The Smoking Memo

Tue, Sep 14, 2004 at 5:24:38 pm PDT

For our new visitors following John Podhoretz’s citation of Little Green Footballs on the Bill O’Reilly show, here is the animated graphic to which Mr. Podhoretz referred, showing my document created with default settings in Microsoft Word for Mac OS X, overlaid on the CBS News Killian memo from August 19, 1973:

UPDATE at 9/14/04 6:44:00 pm:

To follow this whole story chronologically as we covered it, here is our CBS Killian Document Index, posted yesterday.

A mention on the "th" alignment might help.

Podhoretz gave great props, Charles.

He forgot the "/weblog" though.

Wouldn't it be nice if Kerry would actually talk about the issues? He's still fighting the Vietnam War. If I were undecided, I would want the candidates to tell me why I should vote for them, wouldn't you?

Nice that LGF got a mention on O'Reilly's show!

However, O'Reilly is startlingly clueless.

- CBS News runs with a story based upon obviously forged documents.

- CBS News uses a Kerry campaign flack Ben Barnes as a 'credible witness' during the story to back the forged documents.

So O'Reilly says to guest Podhertz, "What's the big deal?"

I don't know why his show is so popular -- it's about 1% as informative and insightful as Special Report with Brit Hume.

And that's no spin.

He mentioned this place at least 3 times. Bill mis-mentioned it once calling it "little footballs". It is great how Charles was so on top of this. What an excellent blog.

1. Open up registration for a limited number of people? Maybe 100 and then close it again?
2. Set up an immediate redirect from littlegreenfootballs.com to /weblog/weblog.php or else to this thread for the Fox viewers because he gave an incomplete URL and those people are likely adding strain to the server loading that image-heavy FP...

Just before getting blown off LGF, I was posting..

John Podhoretz Gave you good stuff....buy more POWER, you're going to need it. LGF is going to get Bombed...incoming isn't exactly the word...BOMBED is the word.

17 Powderfinger  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 3:36:59pm

Charles,

Mad props, Lizard Master. While the smoke started elsewhere, you set CBS and the Dems on fire...with the facts.

You've also done more for the blogosphere in the last week or so than anyone has ever done before. This is democracy in action, and it's a frigging beautiful thing.

This has been the perfect storm. I hope you're enjoying it...and I hope Hosting Matters holds up better than Dan Rather.

Good on ya!

O'Reilly looks pretty good. Looks like he's been on Atkins. (You can tell I haven't watched in a long time)

Laurie Dhue saying a radio outage out west (presumably ATC) has resulted in planes in a ground stop in Las Vegas and other cities in the West.

Huh?

22 Ms.ConservativeAmerica  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 3:43:15pm

I'm new to the site (thanks O'Reilly!) and it's one of the best I've seen. Great Job LGF! You're doing an excellent job and have my utmost respect! Keep up the great work.

LGF is getting hammered right now.

On the crumples in the pdf: now we have to trust Dan Rather that the unnamed source who obtained these 30 year old documents from the secret files of a guy wh o has been dead for 20 years kept them crumpled up...

Cause at least from the waste up Dan Rather does not wear pajamas when he reports the news.

Charles - Glenn Reynolds is on Paula Zahn (CNN) right now (along with the Johnson guy from Powerline) talking about how the bloggers did the takedown on this, and he pointed to your famous overlay of CBS's memo and the identical one you typed in Word.

YOU ROCK, O LIZARDOID MASTER! :-p

(Disclaimer: No, of course I don't normally watch CNN; I tuned in because Glenn mentioned his appearance on the Instapundit site. Yeesh. Have a little respect for my intelligence.)

LGF has arrived; favorable mentions on both Fox and CNN. The controversy regarding the authenticity of the memos is over; the only remaining question is the damage done to CBS and the Kerry campaign.

However, Glenn Reynolds did put things in perspective, he compared a successful blogger to a professional bowler with a small, but loyal, fan base.

Wow!
Over at CaptainsQuarter,
[Link: www.captainsquartersblog.com...]
he's got a must read article.

ABC's Brian Ross interviewed the two experts who CBS hired to validate the National Guard documents and reports they ignored concerns they raised prior to the CBS News broadcast. "I did not feel that they wanted to investigate it very deeply," Emily Will told Ross. "I did not authenticate anything and I don't want it to be misunderstood that I did," Linda James told Ross. Ross reports 2 experts told ABC News today that even the most advanced typewriter available in 1972 could not have produced the documents

He does a job on Rather and CBS.

