Tiny Minority of Extremists

Tue, Mar 30, 2004 at 8:26:30 am PST

Students at Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, the most prestigious school in the Islamic world, show their love and support for an evil mass-murdering terrorist, and scream for revenge.

Students carry posters of Hamas founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin, Tuesday, March 30, 2004, during a protest in the Islamic al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt calling for revenge for his assassination. ‘A crippled sheikh has awakened the nation, when will we act?’ the poster reads. The students also protested the last minute postponement of the Arab summit which was due to begin Monday in Tunisia. (AP Photo/Mohamad Al-Sehety)

Did anyone see that PBS program "The New Immigrants" last night?

Steve James of "Hoop Dreams" directed the documentary, which focuses in part on a female Palestinian immigrant to the US. During the time before he marriage and move to the US, the doucmentary followed her arround on her "typical school day" where she had to take 3 to 4 bus rides to get to "University" (which looked more like a maddrassah) in Jerusalem.

"Cry me an effin' river," I said out loud. "Maybe if your people didn't try to blow people up every day it woun't be so damn difficult!"

Interestingly though, they never explained why, as 90% of the women in the class were wearing hijab, she wasn't wearing a headscarf. At all. Ever. (Granted, the male instructor of the class seemed barely able to contain his disdain.)

Very strange.

From the hypocrisy files:

Senate Dems to Block All Nominations

WASHINGTON — All White House nominees will be blocked. That's right: every single one.

That's the word from Sen. Charles Schumer's office, which released a statement on Friday saying that Senate Democrats plan "to hold nominations until the White House commits to stop abusing the advise and consent process."

Schumer's release followed a statement by Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., on the Senate floor Friday, in which he vowed to make life difficult for the president's nominees as long as Bush keeps using his recess appointment power to install the ones Democrats oppose.

His constitutionally authorized recess appointment power.

This from the same people abusing the filibuster, and blocking up-or-down votes.

Remember stuff like this the next time you hear dhimmicrats whining about the Constitution.

They hate it, and only abide by it when it suits their purposes. The rest of the time, they ignore and manipulate it.

OT - Chicago, L.A. towers were next targets

LONDON — Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, al Qaeda's purported operations chief, has told U.S. interrogators that the group had been planning attacks on the Library Tower in Los Angeles and the Sears Tower in Chicago on the heels of the September 11, 2001, terror strikes.

Those plans were aborted mainly because of the decisive U.S. response to the New York and Washington attacks, which disrupted the terrorist organization's plans so thoroughly that it could not proceed, according to transcripts of his conversations with interrogators.

This can't be true. The WoT is a failed policy, according to Ketchup Stud.

Here's some ideas on what we could do with the $2 billion dollars we have been giving Egypt every year (that's ten percent of our entire foreign aid budget, boys and girls):

1. Allocate the entire amount to building civic and democratic institutions in Iraq, especially secular schools and universities.

2. Give tax breaks to companies that invest in countries who actually support US interests in the region (Israel).

3. The Saddam Option - use it to bribe $2 billion dollars worth of Egyptian officials and military officers, giving us de facto control of the country.

4. Use it to fund a regional Alliance of Democratic Nations, loosely modeled on NATO. (Eventually, defund the UN and spend our money here, instead).

5. Buy every poor slob in Arkansas a Monster Truck. Better than what we spend it on now.

How Egypt will benefit from our "tough love":

1. End US subsidy of their Marxist-primitivist, state-controlled "economy", encouraging rational economics.

2. End US subsidy of their Marxist-primitivist "military", which is good for nothing but IDF target practice anyway.

3. Liberate Egypt from US-Zionist "neo-colonialism" disguised as foreign aid! Everybody wins!

Joel 3:9-17
9 Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare a war; rouse the mighty men! Let all the soldiers draw near, let them come up! 10 Beat your plowshares into swords And your pruning hooks into spears; Let the weak say, "I am a mighty man."
35 DB  Tue, Mar 30, 2004 7:19:28am

#25 brianstien,
Those plans were aborted mainly because of the decisive U.S. response to the New York and Washington attacks, which disrupted the terrorist organization's plans so thoroughly that it could not proceed, according to transcripts of his conversations with interrogators.

It seems more likely that their change in plans is a direct result of the West's continuing diplomatic efforts in the region. Clinton was really beginning to talk a lot more forcefully and effectively to these people; the militants were just about to give up on all their freedom fighting until GWB came in and screwed everything up.

This is very similar to the way Libya finally gave in to our tough, exhaustive and persistent diplomacy, even though they were very angry about our immoral aggression in Iraq.

