YET TO BE
(Rhiannon Giddens/Marcus Hummon)

She was born on a farm
Working the clay
She ran off when she was 16
Down a long country road
With nowhere to go
She knew that she had to leave

She hopped a one-way train
With a ticket to ride
In the third class back with the others
She watched the farm fade away
Just hoping and praying
She’d have a better life than her mother’s

It’s a long long way from where we’ve been
The here and now is better than it was back then
Today may break your heart
But tomorrow holds the key
We’ve come so far but the best is yet to be

He was born on the farm
But he didn’t wanna stay
His daddy said he was a fool
So he crept away in the dead of night
And got a steamer out of Liverpool

It’s far far away from the green fields at home

To the wild Atlantic gray
He was hoping for work and he prayed for the love
Waiting half a world away

It’s a long long way from where we’ve been
The here and now is better than it was back then
Today may break your heart
But tomorrow holds the key
We’ve come so far but the best is yet to be

She was mopping the floor
He was working the bar
It was a divine collision of the human heart
It was east of her and west of him
They were wishing on the same bright star
And then the baby was a brand new start

In the hollow of his hand
The road is rising up to meet them

Thank you for sharing that. As someone who has never been to Ireland nor gone deep into the culture, it can be easy to forget how deeply the Catholic Church penetrated the psyches of the Irish people and the ills that brought.

That Facebork post is quite powerful.

All the conservatives and Christians now claiming that Sinéad O’Conner was a great singer or they support her family were the same ones who condemned her over the Pope photograph.

As the article notes, her own father supported her but asked her to stop calling attention to the problem because he believed a Christian would assassinate her.

Catholics around the world were outraged at her, while every atheist in every country knew they were all Liars for Jesus and giving money to an international child-rape organisation. There’s a reason she became an atheist. Atheists were called bigots. We still are.

And yet the rapes continue, in every denomination.

There is a push in Ireland now to investigate what appears to be a worldwide church coverup of raping nuns as well.

BrightNight, a renewable power company, plans to build the solar array on the former Starfire mine, which is in Perry, Knott and Breathitt counties. The plan is to build the project in four stages, ultimately reaching capacity to generate 800 megawatts of electricity after the final phase, said BrightNight CEO Martin Hermann. The investment in the project would be $1 billion. It would be the largest solar project in Kentucky and one of the largest in the nation on a former surface mine, the partners said in a news release.

All ultra-right parties always need to find an enemy. The circle of the in-group is constantly shrinking until there is no one left to ostracize, and then they start eating themselves. And hopefully, then the party dies.

NYT v Sullivan is still in place. He’s going to have to prove actual malice. And on top of that he will probably have to prove that the use of those words weren’t editorial in nature and used in the “legal” sense. The governor is trying to save face, but as a general rule, if you’re a public figure and you’re suing for defamation, you’re losing.

His admission/stipulation was one of the most amazing things I’ve read as a lawyer. He admitted they were defamatory statements, but is still claiming a First Amendment defense. The problem is, defamation is, by definition, non-protected speech. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a cause of action for defamation. As a legal strategy, I just don’t understand it.

According to the California Highway Patrol, drivers were treated to a bizarre scene when a naked motorist exited her car and began firing a gun into the air Tuesday at a central Bay Area span.

The CHP said there was a reckless driver report on eastbound Interstate 80 around 4:40 p.m. The caller further told 911 dispatchers the driver appeared to have a gun.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) nearly came to blows when they ran into each other outside of the House chamber, the Daily Beast reports.

Said McCarthy: “If you ever say something like that to me again, I’m gonna kick the shit out of you.”

Another member provided context: “They were in each other’s faces. Basically nose-to-nose. And Swalwell said something like, ‘Are we really gonna do this?’”

After some back-and-forth, McCarthy issued a challenge to Swalwell: “Call me a pussy again, and I’ll kick your ass.”

Said Swalwell: “You. Are. A. Pussy.”

After both men stared each other down for another moment, McCarthy eventually relented.

Typhoon Doksuri is in the off-shore area now in Southeast China, having moved between Taiwan and The Phillipines. The storm’s top windspeed is 105 knots (194 km/h) with gusts to 130 knots (241 km/h). Maximum wave heights are 40 feet (12 metres). The storm will be inland as a tropical cyclone with 95 knot winds in a few hours.

The prognostication has changed for the future strength of the storm. It is now expected to pass over the Huangpu River (the river that flows through Shanghai) as a tropical storm, before being downgraded to a tropical depression after passing through the valley.

Cyclone Doksuri tracking chart (Joint Typhoon Warning Center)

The area has been suffering drought, but the flooding rains of a tropical cyclone aren’t how that’s addressed.

But wait, there’s two.

