Talking about dogs that hunt. I had a small, gracile Shiba Inu, Hoshi, who was a great hunter.

Hoshi

She would regularly kill moles and bring them to me. She would listen for them running in their tunnel , then leap on the ground, collapsing the tunnel and killing the mole, which she would dig out.

But the big game hunting she did thaty scared the heck out of me happened in the evening. While out in the fenced yard, we heard this screaming like a little child. We went outside and she had cornered some animal I had never seen. The size of a large rabbit, it had round ears like a bear. And huge, nasty incisors that seemed to have horizontal projections on them.

I tried to hold her back because I did not want those teeth to get her. As I tried to use a shovel to move the animal, Hoshi ran around, caught the animal by the neck, flung it in the air and broke its neck. She was very pleased with herself.

Turns out it was a mountain beaver. We get them around here and a few curious golden retrievers in the neighborhood got mauled buy them.

But not my Hoshi. I never worried about her having to del with any of the wildlife that made it into our backyard. She was too good to get caught.

She died 2 years ago. I stll miss her.

OMG I am not going to ask how it got there or why they have it. Just get that &^%$ thing to a bomb disposal unit.

I was involved in an incident like this while I was home on leave from the army in the early 70s. I was outside working on my parents’ lawn. A neighbor had come to visit with my stepmother. They called me into the house. The neighbor explained that she had been going through some of her late husband’s belongings and was wondering if I could identify an object he had brought home from the war. She set a box down on our kitchen table, opened it, and lifted out what appeared to be a 75mm artillery round, complete with casing and fuse. I suppressed a squeal and told her to set it down very gently on a folded towel that happened to be handy. Then I told them to run, not walk, to a house across the street.
We called the fire department. I mentioned that military ordnance was suspected so they also sent the nearby Air Force base’s crash rescue department, of which my father happened to be chief. He arrived first with his big O-11a crash trucks, followed by a small fleet of civilian fire apparatus. He found us huddling with the other neighbors behind a concrete wall at the end of the block. His first words were “OK, what have you done now?” I explained. He sent most of the fire equipment away and helped the cops evacuate the neighborhood. The Air Force explosive ordnance types (eg “bomb squad”) arrived and took the shell away to be blown up with C-4 at their bomb range. They told us later that it had in fact been inert, no explosive, in spite of the live fuse. The ATF investigated and quickly closed the case.

After some fail attempts and some sacrifice of blood to the feline overlady, and some feline curses which would be against LGF ToS to present in translated form here, managed to get her paw free from her tail.
Given advise to keep an eye on the tail, so it doesn’t show signs of infection (warm, swollen, pain), or if she begins to lick it excessively, keeping an eye on the claws on the paw that got stuck that they didn’t get excessively stretched out, to leave her be to calm down, pamper her a bit and if she wants company, give it, and otherwise be in a wait-and-see pattern.
Am I forgetting anything?

“Trump and Mike Johnson zero in on noncitizen voting. It’s already illegal and very rare.”

I’ve said this before: the cost of getting caught voting illegally is so great compared with the benefit that it’s virtually unheard of. Anyone who managed to make it into this country as a non-citizen is much more capable than the average Trump cultist of making a rational, personal cost-benefit calculation.

re: #14 jaunte

THIS.

It’s well documented that the vast majority of immigrants are very hard-working people just looking to provide a better life for themselves and their families.

And they are WELL AWARE they have few inherent rights in the United States. They are not instantly granted the same privileges as people who are born here.

They have to work and earn pretty much everything. They want to prove that they can be productive members of society. They want to reach a place where they can call this country home. This also plays into why they are willing to work jobs Americans won’t.

When you come to a new country, you basically have to start your life over in a lot of ways: Your friends and family do not come with you. Your credit score does not come with you. All the places you have known and appreciate do not come with you.

You have to begin again. From scratch. That’s not an easy thing to do.

And on top of that, for migrants who are not here legally, there’s always the specter of deportation hanging over them. They don’t want to draw attention to themselves, they don’t want to get out of line. They want to work hard and keep a relatively low profile just like the rest of us.

The transition migrants have to go through when they move to a new country is something someone who has never lived outside the United States will ever truly understand.

It’s just too easy for some Americans to sit in their place of privilege and judge others for fighting for things they didn’t have to lift a finger for.

I am an American citizen now, but I am still a hard-working immigrant and always will be. I have busted my butt for everything I’ve gotten in this country and I’m damn proud of it.

Anyone who would judge me and treat me badly simply because I am from somewhere else can fuck right the hell off.

Right-Wing Media Are in Trouble - The Atlantic

Some of the bigger names in the field have been pummeled the hardest: The Daily Caller lost 57 percent of its audience; Drudge Report, the granddaddy of conservative aggregation, was down 81 percent; and The Federalist, founded just over a decade ago, lost a staggering 91 percent. (The site’s CEO and co-founder, Sean Davis, called that figure “laughably inaccurate” in an email but offered no further explanation.) FoxNews.com, by far the most popular conservative-news site, has fared better, losing “only” 22 percent of traffic, which translates to 23 million fewer monthly site visitors compared with four years ago.

There are assessments that a volley of ballistic missiles, which if launched from Iran would take approximately 13 minutes to strike in Israel, may be timed to coincide with the cruise missiles Iran has apparently already launched.

Curious whether the Iranian systems are going to be able to target something considered a legitimate target as compared to simply trying to hit a city and not care whether or not they kill civilians.

You presume correctly - the IRGC have apparently named the attack on Israel as operation “True Promise”, and announced that it’s part of “the punishment for Israel’s crimes.”

Technically it wasn’t the consulate itself that was hit but a nearby building where the senior Quds force and Hezbollah officials were apparently meeting to plan an attack (seeing how the top mofo there was involved with terrorist attacks with thousands of deaths, including Americans, no one here should shed a tear).

Strange issue with IOS 17.4.1 update today. I’d previously updated via wifi a week ago but whenever I plug in the phone or ipad to itunes, it said there was still a 17.4.1 update available. I went ahead and OKed an update on both devices. The phone was first and following the update, it appeared to operate fine. The ipad, not so much. Nearly every non-apple app would start up, show its splash screen, and then crash. Checking several apple websites, it seems that this is a common problem. Ultimately, I found one entry on MacRumors forum that stated it was some problem with icloud and suggested a fix was to logout of icloud, log back in, and restart. I did the icloud logout/in and that seemed to fix the apps problem. Everything that was crashing before now works on start. Although many people complained it happened on their iphone, it didn’t on mine. I hope this is a permanent resolution, not just a temporary patch. Watch and wait.

I’m searching for a response from apple but haven’t found one yet. This is literally the first time I’ve had a problem with apple updates on my phone or ipad.