Muslim girls and women in France do not have a snowball's shot in hell thanks to Islam and no thanks to the French government. There is no such thing as a non-traditional Muslim family in France, again thanks to the bang up job the government has done assimilating Muslims.

Racist in the sense that one group has made it their avowed raison d'etre to push another group into the sea? Or racist in the sense that hate of one group (for no other reason than they are in that other group) is fully indoctrinated from infancy? Oh, I know! It's that OTHER racism where the government of one group actually sponsors rallies, where violence against the other group is born.

I know you CAN'T be talking about the racism of state sponsored terror where one group is tired of having its citizens blown up and shot by the other group, so the leader of the first group takes decisive action.

My ten-year old granddaughter saw this photo today on my p.c. while she was watching over my shoulder. She asked me if the women were “nuns”. I told her they were Muslim “holy ladies”. (I’m so bad that sometimes I can’t even stand myself.) My granddaughter was born in Honduras and has only been in America for about five years. She doesn’t have a real grasp about many religions, and doesn’t really practice any. Then she asked me if the pictures they were carrying were of G_d. I told her “no”, but that the people holding those pictures do get all confused about that. Then she said to me that if it was G_d, he looked an awful lot like the “bad guy” in the Lord of the Rings movies. Before she went back to her games and snacks, she told me (once again) that she was so glad she was in America now and didn’t have to do anything that makes you wear funny clothes and do stupid stuff. I just let it all go and said to myself, “Hooray for you Jenny; from a ten-year old comes simple wisdom”.

VIENNA, March 30 (Reuters) - Leading OPEC producer Saudi Arabia on Tuesday faced opposition from its two main Gulf allies in the oil cartel for plans to forge ahead with April supply curbs.

Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi made a strong case ahead of Wednesday's meeting of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to carry out supply cuts, agreed in February for implementation from April 1.

But he faces an unexpectedly robust challenge from the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, fellow Gulf Arab producers who normally share Riyadh's line on oil policy.

Kuwaiti Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahd al-Sabah said on his departure for Vienna that he backed a UAE proposal for postponing the April cuts.

Analysts said the rare split across OPEC's core Gulf Arab membership suggests the United States, having failed to budge Saudi, now is focusing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing lower prices on Kuwait and the UAE.

"The UAE and Kuwait are the guys that the U.S. can count on now," said Roger Diwan of Washington consultancy PFC Energy. .....

Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi said it is unfair to generalize, arguing that there had been only isolated attempts to recruit youngsters. She said Palestinian society, which has supported suicide bombings to a large degree, would have to do some soul-searching, but that the causes of despair - Israel's occupation and military strikes - must not be overlooked.

Only isolated attempts? Well, gee that's all right then. And notice that without the word "but," the LLL and the PPP would be completely unable to say "terrorism is wrong."

DETROIT (Reuters) - Security officials aided by sniffer dogs swept through three U.S. passenger jets on Tuesday after they were targeted by bomb threats, authorities said.
The aircraft, all operated by Northwest Airlines, included one that arrived at Detroit's Metropolitan Airport on Tuesday morning on a flight from Miami, spokesmen for Northwest and the Transportation Security Administration, told Reuters.

The plane in Detroit was still being searched about two hours after it landed, according to TSA spokeswoman Yolanda Clark, who added that no explosive device had been found aboard the aircraft.

"So far these threats have not turned out to be credible," Clark told Reuters. She said she was unaware of the source of the bomb threats but added that authorities were "taking every precaution available."

The second and third flights, from Memphis to Miami and Los Angeles to Detroit, were stopped before takeoff and were being searched by Northwest and federal officials, Northwest said in a statement.

Government spin-doctors, academics, corporations and the media tell us that capitalism works, that Iraq is better off after the war, and that Britain is a democracy. Yet the experience of millions of people contradicts this.

They don’t see how a system that leaves 1 billion people living on less than a $1 a day is working. They don’t see how, with over 25,000 dead, more dying every day, and no democracy, the Iraq war was a success.
They don’t understand how Britain can be democratic when time after time the government ignores the wishes of the people.
That’s why millions across Britain and the world have resisted. They have protested, demonstrated and gone on strike.
They have also gathered together to talk about what’s happening in the world, debate the best strategies for resistance, the experience and lessons of past struggles, and crucially what the alternative is.
Marxism 2004 will see these debates and discussions continue. It brings together from across Britain and the world activists from many unions and social movements, speakers, writers and campaigners. Over the course of the event they will take part in over 250 separate meetings, forums, debates, discussions and cultural events.
Why not come along, ask questions, seek answers, and meet other activists?

