As a vet, I’ll simply say this - the flag is nothing but a piece of cloth. I appreciate it. I have taken many photos of it. Often it stirs me.

BUT:

It is _not_ the freedoms I swore to defend. When people started conflating the flag with freedom, the battle was already half lost.

Which is one of many reasons I want the Pledge to go away.
