Apple shifts gears on its autonomous car ambitions, delays launch
I’m thinking the Apple Car program may actually be a Skunk Works inside Apple working on tech that it wants to keep even more secret. A lot of the stuff for an autonomus car (AI, LIDAR, etc) could be found in such things as Apple Vision Pro. Thus they keep pushing back the date as they keep developing products.
I know, not likely but it would make a great story.

Florida going all in with Christopher Rufo’s plan to kill child labor laws.
Florida is hot on the heels of other red states in the race to erase labor protections for children. The Republican-sponsored bill to allow kids as young as 16 to work full-time jobs cleared another hurdle Tuesday, when it passed the state’s House Commerce Committee, clearing it to go to the floor.
In discussing the bill, state Rep. Kevin Steele said that “we’ve been weakening our society” and the fix for that is to “change your youth, the youth, out there to have them start working full-time.” For real…
Great interview, well worth reading the whole thing.

Public records obtained by media site and activist group More Perfect Union show FGA representatives providing Chaney’s office with the text of the bill three weeks before she filed a “nearly verbatim” version and following up with talking points to counteract any backlash.

Removes restrictions on domestic workers.
The bill also replaces the word “shall” with “may” in several provisions concerning when children 15 years old and younger can work, which could create a legal gray area surrounding the law’s interpretation.
Perfect for human traffickers specializing in underage ‘domestic workers.’

The first question that should be asked to anyone pushing this bill is “So, does this mean we can finally raise the minimum wage?” After all, for ages now, the most common argument has been that minimum wage jobs are strictly meant for teens to earn some spending cash and learn some job skills.

Business is business. Kids are often paid a lower wage than the state minimums. They can work up to 50 hours a week and can serve alcohol before they are legally allowed to drink it. And even blue states are open to the ‘character’ building aspect. One argument I read - if kids play football until 9 pm they should be allowed to work if they want.
Pretty much used by service industries that cannot afford to pay adults a living wage. Money talks.

I don’t think it will happen as the case is still going up to the Supreme Court. The recent ruling is not a permanent decision.
The question whether Abbott must remove the state’s razor wire is part of a case that will be decided by the notoriously conservative New Orleans-based 5th Circuit of Appeals in coming weeks. That decision faces a likely appeal to the Supreme Court.
I expect he will wait until we see just what the final verdict is. Which likely won’t happen until after election day.

A teenage male inmate charged with murder escaped from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on Wednesday.Philadelphia police said 17-year-old Shane Pryor fled from CHOP’s ER parking lot at 34th and Spruce Streets, around 11:56 a.m.
“When staff pulled up in the driveway of Children’s Hospital, we now know through video evidence, as the male was exiting that car, he was able to escape from staff and run from this area on foot,” Frank Vanore, the Deputy Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department, said.

“I want him to turn himself in and Mommy is going to continue to fight for him the way that I was fighting for him,” Pryor’s mother said. “I want him to turn himself in so he don’t get in more trouble. Just know we’re going to fight his case and get other resources that are actually going to fight for him in hopes that he doesn’t get a life sentence or charged with more because he ran away because he’s just scared. He’s a kid. He’s been in there since he was 14, he still has a 14-year-old mentality, even though he’s 17. He’s been in there since he was 14. He’s just terrified.”
Police say Pryor was brought to CHOP for treatment concerning a hand injury. Officers and K9s have been searching extensively around CHOP for the 17-year-old, including inside buildings and parking garages.