Jenny is my “stolen” granddaughter. She is the daughter of my son’s second wife. I often tell her that she is the only grandchild I have that took 15, rather than the usual 9, months to get. Her mother came here as an illegal alien, caught my son’s eye (he’s very discriminating about women) and have been married for more than seven years. Now, my daughter-in-law has a good job, is working on a degree from the local community college, serious about applying for U.S. citizenship, and cooks delicious food that I can’t even pronounce. She and Jenny will make a visit this summer to Honduras to see family. Jenny confided to me recently that she is very afraid that something bad might happen while she’s there and she won’t be allowed to come back to America. All I can do is be supportive and assure her that no matter what happens, Grandma will get her back! It is so eye-opening and enlightening for me to be close to a little kid who has such a feel for the world as it really is and knows that what we have here is the best it gets. G_d bless America!

Interesting blurb today:

**Sunday Could Become a Day Off in Israel

Likud MK, Leah Ness, is proposing a new bill aimed to shorten the Israeli
workweek from 5.5 to 4.5 days by making Sunday a day off, MAARIV reported. The
bill recommends barring the opening of shops and companies on Saturdays, turning
Sunday into a day of shopping and entertainment. "In reality, the 1951 Work and
Rest Hours Law, which prohibits work on Saturdays, is non-existent, so that
Saturday, which was supposed to be the day of rest, turned into the day of
shopping", Ness said. "This law can significantly improve the quality of life
for all of us". If turned into a law, the legislation will convert the workweek
to four nine-hour days (Monday-Thursday). Friday, which for many Israelis is a
day off, will become a 5-hour workday with Sundays off. The school system will
also adopt the 5-day schedule with longer school days. MK Nahum Langental of the
National Religious Party proposed a similar plan in the last Knesset.
--------------------------------------------------
So, despite what has been going on, Israelis continue to try to figure out how to improve and enjoy life better. Contrast that with the Paleonazis death cult of destruction.

Almost noone dares to make a link between the statements issued at Al Azhar and the true face of Islam. Eventhough it is considered by all as the most prominent religious authority within the islamic world.

Failures of socialist land reform By 1990, most socialist systems had abandoned collectives and state farms. China made major revisions in 1978 and afterwards. The conclusion in general is that the 60 experiment with socialist reform (expropriation-colectivization-central management) had failed. Evidence of failure 1. Russian famine 1929-1933: 5-7 million deaths directly attributed to loss of food producing capacity. Many more deaths were caused by government repression 2. Chinese famine, 1958-59: 30 million deaths attributed to bureaucratic mismanagement and failure to acknowledge problems with collectivization. 3. Stagnation of agriculture in collective and state owned farms (ejidos, Soviet farms) in comparision to privately own and managed farms.

The only succesful collective farms of the 20th century were Israeli Kibbutz. You do support those right?

I found the list provided in post #75 a very handy summary to present to people who, from ignorance of any opposing view, continue to support and enable the death cults that plague the modern world. I've bookmarked it for future use.

Reading Tilli's story and reactions to the events of 9/11 , and then viewing the other side-- Palestinian's dancing in the street to celebrate the mass murder of American's in the same manner they celebrate the mass murder of Jews provides an excellent summary of the two basic views and positions- support or opposition - regarding psychotic hatred and mass murder.

For those interested in understanding the history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, but who so far only understand the view of terrorists and their various supporters and enablers, "Myths and Facts" is an excellent resource.

Yet the experience of millions of people contradicts this.

These abysmal spelling errors are the result of the feel-good, self-esteem, no-answer-is-wrong philosophy being promulgated in a number of public school systems across the nation. I am not a full-time teacher, although I sub at least thrice weekly in Leonia, NJ, where some of this is practiced, albeit not to a large extent.
Over the years (I did a lot of subbing in the 80s) I have seen teaching and learning become sub-ordinated to sloganeering -- all sorts of warmfuzzy platitudes on glossy posters all over the walls inside calssrooms and hallways. It is as if basic principles are no longer taught in today's public school, and the message will be absorbed through osmosis. Kind of scary, IMHO.

One day, Germany will have had enough
By Mark Steyn
(Filed: 30/03/2004)

In the old days, the headline "Germans Go On Offensive" would have caused palpitations among Czechs, Poles, Belgians, etc. But, in the case of this weekend's AP headline, Germans going on the offensive refers not to sending German troops to foreign countries, but keeping foreign troops in Germany. And it's the Germans having the palpitations, after press reports that the Pentagon plans to pull out half its troops.

