Barghouti Takes the Fall
Smirking terrorist leader Marwan Barghouti has been convicted by an Israeli court, and will probably receive a life sentence: Palestinian Uprising Leader Convicted.
TEL AVIV, Israel - Palestinian uprising leader Marwan Barghouti, a potential successor to Yasser Arafat, was convicted Thursday in attacks that killed four Israelis and a Greek monk. He faces life in an Israeli prison.
Barghouti, the most senior Palestinian to be convicted by an Israeli court, sat quietly as judges read the ruling. Wearing a brown prison uniform, he appeared relaxed, occasionally blowing kisses to supporters and joking with judges and Israeli-Arab lawmakers.
Sentencing is set for June 6, and the prosecution asked for five consecutive life terms.
In response to the conviction, Palestinian militants threatened to kidnap Israelis as bargaining chips for Barghouti.
Barghouti, who flashed V-signs with shackled hands as he entered the courtroom, reiterated that he does not accept the court’s authority. However, the longtime advocate of a Palestinian state alongside Israel also said he believes there will be peace if Israel withdraws from the West Bank and Gaza.
“I call on the Israeli public, ‘Don’t believe for one moment that you can overcome the Palestinians with force,” he said. “Palestinians have no power, but they have justice on their side.”
