Marines Say Up to 100 Insurgents Killed in Falluja.
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. Marines said on Tuesday that as many as 100 insurgents had been killed in fighting in the hotbed Iraqi town of Falluja.
“Significant numbers of enemy fighters (up to 100) are estimated to have been killed,” said an emailed statement from the U.S. Camp Falluja just outside the town.
An Iraqi hospital official in Falluja earlier told Reuters four people had been killed in fierce battles.
Witnesses said U.S. warplanes pounded suspected guerrilla positions and explosions could be heard as flames engulfed sections of the town, a fierce center of anti-American sentiment.