Right now, Germany plays host to 175,000 Americans - military personnel plus their families - and reducing that number to 80-90,000 would leave a big hole in an economy that's already looking like a Swiss cheese. See the recent story in Bild: "Can't We Do Anything Any More in Germany?" Also the cover of Der Spiegel: "Germany: A Joke."

The joke keeps getting better. Karl Peter Bruch, a state official in Rhineland-Palatinate who's lobbying the Americans to change their minds, put it this way: "We realised that our installations are in grave danger. And then came the question, what can we do to make us more attractive?"

"Our" installations? As Daffy Duck famously remarked after losing yet another verbal duel with Bugs Bunny and getting his bill shot off: "Hmm. Pronoun trouble." As to what Germany can do to make itself more attractive to the Yanks, how about this? Spend less time running around playing Mini-Me to Jacques Chirac's Doctor Evil. Just a thought. And it seems to have occurred, somewhat belatedly, to Gerhard Schröder.

Last March, there were plenty of takers for it. My Spectator colleague Matthew Parris indulged himself in one of his elegant scoffs about the Bush doctrine: "We should ask whether America does have the armies, the weaponry, the funds, the economic clout and the democratic staying power to carry all before her in the century ahead. How many wars on how many fronts could she sustain at once? How much fighting can she fund? How much does she need to export? Is she really unchallenged by any other economic bloc?"

My confrère was falling prey to theories of "imperial overstretch". But, as I wrote at the time in an article on "the death of Europe", "if you're not imperial, it's quite difficult to get overstretched. By comparison with 19th-century empires, the Americans travel light."

America's main "overstretch" lies not in Afghanistan or the Horn of Africa, but in its historically unprecedented generosity to its wealthiest allies. "The US picks up the defence tab for Europe, Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia, among others," I wrote. "If Bush wins a second term, the boys will be coming home from South Korea and Germany, and maybe Japan, too."

Well, the second term is not quite here. But America has already quit Saudi Arabia, and plans for South Korea and Germany are well advanced. When scholars come to write the final chapter in the history of the European continent, the six-decade US security guarantee will be seen as, on the whole, a mistake. Not for America, but the Continentals.

The so-called "free world" was, for most of its members, a free ride. Absolving wealthy nations of the need to maintain credible armies softens them: they decay, almost inevitably, into a semi-non-aligned status.

Even now, the likes of Mr Bruch see the US military presence in Europe in mainly economic terms - all those German supermarkets and German restaurants that depend on American custom. But, looked at in defence terms, if Don Rumsfeld wants a light, mobile 21st-century military, the last place to base it is the Continent: given that the term "ally" is now generally used in the post-modern meaning of "duplicitous obstructionist", it's not unlikely that any future Saddamesque scenario would see attempts to throw operational restraints around the use of US forces in Europe.

This weekend, for example, nearly 60 per cent of French electors voted Socialist, Communist, Fascist or Green. Most of the rest voted for the "ruling centre-Right" - ie, Chirac. Does that sound like an "ally" that's ever again likely to grant overflight rights to the USAF? Better a nice clean flight plan direct from Missouri or Diego Garcia.

What happens when a country becomes just as militant and aggressive about the virtues of "soft power" as it once was about old-fashioned hard power? Germany has a shrinking economy, an ageing and shrivelling population, and potentially catastrophic welfare liabilities. Yet the average German worker now puts in over 20 per cent fewer hours per year than his American counterpart, and no politician who wishes to remain electorally viable would propose closing the gap.

Germany, like much of Europe, has a psychological investment in longer holidays, free healthcare, early retirement, unsustainable welfare programmes, decrepit military: the fact that these policies spell national suicide is less important than that they distinguish Europe from the less enlightened Americans.

Where did all the money go? In a recent speech in Washington, the Oxford historian Niall Ferguson recalled German objections 80 years ago to their First World War reparations bill of $132 billion - why, such a sum would bankrupt the country!

Ferguson pointed out that Germany has paid $132 billion and then some to France, Belgium, Italy and co in net EU contributions. And, as predicted, bankruptcy looms. From Belgian steel to Italian agriculture to French colonial subventions, the entire European project has been financed by Germany.

Even a rare fellow contributor such as Britain owes its brief romance with the Common Market to German success: in stagnant pre-Thatcher Britain, the business community looked enviously across the Channel and figured that yoking the British economy to Europe would cut 'em a little piece of that rich German stollen.

