Talking Truce Before the Job is Done
I’m trying to believe that we have a plan to crush the radicals in Fallujah. But this kind of talk from Paul Bremer, sending exactly the wrong signal to the power-worshipping mujahideen, makes me want to weep in frustration: Truce holding in Fallujah, Bremer says.
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A truce in the bloody US drive against insurgents in Fallujah is holding, US civil administrator Paul Bremer said, as coalition authorities try to quell growing resistence to the US-led occupation of Iraq.
“We have agreed to this ceasefire at the request of a number of the members of the Iraqi government who approached us on Friday evening with a request that we help cease the hostilities there and try to find a way to reduce the bloodshed.
”We’ve been working on it for the last 48 hours, 36 hours,“ he said, during a taped interview with Fox News Sunday.
”I understand that the ceasefire for now is holding and we’re hopeful that we will be able to get some productive talks going.“
”We just have to work our way through this crisis,” Bremer added.
I miss General Patton.
