Jazz Bassist Linda May Han Oh: Tiny Desk Concert

Music • Views: 13,238

Themes of reflection and resilience are on display the moment bassist Linda May Han Oh begins her opener, “Halo,” a driving tune dedicated to the world of live music producers. The track, accentuated by Greg Ward on alto saxophone and Fabian Almazan’s use of an effects pedal on the piano, calls to mind the grind and hustle of playing and presenting gigs. Performance of thoughtful and complex sounds is at the heart of jazz, and at the heart of Oh’s impact as a composer and musician. Her work with artists like Pat Metheny, Terri Lyne Carrington and Vijay Iyer, plus her projects as a composer and bandleader (including a chamber jazz ensemble and album, Aventurine) have culminated in Oh being an in-demand jazz bassist.

In this Tiny Desk, Oh presents a mix of cuts from her 2023 release, The Glass Hours, and new works. Her theme of resilience is exemplified in “The Imperative,” where drummer Mark Whitfield Jr. and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner shine. “Rise Mountains” is a conversation between the married duo of Oh and Almazan — at times a unified conversation, in others one where each takes a side. To close her set, Oh moves from upright bass to an electric for “Hatchling,” inspired by her and Almazan’s 3-year-old son. This whimsical song, with Oh and Sara Serpa vocalizing, paints a portrait of a tiny human discovering life and exploring a new world.

a summary of what the R supermajority just did to its party in Kentucky, via Rando observation:

Previous Kentucky law required the Governor to pick (in a limited time frame) an interim Senator from a list of 3 names submitted by the political party of the departed Senator.

So now if McConnell or Paul die or otherwise leave office, the Kentucky seat will be vacant for several months (and Senate Republicans will be down one vote for that period).

Well done Republicans!

he left out this part:
- from a list of 3 names submitted by the political party of the departed Senator. ie an R meant an R appointment.

now there will be an election. while the odds are small (the governor himself is a D), the odds now arent zero that a D could win.

I’m sorry, but this jumped out at me from that link:

We’re done with day 1 of Trump’s first criminal trial, and while we’ve got a ways to go, the prospective jurors include a “bookseller,” an oncology nurse, an assistant Bronx County DA, and a woman from Fanduel, the sports betting site

What in the name of malpractice is the defense team thinking allowing a lawyer, let alone an assistant district attorney on the jury panel?

ETA: or have we just not got to the preemptory challenge part of the proceedings?

A hung jury or a dismissal. Just a guess.

27
KGxvi  Apr 15, 2024 • 2:38:47pm

re: #26 PhillyPretzel ✅

A hung jury or a dismissal.

There’s nothing preventing lawyers from being jurors, but typically lawyers don’t like lawyers on the jury. The concern, often, is that the other jurors may defer to that lawyer-juror on important issues because of their expertise. If I were a criminal defense attorney there’s no way that I’d want a district attorney on the panel.

It’s also not the profile of a person you’d want if you’re trying to get a hung jury. They’re probably going to be prone to side with the prosecutors because they are also prosecutors. And, again, a lot of ordinary folks are going to defer to them.

Also not sure how this will lead to a potential dismissal.

My guess is that they just haven’t got to the preemptory challenge portion of the proceedings.

Looks like The Daily Beast isn’t just dying. It’s been a corpse on an expensive ventilator for years.

Ben Sherwood and Joanna Coles to Take Over Daily Beast, Given Minority Stake

The Daily Beast owner Barry Diller has given former ABC executive Ben Sherwood and former Hearst executive Joanna Coles a minority stake in the struggling news site as his latest attempt to reverse its declining fortunes.

They will step into executive roles with Sherwood as CEO and Coles serving as chief content and creative officer, effective immediately.

The Daily Beast has been without a CEO since November 2023 when Heather Dietrick departed.

Sherwood, the former president of Disney ABC Television Group, and Coles, the former chief content officer of Hearst Magazines were granted an equity stake of around half of the publication, with IAC maintaining the majority stake, according to the New York Times.

IAC did not provide details on the financial terms of the deal.

Since its creation in 2013, The Daily Beast has lost Diller tens of millions of dollars, and the site has been known to be for sale. In its early days the site was reported to have lost an average of $12 million a year, something that knowledgeable insiders have said hasn’t changed in the decade-plus that’s followed.

Very sad, especially those who believe that somehow it’s a free speech platform, when it deliberately prevented others from joining. Of course, X is not traded publicly so there’s no way one of these “investors” could purchase any shares of a functioning Truth Social platform.

The Supreme Court effectively abolishes the right to mass protest in three US states

Because of the crazy 5th District, anyone organizing any protest in Texas, Louisiana or Mississippi is responsible personally for any crime committed. And the Court let that stand.

This goes directly against the Court’s own precedents. Time used to be that the Court woul knock down ANY district court that went outside its purview and made up new law. Not now.

So the Tesla layoff thing: I do wonder if this is a positive move, a sign that the US EV market must adjust to the realities of say the Chinese EV market.

Tesla is by design a luxury brand.

EVs, if they are to be a thing, have to be available, if not for the poor then at least to the typical American two-earner household.

On the other hand, this could be the early days of a BIG RECKONING for the entire US economy and the efforts (of at least some) to move away from petroleum and the ICE.

I am not encouraged for Biden’s re-election. I still suspect that the abortion-backlash will keep Biden in office. But whoever is the next Dem up to bat (in 2028) could be overwhelmed by nationalism due to world crises over energy and the resulting conflicts.

Not now.

Fuck. One of those is my state.

Too bad it doesn’t apply to instigating an insurrection in D.C.

Now I’m curious if Trump went to any of his other kids’ graduations.

Offs if it was a swim meet he’d be using that as the excuse

re: #27 KGxvi

In my experience, an entire jury is seated and questioned by both sides before the peremptory challenges begin.

“Barron, your dad can’t be there because he’s in a criminal trial where he might finally be held accountable for just some of his criminal acts.”

The graduation is on a Thursday, which would lead me to believe it will be held in the evening. Can’t find an actual time, but that would be my guess, so he more than likely could attend if it was sooooooo important to him