But there's no stollen left to steal: Germany is the sick man of Europe, and too risk-averse to try any cure other than sugary placebos such as the dismal "Year of Innovation" Mr Schröder has declared 2004 to be. He has appointed an Innovation Council. The first sign of a genuinely innovative culture is that it's too busy innovating to have an Innovation Council. An Innovation Council is just more of the same-old same-old.

The Germans get 11 per cent of the votes in the Council of Ministers and pony up 67 per cent of the EU's net contributions. And sooner or later, they'll figure out that pandering to a pampered populace at home is one thing, subsidising it Continent-wide is quite another. Then they really will go on the offensive.

If you want to debate with us, you need to have an IQ over 90. You also must have some access to the facts. Quite clearly, the apartheid exercised in South Africa has little to do with the clash of civilizations in Israel. In South Africa, a white minority subjugated the black majority on the basis of race. In Israel, they are simply trying to survive the onslaught of islamofascists bombing their children and grandmothers. Quite a difference, don’t you think?

My advice is this, shut up until you know what you are talking about...

Over the years (I did a lot of subbing in the 80s) I have seen teaching and learning become sub-ordinated to sloganeering -

If one tried to design a school system intended to produce children who could not read or write, it would be hard to come up with a system as effective in producing uneducated children as the current public schools.
IMHO

Invented spelling is part of the whole language movement:

[Link: www.ericzorn.com...]

ZORN HOME

"Children should be encouraged to use invented spelling in their writing activities. Invented spelling does not conflict with teaching correct spelling, but can actually be helpful for developing understand of the sounds that different combinations of letters create."
From a March, 1988 report of The National Research Council,  the principal operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering

[Link: www.coe.missouri.edu...]

What is invented spelling?Invented spelling is the term currently used to describe the spellings that learners  produce as they come to understand how written language and its spelling system work.  Children learning to write in any alphabetic language will invent spellings. Many  educators believe "invented spelling" is a more accurate term than "misspelling" since  it recognizes that such spellings are not random but are based on the learner's knowledge  of language. For instance, a young child who writes LIX for "likes" is relating the sounds she hears to the names of letters that she knows. When an older child writes  MATHYOU for the name "Matthew," it shows a knowledge that whole words can be combined  to create new ones. There is a good deal of research that shows how logical children's spellings are.
Is invented spelling a good idea?
Many teachers have begun encouraging children to use invented spelling as they write,  particularly for beginning writers and students who are fearful about writing, and  for first draft writing. Invented spelling lets children get their ideas down on  paper independently, using all the words in their speaking vocabulary, without having to  ask an adult how to spell every unfamiliar word.

The only succesful collective farms of the 20th century were Israeli Kibbutz.

Unfortunately the kibbutz movement did not stand the test of time. Privatization is going ahead full steam and there is hardly any real kibbutzim left in Israel. The ones that haven't sold off their land and factories rely on the income of members who work outside the kibbutz in the real world. Most are already small villages and kibbutzim in name only. The kibbutz was a wonderful invention for the early pioneers but now they're just a dying anachronism. I suppose it was successful in its time because it was a voluntary collectivization, as opposed to the Soviet kolkhoz which was forced on Russian peasants from above, a la Marx.

Why do people troll? How much pleasure can any one get from that? I mean, I've gone swimming in some of the LLL pools, with the incredibly naive idea that perhaps reason, logic and my famous sense of humor could bring some of them around, but alas to no avail. Of course, I didn't troll; I stuck around trying to debate issues, post a few facts (did ya'll know that LLL sites, for the most part, don't want to be encumbered with FACTS?!!) and all I got for my efforts was an ear infection. 1 billion living on under $1 a day? More like 250 million.

No, it's possible. My sister has two kids, ages 2 and 4, and my brother has two kids aged 3 and 4. So, there's four people earning considerably less than $1 a day. Also, my brother's wife doesn't work, so she's earning less than a dollar a day. So, by playing games with statistics, I can demonstrate that more than half the people in my immediate family are struggling by on less than a dollar a day.

Thom, I use Opera and love it. There is no more satisfying browser to use day-to-day, it gives me an amazing degree of control over all kinds of things. You should give it a try, fool around with it and kick its tires. Opera owns. There's a new version coming out soon, 7.50-you can grab the release candidate, it's already much better than 7.23, the present release version (which itself is way better than any other browser I've used).
A close second is Firefox. It's also fun to use, but not as polished as Opera.

Egypt in Perspective

What would you call a country with no external enemies, no border disputes, and no alliances that require military support and no peacekeeping obligations?