Shanghai isn’t out of the woods, either. A tropical depression has formed formed well-east of The Phillipines, dubbed 6W. That storm is expected to rapidly intensify as it steers between Taiwan and Japan, striking the Chinese coast very close to the city centre of Shanghai with 100 knot (185 km/h) winds, with the strongest winds from the typhoon driving straight into the harbour and mouth of the Huangpu River.

He’s probably just hoping to stop and cauterize any further attempts at discovery, which he wasn’t complying with anyway. At this point he probably figures a directed verdict is acceptable as long as the jury can’t get anything further from him during the penalty phase.

I usually don’t comment on public interactions, but jfc.
So in the checkout line, guy about mid 50’s has a bag of frozen shrimp, on sale, but sale price not happening.
The circular has the sale price, but the young lady working it can’t figure it out.
Call for supervisor.
Short exchange, and it turns out the fine print says “ with purchase of 25 bucks of other items.”
He turns it down, turns to me and says sorry for holding me up.
I say, no big deal, small print gets me too.
Then he mumbles some about jackass president something something.
I said “What president?”
Huh?
I repeat myself.
Uh, Biden.
My exact words to him was “ Oh. You a Trump boy?”
He says with hesitation “yes”.
I then replied, “ Oh you a smart boy.”
He did not know what to say.
He leaves, and I look at the young lady and say “I know who the jackass is.”
She smiled for quite a while.
Small pleasures.

My wife just spent $100 on Penzey’s Spices Website.

After the sale went through, it threw up this page:

About Republicans

As we’ve now said on our first-ever About Us page on our website, there’s something unique about humankind’s relationship with spices that time and again have caused spices to be a driving force for change. We live in a time calling out for change and for solutions to the very real problems our country and our planet face. There’s two very different futures ahead for us totally dependent on whether we solve these problems or not. With so much at stake we feel obligated to use the unique position spices hold in our lives to try to help promote the solutions to these problems as best we can.

Watching the slow decline of the Republican Party over the last half century, and the steep decline/bottom falling out over the last decade, it can be easy to see the nonsense that has overtaken the party as pretty much random. Once you start seriously looking at the problems America and the world face and who and what are standing in the way of solving those problems, it quickly becomes clear there is nothing random to what the Republicans are promoting.

The Republican departure from conservative values and embrace of what, from a distance, looks a whole lot like insanity didn’t happen by chance. All of it has been intelligently crafted with the goal of preserving the position of those who profit from the inhumanity that is at the very roots of pretty much every problem we are facing. From the environment, to racism/discrimination, to health, to saving our democracy at home and growing it abroad, half the time Republicans are intentionally blocking the solution to the problems we face. The other half of the time they are the problem we face.

He’s probably just hoping to stop and cauterize any further attempts at discovery, which he wasn’t complying with anyway. At this point he probably figures a directed verdict is acceptable as long as the jury can’t get anything further from him during the penalty phase.

Isn’t it simply that for purposes of legal proceedings, he won’t perjure himself but outside of the court he wants to continue supporting Trump in the claim the election was stolen? He needs to be locked up for the rest of his life for his efforts to destroy our democracy.

A Three Hour Tour  Jul 27, 2023 • 3:13:38pm

re: #67 nines09

I usually don’t comment on public interactions, but jfc.
So in the checkout line, guy about mid 50’s has a bag of frozen shrimp, on sale, but sale price not happening.
The circular has the sale price, but the young lady working it can’t figure it out.
Call for supervisor.
Short exchange, and it turns out the fine print says ” with purchase of 25 bucks of other items.”
He turns it down, turns to me and says sorry for holding me up.
I say, no big deal, small print gets me too.
Then he mumbles some about jackass president something something.
I said “What president?”
Huh?
I repeat myself.
Uh, Biden.
My exact words to him was ” Oh. You a Trump boy?”
He says with hesitation “yes”.
I then replied, ” Oh you a smart boy.”
He did not know what to say.
He leaves, and I look at the young lady and say “I know who the jackass is.”
She smiled for quite a while.
Small pleasures.

I seemed to have missed the chapter in my mandatory 12th Grade Government class which taught that the Leader of the Free World personally dictates the fine print Terms and Conditions section of grocery store sales circulars.

If you read your assignment you would have seen that in the small print of the constitution.

Putin may have banned Barbie in Russia as a symbol of the decadent West, but that hasn’t stopped Moscovites and other Russians from clamoring to see Greta Gerwig’s new film.

Yes. The recommended maximum penalty for a charge of obstruction of justice is 20 years; I lost my link to the federal sentencing guidelines, but I’d be surprised if it was more than the Espionage Act stuff. Nevertheless, they are throwing the WHOLE book at him, one subsection at a time.

It helps that this allegation is as clear-cut as obstruction of justice gets — trying to wipe out evidence.
