Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty says a second group of suicide bombers are believed to be at large in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and may be poised to carry out another terrorist attack.
The warning comes in the wake of Thursday’s blast at the Australian embassy compound, which killed nine people and left more than 150 injured.
Commissioner Keelty says the new warning is based on advice from the intelligence community.
“There is intelligence suggesting that there is a second group active in the area,” he said.
“Intelligence comes through all the time about threats and possible threats and there’s further intelligence in the last 24 to 48 hours of a second group.”
Commissioner Keelty says authorities are treating the intelligence reports seriously.
“It’s uncorroborated but you can’t discount any intelligence or information that you get at this point in time,” he said.
He says the suspected second terror cell may have been recruited by Jemaah Islamiah (JI) bomb maker, Azahari Husin.
