“The Kremlin has seized billions of roubles in cash and gold bars from Prigozhin, squeezing Wagner’s finances. But some fervent loyalists of President Vladimir Putin are proposing even more unforgiving solutions.”

In todays episode of “Don’t touch stuff you don’t know anything about”:

(CNN) - A university janitor who turned off a freezer after hearing multiple “annoying alarms,” ruined more than 20 years of research, according to a lawsuit filed against his employer by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York.

The janitor, who is not being sued in the lawsuit, was a contractor with Daigle Cleaning Systems Inc., who worked for several months in 2020 at the private research university in Troy.

The school is seeking more than $1 million in damages and legal fees from Daigle Cleaning Systems as a result of the incident.

The lab’s freezer contained over 20 years of research, including cell cultures and samples, to which a “small temperature fluctuation of three degrees would cause catastrophic damage,” according to the lawsuit filed with the Rensselaer County Supreme Court.

The college does not believe the janitor is at fault but instead blames Daigle Cleaning Systems for failing to properly train and supervise him, according to the suit.

Rioter Who Wrote ‘WE BREACHED THE CAPITOL OMG’ Admits She Breached the Capitol (Daily Beast, June 27, 2023)

A Florida woman who rioted at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6—then boasted about it on Parler and Facebook—pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of civil disorder. According to court documents, 33-year-old Corrine Montoni entered the Capitol through a broken door near the Senate. “WE BREACHED THE CAPITOL OMG,” she allegedly posted to right-wing social media platform Parler while inside. Montoni was only in the building for about 10 minutes, per the court filings, but penned a slew of damning social media posts that made her intentions clear. She allegedly wrote on Parler, “Insurrection is coming. Hold the line. Stay vigilant,” and “Storming the Capitol to take back our country from traitors! This is OUR HOUSEEEE!” Montoni even showed off some of the property damage in the Capitol that day, allegedly saying on Parler, “Here’s a pretty little view form [sic] inside the Capitol at our traitor DC police, with a smashed window.” Prosecutors say she also admitted that the rioters “broke a few windows” on Facebook, while calling the riot “peaceful” in the same breath. Montoni’s conviction could land her up to five years in prison.

Prigozhin’s March on Moscow (corrected)

How to understand Yevgeny Prigozhin’s march on Moscow and its sudden end? Often there are plots without a coup; this seemed like a coup without a plot. Yet weird as the mercenary chief’s mutiny was, we can draw some conclusions from its course and from its conclusion.

re: #14 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

At Prof. Timothy Snyder’s Substack blog yesterday.

Prigozhin’s March on Moscow (corrected)

Given what’s trickled out of Russia since Saturday, there’s a few points of my own:

1. It looks more and more like the only “deal” that was made was between Lukashenko and Prigozhin, that Putin was not a party to it and is resentful that his puppet now has some measure of leverage over him. This is going to cause all sorts of friction, if only because it is central to their reputations as strongmen to be seen as the man getting all he wants in the end.

2. This was a one time, all-or-nothing gamble for Prigozhin. It’s pretty much impossible now for him to replicate what happened Saturday, if only because whatever trust he had with those who participated is now spent. At best they think him a “hero” who has now been forced into exile, but the more likely thought is he’s a coward who has hung them all out to dry. If he tried to call up those same men to make another march on Moscow, the most likely scenario is his dumpy ass being delivered to the Kremlin in chains.

3. When Prigozhin said he didn’t want to “spill any blood,” the blood he was talking about was his own. That odds are once the 8,500 mutineers made it to Moscow, their lives would have been forfeit. They’d have been corralled, rounded up, and any who refused to surrender fired upon until they were all dead or unable to continue fighting. Hence why Prigozhin never left Rostov-on-Don and why he was hauling ass out within minutes of making his announcement.

4. The days of the Wagner PMC’s Russia branch are numbered. If you’re a Wagner soldier and you’re still in Ukraine, the choice in the near future is pretty clear: Sign the contract or go to prison. But odds are even those who sign the contracts and end up as conscripts in the Russian Army will end up in prison once their usefulness to the MOD has ended. The branches in Africa or other war zones will be allowed to continue independent operation because they’re bringing in money, but they’re also effectively exiles now. If they return to Russia, all that awaits them is prison…if they’re lucky.

Tangtang Zhao, 36, of Chicago, stole CDC-issued COVID-19 vaccination cards from the pharmacy where he worked, and sold them to buyers across the country through an online marketplace, according to the DOJ.

“During a three-week timeframe in March and April 2021, Zhao posted listings for over 650 COVID-19 vaccination cards that he advertised as “authentic” and “straight from the CDC.” In total, he sold 630 cards to approximately 200 unique buyers, who paid Zhao more than $5,600,” according to a Justice Department press release.

I expect a “Bring back DDT!” movement on the right any day now.

DDT is legal in the US for mosquito malaria control.

