LGF on Prager (w/ Northern Alliance)

Mon, Sep 13, 2004 at 8:18:07 am PDT

The Power Line guys and the other Northern Alliance bloggers are hosting the Dennis Prager radio show this morning, and they’ve asked me to call in. I don’t have a scheduled time yet, but you’ll want to listen to the whole show.

You can listen over the web here: News Talk 870 KRLA. (This audio feed works much better than the 790 AM feed.)

UPDATE at 9/13/04 9:01:02 am:

I’m on hold waiting for the show right now...

UPDATE at 9/13/04 9:38:59 am:

The producer told me there are “technical difficulties,” and I’m currently on hold until things are straightened out.

UPDATE at 9/13/04 9:45:28 am:

I’ve just been told that I’ll be on shortly after 10:00 Pacific time.

I'm sure Mr. Steyn would want me to give you the skinny (Part I):

We still don’t get it
Mark Steyn says that three years after 9/11 the West remains in denial over Islamic terrorism

‘He is sedated,’ said Bill Clinton’s heart surgeon on Tuesday. ‘But he is arousable.’ I’ve never doubted it.

That seems as appropriate a thought as any with which to consider the state of the new war three years on. Like former President Clinton, much of the West is sedated. But is it arousable? On the eve of this week’s anniversary, hundreds of children were murdered in their schoolhouse by terrorists. Terrible. But even more terrible was the reaction of what passes for the civilised world, the reluctance to confront the truth of what had occurred. The perpetrators were ‘separatists’, according to the Christian Science Monitor — what, you mean like my fellow Quebeckers? They were ‘commandoes’, according to Agence France-Presse — you mean like the SAS?

‘We have been confronted with a deep human tragedy,’ said the Dutch foreign minister Ben Bot, speaking for the European Union. ‘I am appalled that a school and its pupils are being used for political ends,’ said Unesco’s director-general Koichiro Matsuura. A ‘tragedy’? ‘Political ends’?

Five days after the slaughter, the New York Times finally got around to using the I-word, and then only in paragraph 24: ‘While the extent of international support may be debated, the attacks bear some trappings of Islamic militancy. Officials here in Beslan said they had found notebooks with Arabic writing, and witnesses reported hearing Arabic exhortations, though the attackers mostly spoke Russian.’

Any Arabic exhortation in particular? Only the slogan of the age, ‘Allahu Akbar’. Nothing to worry about, folks. They may kill kids, but they’re just ‘separatists’, ‘radicals’, ‘activists’. No connection with any events you may have heard about in Madrid, Istanbul, Bali, Tel Aviv or New York. The approved tone in polite society is that of my Telegraph colleague Adam Nicolson: keep it tasteful, keep it elegant, lots of exquisitely honed overwritten allusions — each dead child was ‘a Pietà, the archetype of pity. Each is a Cordelia carried on at the end of Act V...’. Lovely stuff, may even be an award in it. But not a word about the killers or a hint of their identity. Only a limpid, passive sadness. Nicolson is sedated but, unlike Clinton, not arousable.

Three years after September 11, the Islamist death cult is the love whose name no one dare speak. And, if you can’t even bring yourself to identify your enemy, are you likely to defeat him? Can you even know him? He seems to know us pretty well. He understands the pressures he can bring to bear on Spain, and the Philippines, and France, too. He’s come to appreciate the self-imposed constraints under which his enemy fights — the legalisms, the political correctness, the deference to ineffectual multilateralism. He’s revolted by the infidels’ decadence but he has to admit it’s enormously helpful: the useful idiots of the pro-gay, pro-feminist Left are far more idiotic and far more useful to him than they ever were to Stalin. He’s figured out that while pluralistic open democracy might be a debased system of government next to Sharia, it has its moments: he had no idea that quite so many Westerners so loathed their own governments and, if not their own, then certainly America’s. And he never thought that, even in America, while one party is at war, the other party is at war with the very idea that there is a war. And even the party committed to war presides over a lethargic unreformed bureaucracy, large chunks of which are determined to obstruct it.

24 Cam  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:37:35am

Morning all:

I freaking knew that Mark Steyn read LGF!

It took the savvy chappies at the Powerline Web site and Charles Johnson of ''Little Green Footballs'' about 20 minutes to spot the eerily 2004 look of the 1972 memo, and various Internet wallahs spent the rest of the day tracking down the country's leading typewriter identification experts.

