Friday, September 2: Victory over Japan in World War 2 Day.
Monday, September 5: Labor Day (Federal Holiday, first Monday of September)
Sunday, September 11: Half-mast all day, Patriot Day (marks the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Shanksville, Penna.)
NOTE: Patriot Day (Observed) is Monday, September 12, as the official holiday falls on Sunday.
Friday, September 16: National POW/MIA Recognition Day (third Friday of September). The POW/MIA flag is always permitted to fly from government buildings and grounds.
Saturday, September 17: Constitution Day (marks the day the Confederation Congress adopted the US Constitution in 1787, sending it to the states for ratification).
Sunday, September 25: Gold Star Mothers’ and Families’ Day (last Sunday of September, honours parents, children, and siblings who lost a family member in combat while in the US Armed Forces). The Gold Star Family flag may be flown on all government buildings and grounds on this day.
For flags which cannot be lowered to half-mast, such as those on a staff in an office or church, or on a gaff such as a porch or boat, the American Legion recommends affixing a black ribbon the length of the flag and the width of one stripe. For those displayed flat, they recommend placing a black bow in the centre of the flag or three black bows across the top of the flag.