Up to now, we assumed that CBS ran with the forgeries not out of malice as much as avarice and ignorance. Now that view may turn out to have been too charitable. Far from failing to properly vet the documents, CBS knowingly moved forward with these forgeries, only stopping long enough to shop for a couple of supporting opinions from people who turned out to be unqualified to authenticate them

6 William, I hear you. I also miss Tony Snow who shifted to radio primarily. He and Britt are both excellent, IMHO. 79 Michael Levy  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 4:23:16pm

Charles:

I think the most effective line of attack right now is to demand CBS release high-quality scans of the documents that it has already released. The fact it will not do so strongly suggests it knows the documents are frauds and that it is acting in bad faith.

A demand for high-quality scans is not like a demand for an apology, for them to admit the docs are fake, or for them to have an internal investigation. It is a very, very simple demand, something they should have done a long time ago, and it is completely non-partisan.

Part of the CBS hoax story, as it unfolds, should be a very clear component of what CBS could do to prove it is acting in good faith, and then hammer then for failing to do so.

This is such a good talking point for the anti-CBS critics because it is extremely simple for laypeople to understand--you don't have to know what "kerning" or "psuedo-kerning" is to know CBS is withholding information from experts.

PS: I apologize in advance if this shows up eight times :-(

I have been trying to post for the last hour trying to explain my giddiness and pride in being part of LGF for a long time.

I have pointed out LGF (and blogs in general) to many a person, only to be told that I am getting fed crap by unsourced websites.

But I'll stick to my blogs over the MSM anyday... especially LGF!

P.S. Happy B'day to Colt, also.

84 Beagle  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 4:27:38pm

O'Reilly almost seemed as threatened by the blogosphere as Dan Rather does. I guess discovering dozens of people who could do your job for a small fraction of the money would be disconcerting.

That is some major comeupance.

87 BenJeremy  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 4:30:20pm

Sean Hannity had an interesting point: The Democrats made a point of mentioning details "revealed" in these memos a few days before CBS aired them.

My theory: The documents were meant to kick off "Operation Bush Bash" with the Fortunate Son video and Kerry's upcoming speech thursday, where they plan to try and roast Bush.

I hope they follow through with the speech. It will fail MISERABLY. They really are out of touch....

Texas congressman Jim Turner (D) was in full partisan mode - sickening. I've never seen anybody writhe so uncomfortably while worming his own agenda into the appearance.

Now CNN Founder Rees Schonfeld is further muddying Memogate with his "CBS brought in more experts, and its one set of experts against another" - yeah, a typewriter repairman who posts on a Bush-bashing site is a real expert. Meh.

At least this is blowing up now. It's a shame a more "respected" (i.e. MSM liberal Pulitzer qualifier [redundant, I know]) reporter hasn't jumped on this like Woodward and Bernstein did on that little old burglary - this is bigger - instead of committing burglary to find REAL dirt, a political group is committing FRAUD to MAKE UP dirt!!! A real journalist would be hot on this to the bitter end, working every angle until the real sources rooted out and the bigger story uncovered.

Alas, today's media is berift of such altruistic, honest, and noble reporting traditions. Has there ever been an age when the media was anything but a means for the left to attack the right?

93 Geepers  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 4:32:13pm

I think the vast majority of people trying to view the "smoking document" are just going to give up after 20 minutes of "sorry this page is unavailable".

Is there any way to mirror for times when you know you're going to get spiked. Too late for this time of course, but I have the feeling a lot of people will never see this comparison which is truly unfortunate.

I must admit, the characters line up very well between the 2 docs in your animated gif.

But you must admit, the typefaces are not the same. Your image is very small. Look at the full-sized document. Look at the 8 and the 7. Clearly a different typeface. Look at the serifs. The CBS docs were done in a typeface with a slab serif. Look at the tail on the g's. The serif atop the J. The serif at the bottom of the p's. And look at how the lower-case e's jump off the baseline in the CBS doc.

It's close -- very close.

But no cigar.

UPDATE: Congressman Chris Cox, a member of the relevant subcommittee, just announced on my program that hearings on the CBS fraud are likely; that the source of the docs is the most pressing issue; and that CBS execs had promised in hearings conducted after the 2000 election to not allow the competitive pressures to get a story to lead to lousy news-gathering. He doubts there is enough time to hold such a hearing before the election, but allowed as how public pressure might force the subcommittee to act even in the few legislative days left to it.