Since 1996, EPA has been participating in international negotiations to control the use of DDT and other persistent organic pollutants used around the world. Under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme, countries joined together and negotiated a treaty to enact global bans or restrictions on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), a group that includes DDT. This treaty is known as the Stockholm Convention on POPs. The Convention includes a limited exemption for the use of DDT to control mosquitoes that transmit the microbe that causes malaria - a disease that still kills millions of people worldwide.

Whoever verbed it should be sentenced to a thousand readings of Strunk and White.

It’s been a verb for 400 years — from Merriam-Webster:

Gift as a verb has a 400-year history of use and means “to present someone with a gift.” Some feel strongly that give is the correct word, but gift-as-a-verb is an acceptable and efficient alternative. Since the 1990s the word has surged in popularity, perhaps in part because of a well-known Seinfeld episode concerning “regifting” and “degifting.”

While it’s true that gift has meant “to present someone with a gift” for 400 years, the verb has never been so widely used as it is now. It’s impossible to say exactly why this is, but we may be able to place a smidgen of the blame on a certain comedian.

Lots of people blame Jerry Seinfeld, as the dictionary entry notes that “gift” as a verb has never been as popular in English before two “Seinfeld” episodes used it (as “regift” and “degift,” both of which are not words according to my browser’s dictionary).

So off to the Airing of Grievances about “gifting.”

Russian Guard will receive heavy weapons and tanks

The Russian Guard will have heavy weapons and tanks, said the head of the department, Viktor Zolotov, at a meeting with journalists. His words are reported by RIA Novosti.

According to Zolotov, this issue has already been “discussed with the president.”

What else did the head of the National Guard say:

The work of law enforcement agencies during the military mutiny can be assessed as excellent.
The rapid advance of Wagner across the country is explained by the concentration of forces near Moscow.
Zolotov was constantly in touch with Putin during the mutiny.
Any provocations in Moscow, if they had arisen against the background of the rebellion, would have been suppressed.
“We knew that we would win, the rebels would not have taken Moscow.”
The rebellion was prepared by the secret services of the West, because they knew about it a few weeks before it began.

Either he’s not in control of the Senate GOP Caucus (which is contraindicated by his entire career), or he approves (or at least won’t stand in the way) of sabotaging the military.

Corporate power vs state power. Pennsylvania requires out of state companies to agree to settle things in PA courts as part of the licensing process for doing business in the state. Norfolk Southern was crying about that being a violation of due process under the 14th amendment. The actual case was more complicated, but that was their argument.

The court basically said that no one was forcing Norfolk Southern to do business in PA, and they should live with the agreement they signed.

More flavorful write-up here.

Exactly!

As you well know -

In the authoritarian/warlord world, power is associated with the ruler rather than with the state.

Thus power cannot be allowed to accumulate to a single organization as that might be a threat to the authoritarian.

An additional way to keep organizations weak is to play them off against other organizations. Which is also what is happening here.

This results in weak institutions that cannot do things like overthrow a dictator, or, idk, win a war.

It helped tremendously with my depression for a couple of years, then stopped working, so I stopped using around the beginning of the pandemic.

Another interesting Merriam Webster discussion here:merriam-webster.com.

Basically loan was used as a verb 700 years ago and then fell out of favor.

It turns out that the verb loan had fallen out of use in England during the 18th and 19th centuries in favor of lend. (Lend is the earlier word, dating back to about the 11th century, and comes from the Old English verb lænan.) But loan as a verb survived in American English, which hadn’t kept pace with the changes to the language that were happening in British English. British English speakers noticed the verb and decried it as uncouth and provincial—it had to be if it was in the mouths of Americans.

Pittsburgh, are you okay?

When I lived in Western PA when it came to the police that part of the Commonwealth was Frank Rizzo land. They loved Rizzo. So I’m not surprised to see what’s going down there now.

The folks that brought you Hákarl, bring you “Pizza with Jam” -
(At least it isn’t pineapple jam.)

Going for PIZZA in Iceland | Menu + Prices!

For the curious, the jam is apparently a red current jam. And I have heard of pizza with jam being served in parts of Latin America, such as Brazil, as well.

Even when conservatives are out of power, they will find ways to expend tax money to fight culture wars. (WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh)

HARRISBURG, Pa. —

A Pennsylvania state court on Tuesday rejected the latest Republican effort to throw out the presidential battleground state’s broad mail-in voting law that has become a GOP target following former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims about election fraud.

It is the latest of several refusals by a state court to invalidate Pennsylvania’s 2019 mail-in voting law, enacted barely months before the COVID-19 pandemic began and Trump began attacking mail-in voting.

In the lawsuit filed last year, 14 current and former Republican state lawmakers said the court must invalidate the law because two earlier court decisions triggered a provision written that says the law is “void” if any of its requirements are struck down in court.

The law has a requirement that voters must hand-write a date on the outer envelope of their mail-in ballot in order for the ballot to be counted. The Republicans argued that the two earlier court decisions refused to enforce the hand-written date requirement — meaning the law should be thrown out.

But the Commonwealth Court, in a 24-page opinion, unanimously found that the court decisions did not invalidate “the dating provision” of the law. It dismissed the lawsuit, in favor of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration and the national and state Democratic parties.