25 Dave the.....  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:38:34am

I'm not big on advertiser boycotts. They usually aren't real effective, but and if they were, businesses and their employees are being punished when they really have no clue about the issues.

I think a boycott of CBS is better. Let their rating fall and the advertisers will leave anyway.

There's a suction-cup guy on their window?

27 Beagle  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:40:09am

Steyn in Spectator (Part II):

So, despite the loss of the Afghan training camps and Saddam and the Taleban and three quarters of al-Qa’eda’s leadership, it hasn’t been a bad three years: the enemy has learnt the limits of the West’s resolve, and all he has to do is put a bit of thought into exploiting it in the years ahead. A nuclear Iran will certainly help.

By contrast, what have we learned? According to the Associated Press, last Sunday, at the Bercy stadium in Paris, Madonna dedicated her performance of ‘Imagine’ to what the AP reporter was still calling ‘the Russian hostage crisis’, even though by then the ‘crisis’ was over, as were the lives of the hostages. Madonna ‘urged fans to think about what happened in Russia and Lennon’s lyrics’. Okay:

‘Imagine there’s no heaven It’s easy if you try ...’

Not what I would want to hear if my kid had just been shot dead by a terrorist. More importantly, if Madonna is advocating global secularism as the answer to terrorism, she’s backing a loser. For the fellows pulling the martyrdom routines, heaven is a brothel. In Madonna terms, it’s ‘Like A Virgin’ times 72. It’s the jackpot, it’s winning the lottery. Telling the guy it’s a fraud and your crappy life in Egypt or Saudi Arabia is all there is doesn’t seem likely to work. Doesn’t it make more sense to try to move him into buying the idea of heaven as a lot of fluffy clouds where we sit around twanging harps all day rather than attempting to shunt him all the way over into instant radical post-Christian atheism?

This isn’t a theoretical proposition. Last year a senior Dutch cabinet minister talked me through some very interesting findings apropos his own country’s Islamic population. The grandchildren of Muslims who arrived in Holland in the Seventies are often more militantly Islamist and unassimilated than their grandparents. Raised in a society as close as one can find to the sappy nihilism of Lennon’s lyric, they decided it had no appeal for them. I mocked the singing of ‘Imagine’ on some 9/11 all-star memorial gala in the fall of 2001, yet here it is again, irrelevant, dated, but indestructible as ever. Singing ‘Imagine’ is a sure sign of a failure to imagine.

That’s really the heart of it: the failure of what Osama bin Laden saw as a soft pampered West to imagine that it can ever all come to an end. Three years ago, for the cover of our September 11 issue, Heath drew us a defiant Statue of Liberty, her torch held high above the headline ‘The West Must Fight Back.’ Nice idea, but it didn’t quite work out like that. 9/11 was not ‘the day that changed the world’ but instead the day that revealed how much the world had already changed. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, ‘the West’, for example, had lacked sufficient sense of common purpose to ‘fight back’.

Charles:

Being an old guy now and subject to "senior moments" I might be having one now. But, IIRC, Times New Roman wasn't licensed from London Times until the 1980's. Moreover, it was originally licensed for typesetting (Harris?) and later by Microsoft and Apple for TrueType. I know for sure there are copyright issues with TrueType; it is not open source. I had always understood that this copyright issue was precisely the Times New Roman licensing. Do these memories jibe with your own? If so, doesn't that eliminate even the early phototypesetters in 1972? Let alone any impact printing device.

Steyn (Part III) -- I left a bunch out before Part III, and after. There will be no Part IV. It's worth registering for. The Spectator (UK) features intellectually diverse, intelligent opinion pieces.

In her lame apologia for last week’s kiddie-killers, the Guardian’s Isabel Hilton rhapsodised about ‘asymmetrical warfare’ — how else could the poor wee insurgents/ activists/whatever fight back against overwhelmingly superior force? But these days who’s really ‘superior’? An old-fashioned European army — Belgium’s, say — is incapable of projecting itself to Saudi Arabia; but a terrorist group in Saudi Arabia, through routine innovations like email, cell phones and automated bank machines, can easily project itself to Belgium. What did 9/11 cost its perpetrators? Flight lessons would be below $5,000 depending on how impatient the hijackers were (as Zac Moussaoui told his instructors, he didn’t need to learn how to land); boxcutters cost a couple of bucks; add in a few rental cars and motels, and that’s it. For around $150,000, 19 not especially talented terrorists killed more than 3,000 people and caused immediate economic damage of $27 billion, with the final tab yet to be calculated.