Tar and Feathers are too good for these traitor Republicans!
Dems use ‘parade of embarrassments’ in Biden probe to tar and feather House Republicans
When Republicans recaptured the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2022 midterms, Democrats argued that their small majority would launch frivolous Hunter Biden investigations rather than focus on issues that affect the quality of Americans’ lives such as health care, job creation and the environment. And the GOP’s House majority, as they predicted, has been aggressively probing Hunter Biden’s business activities and may impeach his father, President Joe Biden.
But the Daily Beast’s Riley Rogerson, in an article published on January 25, reports that House Democrats, rather than feeling intimidated, are responding to the probes with brutal mockery and slamming them as a joke.
One of those Democrats is Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida), who told the Daily Beast, “They’ve decided to turn it into Cirque Du Soleil Oversight where literally, it’s just a total show. If that is the game that they are going to play, then game on.”
Rogerson cites Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), Rep. Dan Goldman (D-New York), Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Florida), Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) and Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pennsylvania) as other examples of House Democrats who have “torn into Republican rhetoric” during the Bidens-related probes and are “exposing their puffery as political theater.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland) described House Democrats who have been forcefully pushing back against these anti-Bidens theatrics as “the Truth Squad.”
Raskin told the Daily Beast, “I was basically looking for extremely hardworking, detail-oriented members who know how to throw a punch in the media. Because I knew exactly what we would be up against.”
Rogerson notes that even some House Republicans consider Rep. James Comer’s (R-Kentucky) anti-Bidens efforts a waste of time.
A House Republican who was interviewed by The Messenger on condition of anonymity complained, “It’s been a parade of embarrassments.”
re: #86 No Malarkey!
Here’s why that’s bad news for Biden (again). All economic news is bad news for Biden. Good news is bad because it wont last through the election. Bad news is bad for Biden because of course it is.
Some editorialists are finally getting it. Understanding it all, including the complicit activity of other editors and media organizations.
Realpolitik and self-interest may also be at play. Some reporters, editors and producers in mainstream media are positioning themselves with the expectation that Trump will win the election. They want access to his regime; the first Trump presidency was a media feeding frenzy.
Furthermore, many leading voices in the media, especially the professional centrists and institutionalists, have been conditioned by privilege to believe they are immune from any possible danger or threat, even from a dictatorial regime. Because of their skin color, their gender and sexual orientation, their class backgrounds and their lives rich with social and cultural capital, they cannot imagine they ever could become targets of state-sponsored violence. They may well learn otherwise.
re: #68 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
Naaah, and I don’t know why he resigned.
And now…This!
Longtime Mike Johnson pastor faces financial mismanagement claims from his own congregants
Louisiana pastor Brad Jurkovich, who for years was the pastor to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), is facing allegations of financial mismanagement from members of his own congregation, reports The Daily Beast.
In a lawsuit filed by congregants in the church, Jurkovich is accused of violating church bylaws while also “alleging that church leaders improperly rewrote the 80-year-old rules in a ‘power grab’ that transformed the congregation into a Jurkovich-led ‘dictatorship,’ giving him essentially absolute control over financial and strategic decisions,” writes The Daily Beast.
What’s more, the congregants allege that Jurkovich “engaged in self-dealing and impermissibly steered church funds to another right-wing faith-based organization with a clear ideological and tacitly political agenda — the Conservative Baptist Network — where Jurkovich is a top official.”
The suit goes on to allege that Jurkovich diverted funds to the Conservative Baptist Network that had originally been earmarked to go to the Southern Baptist Convention, which had angered Jurkovich for not making a full-throated denouncement of critical race theory.
And that’s not all — a review of Jurovich’s pastoral history by The Daily Beast found that he was ousted as pastor at the Victory Life Church Lubbock, Texas in the 2000s.

Depends on how you define original. Halford, Tipton and Ian Hill are still in the band. Scott Travis has drummer for them since the 90’s, I think, and Ritchie Faulkner (KK’s replacement) has played with them for at least 10 years…
I saw this lineup in the before times, with Saxon opening. It was a solid show - I’d go again.
I think Hill is the only true original band member, but Halford and Tipton have been in the band since the very early days.
re: #107 Nerdy Fish
I figure President Biden will squeeze out as much of the budget as he can to help our friends. Whether it’ll be enough to get through the election is the question. Beyond that, there are a lot of doubts about regaining the House, and we haven’t even talked about the possibility of losing the Senate.
The GOP’s House majority is narrow, and with some states being compelled to draw new black majority districts and the continued salience of Dobbs, I believe it is likely that the Democrats will regain control of the House. Unfortunately, the Senate will probably be Republican, however with the need to support Trump’s campaign over, McConnell will want to restart aid to Ukraine.

Assuming the 2024 election ends in another Trump failure what is the GQP course moving forward?
Will Trump actually recede into the past and allow them to attempt a course change? Or will he (or his spawn and cult) simply lurk on the sidelines for at least another election cycle?

The GOP is abandoning Ukraine, because that is what Trump wants. Putin is getting a solid return on his investment.

Trump and his cult will lurk on the sidelines, as much as a man like Trump can ever “lurk.” However, I think after 2024, the combined weight of the shifting electorate and the likely House victory will start to turn the tide against them, and they will find themselves ostracized and alienated. The Republican Party will probably start to schism as 2028 approaches.

The betrayal of Ukraine is an enormous tragedy. I don’t think Russia can conquer Ukraine, but it now appears that any further US assistance will have to wait until after the election, assuming President Biden is reelected, the Democrats regain control of the House, and Trump’s next coup attempt fails.

