Happy new year’s eve from Denver, lizards! I’ve been in full on lurker mode since my tech company shut down and let everyone go (with a decent severance) in August.
They’d been prepping all year to relocate me from the Manhattan satellite office to San Francisco. So when they closed, the spouse and I decided to move back to Colorado instead. It’s where we met and married. Plus it’s much closer to all the adult kiddos in Santa Fe and LA.
Getting motivated for a grand 2024, ready to kick some fascist ass 😎🎊🥂

I was having a pretty rough New Year’s Eve six years ago tonight:

I wish all passive-aggressive net trolls, drunkards, dopers and other pop culture cultists a quick but fiery and painful death in drunk driving accidents on their high holy day of New Year’s Eve. Just please try to avoid taking the rest of us with you. Roast in peace.

I am feeling much, much better now so I would like to add MAGAts, Putin fanboys, book burners, insurrectionist conspira-liars, and Covid denying plague-rats to that list.

When did it become common practice for journalists to tell us what a person “thinks” or “believes?”

You do not fucking know what they think or believe. All you know is what they say or do. Stop legitimizing horrible people by implying they’re honest.

You’d have to be a racist American to think there’s such a thing as “white culture.”

For the rest of us, there’s Irish culture, Italian culture, German, Spanish, French, English, Scottish, Polish, Swedish, Greek, Ukrainian, Dutch, and a dozen more.

Each of these cultures has a history, a language, a cuisine, a musical tradition, a distinct architecture, type of painting/sculpture, etc.

24
goddamnedfrank  Dec 31, 2023 • 12:38:12pm

Also, and this should kind of be obvious, but Grimes is doing that not-so-subtle rhetorical framing thing where “white culture” gets praised overall, but any non-white contributions to humanity get attributed to specific individual actors. Who we are then allowed to infer are somehow outliers.

There are even American sub-variants of every one of those cultures, precisely for that reason - because an Irish-American is going to have a very different perspective on things than a native Irishman will.

I live in Nashville and a billboard on Gallatin Road (a main artery going NNE out of the city) at Briley Parkway (the main part of one of our main ring roads) has recently run two JewBelong ads (the last one was “Hamas is your problem too”) and now it’s got a fucking Epoch Times ad with some dude’s mug on it.

The fact those ads ran/are running on a billboard in a relatively diverse and liberal part of a city that’s a blue dot in a sea of red gives me pause, especially IRT the current Epoch Times ad; my area of town is being seen by multiple somebodies as a political battleground and they’re buying billboards where I’ve never seen anything other than standard commercial ads for decades in order to push agendas.

This year is going to be… interesting.

Oh I can’t wait for them to go after the 1973 musical version of Lost Horizon…

That was actually given as a “not-recommend” at the end of the Late Seating episode reviewing Woody Allen’s Sleeper; Steve and Jason’s schtick is that they each recommend or not-recommend the movie being reviewed in the episode after the plot recap and giving their opinions/analysis, then, before saying what movie is on-deck for the next episode, each give another movie as an opposite recommend/not-recommend, with Jason doing his for a movie released the same year as the one in the review.

Well, in his not-recommend of the 1973 musical version of Lost Horizon, Jason dragged it over the coals hard for being a horrible remake and a even-more-horrible musical (listen at about 1:05:00):

What idiots. Taylor and Dolly are great examples of the real power that comes from makeup when it is used to show a woman’s strength rather than something to just attract men. They use it as a shield/sword. AOC gave a great discussion of this a few years ago:

“There’s this really false idea that if you care about makeup or your interests are in beauty and fashion that’s somehow frivolous but I actually think these are some of the most substantive decisions we make and we make them every morning.”

“Our culture is so predicated on diminishing women and preying on our self-esteem, and so it’s quite a radical act—and it’s almost like a mini protest—to love yourself in a society that’s always telling you you’re not the right weight, you’re not the right color, you’re not the right, you know, whatever it is,”

They are not using makeup for men. They use it for themselves.

While it’s not perfect, and it takes some ‘splainin’ for most Americans who have lived with one-or-the-other ballots all their lives, I think it offers an improvement over that system. In particular, it solves our problem with third-party candidates who siphon off votes from main party candidates. With ranked choice voting, the Berniebros can vote for their useless idiot of choice, but when they inevitably fail, the votes can instead be counted for the Democrat, reducing margins for error in battleground states.

I reserve spoons for eyeball gouging. They’re perfect for that purpose.

If rock bands didn’t all have some degree of the behind-the-scenes inter-personnel conflicts, all music would be categorized as yacht rock. Instead, we had the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, CSN&Y, the Beatles, and so many others.

And siblings. My favorite is Chris Robinson, after The Black Crowes, started a band called The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, without his brother and fellow Crowe, Rich Robinson.

Oasis and the Gallagher brothers is an epic tale of siblings in a band gone very, very wrong.

Tanerite in the Holler Y’all!

It’s going to be noisy out here tonight. I can feel it in my bones.

My take is it won’t help much. It’s a poor workman who blames their tools.

That’s the problem. If the voters don’t take time to consider what they are voting for the style of voting makes little difference, and here in North America we have lazy voters.

Spent a good part of the day going through boxes of CDs that have been sitting in the garage for the last 13 years untouched. Vacuumed the dust and mouse poop off them and wiped each case down with soapy water and put them in a clean box for transfer to the groove pit.

Anybody want to share an opinion or evaluation of Ranked Choice Voting? My first reaction is not to trust it. It’s catching on here.

Does it have “none of the above” as any of the choices?

Because I would really love to have that if Ranked Choice Voting ever shows up for the Republican primary in Kentucky.

Hell, I’d like to have that option right now on the usual GOP primary ballot here.

Not yet. Maybe we can get that in there.