That’s what I call asymmetrical. Now imagine nuclear technology, which long ago slipped the bunkers of the great powers. If you’re a quiet-lifer like the Spaniards, who do you talk to to head off catastrophe? There isn’t an ‘al-Qa’eda’ in the sense of an organisation one can enter into formal peace talks with, as Mo Mowlam advises. There are local terror groups sharing the same aims and methods from Algeria to Indonesia and, like crime families, they all know who to go to if they happen to find themselves in Chechnya, or Kosovo, or Sudan, or Colombia. And there are freelance acts of mayhem committed by chaps who wake up one morning and hear the call of the jihad — the British shoebomber and the Washington sniper both fall into this category. Not all Muslims are al-Qa’eda supporters, but they don’t have to be. If just 1 per cent is generally sympathetic, that’s enough for a vast global support network.

37 Ann_Observer  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:48:18am

You wouldn't think it possible, but there it is. The Cincinnati Post has written an editorial which uses the CBS documents to cast doubt on Bush's past--and there is not one word that suggests that the documents are anything other than genuine. That's right, not one word. It's breathtaking, stunning.

Here's the link:

[Link: www.cincypost.com...]

And the conclusion? Oh, Bush is just as bad as Kerry. Let's move on.

What we're witnessing here is something akin to a core meltdown of old-style liberal media.

38 Connecticut Yankee  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:48:53am

Meanwhile, the War Hero is still hiding from the Dan Rathers et al: Hugh Hewitt reports:

"'They have taken their eye off the real ball,' Mr. Kerry said, his voice almost shaking in anger. 'They took it off in Afghanistan and shifted it to Iraq. They took it off in North Korea and shifted it to Iraq. They took it off in Russia, and the nuclear materials there, and shifted it to Iraq.'"

John Kerry gave a 15-minute interview to the New York Times over the phone. No word on whether it was from an undisclosed location with word processing equipment. Note the "his voice almost shaking in anger" aside, underscoring that once again John Kerry has displayed all the calm leadership of a crisis manager of superb qualifications. It is now 44 days since Kerry answered questions on camera from a major journalist --heh, Dan Rather certainly no longer counts, in fact, no one from CBS does-- and he's trying to substitute softball encounters with friendlies at the Times and Time Magazine for the real deal.

What is the decorated War Hero afraid of? Bloggers in PJs?

Where at?

40 Obscure  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:51:04am

Check it out. USA Today says they got the documents independently of CBS and apparently they were given two additional documents that were either not shown to CBS or not shown by CBS. It's interesting because in one of the new documents the header has a superscripted 111th but the otherwise identical headers DOES NOT.

[Link: www.usatoday.com...]

Look at the memo for 24 June 1973 and compare the headers with the memos dated 01 August 1972 and 04 May 1972. The Aug and May 72 headers are not superscripted. The June 73 one is superscripted. Interesting, no?

On the Memogate topic, has anyone mentioned this yet, about how the officer who supposedly ordered Killian to "sugar coat" Bush's record had retired from the TANG 17 months before the date of that memo? I apologise if it's already been mentioned, I've been out of the the LGF loop for the past few days.

44 Obscure  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:53:07am

Quick correction:

CBS was either not given the extra documents or they were given them and they chose not to show them. Considering the inconsistencies between the June 73 header and the headers of the other memos, I believe they chose to not show them at all.

45 rosh  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 6:54:18am

Yes, but it's worth repeating.

William Safire has an op-ed in today's NY Times: Those Discredited Memos.

Alert bloggers who knew the difference between the product of old typewriters and new word processors immediately suspected a hoax: the "documents" presented by CBS News suggesting preferential treatment in Lt. George W. Bush's National Guard service have all the earmarks of forgeries.
{snip}

After leading with that response, Post media reporter Howard Kurtz noted that the handwriting expert Matley said that CBS had asked him not to give interviews, and that an unidentified CBS staff member who had examined the documents saw potential problems with them: "There's a lot of sentiment that we should do an internal investigation."