Tesla TSLA.O tumbled more than 8% on Thursday after CEO Elon Musk warned sales growth would slow this year despite price cuts that have already hurt margins and raised investor concerns at the world’s most valuable automaker.Musk said growth would be “notably lower” as Tesla focuses on a cheaper, next-generation electric vehicle to be made at its Texas factory in the second half of 2025, which is expected to spark the next boom in deliveries.
But his remarks fell flat with investors, with Tesla set to lose more than $50 billion in market value, if premarket loss hold. Its stock was already down 16.4% this month, as of last close.
“The Tesla headlines have essentially gone from bad to worse,” said TD Cowen analysts, noting that the fourth-quarter revenue and profit were also below expectations.
Shares of other EV makers also fell, with Rivian Automotive Inc RIVN.O, Lucid Group LCID.O and Fisker FSR.N down between 1.2% and 2.4%.
The EV industry has been grappling with a slowdown in demand for more than a year and the price cuts by Tesla will likely worsen the pressure on the startups and automakers such as Ford F.N.

Nope. But the GQP and media seem to be. Therefore I don’t see it as much of a factor in the machinations of Trump or his cult. And until he gets actual time in a prison I don’t see a conviction as meaningful since even held at MaL he will still have all the media access to blather in. Plus Fox and NewsMax will have “Trump Held Hostage” counters running from day to day as well since they pander to such.

We can only speculate. The GOP base has been thoroughly radicalized, so I expect that Trumpism, meaning fascism, will remain the ascendant ideology in the GOP for some time to come, even without Trump. As long as Trump is free and alive, I expect him to remain the titular leader of the GOP.

These aren’t civil cases. The defendant has to be present for criminal trials (IANAL). It’ll take up a lot of his time.
Also too, declaring candidacy subjects you to a lot of restrictive rules, that’s why politicians wait as long as they can to do it.

i can still kind of remember—i think one of Reagan’s elections—where the national map had California red as he cruised to victory. Probably the second one where he was stuffing Mondale into the electoral locker. Weird to see how demographics has turned what I think for years was a Republican state into a state that would probably cut off an arm before giving a Republican its electoral votes.

I suspect that Trump would view a short stint in jail for contempt of court as yet another fund raising opportunity. The judge should fine him instead, which Trump would also use as a fund raising opportunity, but it probably wouldn’t generate the same amount of revenue as jail would.

This is an important discussion that often gets dismissed in my field and I think everyone should at least skim the article.
One of the biggest frustrations I had while working at a Fortune 500 Medical Device company was never having the opportunity to really talk to the patients. The company would bring in leading expert physicians, have engineers go to observe implants, attend conferences and meet with thought leaders. The company has multiple advisory boards composed of clinicians and thought leaders and the company finally set up an advisory board about five years ago composed of nurses and other “stakeholders” that included one patient representative (a patient with personal experience of only one of the many therapy solutions). There are now a few usability engineers, but that area is way understaffed and focuses on clinician users.
Part of the problem is reimbursement and money. I might have been able to get a director’s ear if I had an idea that would eliminate having a patient drive two hours one-way for a fifteen-minute device programming session. Such discussions always end with “how would the company get paid for that?” and “well, it’s always good for the patient to have an opportunity to meet with their physician”.
There’s very little incentive for medical device companies, hospitals, clinics, to make life easier for a patient.

if/when he’s no longer viable as a winning candidate (vs whining and grievance) and they see he’s dragging down others with him - ie losing the senate/house, state races etc., some power hungry people will likely come to accept that it’s him
Sure. But the electorate? The nutty republican population as a whole? Nope. They’re so reality challenged they’re still expecting JFK Jr. to return from the dead.
Anytime you think about acceptance of anything that might be normal…Think of JFK Jr. That encapsulates the republican brain worm perfectly.

My exact fear, and it wouldn’t take many. One MAGA terrorist with an AR-15 could kill dozens of voters standing in line to vote.