He apparently doesn't understand what happens when you run a copy of a copy of a copy (and so on, 10 to 15 times) through a photocopier. It has mechanical components that don't feed smoothly, resulting in vertical smears (smears are something sockeye and his ilk love to create, apparently) and when combined with imperfect optics, dust, and blotchy laser toner, gives the traditionaly many-copies look of those fake memos.

It is the same font, and same size. Only an idiot or a fraud would say different.

Sockeye's been selling that all over town. The serifs, which are tiny, get distorted due to faxing and copying. The fact is that the alignment of lines, characters, and tab stops between MS Word on a modern computer and a typewriter of 1972 so unlikely as to be indistinguishable from impossible.

Congrats, Charles.

From ABC News

Two of the document experts hired by CBS News now say the network ignored concerns they raised prior to the broadcast of 60 Minutes II about the disputed National Guard records attributed to Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, who died in 1984.

Emily Will, a veteran document examiner from North Carolina, told ABC News she saw problems right away with the one document CBS hired her to check the weekend before the broadcast.

"I found five significant differences in the questioned handwriting, and I found problems with the printing itself as to whether it could have been produced by a typewriter," she said.

Even more interesting stuff from your link:

Dan Rather Lied About His Own Military Record

(Original story on NewsMax)
Given, that Dan is having such a hard time getting G dubya's record straight, I think it would be most enlightening to take a look at the troubles Dan was having getting his own record straight::

Goldberg recounts that when he told the network star in 1996 of his upcoming Wall Street Journal op-ed piece citing a specific CBS News report as an example of left-wing bias, Rather replied he was "getting viscerally angry about this.”
"Angry I was expecting,” Goldberg tell his readers. "What came next, I wasn’t.

"Rather’s voice started quivering, and he told me how in his young days, he had signed up with the Marines – not once, but twice!”

This is not the first time Rather has hid behind the flag and his own military service claims to deflect criticism of his reporting, Burkett said. Burkett added that Rather is greatly exaggerating his record. First, Burkett says, Rather "misspoke” when he claimed he signed up for the Marines twice. He didn’t.

And Burkett is flabbergasted that Rather continues to proudly describe himself as a "Marine.”

"What he did, he signed up for the military twice, not the Marines,” Burkett said after thoroughly reviewing Rather’s military records.

But Burkett notes that Rather "never got through Marine recruit training because he couldn’t do the physical activity.”

This story originally broke two years ago. It got a tiny bit of notice, and then we collectively filed it away as example # 2349956 of media hypocrisy.. Now it's back.. and There's more to it.. Loads more...

151 Obscure  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 5:30:50pm

CBS is apparently admitting that the two experts ABC interviewed did consult CBS on the memos. They both warned CBS off from using the documents but went unheeded. CBS is also saying that they used other experts to verify the documents but so far hasn't released their names either. Just who verified the memos?

If they are really that confident in their fact checking, they should release a lot more information about their research than they have so far. So far every expert that CBS has produced has stated on record that they did not in fact authenticate the documents. If they didn't then WHO DID???

Also along that line, the Killian's secretary has come forth and said she didn't type those memos and she thinks their fake. She acknowledges that some of the content of the memo is true but the memo itself is bogus.

The last leg CBS has to stand on is that the memos are true because some people remember Killian saying something like that. Which is such a load of crap. Even if the content were 100% true, the memo could still be a forgery.

I'll give you an example. If I were to create a memo of Lee Harvey Oswald to himself saying he was going to kill Kennedy on November 22, 1963, even though it's true that Oswald did kill Kennedy that very day, my document is still a forgery. No one would argue that because it happens to have a couple of historical facts in it that this document couldn't be forged. Yet this is the very argument that CBS is making.

152 Brian O'Connell  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 5:31:22pm

Stossel was a bit disappointing IMO. No one but Scarborough was willing to say that CBS has responded horribly to the charges.

This was bound to happen. But we did not expect it to happen this fast. There is an old saying "Truth Shall Prevail." Somebody should tell CBS to learn from this old adage. But we should never let down our guard. There is more to come. Just watch as the Democrats and their henchmen the islamofascists pull more rabbits (rather rats) from their hats to spike the winning Republican steamroller. But Kerry himself seems to be losing steam. His body language and tone is that of a tired man facing the prospect of defeat.