Lucky? Costa Rica? Egypt.

Which makes the increasing evidence of Libyan-Egyptian nuclear cooperation – and the Administration's lack of evident concern – most distressing. According to Middle East News Line (MENL), Libya was both the source for and the recipient of nuclear and missile technology and expertise from Egypt. MENL reports that inspection officials "said Egypt appeared to have been using Libya as a way-station for obtaining nuclear and missile technology and components from North Korea," and the IAEA is still trying to determine whether Egypt received Pakistani nuclear weapons designs, including those for nuclear warheads. U.S.
officials have reported that Libya, with help from North Korea, had developed and produced an extended-range Scud C missile with an 800 km range. The U.S. now has possession of them, but according to MENL, Washington also has evidence that the Scud C technology was relayed to Egypt.

The Egyptian dictator Mubarak is scheduled to meet with President Bush in April, but U.S. officials said they doubt the alleged Egyptian-Libyan missile and nuclear cooperation will be raised. We doubt it as well, but we propose that it be added to the list of items that SHOULD be on the agenda, including:
· Missile technology Egypt acquired from North Korea, including the 24
No-Dong missiles Egypt reportedly acquired in 2002.
· Egyptian development of the 1,200-mile range, liquid fueled missile
known as Vector.
· Egyptian assistance to Libya for developing a 1,000+ km missile based
on No-Dong technology.

Mubarak gets huffy when questioned about Egypt's military intentions, claiming the right to decide for himself what form Egyptian "defense"
should take. But since the U.S. has spent BILLIONS transforming Egypt from a Russian-based to an American-based military, including M1A1 tanks with depleted uranium rounds, F-16 jet fighters, MLRS, Harpoon Block II missiles, air-defense radars and more, we have some right to ask.

Right, hell. We have an obligation to ask why a poor, dictatorial, hostile country with a government maintained by force of arms over an oppressed and restless population is building an offensive force including missiles that have no evident target except Israel. The fact that it sits in a crucial geographic location is not good enough.

Egypt has not helped constrain Palestinian violence against Israel or policed the Gaza- Egypt border. It is not an ally in the war against terrorists and the states that harbor and support them. It is not a participant in the Middle East Democracy Initiative. At best it is quietly belligerent toward all three American objectives – which isn't good enough either.

And in the no sh*t category:

More Evidence: PA Officials Direct & Fund Terrorism

Terrorist multi-tasking in Shechem: A senior Fatah terrorist commander, who was simultaneously serving as an officer in the Palestinian Authority's uniformed militia, admitted this month that his activities were directed and guided by PA officials. At the same time, the Fatah terrorist told investigators, he was carrying out activities in coordination with the Lebanese terrorist group, Hizbullah. IDF censors released the information for publication yesterday (Monday). Fatah faction is headed by PLO and PA leader Yasser Arafat.

This should be interesting to see the media spin this:

"A senior militant commander admitted this month that his actions were directed by Fatah. The Fatah faction was once headed by Yassir Arafat but due to Israeli activity the former head of Fata, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and co-signer (sp) of the Oslo Peace Accords, has not been engaging in activities with the Fatah organization."

I don't want to abuse bandwidth, but I do love the cut and paste scary jihadi writing.

Like bungee jumping but different.

(I've never bungee jumped. My wife has mentioned trying to get on "The Amazing Race" (although I think there is a conspiracy every season to make sure the gay team makes it to the final 3), but the bungee jumping would ensure I'd have to take the slow way around and be eliminated.

Would be nice though to show up on the CBS Early Show the morning after the episode showing our elimination aired.

Iraqi Police Academy (not funny) [Link: apnews.excite.com...]

NAJAF, Iraq (AP) - Iraqis, protesting delays in processing their applications for police jobs, hurled stones at Spanish soldiers and Iraqi police on Tuesday in the southern city of Najaf. Witnesses reported gunfire, and at least three police and two protesters were wounded.

Fifteen people were detained in the three-hour confrontation.

The protest began when about 400 people gathered outside a government building to demonstrate against a delay in processing their job applications. They began throwing stones, smashing windows and burning a guardhouse, witnesses said.

Spanish troops, who are responsible for security in the area, arrived later to restore order.

One witness, 22-year-old Falah Hadi, said he saw a stone strike a female Spanish soldier on the head. The soldier staggered, and then fired one round at the crowd, Hadi said.

These are police job applicants! You can't make this stuff up. Imagine what the criminals are like.