Newsweek (which likes the word "discredited") has apparently begun an external investigation: it names "a disgruntled former Guard officer" as a principal source for CBS, noting "he suffered two nervous breakdowns" and "unsuccessfully sued for medical expenses."

It may be that CBS is the victim of a whopping journalistic hoax, besmearing a president to bring him down. What should a responsible news organization do?

To shut up sources and impugn the motives of serious critics - from opinionated bloggers to straight journalists - demeans the Murrow tradition. Nor is any angry demand that others prove them wrong acceptable, especially when no original documents are available to prove anything.

That's a great example, Babylonian. Look at the sample you posted. In this presumably authentic document, the "th" does not rise above the top of "111". Notice how the top of the "th" and the top of the "111" are on the same plain.

In the CBS forgeries, the top of "111" is exactly centered on the "th", the precise way that MS Word renders this superscript.

The only people who refuse to accept the documents as forgeries are those who refuse to see.

Also look at the other typein that document, does it match the memo's? Even close? Nope.

We found the equipment that has all the relevant features. We have discovered the machine that can easily reproduce the memos. All the features, on one machine. (Windows based computer using MS word)

No one else has done this. Period.

"Those who doubt the documents say those typographical elements would not have been commonly available at the time of Bush's service. But such characters were common features on electric typewriters of that era, the Globe determined through interviews with specialists and examination of documents from the period. In fact, one such raised ''th," used to describe a Guard unit, the 187th, appears in a document in Bush's official record that the White House made public earlier this year."

A good article by Ben Johnson on Frontpagemag.com on
Bush's Advantage on Military Service

The facts show George W. Bush served honorably in the National Guard from 1968-73, volunteering the most hours when the country was most likely to call on him and decreasing his flight time as the nation pulled out of Vietnam.

{snip}

George W. Bush entered the Texas Air National Guard upon graduating from Yale in May of 1968. For the next two years, Bush would fly almost non-stop for 80 weeks, making his Reserve duty a full-time job. From May 1968-69, he earned 253 flight points, more than five times the required annual minimum for Reserve members. He earned nearly 100 points more than that the following year. From 1970-72, he earned more than twice his minimum each year.

I don't know if anybody cares at this point or what mileage we can get out of it, but I actually got an EMAIL reply from Jim Naureckas of "FAIR". In my original email to him, I raked him over the coals for buying into the "Documents are authentic" garbage.

He emailed me back with the following:

"The font is clearly not MS Word Times New Roman. Look at the 8s.

Regards,

Jim Naureckas"

*laughs* So that's what passes for investigative journalism at "FAIR" these days--no acknowledgement of the dozen or so problems with the "authenticity" of the docs in question--instead all that is offerred is quibbling over the "8s".

If Charles wants to see the email, I'd be happy to forward it to him.

The superscript in the heading is important, because one of the defenses of the precise centering found in the heading is that the heading may have been a preprinted form.

The differences in the heading between the memo with the th and the ones without shows this is unlikely to be the case.

Also noteworthy that the th in the heading is consistent with the other Microsoft Word-style superscripts in the later documents.

I think the difference is between using anger to fuel positive behavior toward the outside cause...

and turning the anger energy against yourself. Wrong is wrong, but you don't destroy yourself (or your family members) over it.

I had a whole lot of unfair stuff happen to me years ago - I used to be in angry angst about it all the time, then I realized I was harming myself as well as being a pain in the butt to friends who put up with me.

(Then there's the example of a person who divorces a mean, irresponsible spouse, then takes out the anger on the children.)

Okay, so I admit that I am a Tool/A Perfect Circle fan... especially APC's latest, Thirteenth Step. I have always known that Maynard Keenan was a moonbat, but an infantile video for a bastardized version of the song "Pet," now retitled "Counting Bodies Like Sheep" has put them on my perma-ban list.

Go watch this infantile piece of intellectually devoid tripe and then ponder life without their music any longer.

Easy for some, tougher for those (like me) who are (were) fans of the music. (Danny Carey rocks)

Here is APC's website - click the link, click the icon at the 6:00 position (Music) then click watch. I believe it's the first video, but you can't miss it - the icon for it is two sheep.

For a bunch of musicians who have made their living convincing the public that they're a bit deeper and more intelligent than some, this is particularly revolting.

I was disgusted.