158 Michael Levy  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 7:00:00pm

Sockeye agrees with me. But I still don't think it's a bad idea!

Sockeye seems to think that if we get hi-res scans, and the font doesn't match perfectly, then this wasn't made on MS Word. Bzzzzt. Wrong. There are two possiblities for the distortion: 1) from the extensive photocopying (which was done specifically to distort the documents to make them look older) and 2) from the low resolution of the scan. The distortion will cause some small pieces, like the tiny tip at the edge of the seven, to be lost. The fact that there is a circumcised seven in the documents does not prove that they are not Times New Roman. This should be obvious. Even if the high-resolution scans are released, little details may still be missing (if they were killed by the photocopying).

But that's irrelevant to my point. The proof would not be in analyzing individual letters but in the spacing between letters (which has remained intact, even in the low-res scan).

Releasing the scans won't actually clear much up. The point would be to force concessions. There is no way a document examiner could prove from a copy that the documents were genuine. It would only help to prove that they're obvious fakes. If CBS did release, at the end of the day the experts would be exactly where they started: with overwhelming proof CBS is lying. It's only if CBS refuses to disclose that the critics get a boost.

The most important thing is to win The Race To FridayTM. CBS wants to wait until then to dump the news that it's been passing off forgeries and blame it on low-ranking employees because that's when the weekend starts and people stop paying attention to news. By monday, they can claim it's "old news" and that it's time to "move on."

Critics have to keep the pressure up so the time between now and friday is as painful as possible for CBS. We have to cut off CBS's escape route. We shouldn't let them retreat, we want to force a surrender.

This is the kind of "talking point" that could fan the flames. We can't be content that CBS is feeling the heat right now, we have to build them a giant funeral pyre.

159 Peter Verkooijen  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 7:01:39pm

#133 sockeye, let it go. Killian didn't keep any private files. There are no 'originals'. Even though you acknowledge 'the docs appear to be forged' you clearly have trouble adjusting your mental picture to the facts. You're in denial. And it's not Rove's fault.

160 sockeye  Tue, Sep 14, 2004 7:11:49pm

#159 Peter Verkooijen

I do think they were forged.

My point was, if CBS has an exceptionally reliable source, that might trump concerns about the forging.

Like if they came from someone of impeccable character who has a huge trove of personal Bill Burkett memos relating to lots of different subjects, that are all typed in that style, that might lend credence to CBS's case.

If they came from someone with no reasonable connection, or no good explanation of their provenance, then the jig is up.

What I was saying is that CBS needs to release originals or name their source, and explain why their source is so legit that the memos can be assumed to be legit.

So far they have done neither.

The forgeries are extremely clumsy as we have all seen.

My last question is: cui bono?

Oh, the power of ther Net! Here's the email I sent Bill O'?Reilly Saturday:

Dear Mr. O’Reilly,

PLEASE investigate this. I am deeply concerned about the credibility of CBS news. There are too many questions about the authenticity of those memos for Dan Rather to just tell America, “They’re real because I say so.”

Foxnews is about the only network I actually trust. Please don’t let me—and the rest of America—down.

Sincerely,

goddessoftheclassroom [I did sign my real name!]

And he didn't.

You Da Bomb Charles! Saw O'Reilly last night and figured your website got swamped with visitors.

Watching CBS last night..they are grimly hanging on to the claim that the doc's are legit. They than bought up Laura Bush's statements that she thought they were forged and CBS then stated "she has no proof!" Argh!

I was so disgusted I told the SO to shut the damn TV off or turn on "The Simpsons" on Fox Channel 5.

OT:

John Kerry (refraining from editorial comments here) has an article in the 9/15/04 WSJ--that's today--about how a new CEO would be good for America. I don't particularly care about whatever he says, but there's always the excellent respond-to-article button one may click and potentially let him know how one feels.

requires registration I think.

Kudos Charles!

I couldn't get through last night to congratulate you. Enjoy every minute of your well-deserved recognition. Thanks for bringing us along.

Unfortunately, O'Reilly has been snarky over memogate and bloviated when he said "little green footballs" last night.

He also didn't best John O'Neill last week either.

And since I'm ranting a bit, I about puke when he says "there is no difference between Bush & Kerry." Helloooooo? Maybe O'Reilly should tell America what exactly Kerry's position is on all concerns, since he's looking out for us.

/rant off

I don't watch O'Reilly very often...but glad I caught part of it last night. This is a wonderful site!