This sort of thing is extremely troubling. I saw the President address the nation--and I guess the world--on CNN earlier today. He spoke of "gathering clouds" (or similar).

I suppose we really are headed into another global war. I just don't know. I guss the position of the US is to fall back on the strategic arsenal. Canada is so deluded right now that 75% of people still believe that "freedom is free".

It was not always that way in our fair land. We brought serious force to bear during WWII. Many Canadians still have memories of what their grandfathers were forced to do. The problem is that the left has almost totally usurped this nation. The CBC is a clone of the BBC. Both are propaganda outlets for the "progressives". The problem is that the progressives will be the first to be imprisoned or executed if the Islamists really do gain the upper hand.

358 Jim in Virginia  Tue, Mar 30, 2004 12:32:31pm

OK, a semi- serious rant:

Bush responsible for high oil prices
Kerry says the government should stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), and that "no young American in uniform ought to ever be held hostage to America's dependence on oil from the Middle East." (I’m buying Exxon stock- he must plan a massive drilling program off the Florida, New Jersey and California coasts and in ANWR along with a lot of nuclear power plant construction.)
Lately, the Bush administration has very quietly been filling the SPR. Several folks here have considered this as a “just in case” policy- if our oil supplies are cut off (coup in Saudi, invasion of Saudi, lots of other nasty possibilities I don’t want to think about.)
This should normally generate a lot of grandstanding, but there’s been little if any public discussion. Maybe my tinfoil is too tight, but so little noise reminds me of the dog that didn’t bark- those who know about it, also know we don’t want to discuss it.
That Kerry brings this up proves what a demagogue he is: Never put national security above scoring cheap political points, especially if you know the administration can’t or won’t respond.

Bush responsible for high oil prices

The thing that is completely asinine about Kerry harping on gas prices is that Bush is supposed to be Big Oil's puppet, so why in G-d's name are they "jacking up" gas prices in an election year??? Don't they want to keep their "boy" in office? And don't the Dems want to raise gas prices so people will drive less? Phony election-year grandstanding indeed.

True enough but the goal is to give the Palestinians their own state, not to make them Israeli citizens. As things stand, you're correct, they're not citizens of any country (except maybe Jordan), and that includes Israel. Under apartheid South African citizens were oppressed by South African citizens -- white citizens (the government) oppressed black citizens. People who compare Israel to apartheid South Africa are either ignorant, anti-Semitic, or both.

What is it with British humour and cross-dressing, though? Maybe Colt can tell me why the British think that men in dresses is so hilarious. I've never gotten that.

We did here, too. At least as late as the '50's anyway; did you ever see Some Like It Hot. I didn't think it was quite as hilarious as the critics make it out to be (voted Best Comedy of All Time, or something), but still pretty funny. Must be a generational thing. I think Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were better in The Great Race, but that's just me. (Push the button, Max!)

BTW, glad to know you're a Python!

Not sure. This is a very quirky place :-)

I always preferred the Meaning of Life, myself:

Maria the cleaning woman: I used to work in the Académie Française / but it didn't do me any good at all. / And I once worked in the library in the Prado in Madrid / But it didn't teach me nothing I recall. / And the Library of Congress you would have thought would hold some key / but it didn't and neither did the Bodlean Library. / In The British Museum I hoped to find some clue / I worked there from nine till six / Read every volume through / But it didn't teach me nothing about life's mystery. / I just kept getting older, it got more difficult to see. / Till eventually me eyes went and me arthritis got bad. / So now I'm cleaning up in here but I can't be really sad. / Cause you see I feel that life's a game. / You sometimes win or lose. / And though I may be down right now at least I don't work for Jews.

I always crack up at the end of that bit :-)

True enough but the goal is to give the Palestinians their own state, not to make them Israeli citizens.

I think we agree on everything but this. Even assuming the Palis ever showed the slightest inclination to accept a two-state solution (as opposed to genocide, for which enthusiasm seems to run high), if I were an Israeli I don't think I'd want to see another terror state on my doorstep. Beyond isolating them (the fence and Gaza evacuation are a beginning), and letting them settle their own scores, I have no interest in seeing the U.N. or Eurabia step in to help jihadis create a state. Unfeelingly, I say let them go back to Jordan and Egypt. Sorry.

Yep, I'm pretty familiar with which nationality originated where. But while we're talking legalisms, international law says you get to keep the land you captured in a defensive war. I've never been for retreating to the Green Line or anything close. Undiplomatic and impolitc (not to say impractical) as it may sound, I say annex the West Bank, compensate the Palis, and send them packing.