Babylonian

Numerous attempts already have been made to try and duplicate the documents using the best technology available at the time, IBM Executive and IBM Selectric Composer typewriters. Though some initally may appear similar, scrutiny by even untrained eyes reveals significant discrepancies to the CBS documents.

On the other hand, the CBS documents have been duplicated with a precision (at the resolution of thousandths of characters) that was not available in 1972-73 (large fractions of characters, like 1/4) even to the most sophisticated typesetting equipment.

The basic logical question involved in this dispute is: can the documents be duplicated with 1972-73 era equipment or can they be duplicated with MS Word?

At this point, those alleging forgeries can easily duplicate the documents to great precision and resolution. Those defending the documents cannot.

120 Obscure  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 7:33:02am

#105 Dal ur Harb,

That's what I am saying. If it were pre-printed there shouldn't be any differences.

The superscripted header was not shown by CBS. The superscripted document is only available from USA Today.

And since it's identical to the other superscript in the text of one of the other memos that means it is likely that the same machine (or program) that created the header also created the text of the memos. Therefore the pre-printed argument is bogus.

We have a guy who works for us who was assaulted by his (then) wife some years ago. His counsellor had told him that when this happens to try and leave the house rather than reacting. So he tries to leave the house and in the process of opening the door she ends up getting her toe stubbed. Long story short, she charged him with Domestic Assault and he was ordered into "Anger Management".

The gist of their teaching was that containing your anger is unhealthy and one should just let it out.

Wonderful. Now any time he is the slightest bit pissed off he unleashes in what is essentially a temper tantrum. There is something to be said for containing one's anger.

USA Today engages 2 retired FBI experts on documents and signatures over the authenticity of the memos. Both experts claim that in their opinion, based on at least the 3rd generation of the documents that they viewed, the docs are fraudulent.

Ultimately, this issue needs to move beyond the facts that the docs are fraudulent. No one can duplicate them with the devices at the time - regardless if Killian had them or knew how to use them.

The supporters of the DNC and Kerry want to gain revenge for the damage that the Swift Boat vets inflicted on Kerry for his 30+ years of embelishing his record and for his refusal to sign form 180 and let his records stand in the light of day.

They want to tit for tat against Bush - and are attacking the TANG service - just as they tried to do over the last decade whenever Bush ran for office. There is no truth or facts here - but the goal is to raise doubt, slime and muck up the waters so much that even if false, the stench remains on Bush.

What this is doing is alienating the undecided while pandering to the L cube base. How pitifull that when they have an opportunity to take the debate to the real issues - they remain here.

OT
From Instapundit comes this link to the Spectator
[Link: www.spectator.org...]

MEANWHILE, OVER THE WEEKEND journalists from around the country were attempting to track down the original source of the documents. "We're having a hard time tracking how we got the documents," says the CBS News producer. "There are at least two people in this building who have insisted we got copies of these memos from the Kerry campaign by way of an additional source. We do not have the originals, and our sources have indicated to us that we will not be getting the originals. How that is possible I don't know."

Read the whole article. It's about the "no internal investivation" that has the CBS news staff scrambling.

186 Dave the.....  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 8:04:34am
There is no truth or facts here - but the goal is to raise doubt, slime and muck up the waters so much that even if false, the stench remains on Bush.

Yes, by muddying everything up, the impact of the SBVT and other vet groups is greatly muted. A very effective campaign tactic.

187 Security Mom  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 8:04:43am

Val Kilmer as Moses? Did anybody else hear that? Am I hearing things?

188 brakes  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 8:04:51am

I think the Dr. is talking about how destructive hate is, it's like taking poison and hoping it will kill our enemies. He isn't saying that we shouldn't fight to protect ourselves.

While we're waiting for Charles (torture!) Did anyone see Kitty Kelly on today? I think she is totally making all that stuff up. Then they had Sharon Bush and one thing I didn't understand -- why didn't the Bush family give her enough money when Neil dumped her? I mean, he was the one screwing around. It's not like they couldn't afford it. I think she got mad and said the things she said becuase the Bush family left her without money. I don't ever like to say anything bad about the Bushes (not a good idea!!!) but I bet they wish they had given her money so she didn't talk to Kitty Kelly (even if it was all lies, or maybe it was just one brother (NOT W!!!) taking drugs at Camp David. Anyway.. here comes CHARLES!!! (I hope). (He is the KING).

