the deal. In that case, the deadline will be imminent, the President will have tried to do things “the right way,” and will have cover to resort to extraordinary measures of some sort. The one outcome that is not on the table is “Rapid reboot with new bill in which the Freedom Caucus gets everything (or most of what) it wants.”

And then there is McCarthy. Once the Freedom Caucusers fail spectacularly, what will they do about him? If they don’t try to toss him out on his ear, then they will look like paper tigers. If they try and fail, say because House Democrats have secretly agreed to guarantee McCarthy’s speakership, then they will also look like paper tigers. If they try and succeed, it’s inconceivable that any other Republican will accept the devil’s bargain that McCarthy did, just so they can be speaker for a few months. No, that hypothetical next Speaker of the House would take note of the budget-ceiling bill, would notice that it’s way easier to work with the 20-30 centrist Democrats as opposed to the 20-30 Freedom Caucusers, and would ignore Roy and his friends.