No, we don't disagree on that, I was talking hypothetically, although if Bush/UN/EU has their way it's certain to become a reality. Long gone are the days when I cared one way or another about the Palestinians. If by some miracle they decided to stop being murdering zombies and chose instead to mind their own and live productive lives, I wouldn't be opposed to them having their own state. Since, as you note, their enthusiasm for genocide continues unabated, they can go live in Europe for all I care.

In an aggressive war, you cannot annex the land without annexing the people (although there are many historical precedents that say killing them all works just as well). That is the only real difference between defensive and offensive war for annexing land. So of course I agree with you, Israel could have (and should have) annexed Judea, Samaria, Gaza, Sinai and Golan, and kicked out the Arabs living there. Or maybe killed them all...

Today, except for the citizenship of the Arabs in Judea and Samaria, the point is moot anyway, as Jordan does not claim Judea and Samaria any more. Note, though, that granted citizenship cannot be un-granted because loss of land is acknowledged in a peace treaty. So those Arabs are still Jordanians today. Mutatis mutandis, the same is true for Arabs in Gaza.

A U.S. Navy carrier battle group was designed to go up against anything the USSR could do. At sea, they are always ready for trouble . Nothing and I mean nothing gets within 200 miles without approval. A couple of Libyan fighters and a Iranian airliner found out the hard way what happens when you approach a U.S. Navy ship without approval.

Don’t worry about them.

You can be sure that those subs will be first on our list, if we have to fight them.

During peace time? Good question. In the past we have used fairly rough tactics to keep Russian subs away from the carriers, not sure if we would do the same with the Chinese.

Re: Monty Python

This female thinks that sometimes--as is probably inevitable with something that's daring and original--Monty Python's stuff just doesn't work, but when they're good they're unsurpassed. I loved Life of Brian and I loved the Holy Grail. As for their sketches, Dead Parrot, Spam, Lumberjack, Spanish Inquisition, and Argument are hysterical. I went to an all-girls high school when Monty Python was on, and most of my friends were fans. Both my daughters love Monty Python, including their songs.

So I don't think the gender gap is particularly big.

The right tactics with a diesel is to wait in the path of the carrier. And diesel subs are totally silent when stopped. Not to mention that the Formose strait is shallow, and our nuclear submarines are really meant for deep oceans.

On the whole I think those new Kilos, with the French-designed MGK-400EM and command systems, are bad news. Luckily Iran only got 877s with the older MGK-400.

At the risk of prolonging this forensic exercise, I can only say that I don't know what "aggressive war" has to do with the point I raised that land captured in a defensive war belongs to the conqueror. The blockade of the Straits of Tiran in '67 was an act of war by Egypt
under international law. Ergo, Israel fought a defensive war. So, apparently we agree that Israel could have annexed the West Bank et al., and evacuated the population. This, of course, being extremely hypothetical, occurring as it did in the middle of the Cold War.

O.k., this is it for tonight. I have a cocktail to finish and am close to aphasia. "Recognition by the international community" (a concept that is not only oxymoronic, but exists soley in the cerebral cortex of John E'ffn Kerry) don' mean shit to me. As for the Brits recognition, fer crissakes they were helping the bloody Arab Legion during and after the War of Independence!! What the hell would you expect them to do but recognize Jordan's claims?? As for the rest of the so-called international community (and Israel--boy, that must have clinched the deal!) de facto recognition may equal de jure in your book but, as events have proven, the former is no substitute for the latter.

God how I love mutatis mutandis, though I like fettucine a la vongole better. I didn't know that Jordan no longer claimed any part of the West Bank. (Shit! Why would they? After killing 30,000 Palestinians during Black September, I'd have thought they'd have had their fill). But don't you mean that the Arabs in Gaza are Egyptians, that being the country that recognized the territorial claims to that land? Anyway, it's been fun, but the ice melteh and tempus fugit.

Maybe Bigel is right. What possible need could Pakistan have for a modern sub other then to drive a nuke into range to nuke a city? France is guilty of something evil here.

They don't understand why all the good jobs go to people who shower daily, dress neatly, spell properly, and don't spend every night getting baked. Oh, the injustice of it all.

ROTFLMAO!

The original post made me laugh too.

My .02:

They don’t see how a system that leaves 1 billion people living on less than a $1 a day is working.

Presumably the referent of "system" is capitalism. How many of that 1 billion can be said to live in free market capitalist economies? Virtually none. Virtually all of them live in systems that could charitably be described as corrupt authoritarian kleptocracies with choking bureaucracies.