There's an important difference you can see a bit clearer on

[Link: img.photobucket.com...]

In the memo, the "th" is true superscript, that is, it is both reduced in size and rises above full sized characters. These two things in combination are important because they can only be duplicated through modern equipment.

In the image of what looks like a report, the "th" is not two typed out superscripted characters, it was made by a single key that contains two characters which are underlined. The key places the image within the boundaries of a letter space. It is not superscripted - it does not rise above the other letters. This key was (obviously) found on specialized typewriting equipment which was in use at the time.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that because the th's are both little, they are the "same". There are important differences that show one can be made on equipment of that era, and the other cannot.

223 Athos  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 8:10:41am

#222 FloridaHeat,

I know all about that but that isn't what I am saying. USA Today has two ADDITIONAL memos they say they got independently of CBS and presumably from the same source CBS got theirs from. In one of the new memos, there is a superscripted th in the HEADER. In the other documents there is NO superscripted th in the HEADERS. At all. In the OTHER memos the only place a superscripted th occurs is in TEXT of the memos NOT the HEADERS. The headers from the CBS documents have no superscripted ths. There are two of them.

[Link: www.usatoday.com...]

Look at all the headers and look at the header of the memo dated 24 June 1973 to see what I mean.

I'm still laughing and laughing about the meteor thing! Charles really nailed it with that one! Because, how could a meteor ever write a memo? For one thing, it doesn't have any fingers! For another thing, it's too hot! (Until it cools down). For another thing, if it fell on a typewriter it would probably break it, not write a whole memo! (How would it know what letters to type).

Charles is a GENIUS! How did he come up with that!!!

LGF ROCKS and RULES!!!

Hahaha.

I am at work and don't have the time to look at the new ones, but if you hit "space" before the superscript, Word will put it in a normal font. In other words, if you type "111th", Word will convert the "th" to superscript. But, if you type "111 th" Word will leave it that way.

#343 [Engineer],

I know that, too. You can also either turn off the superscripting option in Word or you can hit CTRL + Z to undo the format change to superscript. They did that for the two memos with headers that CBS had. Those two headers are not superscripted so if they were produced in Word which is highly likely, they got around the superscript problem. But they forgot to do it in the new memo. In the new one that USAT produced that came from the same source the header was superscripted and that means that they didn't undo the superscripting. They screwed up. Two of the headers are the same but the third one, the one that CBS didn't show, is superscripted. Probably because they didn't want any questions about the discrepancy between the headers.

Glenn Reynolds just picked this up from "The Prowler" over at American Spectator

Not many more questions to be answered around RatherGate.

What remains to be answered is who will be cast in the made for TV movie "Courage: the downfall of Dan Rather".

Since the theme of this election is "Retro," the cast should be too, IMO.

I think Alec Baldwin should play Dan Rather. As for Charles, let's get past the typecasting and have him played by Mr. T. The final climactic scene will have Rather leaving the CBS News building with his box of desk items, and seeing Charles being mobbed by a throng of reporters. Jealous and petty, Rather will come over and try to sucker punch Charles (Mr. T), but Charles will grab his fist, crush it and make some "I pitty the fool" comment. All very retro.

Charles covered his creation of the Word document which perfectly matched the "memos." He then moved on to a quick list of the many problems with the memo from a technical perspective. Check the threads to see basically what he said. He used a meteor metaphor to point out the critical argument: even if there is an outside chance someone could have created the memo with 1970's technology, there is no evidence they did. Moreover, the technology was far outside any typewriter a military man would have used for typing a memo. In other words, even if it was possible to use the 1970's equivalent of desktop publishing, which did not exist but for one high-end very expensive IBM, that strains credulity.

The whole segment was about 10 minutes, tops.

Power Line has the side-by-side with a real Killian memo from the time period. That's all I needed to see after the overlay Charles did. It's a forgery, 100% chance.

I usually get feed from here and read through them from the reader. But once in a while, I have to get involved in a thread. I've been following Charle's Forgery Experiments since the beginning (and its caused problems with my brother and father, whom are kerry supporters [their flawed, but they're family])

Hopefully someone will have captured the clip to disk and make it available to all of us minions.

Aircraft recon shows Ivan now down to 912 mb, meaning the storm continues to slowly strengthen.

Latest visible satellite loop.