Any sort of shooting outside or even in the vicinity of a polling place is going to disrupt things greatly.
Unless of course there are enough good guys with guns to deal with the bad guys with guns.

i can still kind of remember—i think one of Reagan’s elections—where the national map had California red as he cruised to victory. Probably the second one where he was stuffing Mondale into the electoral locker. Weird to see how demographics has turned what I think for years was a Republican state into a state that would probably cut off an arm before giving a Republican its electoral votes.
Swing state. The state seemed to change parties every time it changed governors.
OFFS, I just received an email from my dermatologist. They’re having a “date night” where you can bring your “special someone and indulge in a little selfcare together”

Danny Masterson, who is currently serving time in California state prison after being convicted of raping two women in 2003, has reportedly been denied bail pending his appeal.According to court records reviewed by USA TODAY, the “That ’70s Show” actor had a bail review hearing at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday morning. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo wrote in her Wednesday order that she deems Masterson to be a flight risk, according to entertainment outlets The Wrap and Deadline, who obtained court documents in the case.
“If defendant’s conviction and sentence are upheld on appeal, he will likely remain in custody for decades and perhaps the rest of his life,” Olmedo wrote in her order, per The Wrap. “In light of the fact that defendant has no wife to go home to, defendant now has every incentive to flee and little reason to return to state prison to serve out the remainder of his lengthy sentence should his appeal be unsuccessful.”

re: #177 No Malarkey!
I suspect that Trump would view a short stint in jail for contempt of court as yet another fund raising opportunity. The judge should fine him instead, which Trump would also use as a fund raising opportunity, but it probably wouldn’t generate the same amount of revenue as jail would.
For the first ten minutes. Then the reality of being in a jail cell would hit. Wouldn’t stop his fund raising, but I expect after the experience he’d be careful to avoid getting locked up again, (I would love the opportunity to test this.)
The problem with critical thinking is that thinking isn’t an automatic response to a situation.

And once one judge locks him up for a day or two I expect others will see that as a viable disciplinary action regarding his disruptive behavior.
That he’ll squawk and grift from it will be expected. And the various talking heads will wring their hands. But it will also set the example that Trump in not untouchable and above consequences for actions that would put anyone else in a cell either.

I make a great effort to understand the viewpoint and background of the other person/s. Doesn’t necessarily mean I a going to agree with it, but it helps in finding a solution to propose that the other side might be more likely to accept.
But that is just my nature, I am more interested in resolving an issue than winning an argument.
The jazz and R&B vocalist Marlena Shaw, whose “California Soul” has become a staple element of ads and hip-hop songs, has died. She was 81.
Shaw’s daughter, Marla Bradshaw, announced the legendary singer’s death in a Facebook video posted Friday.
“It is with a very heavy heart that for myself and my family, I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist, Marlena Shaw, has passed away today at 12:03. She was peaceful; we were at peace,” Bradshaw said in the video.
“I know that you just saw posts of [a] birthday celebration just as soon as yesterday. And my twin sister and I were very grateful, and our family, that she was here in celebration for that. Obviously, I’m not going to go into too many details, but [to] her fans … she is at peace. She is in Heaven. I do know that.”

I guarantee there will be ad spots after he’s dead, offering coins, black-light velvet posters, and every kind of cheap Chinese junk you can think of as tribute to the greatest president of all time, many of them showing him is some faux-religious setting. Peter Navarro sentencing is imminent. Judge Mehta is about to hand down his sentence.
I’m not particularly hopeful of a max sentence here.
re: #223 A hollow voice says: Abort SCOTUS
Swing state. [CA] The state seemed to change parties every time it changed governors.
True: I grew up there (50s-60s-70s), and the partisan makeup was always shifting - and CA was not a “gimme” state for either Party. But the CA GOP ended up digging their own graves, IMHO: they had their mindset firmly fixed in about 1928 for many many decades: and when they finally shifted, it was only to update to about 1968 - again, long after it was politically relevant.
I think the Gray Davis recall (and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s unexpected election) was the Republicans’ last hurrah in the Golden State: Arnold tried to tell them what they doing wrong, but (as they had always done), they ignored him. And are now, to the state’s considerable benefit, a near-irrelevant minority.

I’m a little surprised to see the Republicans turn traitor over a decision from the court they so deeply corrupted, but not a lot surprised. They can’t get along with anyone.
When your grift is that America is suffering an “invasion” that is “destroying the country,” you can’t just shrug your shoulders and give up just because the Court told you to.

So if red states are allowed to ignore SCOTUS and just do their own thing with border policies, how long until blue states do the same and just press forward with COVID vaccination policies, anti-gun policies, and the like? The Calvinball Court - by not hewing to any standard other than, “whatever we say, goes” - has set itself up to become the court that breaks judicial power in America.
Not enough IMHO but better than nothing…

The courts don’t have the ability to enforce laws without the executive branch doing it.

I think it’s more important that Navarro actually got sentenced in the first place, rather than the degree of the punishment. It is important to uphold that the J6 Committee’s subpoenas were legitimate.