Since the storm is expected to make landfall in about 60 to 78 hours, and since tropical storm foce winds extend 330 km ahead of the center, and since NHC policy is to issue a "HURRICANE WATCH" 36 hours before sustained tropical storm force winds reach the possibly affected coastline, I would expect a HURRICANE WATCH to be issued at the 5pm EDT, certainly no later than the 11 pm EDT advisory, for the northern and northeastern Gulf from about Morgan City, LA to Cedar Key, FL give or take 100 km.

Kerry said that he would always tell the public the truth, and if the audience didn't believe him, they could "[g]o to a web site. It can be johnkerry.com or go some other place. Go to truth.com, if there is one, and find out what's really happening," Kerry said.

Truth.com won't set you free, but at least you'll be able to see a bit more clearly. Truth.com is operated by Truth Hardware, makers of a complete line of locks, window hinges and remote-controlled power window systems.

Too funny ... and baffling.

Go to truth.com, if there is one, and find out what's really happening," Kerry said.

WTF is that supposed to mean?!

CBS cannot even stay in control of their hottest documents, the ones all America is interested in. Or they lie. Either way, you can stick a fork in them... they're done.

As I stated on another thread...I think maybe the new Texas "Veterans for Truth" group, formed in answer to and not to be confused with the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth", decided to do something special for Kerry's campaign and together with former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes cooked up the idea of these documents which damn Bush with faint praise and worse. They probably got Dan Rather (another Texas good ol' boy and staunch Dem. contributor) to agree to do a story on the documents and used his daughter, who works in the party, to pass the documents to Dan's producer and fellow Texan, Mary Mapes. The rest is history.

Its a matter of 'Oh we can stick it to Bush and we have it first! lets roll!' and of course any company who has so much money can't be wrong! Remeber the golden rule: Who ever has the gold, makes the rules.

They screwed up, and expected the people to swollow it, and now they will pay the price.

443 Havoc  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 9:49:23am

# 425 yeah that "Prowler" article is telling

It will be interesting to see if they track the memos to Tom Harken's staff or Dem operative Burkett already having planted discredited Bush-Bash stories on CBS.

More Telling is at the bottom of the article about over the weekend low morale and Kerry's D.C. office imploding

They've had staff at CBS and DNC looking for these memos for over three years. Suddenly they all turn up together ?

On a happier note -- Kerry Spot has a nice photo of Capt. Larry Bailey of Vets for Truth speaking at the "Kerry Lied" rally at Upper Senate Park in D.C. Sunday

Fox has a good update on the DNC attack ad campaign focusing on Memogate as if it is a real story, Operation Fortunate Son

Why would the DNC continue to purse this ? A: They know the battleground states' "you can fool some of the people all of the time" undecided apathetic voters may buy it.

I think the DNC is on a high risk strategy of allienating some of the "normal people" in their base. They could lose more than they gain, Iowa and Wisconsin ain't L.A. and Miami.

States up for grabs, PA, NJ, FL, NV, CO, WS, OH, MI, IA MO, AR, ME, NC

They add up to 176 Electoral Votes

To the person who wanted to know what Charles said was this, he said it must have not been a typeriter becuase he did it in WORD and all the same things matched, the lines and the tabs. And he said he had put them together so you could see it was the same. He sounded really great except maybe he has a cold because he sound stuffed up a little or maybe he just has that kind of (nasel) voice. Mabye they could fix it if he was on the radio every day. And then he had this great bit (Im still laughing) where they asked him if the memo could have been written. He said no and then yes, it could have been written like this (please someone write it out if you have record).

Charles - "Well you could have a giant meteor and it could fall into the atmosphere and split into three pieces and one of those pieces could land on a desk and write the memo"

Well, I just lost it because everyone knows that meteors cant write. They're too hot for one thing and even when theyr cold they still cant. So it was Charles way of telling everyone how stupid they were and I think it was brilliant. I'm waitinng for MP files so I can sent that part to everyone. Well thats it for now, thats what he said and he was very very good.

thats all now.

Chuck Canterbury, national president of the Fraternal Order of Police, today [9/10/04] announced the organization's endorsement of President George W. Bush in his reelection effort.
"For the past four years, President George W. Bush has proved himself to be one of the very best friends that rank-and-file law enforcement officers have ever had," Canterbury said from Albuquerque, N.M., where the group's National Board is meeting this weekend. "We are fortunate to have this man in the White House and we are proud to give him our endorsement today."

Rapes and sexual assaults were down 15%
Robberies were down 21%
Assaults were down 13%
Personal thefts were down 29%
Property crimes were down 7%
The per capita serious violent youth crime rate in 2002 was 11.2, the lowest rate in 22 years.
Only 16.5 percent of serious violent crime in the United States involved juveniles in 2002, down from 23.2 percent in 2001.

458 OldManRick  Mon, Sep 13, 2004 10:30:16am

Charles,

Heard you this morning on 790. Solid performance for a short call.

About the GPS analogy that was used a a counter. In 1978 I interviewed with Motorola in Torrance (near you) about working on the GPS receiver. Something about a degree in math helping to program the location equations.

The analogy is stupid.

GPS was a military developed capability designed to help locate units in the field. It is especially useful in calling in artillery. You use GPS to fix your location, figure where you want the incoming to arrive, and call the battery. The battery uses GPS to pinpoint their location and figures out how to direct the fire. It is also useful in not getting lost and report to HQ your current position. It can be especially useful when flying towards a carrier over an open ocean. The military made the decision to broadcast unencrypted to allow civil use (for airliners for example) but has always retained a higher accuracy capability for military use.

The proportional type typewriter was developed by IBM and others for commercial applications and market advantage. The military did not fund it, would not get any significant war-fighting advantage out of it, it provides no communication capabilities like a TTY and, if they had asked to fund it, would have been laughed out of congress. Any comparison of systems is ridiculous. No commander would think that having the top of the line office equipment would be a source of pride in a unit. They would use the cheapest functional typewriter available. End of story.

If the caller wants to continue the analogy, the he should show that there was a funded program to develop the top of the line typewriter equipment for our military. To paraphrase General Turgidson, “Mr President, We cannot allow a typewriter gap!”

It appears the area of disturbed weather near the Leeward Islands will be upgraded to Tropical Depression #11. It will likely hit Puerto Rico as a strong tropical storm, then head west-northwest to threaten Florida and the Carolinas.

Of course, before the future Hurricane Jeanne threatens Florida again, Mobile Bay/Pensacola area will likely be hit by now Cat 5, probably then borderline Cat3/Cat4 Hurricane Ivan Wednesday night into Thursday night.

Hurricane Ivan, now making the definite turn to the northwest on the left, the soon to be upgraded Tropical Depression #11 on the right.

My office is pretty caszh, and since we're not expecting any meetings today, a University of Texas t-shirt (although judging from the fairly lackluster play shown in just squeaking past an unranked Razorback team, I have little hope that Texas beats OU this year. I also fully expect another loss after that, an upset against either Texas Tech or Oklahoma State. Of course, a 9-2 Texas team may go BCS bowling, but is at best a 50/50 shot to win, as I think Texas is probably barely a top 10 team.

But I have no doubt the Horns will lay a severe smackdown on aTm. Sad, really, driving down the interstates of Houston, all the "Saw Varsity's Horns" or "TU Sucks" or whatever bumper stickers on the vehicles of the poor aggies. Yeesh, they go play Utah State and no wonder they can't win, their singing about how they don't like "The Eyes of Texas".

Anyway, as I said, UT sweathsirt, "Dockers' style shorts. White socks, black shoes.

Maybe I can ask my wife about college after I finish with my student loans from my last time at college.

Better late than never with my response. :) Had to watch a video with my munchkin.

Someone on one of these threads mentioned the USA Today pdf file had a different creation date and versions of adobe acrobat than the CBS pdf file. (I don't see a creation or modification date on the url you sent, so I can't speak to that.)

Because of the similarities in errors on all of the documents, superscript th being just one, I would guess they all came from the same source. But it does raise an interesting point. Will both CBS and USA Today protect their source, even if that source gave them fakes?

The only reason I can see they would do this is exactly what the Spectator reported - the DNC gave them to Kerry and Kerry gave them to friendly media. The media, by staying silent on the source, is protecting Kerry until he can come up with another CYA story.

Some forensic experts were quoted by news organizations, including The Associated Press, saying the memos appeared to have been computer-generated with characteristics that weren't available three decades ago.

Or, the supplier of the memos could have said, "You can post them, but only if you use Acrobat to render them as PDFs."
